White House Considering Bailing Out The Automakers

The predictable White House Statement.

It is disappointing that while appropriate and effective legislation to assist and restructure troubled automakers received majority support in both houses, Congress nevertheless failed to pass final legislation. The approach in that legislation provided an opportunity to use funds already appropriated for automakers, and presented the best chance to avoid a disorderly bankruptcy while ensuring taxpayer funds go only to firms whose stakeholders were prepared to make the difficult decisions to become viable, competitive firms in the future.

Under normal economic conditions we would prefer that markets determine the ultimate fate of private firms. However, given the current weakened state of the U.S. economy, we will consider other options if necessary – including use of the TARP program -- to prevent a collapse of troubled automakers. A precipitous collapse of this industry would have a severe impact on our economy, and it would be irresponsible to further weaken and destabilize our economy at this time.

While the federal government may need to step in to prevent an immediate failure, the auto companies, their labor unions, and all other stakeholders must be prepared to make the meaningful concessions necessary to become viable.

Last night's efforts failed when the UAW refused to agree to wage parity between US automakers and non-union foreign manufactures with plants here in the US.

I wonder how the lower paid but profitable non-union workers at Honda and Toyota plants here in the US feel about their taxes going to prop up their overpaid and bankrupt competitors.

If the White House uses TARP money to bridge the Big Rapidly Shrinking 3 to early next year and there are no meaningful strings attached, then the UAW's game of chicken will have paid off. It's not like the new Congress, with less Republicans, is going to impose the kind of conditions like Bob Corker and other Senate Republicans were working on yesterday.

In the WSJ Opinion section

U.S. Says It Will Bail Out Christmas, Easter and even Valentine's Day might be next.

With the government on the brink of rescuing the U.S. auto industry, we have learned that the Treasury Department is drawing up plans to bail out Christmas. "We have reason to believe," said a person close to the matter, "that without an immediate capital injection, Santa Claus will fail before December 24." Mr. Claus could not be reached for comment.

Government officials are said to be concerned at the risk that the collapse of Santa Claus could pose to the nation's intricately related system of holiday happiness. Though a failure by Santa Claus poses the largest systemic risk, the government is also prepared to step in to bail out Christmas trees, caroling parties and mistletoe producers.

President-elect Barack Obama has been briefed on the initiative, and through a spokesman was quoted as saying, "I'm OK with bailing out Christmas."

Inside Treasury, some officials privately worry that such a precedent could result in the nationalization of Santa Claus, leading to similar calls for help next year from the Easter Bunny and even Valentine's Day. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson personally concluded, however, that "Santa Claus is too big to fail.".............

11 Ron Gettelfinger UAW President is having trouble understanding the meaning of parity. He explains in an earlier press conference, If you use the Toyota plant as a benchmark, after the 8K bonus and such it puts their workers just over $35 an hour and our workers at only $28.14 an hour. You can't have a benchmark with such a moving target. Yanno? You don't know the dealer or supplier programs, manager pay scale or kickbacks. Its apples and oranges he says. Bleeping Senate Republicans anyway! Bleep them!

17 Okay, how are RINOs better than out and out Commiecrats? It's President Bush who has forcibly seized and nationalized a good portion of the financial industry through the first bailout. (Remember Paulson locking the heads of nine banks into a room and saying he wouldn't let them out until they signed the agreement?) It's Bush who increased the size of government over three times through NCLB and the Medicare prescription drug plan. It's President Bush who claimed to be fighting a war by "winning hearts and minds" and building schools and hospitals and such instead of, you know, fighting a war. For crying out loud, he nominated Harriet Miers to the SCOTUS. McCain-Feingold limits political speech, the most important kind of speech to protect. Bush even offered to sign the Brady Bill if Congress renewed it.

There is not a single bogeyman about Communists that hasn't <em>actually been implemented</em> by Bush. Clinton didn't accomplish it. Carter didn't accomplish it. Decades of Democratic governance in the Congress didn't accomplish it. Bush did with a RINO Congress.

So why defend RINOs? If the country sinks into Communism, it is the Republicans who have put us there.

Question: If the Big 3 get bailed-out (and they will) then that means they will continue to build thousands and thousands of cars that nobody is going to buy. What are they going to do with all those cars? Let them sit in huge lots and rot?

I also read a headline in the elevator at work that anounced that the board of GM doesn't believe that bankruptcy is a "viable option" - what skeletons in their closet don't they want the public to know about?

19 Brad S. - so selling out your "principles" is conservative? Because principles suck if there's blowback from upholding them? 31 In the long run, though, the RINOs do more harm than good to the conservative cause because, even if you are able to cajole them into voting a particular way on a particular issue, they won't always be willing to do that.  (If they would, they wouldn't be RINOs!)  So they will side with the Commiecrats in the name of conservative ideals and then the conservative philosophy will bear the blame.

Posted by: chemjeff at December 12, 2008 11:48 AM (wy+AE)

32 For the umpteenth time, Bush isn't a conservative. He remains a big government moderate that is less government than any Democrat administration would ever be, but bigger government remains his legacy.

He triumphed in the defense of our nation during a very dangerous time, so that's a feather in his cap he'll always have and we should always appreciate; however, big picture, he's been a huge disappointment to conservatism. However unfair and weighted against him the media establishment has been during his entire tenure, Bush's use of the bully pulpit to advance conservatism has been poor. Is it because he's been rather busy with global threats? Of course, but he should have been able to walk and chew gum at the same time.

