| Claim: Informant Says Blago Ran Illegal Gambling Operation in the 70sThe Chicago Way, part sixty eight: The ABC7 I-Team has learned that an attorney who went undercover for the FBI in the late 1980's says he told federal authorities years ago about wrongdoing by Blagojevich. His name is Robert Cooley. Cooley was a criminal defense lawyer in Chicago in the late 1980's who became one of the most potent witnesses against Chicago corruption, testifying for federal prosecutors in cases that resulted in dozens of convictions. Cooley says that before Rod Blagojevich got into politics he was a bookmaker on the North Side who regularly paid the Chicago mob to operate. ... He told ABC7 that Mr. Blagojevich regularly paid a so-called street tax to Robert "Bobby the Boxer" Abbinanti, a convicted outfit gambling collector. In the early 1980's, Abbinanti was working for convicted West Side mob boss Marco D'amico. Bookies pay street taxes to the crime syndicate in exchange for being allowed to operate such a racket. "I predicted five years ago when he ran the first time that he was a hands on person who would be selling every position in the state of Illinois and that it exactly what happened," said Cooley. So, here's another thing about Obama's political culture we didn't know. On the other hand, we know that Sarah Palin once indulged and African priest who blessed her against witchcraft and that the Mat-Su Valley has a high incidence of methampthetamine use. PS, Obama was asked a bit about the Blago case today. He responded "Don't waste your question" and expressed his preference to not answer. Which he's done before. He tells the press "I'd rather not talk about that" and they say "Okay, seems fair." Um, yeah. Hard-news men, never afraid to go where a hot story might take them. Meanwhile, no one bothered to ask if he ran Blago's 2002 campaign. One of those things Mike Barnicle instructs us is unnecessary to ask about, because his "instinct" has already told him the answer. The AP doing its job to prove that only Blago is a dirty politician.
CHICAGO – Shortly after his 2002 election, Gov. Rod Blagojevich told Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. he didn't appoint the congressman's wife as lottery director because he had refused him a $25,000 campaign donation, a person familiar with the conversation told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "Blagojevich went out of his way to say, 'You know I was considering your wife for the lottery job and the $25,000 you didn't give me? That's why she's not getting the job,'" the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing federal investigation. So JJ Jr. wouldn't give Blago $25,000 for a job for his wife but would have his fundraisers come up with a million dollars to get Barry's senate seat? It's nice that Barry let the reporter know that "he hasn't confirmed his paper's story yet". If news outlets don't get confirmation from the messiah will that mean they aren't true?
This is change we can believe in. Barry's attorney can clear him of any wrong doing and Barry has to confirm stories first. It's was also nice to see members of Pravda looking aghast at the one guy in the room doing his job. Posted by: TheQuietMan at December 16, 2008 09:23 PM (YJsgl) 8

Bob Cooley is a helluva interesting story. You'd get a pretty good read if you pick up When Corruption Was King. Now if this true, the timing suggests Hot Rod was running his book and paying street tax while working as an Assistant Cook County States Attorney. That's some old skool corruption there.

Mr. Obama did not run the Governor’s campaign and if he did he has forgotten it.
Mr. Obama had no inappropriate contact with “Bobby the Boxer”, “Marco ‘Friendly’ D’amico, “Bennie the fixer”, “Tony Pro Rezko”, George “Buggs” Moran, Christopher Kelly (no relation to “Machine Gun” Kelly), Al Capone or Jimmy Hoffa. Some of these men lived in the neighborhood and they knew each other only through their kids in school and a shared interest in education reform.
A source close to Consigliore Emanuel said that Rahm has been asked by the FBI not to speak about this until any charges have been finalized: “Plus,” the source said: “a man named Vinnie came by and tied his tongue to his liver.”

