| Top Headline Comments 12-23-08Some news bytes for ya: 2008 in Photos. Some really good ones in there. Ignore the editorializing. Rick Warren makes an amateur mistake, scrubs website (Warning: I think there's a faulty script at that link; takes forever to load). What used to be here about homosexuality #48 [link removed as it was busting the blog] now directs you here. As Biden desperately tries to shrink the role of the Vice President, Clinton is trying to boost the importance and power of the Secretary of State. In related financial news, popcorn futures are up. In entertainment news, J. Michael Straczynski's rumored remake of The Forbidden Planet might actually be a trilogy. James Cameron is said to be looking to direct. And finally, in the category "I'm Embarrassed That You Purport to Represent Me": the American Family Association has issued an "Action Alert" warning consumers that the Campbell Soup Company "gave their approval to the entire homosexual agenda." Says the AFA about ads which ran in a gay magazine, the Advocate:Campbell Soup Company has openly begun helping homosexual activists push their agenda. Not only did the ads cost Campbell's a chunk of money, but they also sent a message that homosexual parents constitute a family and are worthy of support.I'll be using Campbell's for all my Christmas day casserole needs. I can't remember where I read this- too busy exulting over my fantasy football championship (for money, folks!)- but the whole Rick Warren thing brings up the greatest problem with most libs these days (and also with the American Family Association)- can we talk about anything without its political implications?
Christ, my Saints could win the Super Bowl, and it'd be discussed as how it's a repudiation of George Bush. And Gabe, I'll be right alongside you on using the Campbell's... also because my wife greatly prefers their chicken broth. tmi3rd Posted by: tmi3rd at December 23, 2008 10:33 AM (nHN8Z) 2
Don't go too far with trying to asserting control, Hillary.

The Times cited an unnamed Hillary Clinton adviser as saying her push for a more vigorous economic team stems from her belief that the State Department needs to play a part in the recovery from the global financial crisis, while economic issues also are at the heart of key diplomatic relationships, notably with China. The former first lady also is reportedly likely to name several high-powered envoys to world hotspots.

Sorry Gabe,
I'm happy about the heads-up over Campbells soup. Reason being, the gay community is pissing all over anyone that they think was behind Prop 8, while the schmucks that were working against it get off scott-free. Examples: Google, Yahoo, Macintosh... These are big names. A boycott worked with MacDonalds, it's time to put the crunch to Campbells. I have nothing against homosexual behavior. Knock yourselves out. I have a big problem with insanely militant gays trying to push the notion that what they do is normal onto American Society. Bullsh*t! Campbell's Soup = Andy Warhol Andy Warhol = teh ghey Transitive relation: Campbell's Soup = ghey. OT, the company's "2008 Corporate Social Responsibility Report" definitely gives off that creepy corporate vibe: "social responsibility"/endorsement of questionable environmental causes/championing of ill-defined "diversity celebration"/mission to get involved in your life whether or not you know it or care. In the spirit of making everythng political, from today's WSJ: "In its first holiday season under new Chief Executive John Donahoe, eBay is suffering a slide in visitor traffic and deteriorating sales. Customers are leaving for fixed-priced sites where eBay has less of an edge, and because of continued problems with unscrupulous sellers." Remember way back in the fall when "our" candidate for President was touting eBay as an example for his economic policies when the equity and credit markets were collapsing and Bernanke and Paulson were running around like Chicken Little? Washington (AP): In a season of political high theatre, one university professor is stirring the soup--the ideological soup, that is. After seven years of surveying and analysis, Dr. Phil Mycrakin has determined that political affiliation can be traced to affinity for certain flavors of the ubiquitous Campbells Soup. Chicken noodle soup, he claims, is the favorite of the left-leaning prole: "There's a completely unjustifiable belief in its therapeutic properties," he said. "It's 'cubed chicken'-infused salt water with flakes of dried parsley and turmeric for coloring. It's entirely benign--and useless as a common cold cure." His finding, he claims, coincides with Left affinities for scientifically baseless environmental causes, belief in a Jungian-style "societal commonality of good intention," and electoral attraction to style over substance. "JFK was a chicken-soup candidate," Mycrakin claims. "The current president-elect embodies this insubstantial, non-challenging characteristic." Conservatives, on the other hand, gravitate to the more substantial legume-based flavors. "Split pea with ham? Straight GOP ticket voter. Same with bean and bacon. Both were favorites of Ronald Reagan." He dismissed the cream-based soups from consideration, nothing that these types constitute "an emphemeral body of soup that lacks any defining characteristic, save for the 'creaminess' of its constituency. You could make 'cream of beef' soup, and you'd have a conservative soup. A 'cream of tofu' liberal construction would likewise be possible--and be likewise disgusting." Can anyone pinpoint the year when it became fashionable for companies and entertainment acts to get political and come down on one side or another?
Take the example of the Dixie Chicks making their inane anti0-Bush anti-U.S. statements over in Britain. Unless they were totally stupid they had to know it was going to piss off a lot of their fans and audience members. Well, they did it and it did and they went into a tailspin. They eventually recovered somewhat, but they never did get their original fan base back.
Anytime a company that has to sell a product to make a profit endorses one side of an argument they are asking for the other side to quit buying their product. It just doesn’t make any sense for a CEO to kill a large portion of the company’s target population. If I was on the BODs of one of these companies that did something like this I would start a board movement to fire the CEO.
Campbell’s should be in the business of selling soup, not endorsing anything. Posted by: Vic at December 23, 2008 11:46 AM (f6os6) Posted by: thebronze at December 23, 2008 11:50 AM (cwNXc) 45

