Bush Visits Iraq UPDATE: More On Bush's Reaction To The Shoes

This is probably as close to a victory celebration as the President is likely to get.

Slipping out of the White House over the weekend, Bush flew secretly to the Iraqi capital to hold talks with Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and address a rally of U.S. troops.

"Bush has come to meet Iraqi leaders, thank the troops and celebrate the new security agreement," a White House official said.

Bush arrived first by helicopter at the presidential palace for talks with President Jalal Talabani and his two vice-presidents. He planned to meet later with Maliki.

Bush's trip -- his fourth to Iraq since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion -- follows approval of a security pact between Washington and Baghdad last month that paves the way for U.S. forces to withdraw by the end of 2011.

Unlike previous visits which were so secret that there were no official welcoming ceremonies, this time there were.

bush _iraq.jpg

Sadly, the host of the Iraqi version of Countdown was on hand and tried to attack the President.

The president's appearance was interrupted by a man, apparently a journalist, who leapt to his feet and threw his shoe at the president, who ducked and thus narrowly missed being struck. Chaos ensued. The [man] threw a second shoe, which also narrowly missed the president.

...
The president was at no point injured and he brushed off the incident. "All I can report is it is a size 10."

The pool's Iraqi colleague said the man shouted, "This is a farewell kiss, dog."

Apparently the man and his family were arrested, his wife raped in front of him and then the entire family was thrown screaming into a wood chipper. Oh sorry, that's what would have happened if this brave Iraqi patriot had tried this during Saddam's reign.

No one likes to have their country invaded and patrolled by a foreign military, even if it's for a their own long term good but maybe this guy should think about why he suddenly is so courageous and who made that possible.

Meantime, no doubt many on the left are cheering this asshat. The world turned upside down my friends.

UPDATE: Gee, I wonder why this part was left out of the earlier reports:

Some Iraqi journalists stood up to apologise.

The White House said Bush ducked to avoid the first shoe, while the second narrowly missed the president.

Bush said: "Thanks for apologising on behalf of the Iraqi people. It doesn't bother me. If you want the facts, it was a size 10 shoe that he threw".

Playing down the incident, the president later added: "I don't know what the guy's cause is... I didn't feel the least bit threatened by it."

This is the the second classiest way for Bush to have handled it. The classiest way? Bush pulls a dagger out of his waistband and flings directly into the guy's heart and shoe chucker is dead before he hits the ground (which incidentally is exactly how Dick Cheney would have handled it).

That's right near about the ultimate in cool. For all Bush knew, it was a hand grenade or something similar. You got to be seriously on edge when you're the US President and you're in Iraq; but when you watch the video, he just ducked 'em and went on.

I'm guessing Obama's reaction would have been somewhat different.

And I'm thinking some Secret Service guy is being reassigned for letting the asshat get the second shoe off, and for not intercepting it mid-air.

Bush reacted well.  I felt sorry for him.  A big lese majeste that might end up being the definitive finale for him.  I think Bush meant well, but entrusted his administration to the Good (Powell), the Bad (Cheney, with Rumsfeld) and the Ugly (Rove).  Unfortunately, the Bad and the Ugly won out most of the time, or at least until 2006.

I can understand the Iraqi's point of view, too, having seen how inept the US was in Iraq for a long time.  Maybe he was pissed off about Nisoor Square, or some other incident.  If you're related to someone that died because of the USA's action or inaction, saying "it was worse under Saddam" doesn't cut it.

Kudos to my president for handling it as well as he did.  I've had my share of differences with President Bush, but when it came to the single most important task a president has, national security, I think he did a fine job (except for Iran). No terror attacks on US soil since 9/11 AND 50 milliion people liberated from bloodthirsty dictatorships.  The victory in Iraq is very much HIS victory, since almost alone he had the will and fortitute to see it through.

Iraq is free, the people have a fighting chance for democracy, Saddam will never terrorize another innocent, Iraq will not support or be a base for terror groups - yes, we won. Let's see if the Messiah can do as well.  As for the shoe-toss, well, it's just proof Iraq has their fair share of fools as well as we do.

