Senate Democrats Ready to Seat Burris

Just across the wires. Looks like Burris will have something else to chisel onto his monument.

Senate Democrats plan to accept Roland Burris for President-elect Barack Obama's vacant seat.

After being rejected Tuesday when he tried to join the class of incoming senators, Burris is expected to meet with the Senate's top two Democrats -- Majority Leader Harry Reid and assistant leader Dick Durbin -- on Wednesday in the hopes of securing their support.

The likelihood that Burris, a Democrat, will become the Senate's only black member after Obama's resignation from the seat, increased Tuesday when a key chairwoman got behind him, cracking what had been united public front by Senate Democrats against an appointee of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Senate officials in both parties, speaking on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly for Senate members, have said there is a growing expectation in the Capitol that the saga will end with Burris being seated.

Put the popcorn away, folks. This one's over for now.

Update - Harry Reid's spokesman is denying the reports. Not surprising, considering how weak and stupid he'll look (again) if Senate Democrats seat Burris over Reid's objections.

4 I'm happy that the douchebags are finally doing the right thing by seating Burris. I guess with Feinstein cracking the whip, asshats like Reid, saw the error of their ways. Once again, I gotta say that Blago was much craftier than I originally gave him credit.

Of course he's going to be seated. For one thing, Burris was legally and rightfully (according to Illinois state rules) appointed to the seat by a sitting governor.

But the other thing is that the whole thing was staged: it was a dog & pony show put on by Reid and the rest of the Democrats to make believe they appalled and sickened by Blagojevich.

Expect a lot of these theatrics in the days to come. The Dems will stamp their feet about Obama's nominees, but they will all pass. And the Dems will make like the Republicans are forcing some serious compromises on legislation, but the truth will be that the Dems gave up nothing on their pieces-of-shit legislation.

I don’t expect to see a lot more theatrics from the Dems. They want this thing behind them and I am sure the press will be glad to oblige. Just think how long this would play out if this was a Republican mess.

Can any of you morons tell me why the Democrats need to put on a dramatic production? Yeah, I didn't think so.

The answer is because the Democrats want this charade to appear as a "centrist/moderate/reach-across-the-aisle" government. To avoid losing the House and/or Senate in 2010, they'll pretend to work with, i.e., work over the Republicans and report to the American people that a bipartisan deal was reached.

The Republicans should have gone to the back door of the Senate chamber and held it open for Burris.

Why not? The GOP is the party of Lincoln, anyway, and we all know Obama's seat is going to a Democrat.

We (the RNC) should put ALL of its resources into defeating Harry Reid.

We're not going to win back the House or the Senate, in the near term.* So we need to target a few high-profile Dems and knock them out.

*I do think it's quite possible to win back the House in 2010 IF the House Republicans can vote like strict Conservatives, offer alternatives to the Democrats' plans, and absolutely not compromise with the Democrats.

21 Burris went to the Hill and said he'd sue.  Feinstein said to seat him not because of any great statesmanlike respect for the rule of law but because she saw the inevitable.

As soon as Blagojevich signed the appointment, Reid's only options were to impeach Burris or let him serve his term.  Burris can promise not to run in 2010, but he's not legally bound by that.

I note most are of the opinion that this crooked, arrested , soon to be convicted governor has the right to make this Burris appointment and that should be the end of the story.

I have a feeling though that this opinion only hinges on the fact of the pick itself. Burris is an uncontroversial selection as far as Illinois goes.  I'd venture to say that if Blago had picked a Jesse Jackson Jr. or some other crony, opinions on this governor's power would be more complex.

And poster Darling, Blago won't skate. I expect that he will finish out his term (I doubt our crooked State Legislature will really try to impeach him), not run for reelection (He's less popular in Illinois than Drew Peterson, and that's saying something), and be tried and convicted after he is out of office, ala George Ryan.

74 Gotta say I'm amazed that a substantial fraction of Ace's morons seem to have taken all this theater seriously.

Reid--despite occasionally making statements that *seem* to be...ah, estranged from reality--is not crazy.  Rather, he knows he can make flatly false statements that portray him (and by extension, all Dems) in a good light, because the MSM has his back.  Similarly, he knows Dems need black votes to keep winning elections.  So he wasn't about to *seriously* oppose a black nominee to fill the vacant Senate seat.  But he also knew that roughly one Dem voter out of 20 has vague recollections that corruption is somehow bad.  And the MSM has said Blago was caught on tape sounding pretty venal.

So to appease the second group, Reid walked a fine line, seeming to oppose Burris out of high principle, though he had to have known that Burris would ultimately be admitted.  Darling nailed this one.

Now for Blago:  It should be obvious that he has dirt on every Dem in or from Chicago.  Consequently, no one in any power position on the Dem side wanted to see him tell everything he knew.  So obviously those in power were never gonna let Blago take the stand in court--something Blago was pretty sure of all along.

Blago's appointment of Burris was simply an amusing sideshow.  By appointing a black, Blago put the Dems in the bind everyone has already noticed.  Blago and his friends got a laugh, but Obie and the Dems already had the message.