Advertisement = conversion. Can anyone pinpoint the year when it became fashionable for companies and entertainment acts to get political and come down on one side or another? Can't "pinpoint" it, but my guess is entertainment acts would be 1960 (The Rat Pack for JFK) and maybe eight years later for Nixon (Burma-Shave roadside placards: "Keep Your/Mug All/Nice And Spiffy/Else You'll Be/A Goddamn Hippie/Nixon's The One In '68") Or sumpin' like that. WTF people, get a grip. The ads don't have any 'political' content, unless you think acknowledging that gay people exist and buy soup is political.
They advertised in a gay magazine. They tailored the ads to the target audience somewhat by having a lesbian couple in one. The other ads have a chef who looks like a homo, but isn't identified as such. BFD. If they advertised in Ebony, they'd use black people in the ads, but I wouldn't assume they supported Reverend Wright's 'kill whitey' agenda. But that reminds me of the time I was having a slice of pizza at a local pizzaria that was basically across the street from a Taco Hell, and this really smoking hawt bleeding heart liberal chick came in and sat down and asked me to boycott Taco Hell for some sin - I think buying el cheapo veggies picked by migrant labor for 5 cents on the dollar. I nodded sympathetically, said it was terrible injustice and sure I'd avoid Taco Hell all the while enjoying the increase in blood pressure and heart rate due to her hawtness. Of course, I can't say when the last time I've ever been to a Taco Hell. I should have asked her for her number. So we could, ummm, discuss the plight of the migrant farm worker. About 10 years ago or so one could boycott comanies for taking certain political/moral stands and you could make a noticeable splash in the pool. Lemme append what I said: Whatever way you swing is irrelevant to matters of the mind. Politics is the science of the mob. I hope readers here enjoy perhaps being at least a foot above the mob? Maybe for a little serene moment of reflection? I myself live in the mountains. No one but animals up here. The occasional liberal stumbles up here... I usually have to help him down, because the sun has set and they can't walk back without a guide.
My point is: when you're walking the path, day or night, up the mountain or down, the last thing on my mind is the sexual preference of the person I'm helping. Unless it's a hot chick, but even then my concern for her safety is greater than whether she takes it or not. A mensch overcomes his bodily desires. What man allows his 'cattle' to overcome him? But, since you say "no one but animals up here," I guess we know where you draw the line. Just curious, are you all bothered when Ace posts up the big-titted Japanese chick pic's, too? Earlier this year McDonalds made some humongous donation to the homosexual political movement and hubby and I discusses whether or not to boycott (they make pretty good coffee most of the time). Hubby sent them an email asking them why they were compelled to make a public, political statement; he thought they were in the food-selling business. Their reply was some vague, fluffy statement about how they supported families, blah, blah, that could have been the Declaration of Independence if you wanted it to. Anyhow, we decided to keep buying coffee from McD's. Unless you're a noisy thug that gets your 15 minutes of fame on CNN, I don't think a personal boycott carries any weight anymore. I forgot where I was going with this, but I think it was that I buy what I like and don't worry about their politics or orientation anymore. America is no longer a "Christian" nation, but we are still free (mostly). Posted by: katya at December 23, 2008 01:10 PM (oRJZj) 84

Learn to make the white sauce, put a little celery or mushrooms in it and you have a better sauce than Campbell's at a cheaper price. And no I am not gay. I like to eat. Let me also say that I despise the way the Democrats play fast and loose with the Constitution. Clinton and Biden need to learn the responsibilities of their new positions and limit themselves to that. It is easy to imagine though that they are thinking about future runs at the Presidency. Our politics are going to the dogs. I doubt that our metrosexual President has the macho to put Biden and Clinton in their place.

