We all saw this coming, though i had hoped they'd be smart enough not to blatantly steal it. Reid not involved in this one for a change. Just a crooked SoS in Minn. along with some "help" from sympathetic to Dems court and election board counters. I hope there are several real investigations into this outright fraud and they turn up all the skeletons and then some. On the other hand, can't think of a worse punishment for Dems on the hill than having the Franken albatross around their neck. It won't take long before he does and says something monumentally ignorate and stupid that can't be hidden or spinned Posted by: FUAF at December 19, 2008 11:55 AM (wKdrm) 10

Get a grip! It's clear that MN doesn't really give a shit who their next Senator is, since the vote is so even. This kind of counting and recounting is corrosive to faith in democracy.
Here's how it should be done instead:if the vote falls within a certain percentage margin, the two candidates fight a gladiatorial deathmatch on pay-per-view, and the survivor gts the office. Posted by: Jeffrey Quick at December 19, 2008 11:58 AM (arMF4) 12

How it finally ends up, I don't know. But this lead is because they're examining Franken's challenge pile first. Then they'll examine Coleman's challenge pile next. So until both are done, this temporary lead is meaningless.

Caroline Kennedy & Al Franken?!?
This is the best the Democratic Party can bring to table? And the Republicans can't beat Franken? However, I'm sure the Republicans are licking their lips in anticipation of smacking both of these lightweight n00bs around. Sometimes this democracy thing confounds me... Posted by: Che Pizza at December 19, 2008 12:09 PM (RLBRw) 27
I know I risk getting torched for this, but I think it is entirely possible that Franken really, legitimately won given the rules in place. What kills Coleman is that canvassing people are allowed to make a best guess as to voter intent. There are thousands upon thousands of fucked up looking ballots out there. If you decide to follow the hard line and DQ all the fucked up looking ballots, Coleman wins in a walk. But any effort to interpret voter intent will invariably favor the left. While the Dems like to boast about how all the brainy PhDs vote Dem, they are less likely to acknowledge another truth... the left side of the bell-curve also votes Democrat by a wide margin. Therefore, I am not surprised that most of your fucked up ballots probably came from Democrats, and any effort to devine voter intent will favor them accordingly.
What can Coleman do about it now? Probably nothing. Why can't the Republicans discuss the fact theat Dems are more likely to offer up a fucked up ballot? Because it serves no purpose, and any attempt will quickly be interpreted by the press and the left (redundant, I know) to be a slur against minorities. As for the other oddities, like the double counted 133 ballots, that's on Coleman and his lawyers to stop. Coleman's best hope is that the vast majority Franken's challenges were just downright silly, trying to temporarilly limit the number of votes in Coleman's column. Given that clown and his people, it wouldn't surprise me. I still hold out hope, but I'm worried. Posted by: bunny boy at December 19, 2008 12:09 PM (YsSn7) 28

I'm sick of this whole thing. Franken is a nitemare and a disaster. Screw it, let him be the nitemare and headache for Dems on the hill. They are probably rooting for Coleman at this point so they aren't stuck with this brainlesss idiot that will sabatoge them just by opening his mouth. Dems don't even have "essence of cover" anymore. There is no way they can spin blame and have the majority of the public buy it.

"You sound like the disgruntled liberals after Bush won in 2000 and 2004." There is a huge difference considering Bush was never behind in Florida in 2000 or in 2004 in any state that mattered. Very big difference when they recount 20 freakin times and every recount turns up new votes in overwhelming numbers for the loser until miraculously the "last" recount he wins. Posted by: Mr. Pink at December 19, 2008 12:11 PM (ZpELM) 32
I can't believe the democrats are allowed to get away with openly cheating. They do this in every close election and always win. Florida 2000 is the only exception. Posted by: t.ferg at December 19, 2008 12:11 PM (2YVh7) 33

I know he's not a real conservative but neither are the people of MN. So what exactly did he do to offend the people and open the door to this guy to take the election? Was there some bridge to nowhere he didn't vote for or something?

I told everyone before, This is Minnasota. The DFL has already gotten the confirmed vote of all the dead of the state for the past 250 years they will continue finding (feeding) them in as necessary to ensure victory. They own the state government, the judges, and the media. They have enough friends (fellow Democrats) in Washington to ensure that there will be no (or a very tightly controlled)federal investigation. The people here are so used to the corruption (similar to Illinois) that they don't see any problem and don't understand the big deal. It's the way it has always been. Never confuse Democrats with facts, they will manufacture their own when needed. Posted by: Magic at December 19, 2008 12:25 PM (WGcw3) 45

Is it just me, or has Ed Morrissey bent over for the entire Democrat machine? He just argued on his show that whoever wins after this ridiculous recount, it will be perfectly acceptable... because that is just the process. Well. If Coleman wins, the endless meme will be "Coleman STOLE the elections." If Smalley wins, it will be "Democracy prevails in Minnesota." I would like to know why Morrissey seems so satisfied with the process as it is. This process of guessing voter intent from mangled ballots is profoundly undemocratic. I would have thought a pundit like Ed would care to make a stand against this absurd process, especially given that he's talking about his new Senator... but everything is just fine, in Hot Air world. Enjoy your senator Smalley, Minnesota.
The real story here is the enormous failure of the recount process. If Smalley wins by dint of scrutinizing ballots scrawled with crayon, divined in the manner of Johnny Carson's Carnac, then the winner of that election is not legitimate as far as I'm concerned. If all the questionable ballots were discarded, Coleman had the lead. That is the only legit, fair process. If you can't fill out a ballot, don't expect the rest of us to respect your vote. I keep expecting serious opposition to our new overlords from our old web pals, and I see them caving in on all sides. Posted by: George Orwell at December 19, 2008 12:38 PM (AZGON) 50

Proposed voter instructions:
If you can't fill out a ballot correctly, your ballot can't be counted. Seriously, don't fuck this up; this is your only opportunity to vote in this election. Check for hanging chads, extraneous markings, and identifying marks before dropping your ballot in a ballot box. If any of that shit is on your ballot, it won't be counted, and that will be YOUR fault alone. We are not going to play kindergarten psychologist and try to figure out what you wanted to do. Mark the ballot to indicate your choice. Make sure the ballot is marked accurately and completely. Don't put any stray marks on the ballot. If you make a mistake, request a new ballot and then follow these same directions once again. Reiterated for your complete understanding: DON'T FUCK THIS UP.
