Drudge Blare: Prosecutors Interviewed Obama
Obama Releases, Um, Report

Above the Main Post Update: Obama's lawyer Gregory Craig (remember him?) says prosecutors interviewed Obama.

President-elect Barack Obama and two of his top advisers were interviewed last week by federal prosecutors probing Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich's alleged bid to sell Obama's vacated Senate seat, according to a report issued today by an Obama lawyer. The lawyer, Gregory Craig, concluded that Obama and his aides engaged in no improper conduct in connection with the Senate opening.

Problematic? I don't believe that Obama would care enough about the Senate seat to risk his own neck engaging in bribery. However, I also think that Obama and Emanuel knew how the Chicago game was played and would not react with righteous indignation to the solicitation of a bribe -- they might steer Blago away from such a thing towards safer waters, but would not outright rebuke him.

So the problem comes if Obama's team's statements to Blago were more nuanced when it comes to improper solicitations than they're admitting. And their statements to prosecutors about their discussions had better be accurate, or else they risk an obstruction of justice charge.

Fitzgerald wouldn't have the guts for that. But it will be interesting to see how his information and Obama's claims match up.

Nothing legal will come of this. However, there might just be grist for the political mill. Not sure if I want to relive the endless scandals and endless farcical denials of the Clinton administration, but we may be on that track -- a long period of time when Obama is plausibly accused of lying and obstructing justice and yet there's never any resolution.

Thanks to CJ for the alert.

...

Here's a nugget:

See also the bottom of page 3 for a friendly chat between [Obama short-lister Valerie] Jarrett herself and an Illinois SEIU chief, who told her that Blagojevich had told him he wanted to be Health and Human Services head. They both agreed, allegedly, that “it would never happen,” but if you’re looking for evidence that people in Obama’s inner circle knew that Blago was interested in a position with Team Barry, there you go.

That's not the same as knowing Blago was offering an express quid pro quo.

But then, Barry's not entirely candid, is he?

Go-Betweens and Cut-Outs: JackStraw wants to know about indirect, back-channel discussions between the camps:

Who did Obama appoint as his political director? Patrick Gaspard, Vice President of SEIU Local 1199. What is the job of the politcal director? Probably has a lot to do with politics. The SEIU also endorsed and was the most active union working for Obama during the presidential election.

Gaspard used to be a muckety muck with America Coming Together, a sleazy 527 that used to be run by Harold Ickes and was funded by Soros but that's a whole different kettle of fish. ACT was sued out of busiess by the FEC a couple years ago for raising over $130 million of illegal coin for John Kerry.

Yet, astonishingly enough, he does not appear in the report. Odd, no?

It has been alleged that Balanoff, Pres of the SEIU in Chicago, served as a go between for Obama and Blago. Ya think there might have been a chance that Gaspard spoke with his former, former as in a couple days ago, colleague about some politics stuff?

Said it before, I'll say it again, the SEIU is a thoroughly corrupt organization and is going to be damaging to Obama sooner or later.

2 Oh, here Rethuglicans were expecting

Emmanuel passed the bong to Blago and said, "a million bucks, you're harshing my mellow." Obama chimed in with, "it didn't cost me no million bucks four years ago, why would you think it's gone up so much? -- and don't Bogart that, Blago."

instead of a complete whitewash...........NOT!

4 So, five or six contacts on Rahm's part, up from the 'None, no wait, one' we've been hearing and well short of the 21 our local gossip columnist mentioned.  And this report was amended after the feds played one of their tapes to Rahm.  So we can consider this the quasi-sort of-semi-final report from the PE office on the matter.  Until we learn the next thing that doesn't fit their version of events.

If only we had a free and interested press someone would be digging into the endless ties between Obama, SEIU, ACORN and Soros among other assorted scum.  It would be a hell of a story and expose Obama for the typical lefty he is instead of a messiah.

Sadly, we don't.

8 But, if confidant Jarrett knew that Blago wanted a future appointment, does she have NO obligation to report that?  Is a future appointment not *selling* the seat?  Regardless of whether or not she told Rahm or Obama, and I am being very serious......is this not illegal?  If it is not, I am turning in my US citizen card.

How come it says Rahm had "one or two" calls with Blago? Shouldn't they know exactly? Aren't there phone records? Isn't the whole point of this report to clearly describe what their contacts were with Blago?