Notropis,
Kama Sutra has really altered perceptions about India in the West. What that book and those sculptures show are the activities of the royals. The common man could not afford to indulge in these things. He would be grateful if his wife would put out once in a while, just like people all over the world. BTW, I have no problem with Campbell advertising in gay magazines. Even targeted ads showing lesb couples. As long as they are hot. But I do get pissed at all the advertisers showing men as dumb dolts and women as smart ones. No one dares do it the other way. Posted by: Tushar at December 23, 2008 01:32 PM (PTWes) 97
"I'll be using Campbell's for all my Christmas day casserole needs"
I sure as hell won't: Campbell's soup sucks (inadvertent pun, although I wouldn't have thought so prior to your politicizing bad soup: which, btw Malor, is exactly what YOU did ...try reading your copy prior to posting dude: how the hell did you THINK the above was going to be read ...so your false protestations of righteous indignation seem a bit shallow given after that fact ...can't not note that it's sad that the idiots maneuvering the post-8 disturbances are trying to conflate legal acceptance with social approval ...which ain't gonna happen, primarily since hedonism - which is pretty much THE point if you take away the bogus pseudo-genetic shit, eh - in general is a sign of cultural malaise in every historical context) ...and has ever since my taste buds developed beyond their [unlamented] adolescent angst period. Progresso makes canned soups good enough to stand on their own (note that I said *canned*). Campbell's is a tasteless-other-than-too-much-sodium heart attack in a can (to de-gayify the argument). ...and if I want base stock for anything, I make it (or tear open the packaging). Never much cared for Progresso. the ones i've tried tasted like crap to me. AFA is having a hernia over a BFD, this coming from a guy who is for traditional marriage and against the militant homo agenda - your typical "concerned christian conservative". Gabe, im behind... err beside... ya on this one. Welcome to beautiful VA btw, even if lots of libs are bringing their f'd up politics with them to my home state. It got real cold here so Al Gore is probably nearby.
as for supporting homosexual families... I dont get that out of the ad. And if they are parents already (according to the AFA), then why not? its better for the kid. campbells has done alot of good humanitarian work, so I am not gonna knock them. I remember the "collect the labels" soup drive for the hungry from when I was a kid. Frankly, sometimes doing such work is a benefit to the business and enhances their sales. So when people complain that a company needs to get back to selling x, that is usually what they are doing by conveying an image of being a good corporate citizen within the community. I know I would rather buy a product from a decent person than some satchel of douchedom. Walmart buys lots of stuff from china, so I try to avoid them; Target kicks santa to the curb, so I try to avoid them as well. my fav campbells are the chunky chicken gumbo and the mexican tortilla. what does that make me politically? Lindsay Graham? the last secretary to pull in lots of power and publicity (that I recall) was hoover. Hoover took the credit for the roaring 20's, the late boom courtesy of his meddling, to become president. Coolidge wanted to fire his ass, but couldnt in large part due to his popularity. And we all know how much he helped in the long run. We are in a similar situation today in part because people, once again, forgot the basic lesson from "the ant & the grasshopper" tale. Didn't anyone read the ads? Everyone is talking Campbells, but the ads are for Swansons stock, a subsidiary of Campbells.
I read the ads, and was not offended in the slightest, and I am not the ghey. Some Master Chef in NYC uses Swansons to create his favorite dish? Awesome, show me to a empty table! A pair of Lesbians cook dinner for the kid and friends? Which brand of beer goes best with it, and what time should I show up? AFA is making much ado over nothing, IMHO. Of course, if you go to AFA's website and use their form letter generator to express your "outrage" to Campbells, you get put on the list to be hit up for donations for every "outrage" they find in the future. Business is business. Posted by: TXMarko at December 23, 2008 01:37 PM (yOLoW) 104

Faulty scripts are never a problem if you use FF and NoScript plugin. I use the flashblock as well, as users know, you just click a button to let them play. I was amazed how much "hidden" flash there is. I can open 20+ tabs in my "open all tabs" blogs folder and they load tout suite, never a script problem. You can temp allow a page if you need it to run with just one click. I highly recommend both. Too many webmasters are so full of themselves and junk up their sites with useless flummery *coughLGFcough* so these 2 plugins (plus Adblock and Adblock Plus Elements hider, with which you can even hide text ads) make surfing a pleasure again.
Recently I was on another comp and had to use IE and I could barely recognize some of the sites I see every day, due to all the crap the webmasters put on them.

