Obama: I'll Deal With the Deficit... Eventually

Nice position he finds himself in, eh?

A big-spending redistributionist liberal comes to office with a pretext to utterly ignore the deficit and spend, spend, spend -- to save the Republic itself.

This will not be Clinton II. Clinton had to worry about he deficit, and limit his ambitions accordingly. Especially as it was the central issue of the 1992 campaign.

And now? Not.

Prediction: The media will not be terribly troubled by Obama's huge deficits to quite the same degree they were bothered by Bush's relatively-smallish ones.

And in case icus or seattle want to say "But there was no crisis precipitating such deficits" --

Okay. No crisis whatsoever.

Of course, George W. Bush and his complacent "conservative" Congress did us no favors on this score. It'll be like that anti-pot commecial--

Father, finding his son's pot: "Where did you learn to smoke this?!"

Son: "I learned it from you! From you, Dad!"

2 What Obama really said:  "Sorry, I've been too busy picking my cabinet.  What's this deficit you speak of?  Do I have to do something about it?  Any deficit that occurs after January 20th is not the deficit I knew before January 20th.  I know what question you are going to ask next so don't ask it and waste your question."

3 Every time I hear some whiny ass lib complain about how the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are such horrible burdens on the economy I burst out laughing. Democrats and liberals didn't give a rat's ass about deficit spending or the national debt for over 50 years. Only when the Buuusssshhhhh administration upped defense spending did they start crying crocodile tears. Obama continues to show them as the hypocritical ass holes that they really are.

5 This is a double edged sword. It makes no difference whether the MSM let's him ignore it, he does it at his peril. Double digit inflation on the back end of this is a virtual certainty now. People are scared and cautious now but that can only last so long and eventually people will spend again, mostly wastefully. Only someone perceived as a prick, ala Reagan, will be allowed to do the tough stuff needed to check it. If I was Romney I would spend the next 4 years doing nothing but talking tough on the economy. People have put their buddy in charge because they want to like their President again but in the end they will be screaming for Daddy to fix things as usual.

If Obama wants to be relected he uses the recession to justify cutting federal workers and programs now  and reduce spending. Cutting the military won't be enough and is a dumb move anyway. The military is the most successful jobs program ever created.

Maybe I should give Dad a call , invite him over for a couple hits of this All American homegrown.. We're patriots, none of that imported crap.

9 Obama will spend money to stimulate the economy, and that will generate more tax revenue to pay for the spending.

It will also inflate the money supply, so that all they'll have to do is shift a few decimal places at the Mint and voila, no more deficit.  O'course, it will be $20,000 for a pizza, but the driver won't expect more than a couple of grand for a tip.

Actually, there was a crisis that percipitated deficit spending, 9/11.  Not only did America increase it's spending on the military and on other issues dealing with the WOT while virtually ever other western power shrank theirs, the percent of GDP spent on the military spiked significantly.  You can look it up.

Clinton "earned" his surplus by slashing the military, the intelligence agencies, etc.  He absolutely made this country less safe.  Bush reacted to 9/11 by spending massively to rebuild the military and the intelligence agencies, massive homeland security programs and oh yea, fighting two wars simultaneously.  That shit costs real money.

Just remember that Obama on the campaign had a smart-ass answer for everything. He had a plan for solving everyfuckingthing -- global warming, terrorism, the mortgage scandal, the outsourcing of jobs, creating jobs, and health care for everyone!

And he promised tax cuts for 95% of working people.

Obviously none of this is possible. We all know that a Democrat's solution to every problem is to throw taxpayer's money at it. And they only make the problems worse.

So Obama should be easily beaten in 2012 if the Republican can get their fucking act together.

Speaking of the post-9/11 response: Shame on the state and city of New York for not rebuilding those towers and squandering those billions of taxpayer's $$ given to them by the Bush.

Fuck you, New York. And fuck you, Republicans for not saying anything about it.

Heh. I remember back when I was a teenager hitting the bong and dropping acid on a regular basis. My friends and I thought if we only spiked our parents' drinks with LSD, they'd understand how great it was. We never did it, of course, because we didn't want to diminish our own stash.

Well, that and prison.

It's not that he promised all this shit that was the problem. Every politician does that. It's that the fucking media acted like, and still acts like, that he'll actually be able to solve the damn problems. What's scary is that I suspect most of them actually believe he will.

Time to cull the herd.

Defense-related spending played a part, but non-defense spending skyrocked too; congressional Republicans decided that massive spending increases were the ticket to re-election, and Bush couldn't seem to find his veto pen.  Increased in defense-related spending was only a small part of it.

23 I'm a moron, so I'm slow.

But I am starting to get a tiny inkling of just exactly why there was not a single solitary decent candidate for POTUS - in any party! - this election cycle.

No one wanted this POS economy, war, AGW, etc on his/her back for the next 4 years.

It's a no-win situation for any President. O'Boy is doomed to fail. Anyone would be.

That also explains why the Republicans (especially) seemed to put no effort into it at all. They tend to be more au courant of the economic situation than the feel-good Libs.

Duh.

Just the opposite, all we hear about is stimulus packages and bailouts. Why is there no talk about cutting government programs because of the shortfalls of tax revenue that is most certainly coming next year and beyond? Crazy.

Beat me to it.  There was a lot of horse trading (pay to playing) going on between Bush and the Congress.  In order to get votes for various parts of the WOT, Bush traded spending bills.  9/11 changed everything.

39 Also, in terms of GNP, the deficit was not particularly large under President Bush - what I mean is it was a big, gross, horrid number, but in relative terms to the wealth of the nation, it wasn't particularly large. It will be the way things are going though, and just when it was starting to shrink.

Obama wanted to be in office and the press wanted him to be there at this moment because times of hardship and crisis are when you can get away with extreme, radical stuff that you otherwise cannot. Combine that with a hard left congress and you've got a recipe for FDR II, but without the good parts of being a leader in time of war. Just the bad collectivist parts that made the depression worse and last longer.
