Perfidious Headline of the Day: "Israel Deaf to Truce Calls as Gaza Battles Rage On"

During the first week of the war, Dave in Texas called my attention to news outfits using headlines to editorialize about Israelis. Reuters did it again tonight with this story entitled "Israel deaf to truce calls as Gaza battles rage on" by reporter Nidal al-Mughrabi.

That makes it sounds like Hamas is ready to quit, if only those blood-thirsty Israelis would accept their calls for a truce. Of course, in the fifth paragraph the truth comes out:

Hamas vowed to fight on in "every street, every alley" and threatened to fire more missiles across the border into Israel.

So the headline could have just as accurately (though just as incompletely) read: "Hamas deaf to truce calls as Gaza battles rage on." But that would have run counter to Reuters' and this particular reporter's goals. Incidentally, Nidal al-Mughrabi's biased reporting was well-documented at least as far back as November 2006. Same old story at Reuters.

Later: By the way, this came to my attention because the headline was the top link on Google News, thus adding to my long-simmering suspicions about Google's own editorial activities.

4 Unfortunately, FOX, of all news shops, has been one of the worst offenders.

Jan. 2 website headline: "Day of Wrath Ordered as Israel Hits Hamas Homes"

Dec. 27 website headline: "Bloodiest Day for Palestinians in 20 Years"

Posted by: RB at January 05, 2009 09:34 PM (6bLaL)

5 I think a better title would be "International Community Whines Uselessly, Israel Continues to Give Palestinians Deserved Whipping."

6 Gabriel,

It is reasonable for any people to resist an armed incursion into their territory. So that part of his quote has no bearing.

But what does bear is that Hamas has continued its rocket attacks upon Israel. Each and every one of which is a war crime.

Hardly. Can't you do math? Even if EVERY fatality so far was a Hamas fighter it would imply that they have lost a mere TWO PERCENT of their fighters. The Israelis have lots of slogging left......most of it house to house to room to room.

Glad I ain't an Israeli grunt.

9 The IDF is persuading individual members of Hamas to see the error of their ways and end their attacks on Israel.

Of course, by "persuading" I mean killing them.

That headline is no surprise. In fact, what took them so long?

10 That makes it sounds like Hamas is ready to quit, if only those blood-thirsty Israelis would accept their calls for a truce.

I'm sure they are willing to quit, that's how the palestinian - and the Arab in general - fights. Attack until attacked back, then cry cease fire until you can reorganize and attack again.

Glad I ain't Tom_W and so ignorant of warfare and history. He's the kind of guy that cried that we'd lose tens of thousands against the vaunted Republican Guard in Iraq, that bodybags would line the airports as they valiantly fought to the end.

Hardly. Can't you do math? Even if EVERY fatality so far was a Hamas fighter it would imply that they have lost a mere TWO PERCENT of their fighters. The Israelis have lots of slogging left......most of it house to house to room to room.

And that's the damnable misery.  A complete, parking-lot carpet bombing of that useless, hate-consumed shithole would be a better gift to the human condition than every sit-in and strongly-worded U.N. letter in all of human history combined.

The five innocents that were caught in the carnage would be regrettable, but lefties are always telling me about the necessary sacrifices involved in making omelettes.  They only change their tune when the eggs are carrying the guns in the name of "righteous" genocide.

The life of a single IDF soldier is worth more than the sum total of the subhuman garbage they're looking to put down.  What seems to be curiously omitted from most of these reports is the fact that the "Palestinians" (i.e. arbitrarily and cynically defined Arab trash of a slew of legitimate ethnic identities, not one of which is the make-believe construct of "Palestinian") overwhelmingly elected these psychopathic death merchants to represent them.

So eat it, assholes.  I'm going to continue to watch BBCA with the exact opposite emotional reaction as your unbelievably head-over-heels, in-the-tank-for-evil reports want me to have.  I thought you guys went all-in when Russia invaded Georgia, but, boy, did I ever underestimate your undying loyalty to evil aggression.

20 "perfidious" means whatever Obama says it means.

It is derived from the Latin root word "perfus"'

Scholars are divided into two camps about the meaning of perfus. One camp insists it means "untrustworthy, faithless, dishonest, backstabbing"

The other camp insists it means "nuanced"

The children are blameless. The "civilians" (by which I mean every single adult) are not. They are no more blameless than the good Germans who said they really had no idea what caused that funny smell ...

Every adult "Palestinian" knows that the stated goal of Hamas is the death of every single Jew in the world. Every adult "Palestinian" supports Hamas, the same way those Germans supported the Third Reich. I see no modern-day White Rose group in Gaza's universities. I see nothing but a people so bloodthirsty it makes me sick.

You are correct in that they are not subhuman.  They are, however, completely, absolutely evil. They have brought this upon themselves.

You are an ignorant cockholster for trying to score semantic points by defending would-be mass murderers. Fuck off and die.

29 While we're at it, the concept of civilian is really a silly European thing anyway and we should dispense with it.  If those tribals think they have a right to send their rockets and bombers our way, we should respond in like but greater fashion until they decide it's not a right worth pursuing.  And frankly, the more of them that die before they figure it out, the longer it will be before they pull that shit again.

I thought that the "Arab fluffer" comment was perfect. I think we should all stop for a moment and appreciate that VJay has expanded the vernacular. Well done.

Oh, and the burkha comment wasn't bad either.

And Tom, I am pretty good with my fists, which I learned in Berkeley, kicking the shit out of apologists for murderers, not unlike you. That is not a threat, because I am no longer an idealistic undergrad. But perhaps you will meet someone like I used to be. That would be fun. I'd like to watch, and maybe give him some pointers on how to take on gutless worms like you and your ilk. You are a current example of what Golda Meir was referring to when she said that there will be peace "when the Arabs love their children more than they hate the Jews."

38 By the way, the ever wise moustache had a write up in the Washington Post today about actually solving the problem.  Israel should cede Gaza and the West Bank back to Egypt and Jordan, respectively.

47 Chapter 3
How to be Super Progressive Internet Warrior™

By now you should be able to locate wingnut blogs with ease. So the next step is to practice responding to the wingnut readers who comment on such blogs, and by responding I mean replying with the willful stupidity we  reviewed in Chapter 1.
[...]

Mistatement and Hyperbole
It shouldn't be necessary to remind the Super Progressive Internet Warrior™ (SPIM) that quoting from a comment means that one necessarily quotes it accurately. It is often best to truncate quotes wherever advantageous to your Progressive stupidity. For those of you who still have trouble with reading, you're in luck! It doesn't actually matter. The more you skip, the more effective Warrior you become.

Furthermore, to make this technique effective, restate the commenter's original text in the most ludicrous, over-extended manner in order to make the commenter appear evil and unscrupulous. This is known as Hyperbole.  Note: Again, please see the Appendix for all of the big words I have used so far, like 'hyperbole' or 'perfidious.'

No. Wire service reporters are expected to write their own headlines. The copy editors can suggest changes/improvements etc but the onus is on the reporter and the headline on any particular wire article 9 times out of ten is what the reporter put on it.

Then again it would hardly matter who put the headline on. I highly doubt that any Hamas-corralled Muslim Arab stringer in Hamastan could possibly be more biased against Israel than the pasty British toffs who run Reuters.

Israel isn't "Deaf to Truce Calls"--it is deaf to calls for another half-truce.

A half-truce, in which only the Israelis are expected to disarm, is exactly what started this. That, and Iran. Who will tell Herr Doktor Paul?
