| Internet Lynch Mobs are an Ugly Thing...but not as ugly as standing by and letting a fucktard plagarize content. Iowahawk (AKA Dave Burge) is one of the funniest men on the interwebthingy, and even though he's a filthy Iowa Hawkeye fan, he's still a fellow native Iowan who's made good. Those of us in Iowa who have web access are just as proud of Mr. Burge as we are of other native Iowans who've made good, like John Wayne, Wyatt Earp, Herbert Hoover, the guy who played "Peter" on "Office Space" (Ron Livingston) or the woman who does the voice for Mrs. Krabappel on the Simpsons (Marcia Wallace). Dave put up a parody ad for "Congressional Motors" at his site back before Thanksgiving, and almost as soon as his genius hit the web, some douchebag "right-wing"* talk show host cut and pasted it onto his own station's website without a whisper of attribution to the creator. Here's a link to the fucktard and his station's (cough, cough) OPEN COMMENTS SECTION (cough). Now I'm not encouraging anyone to drive to San Diego to put a boot in Mr. Roberts' ass. I'm all about the love; and in the spirit of the Holiday Season, maybe we could show Mr. Roberts just a little glimpse of the love we have for asshats who steal the work of others and pass it off as their own. It's a tough love, but it's fair. For all the old-timers here, I'm thinking of that Progressive internet calendar from the Pacific Northwest that was open for ANYONE to add events. You remember the one I'm talking about (hint, hint, hint). And, courtesy of our brudda Sean M. over at doubleplusundead **, you can get the contact information for the San Diego radio station here, if you're so inclined. Just a couple of suggestions: 1. Don't threaten violence. We're better than that.2. Don't limit yourselves to commenting on the offending post. If that post goes all "Cool Facts About Dick Cheney" and builds up 3000 comments, they'll just bury it like a cat turd in a litterbox. Be creative and mention Rick Roberts' plagarism in other, unrelated, posts on their website. 3. Sean M. gave out the on-air contact number for KFMB. Rick Roberts is on-air from 5am to 9am Pacific Time (7 to 11 Central, or 8 to noon Eastern). As the old AT&T jingle goes.........."reach out, reach out and touch someone". * - Yeah, I used "scare quotes" when I called him a right-wing talk show host. Mostly because I'm right-wing myself, and I refuse to be associated with a thieving bag of crap like Mr. Roberts. ** - This is what's commonly referred to as a "hat-tip" among the internet crowd. The associated link, where you send traffic to the site where you originally noticed the content is also considered to be a required courtesy on the web. I mention this because I feel that Mr. Roberts is just the sort of douchenozzle who googles his own name daily, and if he reads this post I'd like to give him some helpful hints on how to play well with others on the internet. Because I'm all about the love. Merry Christmas, Morons. (This Internet Lynch Mob has not been endorsed by Mr. Ace or the O'Spades Corporation, mainly because he didn't get the chance to get a heads-up before I posted it. Got a problem? farmerruss "at" gmail "DOT" com. I'll probably ignore your email, but at least you can say you said your piece. And you can be damn sure that I won't steal your rant and post it here as my own original work.) Comments1
LOL, I went through about 25 comments and they all were crucifying him. One wonders if anyone at the stattion reads the comments. In a real world he would be fired. He has exposed the sation to legal liability in the samer manner as if the were playing pirated music. Posted by: Vic at December 24, 2008 09:15 AM (f6os6) 2
Hmmm. This is a real problem all across the blogosphere, you know, especially when it comes to sporting blogs. (Google "michigan blog espn" for example.) Someone needs to set up a blog to track all the instances of this. It'd be nice to have a clearinghouse. Maybe that's what I'll do at work today. Harrummpphh... plagiarism. Heh. Love it. Seriously, though, this is a real problem for the blogosphere... without getting credit when we push something into the mainstream, we don't get more readership, more money, (in most cases, of course, no money at all.) For Citizen Journalism to really take off, unfortunately, it's going to have to be bootstrapped, wittingly or unwittingly, by elements of the mainstream media. Which, yknow, is why they refuse to give credit. Sigh. What a prick. (Real journalists have been destroyed over what this prick did.) Posted by: jdub at December 24, 2008 09:35 AM (t9pKb) 6