Enjoy your victory lap, Mr. President and God Bless You.

I can understand the Iraqi's point of view, too, having seen how inept the US was in Iraq for a long time.

Apparently this guy was a Sadr sympathizer.  Maybe there was something else to it, but you don't know that and have no reason to believe it yet.  At the moment, it comes down to whether or not you support Sadr sympathizers throwing shoes at the guy who's helped stopped them from terrorizing the populace.

I don't.

Maybe he was pissed off about Nisoor Square, or some other incident.  If you're related to someone that died because of the USA's action or inaction, saying "it was worse under Saddam" doesn't cut it.

This weakness was thought to be counteracted by its rapid fire one two throw weight. Janes Defense Weekly has known of this Iranian threat for some time and, obviously President Bush was advised of current US counter-measures.

. . . which is why I'm sure you would have felt equally sympathetic to a Serbian/Bosnian/Croatian/Albanian/Somalian/Chinese embassy worker throwing his shoes of Clinton.

Yes, I would have.  I remember McCain saying in 2000 that the way the bombing of Serbia was done was "immoral," because it was done at too high an altitude to distinguish between civilians and military targets.    I agreed with him.

Of course no where near as many innocent civilians died in those actions you mention as in Iraq.   And the Iraqis still don't have electricity.

Hey, nobody got hurt, and as I said, Bush handled it well.

Well- kudos to you icus for consistency.

I didn't and don't agree.  Nowhere near as many innocents died . . . of course - you're also talking about a much smaller population vs. Iraq and nowhere near as many people died (total) in the Balkan genocide as died during Saddam Hussein's rampages over the years.

As an aside, I really don't see how you justify any of the wars to stop dictators and genocide if you think our actions were too high a price to pay for the bombing of Serbia.  Compared to what?  WWII?  Korea?  What's acceptable if that's unacceptable?

I really don't see how you justify any of the wars to stop dictators and genocide if you think our actions were too high a price to pay for the bombing of Serbia.  Compared to what?  WWII?  Korea?  What's acceptable if that's unacceptable?

First, do you remember from 5th grade history that Tojo, Hitler and Mussolini declared war on the USA?  In Tojo's case, very emphatically.  Those were states that openly stated they wanted world domination.

Stalin and Mao also demonstrated they represented a threat to the security to the USA.

It's hard to argue that Milosevic and Saddam Hussein were a threat to the security of the USA.

Every military commitment has a risk and cost/reward ratio.  I'm not opposed to action if the the risk and cost is low and reward is high, or when the security of the USA is at stake.

But if you want to have some global constabulary fighting "dictators" and "genocide," or turn the US military into such a constabulary, you better be in favor of a huge draft and a  militarized state, or a global government.  There are a lot of "dictators," and lots of "genocide."  Yeah, let's overthrow all the "dictators," including our friends in Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Turkmenistan, and Ethiopia, and stop all the "genocide," in Congo and Darfur.  OK, go for it.

As an aside, Al-Maliki once again proved he has balls of steel in the video, trying to catch the shoe.  It's like when he didn't flinch during that mortar attack during the Ban Ki-Moon press conference last year.

Uh, icus, yeah - I also think war would have been justified with them prior to them declaring war on us.

Do you think that or don't you?

Because we're justified in doing something doesn't mean it's required.

If I stop a mugging, I'm not a dick for not having stopped a bank robbery.  I'm not going to argue to somebody they're wrong in stopping a murder because they haven't invested the time, money, and risk in catching a dangerous serial killer.

Maybe we should do more.  Maybe we're hypocrites (unlike the Europeans who are consistent in always sitting around and not helping anybody).  But because we can't save everybody doesn't mean I'm going to have a problem with not stopping the a dictator once in a while.  I'll be a lazy, greedy hypocrite who works up enough effort to support fighting evil vs. the option of letting myself not be troubled by inconsistency at night when I'm letting everybody fry equally.