Speaking of lying Democrap bullshit. Here is the massive new tax increase in New York State. It seems that once again the budget was in the red due to “the bad economy” and they had a shortfall. Did they rein in spending? Of course not, that is not the Democrap way. You can tell the “news” article was actually written by the Democraps because of the spin.
State spending only INCREASED by 1% in the budget; the smallest increase in years. Hahahahahaha. Normal people when they face a budget shortfall decrease spending until the budget matches.
This is the way Democrap States do it. Every time the economy goes South they increase taxes to make up for it. When the economy recovers and they then have a budget surplus from all the tax increases do they then lower taxes??? Hahahahaha They just increase spending and wait for the next cycle so they can raise taxes again. Posted by: Vic at December 17, 2008 08:21 AM (q8aAJ) 79

For fifty years people have been leaving Detroit. This accelerated after the riots in the 60's and forced school busing. After each wave of lost people, property values would go down and the city would raise taxes. Property tax, income tax, hotel tax, you name it tax.
The death spiral continues: the more people leave, the less property values are and the more they raise taxes. Detroit taxes are the highest in Michigan and among the highest anywhere. Property tax is now so high, you have to get a tax abatement in order to build anything new - a cause of more scandal. A newspaper once calculated that if Mr. Illich built a new arena for his Red Wings without a tax break, he would pay $ 40 million a year in property tax. Michigan Governor Granholm is exporting the Detroit system to the State. In each of the seven years of her Michigan recession, the State budget has gone up while we hear about all the "cuts." Taxes go up almost every year. So we can give away hundreds of millions to Hollywood buddies to make movies and legislate higher energy costs through a 10% green electricity mandate. Beware, Granholm gets her inspiration from Detroit and New York, and Obama gets advice on economics and energy from Granholm. Posted by: Robert at December 17, 2008 09:12 AM (VotgB) 82

I'm gonna start using that approach: "FJ, why didn't you do your work assignments?"
"Oh, boss, I don't want you to waste your question. Ask me something else." Posted by: Farmer Joe at December 17, 2008 10:37 AM (z4es9) 89
I seem to remember someone on one of the major parties' tickets who had a reputation as a reformer, who had actually cleaned up corruption (mainly in her own party). But we were told that she was unacceptable because of her clothes or that she had kids or that one of those kids was pregnant. Oh, and because she didn't kill that damn baby of hers.
Now we have the Don and his kappos. Looks like the consigliere is already in a bit of a pickel. This would be funny if it were not so pathetic. Posted by: nikkolai at December 17, 2008 10:39 AM (+RLn7) 90

Yeah, corrupt Chicago was kinda ok when it was just Illinois. Now
people are going to be surprised when they follow the trail of dead
hookers to the white house.
Nah...it will be a line of Bolivian cocaine that will lead you to the White House... Posted by: Buck Naked - Pron Star at December 17, 2008 11:04 AM (oufwF) 92
Gee, I mean it would be useless to ask Obama if he was even involved in either the 2002 or 2006 Blago campaigns, cause Fitzpatrick must have told Obama or someone in the Pres elect's team, or someone who knows someone who knows someone in the Pres elect's team, not to say anything about Blago, or Chicago, or the United States of America, or the bailout, or anything else that might be of interest to reporters for the next eight years.

PS That's not the Chicago Trib reporter I thought I knew!

So JJ Jr. wouldn't give Blago $25,000 for a job for his wife but would have his fundraisers come up with a million dollars to get Barry's senate seat? Not only is he in potential legal trouble for the Senate fiasco but he is also going to be spending the next few months sleeping in his car. Can we call him "The Magic 8-Ball" president?
"Reply hazy, try again later." but change it to "Question unacceptable, try again later." Yes, yes, I know.... raaaaacist. Posted by: sm at December 17, 2008 12:56 PM (gUKfo) 96
Hey, I was born in Chicago and lived there for more than thirty years. I blame the voters because too many of them are okay with the corruption. In fact, lots of them think it's a sign of their sophistication that they manage to live in a corrupt city.
Also, every last one of them voted for Obama because they think he's Jesus. There are two types of Chicagoans: 1. The elites in Lincoln Park and the Gold Coast believe that corruption is what makes Chicago amusing. Many of the people who participate it in city gov't came from working class, white ethnic backgrounds (Blago is a perfect example), so it's really a class thing in this case. They laugh at their social inferiors and then go back to discussing their 60s radical experience with fellow wealthy WASP, Bill Ayers. 2. The minorities and few remaining working class whites who rely on the Dem. machine for city services and vote party line for the same reason that the poor immigrants in NYC at the turn of the century voted for the Dem. machine there. (As an interesting corollary, the WASPy crowd views Obama as one of their own which is why they are all convinced that he isn't mixed up with the machine).