In a perfect world, Malor's oath to buy Campbell's products would be as poorly considered as the AFA's call to boycott them. In our world, however, I'd have to side with Malor. When you're being disenfranchised by society, you have little choice but to support those who treat you as a full-fledged citizen. The Right needs to come to an accommodation with its gay adherents. They're not going anywhere, and they're not going to "be cured." Posted by: geoff at December 23, 2008 01:43 PM (dHLmN) 109

Last year I went on vacation in November and had Thanksgiving dinner at an upscale restaurant that used a formal white sauce with a little celery in the green bean casserole. It was quite tasty; certainly the best green bean casserole I have ever eaten. I would eat it again. Regardless of one's viewpoint, don't people find it a little creepy how every company has to demonstrate its political fealty and hipness nowadays ? Replace Hitler and Stalin with the Rainbow Coalition and Greenpeace and you could trot out all the old "Blood and Soil" and agitprop posters again. Campbell's would just put Uncle Joe right on the can to show the Party they were faithful to the cause. "Iron Joe's Hearty Beet & Water - now with bits of real kulak ! Keeps you goin' on those long cold days in the gulag while you Struggle for Progress !" They could still try Cuba. "October Suprise - Celebrate the Holiday with Maximum Portions of dog, rat and savory bits of old shoes !" Or "Cheddar Che's" Soup - great for dipping ! Eeevil corporations run the planet ? Puh-leeeeze. They are notorious lapdogs, curling up at the feet of whoever fills their dish and whacks them with a newspaper once in awhile. Americans used to take to the streets to protest whiskey taxes, not the right of teletubbies to carry whatever purse they like - "yeah, you tell 'em, sister !" Since you're still around: I've never actually read the Kama Sutra, or even parts of it. I think our (American) attitudes about Indians and sex is more: "Dude, they've got about a billion people. That's a lot of sex." And then we need an excuse as to why. And it's better to blame the Kama Sutra, then to think that yet another ethnic group kicks our manhood's ass (to mix physiological metaphors.) kackstraw - first off, i typed that intentionally. you might want to proofread your last post before criticizing others, btw. Like I stated in my first post, I dont like the militant homo types either, but agreed that this was looking for a problem where there wasnt one. As my wife did modelling as a teen and has d-cups, and we have a child, i think its rather unlikely I am gay. Didnt care about that. Because Im not a paranoid homophobe. But you called me a pedophile (the MJ comment), so you deserve whatever wrath I dish out.
So is a kackstraw something andy sullivan uses? nevermind, id rather be ignorant of such things. you two just keep it behind closed doors, so the rest of the country doesnt become a vomitorium. Posted by: A.G. at December 23, 2008 02:42 PM (UMulW) 158

Notropis,
Fertility rates were very high in India till mid-eighties. They have come down sharply since then. Reason? TV became widespread in India, and people suddenly had something else to do. If you want US population to grow, take away the TV, the DVR, the Playstation and the Internet. Most Indians have not heard about the Kama-Sutra. That doesn't mean that I don't agree with SarahW's comment above, but I don't think conservative gays are the problem, there. Posted by: geoff at December 23, 2008 02:49 PM (dHLmN) 164

This is true. It does appear that the companies who got rich, powerful, influential, and big on smart business and careful management are turning into a collective batch of retarded chimpanzees lately. It amazes me that the same guys who can build a little company into a multinational empire can be so very stupid about business in such a short time. I can only guess that the guys who got them there either died or were leveraged out and the ones who replaced them are great at interoffice politics but know less about business than a goldfish. Christopher, you pretty much hit the nail on the head. I just recently quit working at Office Depot as a tech sales guy. A few years ago the company was doing fairly well. Then the board brought in a new CEO on dow to district managers. They hired the guys who killed Autozone and are all surprised that stock plumeted from around $25 a share to $1.50 before our current 'great depression mk 2'. Dealing with corporate became life lessons in douchespeak 101. The most illuminating thing for me was this conference call we had about the remote tech services about 2-3 months before I quit. They were on like the 4th call bitching us out about why we werent' selling more of them, because the test market in Florida said we should have like a 3x higher attachment rate that we did. Turns out the prices for the same services in the test market were 1/2 what they were for the national market. I asked if anyone had heard of price elasticity of demand, and there was dead silence. It's bad when your low-level grunt knows more about economic policy and theory than your DM's and execs. Posted by: Ranba Ral at December 23, 2008 03:18 PM (fpk1J) 175