"One or two" is too vague. I'm guessing, like, six calls at a minimum.

Yep. If I were a reporter, I would be positively drooling over this story. It's got the potential to be a best selling book, as well as selling magazines, etc.

And then, the movie, first black president destroys his own opportunity/future by being a corrupt scumbag(assuming things break that way).

This story could be pure gold.

18 Obama's team has found no evidence of Obama team malfeasance.  Whew, I thought the Obama team might just get the Obama team in trouble!  Now the Obama team can continue to promote the upcoming Obama team.  When asked, the Obama team said that the Obama team is "on track to be the greatest Obama team ever in the history of this soon to be fried world".  Only massive spending by the Obama team will help prevent this catastrophe. Thank God, there is always a bailout.  Oh, forget the God part.

rinseandspit-

The Obama-Balanoff relationship goes back to when Obama landed in Chicago after Harvard.  He has been a political supporter of Obama's since his first race.  Interestingly, Balanoff's parents were both member of the Communist Party in Chicago just like a certain father figure of Obama's.

How close were Obama and Balanoff?  This close. (it's definitely worth the watch)

http://tiny.cc/LVVaF

Anywho, Balanoff has also been a political benefactor of Blagos, trading cash for pro-union legislation.  One might call it Pay to Play.  Check out this quote from the American Prospect:

“In exchange for its support, the SEIU won a specific commitment from Blagojevich: an executive order that created collective bargaining rights for the state's 25,000 home-care workers….With his executive order, Blagojevich removed those workers from legal limbo, and the SEIU won the vote of the members to represent them at the bargaining table. On February 18 of this year, Blagojevich signed an equivalent order for the state's 48,000 child-care workers, decreeing that a representation election be held within 42 days.”

And yet I just heard David Shuster, a guy who practically lived at the court house during the Plame investigation, say that this report puts the issue to bed.  These guys got skillz.

What are the chances that Obama will have to give a deposition though?

Posted by: AdamTheMadden at December 23, 2008 06:59 PM (kIjlp)

27

Well, sorta Tushar.  Whitewater was blooming while Clinton was Gov of Arkansas and one of his first acts after taking office was to fire all the federal prosecutors to get rid of the pesky one who was hounding him and he replaced him with Paula Casey, one of his stooges.

But the press was in love with Clinton and they ignored it just like they are trying to do with this one.  Replacing federal prosecutors didn't become a scandal until Bush replaced 8 of them after their terms expired.

DID FITZ THINK IT WOULD HAVE BEEN UNPATRIOTIC FOR VOTERS TO FIND OUT OBAMA HAD SOJURNED WITH SCUM HIS WHOLE ADULT LIFE!?!?!

I can't imagine that politicians as clued in as Obama and Emanuel would make any sort of mistake when dealing with a stumble bum like Blago.  They certainly were aware of the Fed's interest in the guy.

Looks as if we'll have to wiat for another scandal.  Sigh.

Posted by: Pigilito at December 23, 2008 07:37 PM (U2TXr)

34 Pigilito, this was a report released by Obama's lawyer, who doesn't have access to the tapes.  This is an attempt at an end, not an end.

Posted by: Methos at December 23, 2008 07:41 PM (9AV8Z)

35

This is an attempt at an end, not an end.

Yep.  And importantly, we may have already won a significant battle.  Nobody was bigger for Obama than the SEIU in this last election and no issue was bigger for the SEIU than Employee Free Choice Act, aka, card check.  This is one of the most dangerous (potentially unconstitutional) pieces of legislation I can imagine giving the union bosses enormous power.  Obama had pledged to make this one of his first acts after taking office.  It is a total quid pro quo with the unions even if it is technically legal.

If the SEIU gets damaged by this scandal even if Obama doesn't, that legislation is going to have a much tougher road to hoe.

40 There are two kinds of politicians in Illinois. Crooks and those who haven't been caught.

When voting in Illinois how do you know which candidate is the most honest? The most honest candidate is not on the ballot.

How can you tell which is the crookedest candidate? Easy: the crookedest candidate is the reform candidate.

