Rather Continues Lying About Forged Documents; NPR Aids and Abets

Charles Johnson makes a point here: Why is it that the MSM has never offered the visual proof he constructed of the famously alternating GIF?

Seems to be two possibilities:

1. They didn't think of it and would prefer not to acknowledge the contribution of a non-guild member.

2. The GIF is damning and ends all debate.

Incidentally, Rather continues clinging to the claim that the forgeries were never "officially" determined 100% to be fakes. This is... true, in a way. The CBS report by Boccardi and Thornburgh says that, that there is no proof one way or the other. (By the way: For those keeping score -- the media likes to note that a Republican, Thornburgh, wrote the report, but fails to note that Boccardi of the AP is almost certainly a liberal Democrat, and fails to note the whole investigation was paid for by CBS. And he who plays the piper calls the tune. They darkly hint that Thornburgh's Republican affiliation taints the report, without pausing for a moment to consider that perhaps the report is too easy on CBS due to the fact that CBS paid for the report.)

While the report claims that, an appendix by an expert leaves no doubt whatsoever that the documents are forged. If one wants to see the real verdict on the documents, one must look to Appendix 4, where an expert declares without equivocation they were produced on a modern computer:

(2) The font/typestyle of the documents: The Thornburgh-Boccardi report provides the analysis of forensic document examiner and typewriter expert Peter Tytell, both in the text and at greater length in the report's Appendix 4. Tytell is a diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Documents Examiners and a highly qualified expert on the issues raised by the typographic characteristics of the documents. Tytell examined the official Bush Guard documents as well as the CBS documents procured from Burkett and concluded that the Burkett documents were produced on a computer in Times New Roman typestyle.
According to Tytell, Times New Roman was designed in 1931 for the Times of London and was only available on typesetting and other non-tabletop machines until the desktop publishing revolution in the 1980s. Tytell concluded that the Times New Roman typestyle was not available on a typewriter in the early 1970s and that the Burkett documents must have been produced on a computer. The Thornburgh-Boccardi report states: "The [Thornburgh-Boccardi] Panel met with Tytell and found his analysis sound in terms of why he believed that the documents are not authentic." If the documents are not authentic, they are frauds.

It seems that CBS' "complete" PDF of the Thornburgh report is not quite complete enough to include that damning appendix.

But it's still findable on the web. Barely. If you do enough googling to find the right search terms, and then conduct a new search. The obvious search -- Thornburg Rather -- leads to the top result of the CBS "complete report" which fails to even mention it originally ran with appendices.

The Republican-tainted Thornburgh did a confused old man, as well as his employer CBS, a favor by pretending there was a shred of doubt when their own expert said otherwise. But that little favor has of course now become the main finding of the report, in Rather's and the MSM's telling, as was inevitable.

5 That helps me a little in these debates. The thing I always hear being brought out is about how certain effects like superscripting are on the document and that typewriters at the time couldn't do this, is then countered that IBM did release one right around this time that is capable of that. The things about font usage and when that came into practice as determined by an expert I think will help me in shutting up people when they try that end-around next time.

Fortunately, this is one of those cases where even the tireless Stalinists of the left can't sufficiently whitewash the truth. Rather has devolved into irrelevance and is going to die that way. And no one who isn't already a drooling libzombie watches his fifth-tier cable show or forges their reality from NPR.

The die is cast. Rather used forged documents to try to swing a Presidential election and was subsequently humiliated and driven off the air. It's an ingrained part of history that no one at this point has the energy or interest to revise.

Which should be easy to do, just a matter of doing some research to find which model(s) of typesetting machine supported the exact typographic characteristics of the document, then producing some records showing that there was one of these machines at the TANG office. Showing that it was regularly used to produce memos that were put in peoples' files might be a bit tougher, but hey, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt at that point.

No, he served the interest of his client, CBS. Flatly calling the docs forgeries could have had legal ramifications, like nuisance suits from those who passed them off to Mapes. And it would have allowed others to write that CBS admits it ran story based on obvious forgeries. CBS had a rep it wanted to protect beyond Rather's tenure.

And the first sentence of comment #1 is key. The burden was/is on Rather/ Mapes/ CBS. It's a measure of NPR's taxpayer-funded lack of integrity that they ignore this obvious point.

1) No Officer would pen a memo titled "CYA". By definition, the CYA would cause MORE damage to an officer's career, than not writing at all. The CYA implies some complicity without honor. Either you make a stand or you don't, using the CYA is taking the middle of the road approach which will get you in trouble either way.

2) THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN OETR!!!! On page 148 the authors make a lame attempt to try to excuse this mistake by stating there is such a document as a "Notice of Missing or Correction of Officer Effectiveness/Training Report" (With the stipulation that they can find no references to an OETR in any documentation beside the memo). But the problem with this title is that it addresses corrections to TWO DIFFERENT DOCUMENTS! An Officer Effectiveness Report and and Officer Training Report (i.e. an OER or an OTR)... It is impossible that anyone in the military would make up a term for a non-existent document.

29 In 1973 I started my first job at an engineering software company that needed to document how the software implemented continuum mechanics formulas that mixed sub/superscripts and latin/greek letters. The boss bought what he could afford - IBM Mag Card IIs that required a full week of operator training and cost the equivalent of two Buicks. These couldn't do kerning or proportional spacing - IBM made one that did - sort of a hybrid typewriter/typesetter. God only knows how many Buicks that baby cost. And that didn't include a way to print Times Roman.
The thought that some Reserve unit in the back end of Nowhere, TX had such a unit is laughable, as is the idea that some random senior officer would have lowered himself to a) the training and b)actually programming the missive and generating the paper document. I know that none of the engineers where I worked (a few of whom were actually pretty smart) could use the simpler Mag IIs.

The influence peddling I have seen never involves a smoking gun memo in the first place. Everyone knows who the influential people are, or they will quickly be told. From my experience there is no need to even discuss helping the guy, everyone assumes automatically that it is in their interest to do so without question. At most a quiet mention of who he is will suffice, and no one ever leaves a paper trail to hang themselves with.
