Seattle Mayor: Hey, You Know What? Maybe Next Time It Snows We'll Use Salt

Apparently Puget Sound isn't that sensitive to salt after all. Or at least it's not as sensitive as thousands of downtown retailers whose stores were made inaccessible by this absurd policy, nor as sensitive to hundreds of people who crashed their cars driving on the packed snow the roads were deliberately turned into.

Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels announced this morning that the city will reverse its decade-old policy and use road salt to melt ice in future storms.

The mayor set certain conditions for using salt: on hills, arterials or snow bus routes, and on routes to hospitals and other emergency facilities when at least 4 inches of snow is predicted, if ice is predicted, or if extreme cold is expected to last more than three days.

The city earlier refused to use salt, saying it's bad for the environment, and instead spread sand over the roads.

"In normal Seattle winters, this practice has served us well," Nickels said in a City Hall news conference today. "This time, liquid de-icers were not enough. People were frustrated, and so was I."

Nickels has faced criticism over the city's reaction to back-to-back snowstorms over the past two weeks. Buses could not run in many parts of the city and roads remained icy and rutted days after snow had fallen.

Thanks to jenjhis.

1 Yeah well that stunt probably cost him his job. The people of Seattle are screaming moonbats and as lefty as they come, but when reality kicks you in the teeth, people tend to set their idiotic fantasies aside, at least temporarily.

4 This is gonna cost the city big-time!  I know of a case where the parents of a baby sued Campbells soup and Grocer's Supply because the baby choked to death on beef and noodle soup!

5 Come to think of it, the city probably has immunity as many other municipalities do.  But their Claims department is going to be very busy.

6 This is why leftards should never run anything.

They get so caught up in all their silly little side concerns that they forget about the basic functions of government like public safety and drivable streets.

As a side note, this's why the left has sucked so much for the last eight years and why BO will suck. National defense, public safety, stopping terrorists, etc are all unimportant side concerns compared to ghey marriage and AGW.

7 Man would I love to be Donk in charge of shit. If I were Mayor, I'd be ripped out of my mind, on the roof of city hall. It'd be catered and free booze. Invite people to watch the poor bastards, who put you in office, in the middle of this carnage. Laughing at nuns falling down, people wrecking new cars, and ambulances spinning their tires....."Hey, find out if the asshole in the ambulance is a donk...and if they makes it....hah, hah, hah"...

That's better.

Nickels has set up a hotline and advertising on the local NPR station for people to call in to report damage from snow and the subsequent flooding that isn't covered by insurance.  No, of course they aren't going to pay any claims... they just want to collect as much damage evidence as possible to pass on to the State and Feds to justify emergency funding.  Who says we didn't anything from Katrina Ray Nagin?!

12 Idiot Nickels initially graded the city with a B on how it was handled. I like it here for all it has to offer (moonbats aside), but I'm not sticking around to find out what an F would look like to him. I'd like to live.

And I can't help but wonder what the environmental impact of de-icer fluid was, versus say, a naturally occurring compound like NaCl?

19 Maybe some Leftoids will lie down in front of the salt trucks.

Or perhaps a protest march by Puget Sound crustaceans will bring the city to a halt.

20 Remember, Nickels is behind such wonderful ideas as banning bonfires at the beach (global warming!) and 20c per bag tax for both paper and plastic bags at the grocery store. Should I remind you also of the draconian recycling laws, where they go through your trash to make sure you're recycling properly and refuse to pick it up if have too much recyclables?

Even my uber-reliably Democrat parents, who live in the city, have called this guy a "stupid fuck". Dad's words, not mine.

Posted by: Jeff Weimer at January 01, 2009 04:25 PM (1Mn8Z)

21 OBTW, Puget Sound is saltwater. So some rock salt that ran into the Elliot Bay would probably not hurt it at all. Nickels is a Moron.

OTOH, it usually doesn't snow but once a year, if that, and the snow only usually lasts for a couple days, so using or not using salt is only a temporary problem (this situation is unusual and should warrant salt use). And those of you in the upper midwest already know, road salt is a bitch on your car.

22 The Mayor simply forgot the first rule of posing: that the costs must be imposed on someone else. And the voters know it.

23 They get so caught up in all their silly little side concerns that they forget about the basic functions of government like public safety and drivable streets.