Iowahawk is funny as hell, I heard about Roberts plagiarism last night. There were some 800 comments on the boosted blog railing Roberts for stealing Burges work.
This Roberts idiot is obviously a no-talent hack. He probably gleans the blogosphere for content, as he has no ideas of his own. Posted by: Nyctalus Lasiopterus at December 24, 2008 09:55 AM (EPSru) 12
Walton and Johnson did the same thing - ripped off Pilgrim at Say Anything, and were pretty arrogant about doing so. Until enough pressure was applied and the whole thing went down the memory hole; probably the best outcome we can hope for.

This kind of stuff is what the DMCA take-down notice is all about. On-line authors should familiarize themselves with the process. It only takes one e-mail and 99% of web hosts will respond, because it immunizes them from liability if done correctly.
To get the offending work put back up, the other side has to certify it's actually their own content, and if they're wrong they pay attorney fees for both sides. Posted by: Bid Butler at December 24, 2008 10:05 AM (JyfVU) 15
Just sent a letter to the person listed on whois as the technical contact, asking if he was familiar with his employer's obligations under the DMCA. it's lawrence@kfmb.com, in case anyone wants to, say, contact a lawyer and send a DCMA takedown. Looking in your directon here, Iowahawk. Actually, the best thing wouldn't be a takedown, but a simple acknowledgement in the post, with a link and a brief apology. apotheosis has a point here. Don't judge Mr. Roberts by his single solitary act of stealing original content from Iowahawk. Judge him by his plagarism AND the fact that it's been a month since he stole this and he hasn't found the time to post an apologetic update to the original plagarized post. apotheosis, I would say that just sitting on the issue & hoping it goes away is pretty much the equivalent of a coverup; however, since the relevant quote I was looking for specifically referenced "coverup" and not "ignore the problem & hope it'll go away", I was hoping that you would make the mental correction yourself. I guess I was wrong. Who knew that the President of the Rick Roberts Fan Club was a reader of the AoSHQ as well? Talk about coincidence. Hey all -
I do appreciate the sentiment, but I don't want to see anyone lose a job over it. I vented because this crap has happened to me too many times before, and it was the proverbial last straw. Commercial media is continually bitching about the internet "ripping off" their content, but in my experience the thievery is much worse in the other direction. Forget about message boards and other blogs -- in the last year I have had my stuff reproduced in full, without permission (and most of the time without attribution), by dozens of commercial talk radio hosts - GG Liddy, local hosts in SF, San Diego, Dallas, Denver, Tulsa, Atlanta, etc., not to mention the Times of London, Rocky Mountain News, and the Weekly Standard. To be fair, ToL and Weekly Standard made good when it was pointed out to them, and were very apologetic. As a rule, though, most of them don't give a shit, and think I should be giddy that Chuck "Take Back America" Knobsucker of Shelbyville's 50,000 watt talk blowtorch has deigned to appoint me as his uncredited, unpaid gag writer. It's not really a money thing. I never intended my blog to be a commercial enterprise. I don't accept ads, and I'm thrilled that I get enough tips to cover my TypePad account cost. But it just fucking enrages me to see my stuff reproduced like that, next to a banner ad that I'm sure generated more revenue than my entire blog does in a year. Dave (Iowahawk, not "Dave the Rickrolling Fucktard"), I'm glad you're not feeling vengeful towards Mr. Roberts over this theft, but please allow the rest of us to demand our pound of flesh over this scandal. Yeah, it's a bit of a tempest in a teapot, but after all, this is the internet: EVERYTHING is ratcheted up to ELEVEN!!!1!! on the drama-meter. Mr. Roberts not only stole material from one of the funniest men in the blogosphere, but he also took a giant steaming shit on his fellow conservatives. Now that he's an admitted plagarist, the media will surely use him in their rogues' gallery of conservative boogeymen. Whenever they need to discredit something another conservative has written, they'll use him as an example of how conservatives regularly steal ideas from other people and take credit for themselves. His misdeeds reflect badly on the rest of us - plus the fact that I have to call him "Mr. Roberts" is a slur upon one of Henry Fonda's better movies. (As a Cyclone fan, I'm used to standing up for my Hawkeye brethren. I like to think of it as the same relationship that Lenny & George had in Steinbeck's "Mice & Men" - whenever our feebleminded Hawkeyes get into trouble, you can always count on Cyclones to show up and help them hide the body. Or put a bullet in their head to put them out of their misery - depends on how close behind us the posse is.) Posted by: Russ from Winterset at December 24, 2008 01:17 PM (cdAdD) 69