41 Y'know guys, after the recent public pronouncements of the Hon. Sen. John McCain (in re whatever you care to dispositate upon) ...and as much as I truly, *truly* enjoy the Gift of Fitzmas Spectacle being played out ...and given the bones O's been throwin' to the center with his appointments ...I be finding it real hard to work up any kind of righteously indulgent hopefulness about teh One committing teh Deep Suck (well, for a couple of years, when the Season begins anew, at least).

I just don't see the Right any worse off. And just maybe, we be better off. Although - full disclosure - I really, really didn't like Mac' to begin with, and he hasn't endeared himself to me in the interim either.

Everything sucks, and was gonna suck anyways, no matter the outcome. This way the Dem's carry the suck ...and McCain lost. Win-win.

...and the arguments for affirmative action and charges of racism are going to be ringing increasingly hollow.

...a very Merry Christmas indeed.

42 When it all gets made into a movie, Denzel Washington will play a scrappy young president elect, the first African-American one, dontcha know.  He will thwart the evil machinations of a corrupt Republican governor from.....California, yea, that's the ticket.  The governor will be played by...ah hell, goin' out on a limb here...Arnold Schwartzawossname.  The Gov will try to sell the senate seat Denzel has just vacated to a smarmy Australian Broadcast/Media Fatcat played by a digitized Zombie Charlton Heston.  Aided by his diminuitive but fiesty side kick Ron Erasmus (Seth Green), who dies heroically, and with his best girl (an American pit bulldog) by his side, Denzel stops the Gov's evil plot, bitch slaps the wicked and inept President of the United States (Dom Delouise) and ends the Irag war.

43 I think that we are seeing that Emanuel is even less expendable than Obama.  It would be so much easier for Obama to say "This isn't the Rahm I knew."

Note that Rahm can't take a fall here.  They're doing all they can to cover for him.  I think we need to keep the focus on Rahm and not bother with Obama himself.  Obama is the person least responsible with what goes on with his administration.

So, how do we keep the heat on Rahm?

59 Of course, Jesus was an extraterrestrial. And, Blago's hair is clearly not of this earth. Also, Obama's plans are CLEARLY designed to serve Satan. As well, Conan's god Crom is BELOW the earth (with Satan). Thus, there is no upper limit to ObamBlagoLincolnivech's possible involvement with aforementioned Nazi-death-camp revival plans. Also, sex parties. With COCAINE. Ipso Facto, anything Blago has ever done, or will do in the future, is directly and logically designed to facilitate *Alien-Jesus's Super-Nefarious Plan to Corrupt Our Nation's Youth. And also, to help the Fags get married.

*Alien-Jesus not to be confused with the cool, laid back Jesus of (some) parts of the New Testament. That guy ROCKS!

We might as well enjoy the show while it lasts.  In a month or two it will be all about the new administration and how glorious the One is, and this will be quietly buried.  I expect Blago to take a fall (if he knows whats good for him) and shut up.  Of course, he could end up like poor Vince Foster, but I doubt the One will be that blatant (yet).

It's mildly amusing and disgusting in equal measure that people thought a politician from the most corrupt big city in the country would be magicallly untouched by the culture he matured in. Even with the MSM out-doing Pravda to cover for him, it's simply amazing how people can believe he is the One, but then again I guess its not too hard to believe when you expect to get your mortage and car payments taken care of.

62 Off topic a bit, but I saw something I thought was funny some says back. Some local Chi-town rappers made a video, it's on youtube, called  "Dey know, Blago." I thought it was a good job for a throw-together, and I can't get it out of my head. As for Fitz, for some reason, I don't trust him. I think he may have not handled this just exactly  right. I guess what bothers me is that he knew for 2 yrs. that Armitage was the Plame-leaker, though not really, as she was not covert, only a spokesperson for the CIA. He still went after Libby when his real case imploded, and managed to get Libby for a bad memory, and trying to cover his ass. Now he could have let this play out and seen who would actually pay for the seat, and let all the transactions go through. Then it is a cut and dried case. When Fitz gave the lame explanation that they didn't want it to get that far becuase it might taint the person that would be in there. Is it just me, but if the person was given the seat, if they busted them then, it would be like killing 2 birds with one stone, because we know that person  would  have had to pay for or give Blago something for gettin in there. I'm suspicious of Fitz, I wonder if he isn't just into getting people because he wants to be top dog, Mr. Powerful.
