NHL Winter Classic...Finally Something Good From Chicago

In its continuing desperate attempt for attention, the NHL has actually hit on something cool...an annual New Year's Day game outside. Last year it was in the snow and ice in Buffalo. This year they've put a rink in Wrigley Field for a game between two Original Six teams...The Chicago Blackhawks and The Detroit Red Wings on NBC.

Below, how you turn a baseball stadium into a hockey rink.

It's too bad they couldn't make the original plan work, a game at the old Yankee Stadium featuring the Rangers v. well any number of teams...the Devils, Islanders, Flyers or any of the other Original Six. That would have been very cool.

1 Good stuff. Ugly but effective goal by the Hawks, and colossal hit by Seabrook on Cleary to put him tits-up in the Hawks bench.

A loss for the Red Wings is good for this great nation of ours.

4 Ugly but effective goal

Ugly? Dude, this is a Norris Division match up (I don't care what they call these days, it's the NORRIS)...and there ain't no pretty in the Norris.

I'm not loving the throwback unis. I think the Blackhawks and Red Wings have two of the coolest logos as is

Posted by: DrewM. at January 01, 2009 01:46 PM (hlYel)

5 And I absolutely cannot fucking stand Holmstrom... like a poor man's Claude Lemieux. What a little bitch.

7 No argument, there, Drew... a goal's a goal.

I really dig the the throwback coloring, but like you, I'd have tried to stick with the current logos. The Hawks have a really nice tri-color stripe that was awesome.

9 a poor man's Claude Lemieux

Did you see he's making a comeback? He was signed by the Sharks and is playing in the AHL.

And Cheliosis 47 (or will be in 3 weeks)? 47! Holy fuck.

Posted by: DrewM. at January 01, 2009 01:50 PM (hlYel)

10 I saw a think on Chelios...he said he stopped lifting weights about 5 years ago and does nothing but core training now.

Posted by: LtE113 (MIke in Chicago) at January 01, 2009 01:53 PM (/L1AV)

11 I was in Colorado when Lemieux was playing for the NordiqueAlanche... and then after that, I was working for the Sharks' ECHL affiliate in New Orleans. I'm curious to see how that will work...

And Chelios in anything other than his #7 on the Blackhawks is, to me, criminal... and yes, it's been forever. I just think back to the great days of Roenick (whom I cannot stand as a human being), Amonte, Bernie Nicholls, Ed Belfour, and Gary Suter.

Golden days, those.

19 I remember too, 1961.  Hall and Sawchuck.  Howe and Delvecchio, Makita, Hull.

This was one of six times the Wings went to the cup finals before they started winning cups again in the 90's.  Long time, so we know.

Good to have the rivalry back, go Wings.

26 Rangers/B's in Fenway

Oh yeah.

That's the cool part of having the Rangers involved...so many choices. Aside from the local rivals and Original Six choices, you can throw in Pitt with Crosby or even Washington and Ovechkin.

I can't believe they couldn't get it together and do at Yankee Stadium.

Posted by: DrewM. at January 01, 2009 02:23 PM (hlYel)

29 The Rogers Centre in Toronto, while not historic would be fun.

Of course anywhere in Montreal would be great.

Have I ever mentioned I went to a game at the old Montreal Forum and saw Mario Lemiux get robbed by a great glove save when he was on a clean breakaway from his own blue line? Well I did and it was great.

34 Was Roy in net for Montreal, Drew?

That's the only downside. I'm pretty sure it was Brian Hayward.

It almost unfolded in slow motion...the roar built as everyone realized it was Lemieux . He stick-handled, Hayward went down in the butterfly, Lemieux lifted the shot. Hayward reached up and snagged it with the big Ol้! move with the glove. The place goes nuts!

I was in the SRO section, as high up as you could get but it was incredible.

37

Heh,

The January 24th,1988 NY Times. (Wow, it's was 21 years ago. Damn I'm old.)

MONTREAL (AP) - Charlie Simmer banged in a rebound 29 seconds into overtime, capping a three-goal rally that gave Pittsburgh the victory.

It was the fourth straight triumph by Pittsburgh, all on the road -equaling a team record.

The Penguins also ended an 0-8-2 drought at the Forum.

Mario Lemieux set up the winning goal when he stopped an attempted clearing pass by a Montreal defenseman, Larry Robinson. Brian Hayward, the goaltender, blocked Lemieux's 30-foot shot, but Simmer pounced on the rebound and beat Hayward from the right side of the crease.

Frank Pietrangelo, a rookie goalie, made 43 saves for Pittsburgh, while Hayward had 26 for the Canadiens, including a glove stop on Lemieux's breakaway midway through the final period to preserve the 3-3 tie.

Nedless to say, it was much more exciting than the AP made it sound.

40 Time for the Hawks to make a goalie change...put in Tony Esposito!

Posted by: DrewM. at January 01, 2009 03:09 PM (hlYel)

41 I was at the original game that inspired this event, in November of 2003, in Edmonton, the Oiler alumni against the Habs alumni.  Absolutely bitter cold, but such a fun day.  I lived in Edmonton during the Oilers' heyday, from the time Gretzky arrived as a kid to that black day he was traded.  On that day in November the town got to relive for a moment those glory days!