143 I am really amazed and saddened by the division in this country. It is no surprise that the whole world blames US for all evil in the world when we have an abiding media and a growing number of people in our own country who would waste no time in blaming USA first. A house divided is seen as weak and vulnerable. Our own media would take every opportunity or create if there are not enough, to downplay this great nation and make it a mockery for the rest of the world. I am an immigrant from India and I have always admired this country for the freedoms and opportunities it has to offer. There is no other nation for which people are willing to stand in long lines in the blistering heat outside embassies to get a chance to enter this nation, some are even willing to die crossing the border to somehow make it to the land of opportunities.
Around the world and at every corner, nations are in an eternal chaos and have their own internal battles and demons to fight. Take India for example, we are engaged in an unrelenting war with radical jihadism, and we were recently attacked by this fanatic cult. Indians were anguished and angry and wanted to retaliate like America, but our spineless leaders came out and condemned the attacks and gave only speeches. In the last two years alone, there have over 5000 ppl killed in bombings and suicide attacks in India, but the leaders of india wanted a peaceful resolution reflecting the sensibilities and resolve of that L****** "mahatma" gandhi. what did we acheive, more bombings, attack on our congress, massacre in mumbai, and more to follow. Peace is only possible with peaceful people not with someone who are itching to exterminate you.
Bush may be a lot of things, but he had the courage to stand up to this growing and imminent threat and had the resolve to not back down even when the political winds reversed course and slapped him in the face at every turn. Bush has the necessary attributes that Indians only wish there leaders could have. For a better grip on reality and a grasp on the breadth of threat of radical Islam awaiting the shores of this country, ask an Indian or an Israeli.
I hope this country is prepared under infantile Obama to take this threat head on.

Brian is a perfect example of what I hate about the modern American liberal. They have no understanding of human nature coupled with a complete navel-gazing narcissm that impedes them from comprehending any course of action that does not inflate their own narrow egos.

Take a look at his quote. He has the word liberation in quotes, leading us to believe that he thinks the word liberation does not apply to the Iraq situation.  Was Iraq better off before the invasion or after? Let's evaluate that for a second here. Pre war- Saddam Hussein killing hundreds of thousands of Iraqis. After the war- peace and prosperity. By any reckoning, Iraq is better off, even if the Iraqis nor the typical idiot American leftist does not want to see it. Conclusion- Brian is an idiot.

Also, he is along with his many leftist idiot buddies incapable of understanding one simple fact. It makes no difference what the pretext for invading Iraq was. The invasion of Iraq allowed us to do the one thing we needed to do, which was kill as many of the jihadist terrorist types as we could. In fact, the more the merrier.

I finally got to see the video of the show bomb and thrower and I said, that was pretty good ducking. But then this morning I read the eye witness accounts which said the thrower was only 12 feet away. Folks, that is not as wide as my living room and is almost on top of him. You don’t get that from the video as the camera makes the room seem bigger. I’ll have to admit that I could not have dodges that shoe from a throw that close and Bush is older than I am.

Also, if you look at what the liberals are saying about the incident, even the ones who are not making it a “justifiable act of retribution” it is insanely stupid.  Somehow they are equating this with “freedom of speech”.  It just shows you how stupid these moonbats are and how fucking little they understand the Constitution.

So I offer this for the moonbats reading this blog; throwing a shoe at someone giving a press conference or a speech is not freedom of speech. Neither is heckling someone under similar circumstances. This was an example of assault under most U.S. law. If he had actually hit the president it would have been assault and battery. If it had actually caused damage it would have rapidly escalated in seriousness of a charge.

And finally, if what is posted on Michelle Malkin’s site via the link above is true, this guy is NOT a journalist, he is a terrorist sympathizer and should NEVER have been allowed at this event. Heads should roll for that.

BTW, Louise, not that you care, but the Air National Guard was the only Guard branch of service that was liable to serve in Vietnam. So Bush had the same chance of serving in combat over Vietnam as any other Vietnam Era draftee or volunteer. And unlike the middle class NG volunteer serving with e.g. engineering units driving snowplows (that's the NG draft dodging that you're thinking of, BTW), Bush's training and regular service in out-of-date fighters was dangerous in itself. At least two pilots in his unit died in crashes. (It might have been three, but I can't recall exactly, but it was at least two.)