Here's how I've got it figured out:

It's not so much that lefttards forget about concerns like public safety; it's more that they consider human beings the enemy and last on the list to deserve concern.

Our very existence ruins the earth, and all our needs are secondary to the need to keep the earth pristine, including the need to remain alive.  Human needs are selfish needs and are bad.  All other creatures are innocent and their needs are unselfish and good.

The reason lefttards believe that human beings are the enemy is lefttards don't believe in God.  (I'm not sure why I think it works that way, but I think it does.)

Believing human beings are the enemy is the reason they are self-loathing; and because they are self-loathing, they believe human beings are the enemy.  It's a perfect circle.

24 Salting the streets would result in flooding salt into the sound which would dilute rapidly in the ocean. Environmental impact: minimal.

Sanding the streets results in flooding the sound with sand, which imbedded with grease and chemicals from the cars and streets pours onto the bottom of the sound causing buildup and toxic chemicals in the water.

So which does this genius choose? You guessed it. This wasn't environmental, it was cost-based. They had sand, they didn't have much salt. Salt is cheap, but sand is basically free.

But Sherlock is right: these lefty fools keep choosing people who'll make this choice then get mad when they do it. It's like watching some retarded kid hit himself in the face over and over with a mallet, then get angry at the mallet anew each time. The action and the result just never seems to connect.

#24--Christopher, apparently you've never see what sand does to a municipal drainage system. Even in my 2x4 town, sand use results in a mess each and every year--it CLOGS drains. By using a sand/salt mixture--really LIGHT on the sand it alleviates the problem to an extent.

Not to mention, nobody was dumb enough to try using rubber bladed plows. Older, in this case, is better.

26

As was mentioned by a couple of people above, snow is rare in Seattle (maybe once or twice a year), generally minimal (trace to 2") and rain usually washes it away shortly after. This was a once in a decade event. The back-to-back storms dumped about 14" total. The last time we had something like this was in '96, where we got 15." (a record, I think) And even then, most of it melted off within a couple of days. What made these storms unusual was that we also had an extended period with temps below freezing, so no meltiness. (below freezing is also kinda' rare in Seattle). So for everyone worried about their cars instantly turning into a pile of rust, salt might get used about once a decade at most.

As for the precious salmon Mayor McCheese originally cited, they're born in freshwater streams, head out to the ocean (saltwater) to frolic around for a while, then return to freshwater to spawn and die. And since all streams and rivers around Puget Sound eventually drain to the sea, any salt would've been flushed out fairly quickly with all the rain around here. Never mind that salmon can be a little bland and dry anyway and could always use a little more seasoning. Hopefully the revised street salting policy will also include some other spices, along with perhaps some lemon juice and maybe a little Liquid Smoke.

Finally, all the surrounding suburbs used salt along with the Wash. State DOT, the latter of which is responsible for clearing state and interstate highways, many of which run right through Seattle. So salt was running off into the pristine Seattle streams regardless. For that matter, I don't think there's more than one or two streams which salmon or anything else live and/or spawn in anyway.

30 You know whats really bad for the environment? When out of control cars smash into each other and other object, causing their nasty internal fluids to get dumped onto the ground. If only there were some way to make the roads safer during severe weather.

31 Christopher, apparently you've never see what sand does to a municipal drainage system. Even in my 2x4 town, sand use results in a mess each and every year--it CLOGS drains.

Yeah that's the other problem, but he went with sand anyway. We use gravel here by the way, dings up the paint but it works pretty well for the little ice we see.

Nickels looks a little fatty (and kinda' gristly) to me. But I did have a brief stare-down with the cats regarding who would eat who. Eventually they backed down, since I control the catnip around here. Fuckers don't even realize they're going into the Weber smoker next weekend.

Found two for this

Maybe its just something about the Washington State sunshine? Spokane Washington man prohibited from clearing neighborhood snow Thoughtful neighboring beaucrat (road supervisor) narked him to cops.

BYU researchers find that planting nutritious high-yield grass Panicum turgidum, with the succulent Suadea fruticosa in arid salty soil, irrigated by salty - brackish Indian Ocean water. Experiment conducted in Pakistan. Resulting plant is so fast growing, it requires a monthly harvest, and has the animal nutrition equivalent of corn. Maybe we need more salt. When fed to cattle, the resulting Beef is declared tasty even by the neighboring Hindus.
