Brit Hume Signs Off For Last Time

FoxNews just did a clip about his stint at the show that I hope will go up on YouTube.

It's just not going to be the same. Brett Baier is fine, but he's no Brit.

1 Here, here.  Still it's good to know that Brit will still be around in some capacity (perhaps panelist from time to time?).

2 Is Brit Hume retiring or going off to a non-media gig?

Posted by: Fernandozer at December 23, 2008 07:03 PM (x5Ls9)

3 He's retiring to a part-time role, special stuff and election coverage, etc.  Bye Bit, good job yo.

Posted by: Robert at December 23, 2008 07:05 PM (VotgB)

4 Thanks for the info, Robert.  None of the reports I've read mentioned what he was going to be doing now.

6 Well, this may be the last time I watch Fox News for a while.

I already gave up on the blowhards that come on after Shep, whom I gave up on during Katrina. So there won't be much to attract me.

At least there's still Red Eye.

7 Brit Hume is hawt!

I'm gonna miss him. He brought some real class to Fox.

Posted by: Y-not at December 23, 2008 07:10 PM (dC8te)

8 Bret was one of the main reasons I watched that hour - just about everything else on Fox is fluff  or screaming heads.   Back when he covered the White House for ABC he stood out as so difference then his peers...he will be missed.   Baier is OK but I'm concerned that he is closer to his MSM peers in thinking then Hume is - hope I'm mistaken....I was kind of hoping that they would put Megyn Kelly in that chair....I think she had the potential - very quick on her feet - and easy to look at.   Hard for the MSM to go after her after CBS put the "Perky Katie" on their nightly news....

I saw the tribute - surprised that Roger Alies did not contributed a comment.  Now when THAT guy steps down the earth will shake....what a GREAT fellow he is...

9 Just watched his sign off. Sad, but he'll be back. Great story of him yelling at the GPS for "using bad grammar".

Posted by: Kathy Shaidle at December 23, 2008 07:25 PM (QBRHW)

10 Hume was the best in the business. His shoes cannot be filled.

Hopefully he'll be seen more often now as an opinionator rather than a moderator. I'm sure he has restrained his opinions to a great degree as the senior news editor at FOXNews, so he may get to do a bit more under a less restrained position.

11 Will miss Brit Hume...But hey if I had a nice country home in Va. I'd be retiring too. We have some property in SW Va... I just love it there... Cant wait to build a mountain home on it some day.....Merry Christmas, Happy Holiday, Happy  Hanukkah to all the gang here!!! Thanks for keeping things real this election season...

12 I'll never forget the day I got an email from Brit Hume when I wrote to the general email address to compliment the show several years ago on a story I don't remember. He was a classy guy. I have trouble imagining him being retired, though.

According to David Horowitz in his book "Radical Son", Brit was one of those early Berkeley radicals in 1964 like Horowitz.

I met Brett Baier after 9-11 when he was working the Pentagon beat. He seemed like a real nice guy, too. I know Baier did the best Pentagon reporting out of all of the networks in the months following the attack when I could still stomach the other networks. I wish him the best.

13 I think Brett Baier will fill that spot nicely.

15 Brit will be missed.  He's the epitome of the professional journalist, the last of a dying breed.  I don't think he ever really got over his son's suicide (not that any parent ever could, of course). He seemed to lose his enthusiasm for journalism after that.   Even so, he's still the best there is

16 Brit Hume gets 'em soppin' wet!!!

I would sooner have seen them retire the panel of Has Beens All-Stars than for Brit to retire himself.

Brit Hume is the only one I watch on FNC, other than the occasional Cavutto or Red Eye. Brett Baier has some big shoes to fill.

A while back, Brit joked he was retiring because FNC was going high def .

18 Crap.

I hope Brit has some very fond memories of the Fox News babes.

When is Shep going on maternity leave?

Posted by: eman at December 23, 2008 09:02 PM (L4oFX)

19 always a class act.  Even on sunday when he was going at it with juan williams he was classy, though much more outspoken.

I like Baier, but you're right: He's no Brit, but then, who is?

As someone mentioned above, Cavuto is one of my favorites, too, and I love that he has no problem with jumping in to fight when he disagrees with the opinion of another. He does so in an unoffensive manner.

Brit Hume is one class act and, just imagine what Fox News might have been without his guidance all these years. We may never know just how hard he had to struggle to maintain the 'Fair and Balanced' standard. And, he's laid a good foundation for the future whilst seemingly mentoring those who've come after him; Baier, Kelly, Matthews, maybe even Hemmer.  A few others around there aren' too bad either, but Hume clearly and directly had a hand in the formattion of the three (or four) mentioned above.

He will be missed and I will be up late to catch the reairing of the show tonight.

21 I prefer Brett over Brit. Maybe Brit has had a good show in the past, but he just didn't seem to have his heart into it lately. I watch Cavuto over on Fox Business during the same time slot as Brit on Fox News.
