Christmas Is Now An Official Holiday In...Iraq

Um, wow. In a world where outreach between Muslims and others has been more or less a one way street, this is a pretty big gesture.

In his homily on Thursday, Chaldean Cardinal Emmanuel III Delly praised the establishment of Christmas as an official holiday as a step toward easing tensions.

"I thank the government for giving chances to all to serve each other for the general benefit, and I thank it too for making this day an official holiday where we pray to God to make us trust each other as brothers," he said at the Christmas Mass before several dozen worshippers in the small chapel of a Baghdad monastery.

A senior Shiite cleric, Ammar al-Hakim, attended the Mass flanked by bodyguards in a gesture of cooperation with Christians.

"I thank the visitors here and ask them to share happiness and love with their brothers on Christmas; by this they will build a glorious Iraq," the cardinal said.

"We came here to bring a message of love, respect and gratitude to our Christian brothers and to share happiness with them as we have shared sadness with them during the cruel targeting they came under," al-Hakim said in an interview with al-Furat TV. "We will do our best for equality between people and a good life for all, whatever their religious, sectarian and ethnic background."

He is the son and heir-apparent of Abdul-Aziz al-Hakim, Iraq's biggest mainstream Shiite party.

Yes, there are still problems and challenges (and don't think for a minute the linked article doesn't joyfully list them) but progress is progress. There are only a couple of hundred thousands of Christians left in Iraq so this seems to be a statement about what kind of country the Iraqis want that is aimed at a wider audience than just Iraqi Christians.

It's almost enough to make you think there's some hope that things might change for the people of Iraq. (See what I did there?)

Gateway Pundit
has more on Iraq's Christmas celebrations.

And while the Iraqis who made this decision deserve the credit, let's never forget who made it possible.

There is one person above all who has made this possible, by showing the greatest leadership and steadfastness in war since Winston Churchill... the President of the United States, George W. Bush.

8 I talked to a bunch of Muslim Iraqis (OK, I admit, a lot of the Iraqis who worked for us weren't particularly observant Muslims who came from upper-middle-class Baghdad neighborhoods) who liked Christmas decorations, Santa Claus, and exchanging gifts on the 25th of December. They said it had been that way for years. Why? "Jesus was still a great prophet even if we, like the Jews, don't think he was the son of God. Plus, we're kind of short on gift-getting holidays in Islam and the lights are pretty."

16 OT, but it's really irritating me.

Today at Catholic Mass, the deacon gave the homily, and during it, he referenced "all the political scandals" that have plagued the country this year.  His examples?  Elliot Spitzer and Sarah Palin.

17 This news is incredible.  Doubt it will get much any mainstream press coverage.  Too bad, as it really shows what is possible.  As always, someone will throw a wrench in it.  Cannot have something as powerful as Peace and Joy over there.  I know for a fact, the Iraqi's here in Dearborn are in constant contact with their relatives and friends "back home".  It is simply not possible for the Iraqi nationals to not hear often of the freedom enjoyed by Americans.  They are not stupid and can see past  rhetoric of the assorted Bagdad Bobs (remember him?) and all the other haters from nearby countries who despise The West and all it represents.  So I tip my hat to all the soldiers who served and made this possible.  I say to them, and our president George Bush, and yes, all my fellow morons, God bless you one and all.  Have a Merry Christmas!

My guess would likely be her pregnant unwed daughter.  Now I'd be pissed off a bit too had my priest mentioned similar today, but let's be honest:  Two things the Catholic Church does tend to frown upon is infidelity and pre-marital sex.

"What infidelity? Palin's daughter was not married."

That is infidelity.  It's not adultery.  Infidelity means "unfaithfulness to your station in life;" i.e. single = no sex.  Married = sex only with your spouse.  "Infidelity" is the opposite of "chastity," which, of course, means "faithfulness to your station."  "Adultery" means cheating on your spouse.

The Catholic Church, along with many other traditional denominations, is big on chastity, and down on infidelity.

The deacon's still a douche.

I suspect abortion is a greater sin than pre-marital sex in the eyes of the Church. And infanticide, which Obama supports, one of the biggest sins of all.

How come there was no mention of the scandal of those who call themselves Catholics voting for a candidate that supports infanticide?

You would think that is a reasonable idea.  There are large factions from other nearby countries in the Middle East who would not hesitate to kill anybody (this would include fellow muslims or infidels) with such progressive thinking.

Note: Sarah Palin did not have pre-marital sex -- her daughter did. Attacking a 17 year old is pretty crappy and doesn't make the person doing it look very good. Better to take the cowards way out and attack the mother by name. (Truth: he was attacking Palin by name because he is a moonbat donk -- not because of scandal.)

It also ignores the fact that both the daughter and the mother chose not to have abortions which would be more scandalous and which I also believe is quite common among Catholics.

Yeah, SGT Dan, but in addition to that, Iraqis like to take holidays -- there seems to be one every week, some of them impromptu events declared by some minister.

There's a week or more for Ramadan, another for Ashura, the old Iraqi national holidays like 14th July and the new ones like 7 April.

I'd prefer that they work more to rebuild their country and take less holidays, Christmas or not.   So I'm not about "Yippie, they're taking yet another holiday!"

52 And never mind that political attitudes among "Catholics" according to polls are statistically not differentiable from the general population.  If you are a Catholic and post here, you are probably not the problem.  It's all those who claim your faith because they want to be part of a group.  (I know there are Catholics who are also Christian because I met several campaigning in October).