Posted by: southern girl at January 01, 2009 03:11 PM (nH2Ad)

42 Right, those Euro's can't play.

I like a few euros to spice up a team. The problem has become the whole league has become that style and getting away from good, clean physical play.

As for cunts, I give you...Sidney Crosby. Stop the fucking diving.

Posted by: DrewM. at January 01, 2009 03:11 PM (hlYel)

43 Ahh, great to hear the Don Cherry types whine about the European players.  I kinda feel sorry for you guys.  As soon as a Canadian can skate and chew gum at the same time, he's supposed to be the second coming of Gretzky.  The great Sid Crosby was outplayed by both Datsyuk and Zetterburg in the finals last year.  It's all about skating boys, the Broad Street Bullies are long gone.  Go Wings.  I do kinda miss the days of the "Bruise Brothers" (Probert and Kocur) though.

44 "The problem has become the whole league has become that style and getting away from good, clean physical play."

Agree 100%...But Euro are still bigger pussies. Gretz and Liemieux were pussies too. chelios has always been the biggest crybaby in the NHL...he made us sick and he was on our side.

Posted by: LtE113 (MIke in Chicago) at January 01, 2009 03:19 PM (/L1AV)

45 Actually southern girl, I believe it was the outdoor game between Michigan/Michigan State in 2001 that was the inspiration for these games.  I think they drew over 70,000 for that game.

Posted by: Third Coast at January 01, 2009 03:20 PM (G4Fow)

46 Some fairly good hits in this game, I don't see any wimps out there.  I don't see any elbows to the head (Pronger) or punches to the balls (Crosby) either.  Oh how I long for those good old Canadian goons like Probert.

54 Some fairly good hits in this game, I don't see any wimps out there.

It's not the occasional big hit, it's the constant taking the body, finishing your check every shift.

Look at how guys stand in front of the net now. There used to be a big price for that. Now, not as much.

Look at some old game tapes (MSG runs them during the summer). It's a different game. Hockey is still a great game, just different than it was 15 years ago.

Posted by: DrewM. at January 01, 2009 03:47 PM (hlYel)

55 Yes Drew, hockey has changed.  They give you a penalty now for clearing the crease.  Don't blame the players, blame Shanahan.

Posted by: Robert at January 01, 2009 03:51 PM (VotgB)

56 Posted by: Robert at January 01, 2009 03:51 PM (VotgB)

I don't blame the players. You're right, if the rules are going to be stupid then teams are going to get players to fit it.

That said, I do prefer the no clutching and grabbing rules (though they have gotten insane, if you look at a guy sometimes you can get an interference call). Maybe there's no way to strike the balance but I'd prefer a little more physical play.

Posted by: DrewM. at January 01, 2009 03:54 PM (hlYel)

Call Gretz a pussy if you will, but at least he knew who protected him.  When he won a car every year (Lady Byng, Hart, I don't remember) he always gave it to Dave Semenko.

61 Speaking of old time hockey, some of the best was the Canada-Soviet series back in the cold war days.  I seem to remember that those puck control Russians gave the Canadian All-Stars all they wanted.

Fetisov, Lorianov and Makarov are probably the best line ever to play and I'm including the Detroit production line that finished 1-2-3 in scoring in 51.  It is a cheap shot to call these players wimps.  A very cheap shot.

I agree though that the calls are crazy today, you can get a hooking call for almost anything, and 5 on 3 is in every game.  Nuts, in the days of Gordie Howe you could count the 5 on 3's for a whole season on one hand.

Posted by: Robert at January 01, 2009 04:08 PM (VotgB)

62 Not a great game but good stuff for the game as a whole.

How funny is it that Ty Conklin(!) of all people has played in all 3 of these (including the one in Edmonton)?

You're talking about the Rendez-vous '87 Series, right?

Those were two tremendous games . Holy shit that was great hockey.

I don't remember the Challenge Cup games in the '70's but that '87 series was fucking great.

Also great...the '96 Canada/World Cup series the US won. that was an amazing tournament.

68 Robert:
I remember the 1972 Canada-Russia series.  I lived in Toronto at the time and everywhere you went people were glued to a radio or the TV and it was all anybody talked about.  One thing I remember is that Howie Meeker took the Russian names in stride but tripped over Cournoyer every time!

Posted by: southern girl at January 02, 2009 10:27 AM (nH2Ad)

69 Toronto eh?  You know Hockey.

Detroit was fairly nuts about all the series too, but nothing like Toronto.  Montreal has more cups but Toronto has the craziest fans. Every couple of years I meet a friend there and go to a game but it is the only place I don't wear my Wings stuff.  I see all those banners hanging there and stop at Tim Horton's on the way back.

I can't believe they're not starting another club somewhere around Hamilton, the NHL is nuts.  The renewed interest in the Leafs, Bruins, Rangers and Blackhawks will do more for Hockey than all the other stuff they have done for ten years.
