Report: Rahm Emanuel Was the Go-Between on Senate Seat Talks

Video report.

Earlier spin had Rahm Emanuel heroically calling Patrick Fitzgerald to blow the whistle on Blago's pay-for-play grasping.

If that's so, why is Emanuel hiding behind his kids to avoid answering questions?

Gag order requested by Fitzgerald? I don't think so. If that were the case, one would imagine that Fitzgerald would have given him the go-ahead to deliver a brief statement noting that he'd cooperated with the prosecutor but was now requested to remain silent about it, this being an active investigation and all.

Instead Emanuel is dodging questions like he has something to hide. If Emanuel were really the White Knight dime-dropper the earlier spin claimed he was, why would the prosecutor continue letting him twist in the wind looking all guilty 'n shit?

A middle possibility is that Team Obama ultimately decided to drop dime or at least refuse Blago's demands, but earlier explored the notion of playing ball... and if that's the case, it would explain why they don't want to answer any questions -- answering one leads to another, and another, until finally we get to the questions that make them look very bad.

The Tribune reports that businessmen planned a big fundraiser for Blago late in the campaign.

As Gov. Rod Blagojevich was trying to pick Illinois’ next U.S. senator, businessmen with ties to both the governor and U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. discussed raising at least $1 million for Blagojevich’s campaign as a way to encourage him to pick Jackson for the job, the Tribune has learned.

...

Two businessmen who attended the meeting and spoke to the Tribune on the condition of anonymity said that Nayak and Blagojevich aide Rajinder Bedi privately told many of the more than two dozen attendees the fundraising effort was aimed at supporting Jackson’s bid for the Senate.

...

That meeting led to a Blagojevich fundraiser Saturday in Elmhurst, co-sponsored by Nayak and attended by Jesse Jackson Jr.’s brother, Jonathan, as well as Blagojevich, according to several people who were there. Nayak and Jonathan Jackson go back years and the two even went into business together years ago as part of a land purchase on the South Side.

The crime of conspiracy requires an agreement to participate in a crime plus an overt step in furtherance of that conspiracy -- just yapping about doing a crime isn't enough. But actually going through with the fundraiser corruptly agreed upon? Conspiracy.

Jesse Jackson, Jr.'s brother, Jonathan, attended. Are we to believe that none of this was worked out with JJJr? Or Jesse Jackson Sr. for that matter?

I'm a little baffled how it can be that this much is known about the Jackson Family's involvement in the conspiracy and yet not a one of them has apparently received a letter putting them on notice that they're targets of an investigation. Is Fitzgerald afraid of the political fall-out in going after the Jackson mob? Apparently so.

Why Is the AG Asking the Illinois Supreme Court to Strip Blago of His Powers? This was noted earlier.

But why would the AG do this? Impeachment is the job of the legislature, not the courts.

Is it a speed thing? I doubt it. An impeachment can happen quickly, if so desired.

To toss out a possibility -- the legislature would prefer having someone else do this on their behalf, because too many of them fear what secrets Blago might let leak about them in retaliation. If it's just the AG and the Supreme Court -- hey, Blago, you know we were really on your side all along... Please don't mention the thing with the guy at the place. You know what I'm talkin' about.

John Kass: Blago isn't crazy. He's just a standard machine politician. This is the Chicago Way.

Kass notes that everyone from Daley to Obama is talking quietly about Blago because they don't want to piss him off -- and get him talking about their own corruption.

Thanks to CJ for that.

1 Yes, you are to believe that JJJR had nothing to do with this. And Rod B was the only person on the call. There were no other parties to Blag's corrupt attempt to sell the Senate seat. Just Blag. No bidders.

Barack Obama "roasts" Rahm Emmanuel at a Cure for Epilepsy event in 2005.

It's a seven minute segment and the humor, as such, starts off at around the 2:30 mark. At 3:30 Barack highlights the ethics of Chicago politics.

Lots of humor, as such, about what a profane, vicious jack-ass Rahm is.

The Republicans MUST take a page out of the Democrats playbook and demand that Rahm Emanuel resign from Obama's cabinet.

Republicans need to take advantage of this and hammer the Democrats with it as much as they can.

19 Bart -- Rahm didn't say who issued him death threats. Apparently, in his anger over being hounded by reporters, he told a cameraman who he let inside his home to use the bathroom, that he was disgusted with the media and that he was receiving death threats.