Allowing a group like AFA to taint the conservative cause by exaggerating the importance of a simple advertisement amounts to tacit acceptance of that unfairness. And in general, the GOP needs to be more aggressive in assuring that there is a place for all (or almost all) people who share conservative values. We're all tired of loud gay activists turning everything into a gay issue, and we're all concerned about them insisting that alternative sexuality be introduced into the classroom. But those aren't the people we're talking about. Conservative gays don't approve of the activists' behaviors, either. Posted by: geoff at December 23, 2008 04:34 PM (dHLmN) 194

I suspect that Campbells is betting that the number of people so massively offended by Campbell's daring to advertise Swanson's broth to and using gay people that they are ACTUALLY going to boycott (as opposed to talking about it) is a lot lower than the circulation of The Advocate (165,000?) and the pro-C/S backlash any such boycott would generate. I'm not an anti-gay advocate, but it just doesn't seem like boycotting Campbell's/Swanson would be a particularly effective way to combat homosexuality. Unless one is concerned that the anti-prop-8 protesters may have cornered the market on drama-hissy-fits, and feels the need to reclaim some of that drama for the other side of the aisle. It's not like they're going to turn around and say, "nope, gay people can't buy OUR soup!" Campbell still does Soup Labels for Education, btw. One of my favorite 'edifying' philosophast/writers is Allan Bloom. He was one of Leo Strauss's students, translator of Plato and Rousseau, friend of Saul Bellow's, and professor of philosophy at the University of Chicago. And Bloom was homosexual. But he didn't make a stink of it! He was classy about it. Where did the classiness go? I do recall, also, that he liked South Asian men... his boyfriend was Japanese, I believe... or Thai? I can't remember. It's all in Ravelstein... anyway... Bloom hated faggy behavior. Sure Bloom had his faults, of which Seth Bendardete and friends were aware of, but at least his attitude was spot-on. Your presumption of what is unfair is odd, to say the least. Presuming that discrimination is unfair is odd? You puzzle me, Christopher. Posted by: geoff at December 24, 2008 09:12 AM (dHLmN) 220
OK first off, yes, presuming discrimination is unfair is odd. Discrimination is not bad or wrong in its essence. When you read Ace of Spades HQ instead of Joe's Car Blog, you've discriminated. When you date Mary instead of Bob, you've discriminated. All discrimination means is "making a choice."
Thus, that's an odd statement to make. Discrimination only becomes wrong when it is unethical, harmful, or unlawful. You seem to be starting from the position that any disagreement with homosexuality or condemnation of homosexual activity is by definition wrong and bad. Yet you don't argue that or defend that position, you assume and assert it, then attack people who disagree. That's why I say it's odd. People shouldn't abandon their principles and integrity simply to be more popular and socially acceptable. Anyone who does is not to be trusted. Posted by: Christopher Taylor at December 24, 2008 02:00 PM (PQY7w) 221
Discrimination is not bad or wrong in its essence. Don't hide behind a lame semantic argument - Merriam Webster includes the definition I was using as well: 3 a: the act, practice, or an instance of discriminating categorically rather than individually b: prejudiced or prejudicial outlook, action, or treatment And it was quite clear from the context of my earlier comments that that was the definition I was using. Yet you don't argue that or defend that position, you assume and assert it, then attack people who disagree. Nobody has yet disagreed - one guy misinterpreted it, and all you've done is say "huh?" And I never attacked anyone for disagreeing - I criticized railwriter's attempt at patronizing me via math, but then I explained why I thought his comment had no bearing on my point. It wasn't until he decided to try his hand at the very tired genre of gay humor that I said anything critical of anybody. People shouldn't abandon their principles and integrity simply to be more popular and socially acceptable. And as I pointed out to railwriter, that's exactly the argument I'm not making. The argument is that it's difficult to reconcile secular conservative principles with the AFA's attitude. I further argued that it's time to come to an accomodation with conservative gays, rather than continuing to brush it under the carpet. So far, nobody has addressed either point.
