Elegant England: Drunken Yobs Call For Help Every Seven Seconds on New Year's

Content warning on the pics in the article, which show yobs with bloodied foreheads and slack after an alcohol-induced purge.

The first picture is especially bloody, so have a caution.

Violence scarred celebrations and led to a bloody New Year across the country as emergency services endured a chaotic end to 2008.

Ambulance control centres reported receiving 999 calls as often as once every seven seconds - the second highest volume of calls since the Millennium - as binge drinkers turned nasty in the freezing temperatures.

Many of the calls related either to alcohol-fuelled assaults or excessive drunkenness.

Booze contributed to time-wasting calls to 999 operators too, with one man calling to ask if New York was in America, and what time it was there.
Elsewhere, while large numbers were ferried to hospitals, in some areas injuries were treated by paramedics in 'booze buses' to leave ambulances free for more serious emergencies.

In Essex, so many drunk people were arrested that all 200 of the constabulary's cells were filled, and overflow revellers had to be shipped to neighbouring Kent to be held for the night.

If I can make a quick point: Europe forever flatters itself by contrasting itself -- erudite, educated, prosperous, well-mannered, bourgeois -- with America -- drunken, stupid, fat, loud, obnoxious, and ill-informed.

They do this by the same trick every time: They compare their stable, well-behaved middle classes and working with our less well-behaved, less refined lower classes.

Of course this is stupid. It is comparing apples to oranges, or, more accurately, one population's most well-behaved cohort with another population's least well-behaved one.

Compare most of the American lower class-- which, despite not having much money, tends to be industrious and fairly law-abiding -- with the European lower class and the comparison changes quite a bit. The American lower class is far more ambitious and self-improving than the "No Future" drunken yobs of Europe.

If Europe sees more of our lower classes than they do of ours.... well, that's because our lower class is industrious enough, ambitious enough, culturally curious enough, and diligent enough to set aside money... to travel to England and the Continent.

Unlike the lower classes in Europe, whose idea of travel is hopping the ferry to start a drunken, blood-and-vomit-spraying riot in another nation's soccer stadium.

The difference, apparently, is that the American lower classes believe they can prosper if they work and save -- and they do so prosper -- unlike the lower classes of Europe, which know they have, as the Sex Pistols sang, No Future. So why not spend virtually every night getting slosh-drunk at the pub?

38 I am reliably informed by friends in England that those tanked-up yobbitches put out like mad, if you can handle it.
Why the loser/yob culture in the UK?  Same reason we have the gangsta culture here--it's subsidized by welfare.  The dole is much easier to come by in the UK, hence, more of these life-long losers.
Did you know the UK has a government protected and subsidized criminal class?  Oh, yes.  They're called the "Travellers" these days--used to be the Gypsies before that was dumped as non-PC for some incomprehensible reason.  These people essentially live off crime.  They move around in trailers and the government provides open fields for them to stay in--often seizing them by eminent domain from local farmers--where they set up camp until the site has been turned into a toxic waste dump and the locals robbed of every item of value, then they move on.  These camps are no-go zones for the cops, since if they show up every person there turns out to surround the cars and block any attempt at investigation, arrest, whatever.  Most of them have no ascertainable identity and are often known to the police only as "fingerprint set #34RW56A" and the like.  They don't pay fines, they don't show up for court, and nobody really does anything about it because they are considered some sort of protected class...like Native Americans with roving reservations.
As Mark Steyn said, the UK is turning into a sort of gigantic theme park for The Onion.

Sorry, the British seem to be bifurcated  like the US.  I don't know what their equivalent to Red/Blue State is, but they've got it.  If you doubt what their youth who are in the military can do, just read one of Michael Yon's dispatches.

53 The main difference is that our lower classes generally live better than their middle classes.

In many if not most cases, our lower classes have larger living spaces (houses/apts), more luxury items, and vehicles.... European lower classes don't.  A lot of their middle classes don't.

The cost of gasoline in most of Europe is four or five times what it is in the US.  The tax burden in most of Europe is just short of crippling.  I don't envy them at all.

Fair enough about their military. Makes me feel a little better, though I still don't see how a decayed culture can sustain a formidable fighting force long-term. And if you're right about us following Europe into this sort of decline, then we've big problems.

55 Pretty much everyone here is missing the obvious.

The women are all under dressed and drunk off their minds. The guys "glassed" in fights.

Gee oh gee, what could be the problem?

How about, fairly obvious competition over women unmediated by any institution, tradition, etc. and exacerbated by booze, large amounts of which coupled with no real social controls = violence. Or blasted out women passed out in the street. Sigh.

Dalrymple is great, but he missed the obvious, the violence is all directed in a brutal competition over women.

I'm shocked that Britain has not yet voted "share the sex" along with "share the wealth."
