Comments thread for if there happen to be any headlines today. My quick glance at the wires and news aggregators:

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services has issued its report on abuses at the FLDS Yearning for Zion Ranch. DFPS says it was required by law to intervene based on the information it had. FLDS responds that the Texas agency is just covering itself and needs to learn how to apologize. The criminal cases are ongoing: nine men in total have been indicted for crimes ranging from sexual abuse of a minor to bigamy and failure to report child abuse.

Martin Feldstein, writing in the Wall Street Journal, suggests that defense spending would be excellent economic stimulus. Defense spending will be more useful in the long run and less susceptible to corruption than Obama's Great Infrastructure Project. On the other hand, Feldstein's suggestion still requires us to believe that the federal government can spend its way out of a recession.

Jim Lindgren compares the Blogojevich complaint and affidavit with Obama's internal report on his staff's contact with the Illinois governor and finds that the only two contacts mentioned in the affidavit do not appear in Obama's report.

From what I have seen of the blending of all the reports on this TX case, it appears to me to be yet another case of the DA, in this case another abusive family court, running amuck. They used a known unreliable witness who was later discredited and they have made a mountain out of nothing charges.

This case well demonstrates that family court blatently violates Constitutional protections in the name of “for the children” and yet we here noting from the liberals who screamed that our “rights” were being violated if the police looked at you library records.

I guess it is different if it is some unpopular religious sect being violated.

More Obama propaganda from the AP:

WASHINGTON – President-elect Barack Obama's plan for economic revival puts a big emphasis on public works projects. It also would rely on tax cuts.

But with the nation bruised by recession, with hundreds of thousands of jobs vanishing monthly, Obama's plan raises an urgent question: Will his remedies work fast enough?

The answer won't be clear for months or longer. In the meantime, pressure on the Obama team to deliver help quickly is intensifying.

At least as designed, the Obama plan, like a calibrated drug regimen, aims to deliver both short- and long-term relief.

Can tax cuts help rejuvenate the economy? Some are skeptical.

"Most infrastructure spending will create more jobs by year-end 2010 than a tax cut, particularly a temporary tax cut," said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Economy.com. "Some of any tax cut will be saved. And some of it will be spent on imported goods, reducing its jobs impact."

Yes, that's right tax cuts don't work but enormous govt. works projects will.

4 With Obama's outrageous spending program (not to mention Bush's), I fear we are becoming a cronyistic kleptocracy.

Tax cuts work because the market decides the winners and losers, not a bureaucrat deciding between family/friends and strangers.

This is true enough as far as it goes, but what it leaves out is that the "infrastructure spending" will either necessitate tax increases or borrowing, either of which will tend to mitigate its effectiveness.

At least the local constabulary didn't kick the door in, start shooting, and when overmatched, fell back and set the FLDS compound on fire, burning it to the ground with all inside.

I think it's FLDS Yearning for Zion Ranch that should be apologizing to America for those hair dos. When they were being detained, the state had to order and provide hairspray by the case load. No joke.

10 Funny how leftists can't ever seem to stop themselves from dishonestly trying to characterize tax cuts as a form of spending that will somehow blow a hole in the deficit... except when it comes to this sort of Keynesian bullshit about spending your way out of a recession.

When the fuck will the taxpayers get their bailout?

Wait a minute. I thought Barry's massive infrastructure spending was the answer to all of our problems.

Dec. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Missouri’s plan to spend $750 million in federal money on highways and nothing on mass transit in St. Louis doesn’t square with President-elect Barack Obama’s vision for a revolutionary re-engineering of the nation’s infrastructure.

Utah would pour 87 percent of the funds it may receive in a new economic stimulus bill into new road capacity. Arizona would spend $869 million of its $1.2 billion wish list on highways.

While many states are keeping their project lists secret, plans that have surfaced show why environmentalists and some development experts say much of the stimulus spending may promote urban sprawl while scrimping on more green-friendly rail and mass transit.

