Hamas: We Will Kidnap Israeli Soldiers If a Ground War Begins

It would be a capture of enemy combatants rather than a kidnapping if Hamas observed the Geneva Conventions, but of course they don't. Only US and Israel are bound by those.

Exiled Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal said from Damascus Friday that his militant group was prepared for an Israeli ground invasion of the Gaza Strip and could abduct abduct more soldiers if Israel attempts the incursion.
"If you commit a foolish act by raiding Gaza, who knows, we may have a second or a third or a fourth Shalit," he said, according to Reuters. Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit was kidnapped by Hamas in a cross-border raid more than two years ago.

I have this from a close friend in the IDF reserves who is staging on the border now. They've been told to take themselves out if necessary, to spare Israel the hostage crap that would otherwise ensue.

From what I've read, that's just how they are culturally are. They'll make outrageous threats and get in your face over a minor dispute, with both sides knowing that they don't really mean it. Kinda like someone saying "my boss will kill me if he finds out I called in sick to go to the game", except taken to extremes.

I don't remember where I read it, but they'd say and do things that in the West would probably earn you a broken nose, but would wouldn't understand why they got hit because to them it's just normal bluster.

The Israel Defense Forces attacked more than 25 targets across the Gaza Strip on Friday night. One of the targets bombed by the Israel Air Force was a college used as a meeting place and hideout for Hamas members, where many rockets were fired towards Israel.

Other targets attacked included hours of activists used as weapon storehouses and a control tower at the Dahaniya Airport.

Abu Zakaria Al-Jamal's house was bombed in one of the airstrikes. According to the IDF, his job was to direct the firing of rockets and was in charge of rocket launching cells.

The house of Ismail Ghanem, a member of Hamas' military wing, was bombed in the town of Beit Lahiya. According to the IDF, Ghanem is one of the main people responsible for the firing of Grad rockets at Israel.

The IAF also bombed the house of Izz al-Din Haddad, head of Hamas' military wing in the eastern part of Gaza city, and the car of a Hamas activist who according to the IDF was unloading weapons from his car to a Gaza storehouse. Navy forces attacked Hamas posts, training camps and rocket launching pads.

Sources in the Strip reported that the IDF dropped leaflets in the early morning hours, calling on Gaza's residents not to take to the streets.