Moreover, if you can't get into a good college or your parents aren’t married or your married to your sister there’s always Iowa. Posted by: Murph at December 24, 2008 04:40 PM (WrP0N) 85
Yea, it's all gone. But what about the money they earned from hits while using Dave Burge's material? They owe him. Every time Rick ROB comes on Savage I'm calling the station and telling them I'm refusing to tune in because it's disgusting having a man who earns his living talking about the corruption of the American culture being the very thing he rants about. How can Rick ROB talk about Americans being fleeced by their government when _he_ is a crook?

serr8d, that's great! I hope you sent it to Iowahawk, it would make a lovely Christmas card for him.

Wow, they've scrubbed and replaced pretty much their entire web site. When I went to log in to the message board, with the account I created this morning, my account -- and all the messages -- no longer existed.
Wouldn't it be easier to just man up and admit the crime? Posted by: notropis at December 24, 2008 05:43 PM (SmUBz) 90
And they backdated their changes to Dec. 23 (how convenient), and Rick (the brave guy he is) changed his e-mail.

BTW, guys, you realize that we can still wave the bloody plagiarism shirt on comments at other parts of the site. I wouldn't have suggested doing so if he'd let the correction stand. but the orwellian cocksuckers memory-holed. the whole shebang. No mercy for those evil shits. OT, but: Granted he is a Douche - but not such a nozzle! We should un-use the term "douchenozzle". Better is to use the term EnnemaNozzle. Because douchenozzle's are good um-kay. (Fresher!) i.e. He is an EnnemaNozzle! (Stinker!) Thusly, his name is a conduit to explused shit.

17 Rush frequently borrows from the net for his "giant stack of stuff" but he always gives credit. How hard is that? Sometimes I think he just reads this blog on the air. Not usually attributed, like he does for Michelle and Drudge. Posted by: ATNorth at December 24, 2008 11:57 PM (dBJw1) 97

I guess I was wrong. Who knew that the President of the Rick Roberts
Fan Club was a reader of the AoSHQ as well? Talk about coincidence.
Jesus russ, don't be such a finger-wagging little faggot. I said the guy was good when he was on the air in KC years ago, not that he was still worth a goddamn. Posted by: apotheosis at December 25, 2008 12:18 PM (xWk3U) 99
Other notable Iowans are John Wayne (also from Winterset), Glenn Miller and Marilyn Maxwell (both from Clarinda).
And me. Although I'm not famous But I am from Clarinda. Posted by: Larry at December 26, 2008 12:25 AM (qjWXO) 100
87 serr8d: That was pretty good. I'm agnostic, and I even liked it. As for Roberts, I sent this to him via e-mail: You are aware that you cut and pasted that particular satire from Iowahawk, aren't you? Using an article or commentary without proper credit is very crass, Mr. Roberts. You should either delete the piece or credit the owner, Dave Burge, with the authorship.
