Report: Emanuel Spoke Directly to Blago About Senate Seat

For people with nothing to hide, they're sure hiding a lot.

President-elect Barack Obama's incoming chief of staff Rahm Emanuel had a deeper involvement in pressing for a U.S. Senate seat appointment than previously reported, the Sun-Times has learned. Emanuel had direct discussions about the seat with Gov. Blagojevich, who is is accused of trying to auction it to the highest bidder.

Emanuel talked with the governor in the days following the Nov. 4 election and pressed early on for the appointment of Valerie Jarrett to the post, sources with knowledge of the conversations told the Sun-Times. There was no indication from sources that Emanuel brokered a deal, however.

A source with the Obama camp strongly denied Emanuel spoke with the governor directly about the seat, saying Emanuel only spoke with Blagojevich once recently to say he was taking the chief of staff post.

But sources with knowledge of the investigation said Blagojevich told his aides about the calls with Emanuel and sometimes gave them directions afterward. Sources said that early on, Emanuel pushed for the appointment of Jarrett to the governor and his staff and asked that it be done by a certain date.

At least some of the conversations between Emanuel and Blagojevich were likely caught on tape, sources said.

As Jerry Seinfeld said of George Costanza: "Sometimes I get the feeling he's not being completely straight with me."

Note well the Obama camp insisting that they continue to be protected by the media -- the vigorous denials of an aid, trying to knock the story down.

Also note that, despite this report, it's mostly working. Mostly.

What's going on here? Either 1) Emanuel pitched various ideas of payoffs, possibly illegal, possibly legal but unethical and looking very bad,and they really do have something to hide, or 2) they have gone into "Deny Deny Deny" mode, trying to spin and obfuscate every single inch of a story, even when they've done nothing particularly blameworthy. They'd rather lie than take the minor political hit the truth would incur, and they have full confidence the media will carry their water for them.

Neither bodes well for the next four years.

1 So, see? I was right. There was no inappropriate contact with my staff.

Now fuck shove off, I have real work to do.

2 What!!?!!

The president elect's chief of staff may have spoken with the governor who was to fill the president elect's soon to be vacant senate seat?

Will the bombshells ever cease?

Posted by: seattle slough at December 19, 2008 01:59 PM (H5l9d)

3 So what does everyone think he's going to say at the presser? Will he announce his resignation? What could he possibly offer during this press conference other than to say he's resigning? He's already stated that he won't fill the senate seat.

Nope. Here's another one. They've been telling porkies. Oh, wait. That's actually not much of a bombshell.

Honestly, slough, noone sensible begrudges Obama or his staff with contact with Gov. Rod concerning Obama's replacement.

I think we do begrudge them the dishonesty about those contacts, however. OK, the alleged contacts.

Posted by: jdub at December 19, 2008 02:08 PM (t9pKb)

5 I mean we went from "I did not have any contact" to his Chief of Staff giving Blago a list of Senate replacements. I guess in obama's world "no contact" means that he didn't felate the guy.

6 They can bring all the truth and evidence they want to the surface but nothing will come of it. The MSM will continue to protect their Chosen One and anyone he deems worthy of that protection as well. Action will only be taken of OBetaMale decides they need to be sacrificed to save his sorry hide.

They were negotiating what the Senate seat for go for and were still trying to reach a deal when Blago was busted. Rambo, as chief of staff was negotiating on behalf of O'Bambi.

How are all of these distractions helping Michelle's kids?

It is abundantly clear that Senator Obama did absolutely nothing improper here, and if he did, its Bush's fault for being a warmongering rightwing ideologue.

Nice try.

Ok, I'm lying, that's a pathetic try. Lame even by your standards of practice, and that's saying a lot.

As has been stated, golly, even in the post, no reasonable person would be surprised or bothered that his Chief of Staff would have discussed Obama's successor with Blago. But if we all agree on that point, and we do Seattle, then why lie about it? Why dig your heels in and deny it instead of just saying "uh, you know, this is like, no big deal"? Cause it's not.

Unless something illegal were proposed. And even if something illegal were proposed, the brilliant Chief of Staff could have said "oh no, we don't play that game" and he's still golden.

It's really good that no one can accuse Democrats of being hypocrites, the same way some accuse Larry Craig of being a hypocrite when talking about family values.

It's cuz we know that assholes like Emanuel are slimy as all fuck and they revel in the little kick they get out of breaking the rules, they can't be hypocritical!