"As chief of staff for President-elect Barack Obama, he's usually at Obama's news conferences, standing off to the side, glowering like some fiercely loyal mini-me.

"But Emanuel wasn't there Thursday when Obama faced reporters to answer questions about federal charges against Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D-Dead Meat), accused of trying to sell Obama's Senate

I think they do not want the legislator getting involved here because it opens the door for a Republican to get that seat. They want a cool removal from office with no “bipartisan” involvement.

Anyone with any common sense knows that everyone involved in  this is dirty. One can not be involved with bribery and conspiracy by one’s self.

34 CJ?

As a background to what Kass wrote, the real power in Chicago politics is NOT the alderman.  It is the ward committeemen.  Of course sometimes, they are the same.

The alderman are there only to rubber-stamp Da Mare's bills through the city council.  The ward committeeman is the guy that hands out the patronage jobs and makes sure the garbage gets picked up.  Nothing happens in any election--including for the state legislature--without the ward committeeman's approval.

I admit I don't keep up with news like I should, so please excuse my ignorance.  Is Rahm Emanuel black?  I'm not sure if/how much I should be criticizing the guy.

Also, could we set up some kind of system to indicate folks' grievance classification?  Something like (for example) Jesse Jackson Jr. (BM) for black male would be good.  I feel like I'm stepping through a minefield being critical of folks without knowing their race/gender/sexual orientation/whatever. I'd hate to be a racist/sexist/homophobe/whatever-ist-aphobe.

40 I don't know that it's so surprised that Rham is getting death threats.

I don't think it's the time to start killing or threatening people, but people like Rham are enemies of democracy and a lot of people are oh so frustrated with how corrupt the political system, from the MSM to the courts has become.

Rham could have easily leaked that he cooperated.  There is no doubt that did not.  He belongs in prison.

42 I think John Kass has already picked up the scent on this case.  Obama will have to pull a unicorn out of his ass to avoid the ultimate connection between his top advisers and this sorry-assed Blago "pay-to-play" deal for BObo's Senate seat.  While these political machinations might come as a shock to some, they come as no surprise to us who grew up around here and are familiar with the foul odor of Illinois politics.  Flush twice, it's a long way to the White House.

The middle possibility is very bad for Emanuel and by extension Obama.  Belated cooperation after initial participation only gets one a deal, and then only if a bigger fish were set to go into the deep fryer.  There's only one bigger fish than Emanuel.

48 CP, Rahm's Jewish, at least in the genetic sense-I don't know what his beliefs are.  The mention came up in a dust up a couple of weeks back when his father made some inartful comments about what kind of job he'd have-specifically not janitorial as he isn't an arab.

49 Teleprompter Jesus is a compulsive serial ratfucker.  He's the kind of ass that uses people like steppingstones and gratuitously kicks 'em in the teeth as he scampers over them.

Clan JJ has a trump card in this, though.  Once they figure-out that they're headed headlong for the pavement under the bus, they can call-in favors around the grievance industry and have BHO's blackness revoked.  I've already overheard talk of "no slave blood."

Any look past PEBO's swarthy outside into the content of his character reveals a run-of-the-mill, whiny metrosexual with no accomplishments and a sense of entitlement that could make a Saudi prince blush.

Not that Mccain wants it.  And frankly, I don't want him to have it and this is reading like a script to 24.  He's a a war hero who is a douchey politician who would never serve the interests of conservatism.  And a GOP president in the next four years would be blamed for all kinds of nonsense.

It's going to be great, though, if Biden gets the position.  He's a dumbass, but I think he knows it and I think he's got some kind of soul.  If he gave the VP nod to Hillary, he would die within two years.

As any of us from Chicago and work in/for this city can tell you. The AG wants the job (Governer). Period. She is from the same criminal mob known as the Chicago machine. She benefited from the same machine hacks that Obama , Blago, Rahm, Daley and the rest of that crew.  Her father is the Speaker of the Illinois Legislature. They are from Chicago like the rest of these crooks.

Compare it to the Sopranos. Mayor Daley being Tony. One of his Capos just got locked up, now the other Capos are jocking for that guys spot. Daley will figure out who is going to get Governer and TADA! she will be Governer. (Unless the electorate finally wakes up). She is one of them. It ALL goes back to Chicago and Daley. But why would the AG do this? Impeachment is the job of the legislature, not the courts

This might clear things up a little.