“It’s a lot of more of the same,” said Robert Puentes, a metropolitan growth and development expert at the Brookings Institute in Washington who is tracking the legislation. “You build a lot of new highways, continue to decentralize” urban and suburban communities and “pull resources away from transit.”

Barry's massive bullshit govt. works will go to the opposite of what lord Obama wants? How can this be? Good thing they got an "expert" to comment on this.

13 Defense spending most assuredly works.  It was the only thing that worked in the Great Depression after we started Lend Lease, a program that had us build all kinds of military equipment and "lease" the stuff to Russia and England.  We knew they could never pay us back and also knew the Nazis would destroy almost all of it shortly after arrival.  In other words we made shit and destroyed it and kept making more.  The payrolls around the factories suddenly took off, the workers spent money on homes and appliances and lend lease ended when we entered WWII.  To duplicate that now would mean that the government buy up all the foreclosed homes and burn them to the ground (thus ending the supply glut) and sell the property to home builders.  Fat chance of this happening.

15 Cutting defense for the so called Peace Dividend  was the second self inflicted wound that defeated Bush the elder.  Defense industry employment tanked as well as military dependent areas like San Diego.  California was lost politically, and the resulting recession allowed Billy Jeff to squeak to victory.

16 If you want a look at life inside the FLDS groups read, Escape by Carolyn Jessop. She was one of the wives of a high up member in Utah, before most of them moved to Texas. I have no information on what may have went on in Texas but it was probably similar.

20 Ace,

The state of Texas (referring to the FLDS report) has given ever changing reasons for proceeding against the FLDS.  First, it was "Sarah" who is now known to be a 33 year old black woman from Colorado, not a 16 year old abused girl in a basement at YFZ.  Right or wrong, the FLDS have no black members.  "Sarah" who is actually Rozita Swinton, has never had any children, she is not an abused pregnant child, she has a history of phony attention seeking distress calls.  The DFPS report still pretends it received a real phone call from a real person at YFZ.

Next Texas said it saw "pregnant underage teens" at YFZ and "children with children."   How Texas could "see" the age of a girl, or the venue in which she became pregnant, or the age of her partner in her pregnancy, we'll never know, but they no longer claim to have seen that girl or girls as a basis for proceeding with the raid.  Texas also claimed to see "children with children," something they have now downgraded to a sincere belief that women who were girls or girls that are or were underage "had children."

They now seem to be basing their entire case on Rozita Swinton, whom they refuse to investigate, and an interview with a girl or girls in which those girls stated underage marriage was acceptable.   For those reasons they broke down doors, surrounded the entire ranch with armed personel, broke open safes, confiscated records and cell phones, and broke into the FLDS temple, apparently desecrating it in their eyes.

At the same time the FLDS assets were being attacked and depleted in Utah via an argument over their trust.  Allen Steed, the man who supposedly "raped" a girl that formed the basis of Warren Jeffs "rape by proxy" conviction, has yet to be tried.  The indictments are not that solid, and may fall apart entirely if the evidence is shown to have been illegally obtained, which I believe to be the case.  Warren's conviction may eventually bust up on the rocks of no conviction in Allen Steed's case.

This was the largest child custody case in US history.  Some interesting other facts.  There were allegations of physical abuse based on a broken bone rate lower than the national average as a whole.  Just Tuesday Patrick Crimmins admitted that none of those cases were traced to abuse.

The rate of teenage pregnancy and sexual abuse and/or experimentation is lower than the national average as well.  They were only able to find 12 possible victims of sexual abuse out of over 200 girls.  That is not high, it is phenominally low.

Only one girl is still in CPS custody, having been re-taken by Texas, and that is a 14 year old supposedly "celestially wed" to Warren Jeffs, who cannot possibly represent any danger to her at the moment.

This is a travesty and an abuse of basic rights.  12 indictments, some of which have nothing to do directly with sexual abuse by a Grand Jury personally managed by an agenda driven judge is not an indictment of the FLDS, at least not yet.