Because they can! It's so awesome!

slough, everyone expects that Emmanuel talked with Blagojevich about the Senate seat. After all, Blago and Rahm know each other pretty well - Emmanuel filled Blago's seat in the House when Blago was elected governor in 2002, and they live not far from each other. And it's perfectly natural for Obama to have lobbied for one his people to get the appointment.

There's nothing at all strange about that. What is strange is Obama's denial of any contact: that defies reason. Why would he say such a thing? What is he afraid of? Was Emmanuel in fact a bidder in Blago's auctioning of the seat? Blago's taped comments suggest that he wasn't; so again, why the denial? As ace pointed out, if denial of the obvious is Obama's instinctive reaction to possibly threatening situations, that does not bode well for the next four years.

You know, if I was this demonstrably stupid and impervious to context (you know, the one outlined explicitly by Ace, right at the very top of this page), I might be a little more reserved in the use of my sneering, condescending snark.

But that's just me. Damned self-respect and sensitivity to public humiliation have just held me back from a lifetime of non-stop self-satisfaction as a loud-and-proud "progressive".

23 Here, let me try something else:

As a lifelong liberal (I mean hate Chimpy McHitlerBurton and Sarah Palin is completely tacky) I am concerned that Barack Obama (he of the dreamy, soulful eyes) would seem to be obfuscating something totally NOT a crime. I KNOW that he completely absolved himself via his own attorney performing an audit and I totally buy that, but still, it feels icky.

Posted by: sears poncho at December 19, 2008 02:30 PM (uj/0b)

24 I think the President Elect is convinced he's a Jedi because the press keeps covering for him.

29 What gets me is that it would be stupid, unprecedented, and illogical for Obama to not talk to the governor about his replacement. Why on earth wouldn't he? The immediate statement to the contrary was like someone claiming they didn't get up that morning. Uh, you're standing right here and not in bed.

It makes you think they're either insane, have something to hide, or just reflexively lie (possibly see first choice) as a response to anything that might be damaging. None of those are very good choices.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at December 19, 2008 02:45 PM (PQY7w)

30 But Obama juts his chin and gazes at the sky so soulfully!

He sees our future and cares for us. Really, really cares for us like a good father.

I mean, a really, really , really good father. Not the kind of father who makes you feel bad when he catches me fellating the dog.....You , I mean, catches you fellating the dog.

Q: Have you had any conversations with the Governor or his staff on a replacement for the IL Senate seat vacated by President-Elect Barack Obama?

A: Ayyeha lowww is whoaaa in da hitherto fore.

Hey, is Rahm still a Congressman? Funny that he hasn't vacated that seat yet. It's not like he has a confirmation hearing ahead him as Chief of Staff to POTUS.

The latest from the Chicago Swamp Drainer:

“This is not the way it’s supposed to work!” mayor Richard Daley exclaimed today, holding aloft his new book ‘Schemes of my Father.’ “It is getting hard to tell the bad guys from the really bad guys.”

The mayor’s lament came amid more City turmoil as prominent figures leapfrogged each other to become FBI informants. “I was an FBI informant before it was cool”, said Jessie Jackson Jr., AKA candidate number 5. “He was getting ready to,” said Mr. Obama about Mr. Emanuel: “but there is no question that he aided the FBI by helping the Governor think impure thoughts.”

“Its like rats jumping from a sinking ship,” an FBI guy explained: “All the good mob lawyers are taken. Once we add these new guys to Kelly and Rezko, there will be more singing down there than the Vienna Boys Choir.” Meanwhile, Governor Blago had no comment as strings of would be FBI informants trailed behind him as if following a line of chum.

“The union is not mafia.” Jimmy Hoffa added from an undisclosed location: “Any similarity is purely coincidental. I don’t care how much money he got, it was not for no damn job. We got standards Blago.”

All agreed however, that despite the intertwined machine, union and mafia reputation of the City, nothing untoward could attach to President-elect Obama. “This will be the most ethical administration in history,” stated Attorney General nominee Eric Holder, reviewing a mounting stack of pardon requests: “You can tell by the large number of FBI informants that surround him.”

“Sammy the Bull” Gravano could not be reached for comment.

What we are seeing is only the tip of the iceberg, as anyone who has done any research into Obama knows. There is a reason why he is so intent in hiding everything he can about himself.

My guess is that he does not have four years, I am going to guess he will be forced to resign before that. If he were smart he would not cop a 'tude with his MSM choir, some of them might get pissed at being dissed and start digging. They won't have to dig very far as we all know.