CHICAGO (AP) — She is the daughter of the powerful Illinois House speaker, the state's first female attorney general and a rising star in the Democratic party.

Lisa Madigan had a high profile long before Gov. Rod Blagojevich became engulfed in scandal, but the ongoing political soap opera has only elevated her status.

In an unprecedented move, she filed a motion Friday with the state Supreme Court asking justices to strip the governor of his powers.

"I recognize that this is an extraordinary request, but these are extraordinary circumstances," Madigan said. It was not immediately clear when the Supreme Court might take up the matter. The justices also have the discretion to deny the attorney general's request.

Eddie Rendell weighs in:

Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell today criticized Barack Obama for not being more upfront about the Illinois corruption scandal.

Now, he said, the story will continue to dominate the media’s attention.

“They have never been in an executive position before,” Rendell said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “The rule of thumb is whatever you did, say it and get it over with and make it a one-day story as opposed to a three-day story. Politicians are always misjudging the intelligence of the American people.”

Known for his blunt critiques of fellow Democrats, Rendell did not hold back during the interview.

The public, said Rendell, understands Obama and his aides would have an interest in who fills the Senate seat and some contact with the governor's office — and that Obama should have said as much at the outset.

"Did Rahm Emanuel, who took Rod Blagojevich's seat in Congress, have contact with Rod Blagojevich? Of course he did," Rendell said. "They may have thought he was the craziest S.O.B. in the world. But you still have to have contact with him."

Thanks for clearing things up, Ed.

75 Rahm better be careful or he's going to wake up some morning with a severed water buffalo penis (traditional Kenyan mob warning, similar to the Eye-talian thing with the horse head) lying on his pillow next to his head.

Okay.  Which is easier.

Cutting off a buffalo penis or a horses head?  I'd say buffalo penis if it's okay to kill the animal first.  If you can't kill the animal first,  I'd have to go with horses head.  If you can use a chainsaw.

Sneaking a horses head or buffalo penis into someone's bed?  Easy.  Buffalo penis.  If you get caught you can always say its a large piece of jerky.  Go back to sleep.  If the person recognizes it's a buffalo penis?  Well that would be awkward.

That's why I always just toss a hobo penis in the ol' mailbox.  Quick.  Easy.  To the point.  Done.

86 My sense is that 'not a target' does not equal "not on the tapes" or "not caught saying crooked or embarrasing things." It means effectively we've chosen not to pursue prosecution, either because the evidence of criminality is not sufficient, or because Emmanuel is cooperating in other ways, or maybe they just elected to overlook it.

Remember, Blagojevich at one point was cited as "Government Official A" in a US Atty affidavit against Rezko. The US Atty's office always publicly maintained that Blagojevich was 'not a target.'

Sorry, I'm sick of playing by Emily Post rules with people who have no scrupples.  Perhaps Rahm should have thought about treating people like scumbags if he didn't want to face the same.  He made his chops in the cutthroat world of Chicago politics and the Clinton White House.  The sleaziest of sleaze.

Besides, having to answer reporters questions in front of his kids is hardly a grilling by Torquemada.  If they had been there to do the usual Obama fluff piece he would have sought them out.

another interesting person is John De Leo http://tinyurl.com/6j4et7Man behind curtain is wizard of Rod, Rahm

...DeLeo is an extremely powerful politician. You know this because he's hardly ever quoted in newspaper stories.

Emanuel and DeLeo have a relationship. Emanuel is the congressman from the 5th Congressional District, where DeLeo is the Democratic state central committeeman. What hasn't been reported on much is that Emanuel has not yet resigned from the House. And if you want to play politics in Jimmy's sandbox, you need his OK.....

It's reasonable to assume that if there's one fellow Rod would talk to about the Senate seat, it's Jimmy. And given their relationship, Jimmy could talk to Rahm. I'm not suggesting money was offered. There is nothing illegal about politicians horse-trading to fill seats. Only when such deals are monetized—as the governor is alleged to have done—is it illegal.

I'm just talking about putting political pieces on the board the Chicago Way. A vacant Senate seat and a soon-to-be vacant House seat in Illinois would be a package deal. Consider this mathematical equation: Jimmy/Rod + Jimmy/Rahm = Happy Rod, Jimmy and Rahm. Get it?