His greatest failing (next to his limited communication skills), however, was his coordination with his political enemies to expand government. This TARP fiasco is just the last reminder we'll have to his relatively big government bona fides.

According to Getelfinger UAW itself was willing to do this.  The obstacle, of course, was that Corker and the Republicans required a certain date, any date, in 2009, for this to occur.  UAW wasn't willing to do this because (a) they aren't bargaining in good faith here, and (b) they want time to unionize the foreign car manufacturers, made much easier with Card Check, and reach parity THAT way - with everybody paying $75/hr.

Why do I think all of this is going to lead to a dual currency like the Soviet ruble used to be.... one "paper ruble" for everyone, one "gold" ruble for party members, all stores take the ruble, but only the party affiliated stores have quality goods, and they don't believe in the 1/64th or less value of the 'paper' ruble.

In the future, should I have a choice between purchasing a new car produced by one of the Detroit auto makers as designed by the likes of Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid ( hey she's super smart, a top notch Catholic theologian in her spare time even!) and one produced by say Toyota or Honda, I would voluntarily be helping to support Ron Stinkyfinger's UAW union and the Dem pols they have bought and paid for.

That would be like me donating to the ACLU or moveon.org, I guess.

But don't worry you Republican Party hacks, I'm sure you can count on the Union vote to come over to your side in droves just like the Hispanic vote did as a result of the amnesty proposal.  Besides, the Democrats are famous for their tolerance and bi-partisan willingness to work with you so, no worries.

What need have the Republicans for a base comprised of people interested in such quaint and peculiar ideas as fiscal responsibility, free markets, individual rights or any of that other rubbish in the Constitution?

56 The Democrats are trying to make as much of this unsavory stuff pass under the banner of bipartisanship so they will get the benefit without the blame. They've been pressuring Bush to provide for them cover because some things are wholly rejected by voters but desired by some special interests. For example,

1) Comprehensive POS: Public against, Democrat pols for, Bush for, Republican pols generally for but forced to be against

2) Funding WoT/Iraq: Public for, Bush for, Republican pols for, Democrat pols against

3) Government bailout: Public against, Democrat pols for, Bush for, Republican pols generally for but forced to be against

In 1) and 3) above, the Democrats side with Bush's policy but lose when public opinion is included. They want to make the issue bipartisan so that the public cannot blame and punish them for unpopular policy. Let the Democrats try to force those issues under their own watch without Republican cover.

In 2) above, Bush had public support, got his funding, and won the war in Iraq despite every effort by the Donks to force Bush to withdraw and make Bush the loser by his own accord. Bush did not acquiesce. The Democrats lost and lost big, but they needed Bush's support so that he could do himself in. He didn't and history has and will prove him right.

Bush is only helping the Democrats if he continues backing these growing calls for bailouts. Some problems peaked under his administration, so the Donks will blame him as politics are played no matter what. If the kicking of the economic can succeeds, the Donks will take credit now particularly in the specific case of the domestic auto industry and big union (UAW). Bush can only hurt himself, and by extension conservative governance, by backing yet another bailout even if wrapped by the code-word "loan."

In a good faith negotiation, a publically-subsidized loan could be acceptable, but what have we observed in our current economic fall that would indicate that management, labor, or governance is acting in good faith? They have not and do not deserve any benefit of the doubt whatsoever.

Right.  He's a liberal Republican like his dad, another milquetoast failure of a President.  A squish is someone whose positions are determined by first putting a finger in the air.  Bush uses that finger instead to gently poke it into the eyes of the productive and responsible among us who actually believe in, like, personal responsibility, limited government, meritocracy, and all that other crazy shit.

The guy is a domestic tragedy you can really set your watch to.  He's another in a depressingly long line of crappy Republicans who grew up in comfort and have nurtured the conceit that their magnanimity is best demonstrated by recklessly spending the hard-earned money of others on their own soft-headed, emotive, preening moral crusades.

Bush can take his antithetical-to-American-principles "compassionate conservatism", his "government must act", his "everyone in Africa gets a Playstation", his "Justice Meals on Wheels", and his "jobs Americans won't do" schticks and cram them in his cramhole.  Sideways.  With extreme prejudice.

But, unlike McCain, I have no doubt that he's not laying the groundwork for the collapse of the United States to satisfy his own cathedral-sized ego.  At least he's got that on the old bastard.

68 That kind of character is outstanding; it's just a shame that he turned out to be a squish so often.

He's not a "squish." He's an out-of-touch elitist who never had to face the realities of running a business because his dad's rich friends were always around to bail him out. He thinks the same "principle"applies to other failing businesses, except instead of daddy calling in favors, he has Treasury print up more dough.

Posted by: V the K at December 12, 2008 01:10 PM (d2fuu)

69 "A squish is someone whose positions are determined by first putting a finger in the air. "

Well, that's certainly not what I meant by squish.

You can't just call him a liberal, though.  Liberals nowadays don't fight wars and don't cut taxes.  They certainly don't stop federal funding of embryonic stem cell research or bother themselves about sticking forks in the back of a baby's skull.

So he's something else; he's a moderate.  I don't think that's a good thing, mind you, but it's more accurate than calling him a liberal.

"Bush uses that finger instead to gently poke it into the eyes of the productive and responsible among us who actually believe in, like, personal responsibility, limited government, meritocracy, and all that other crazy shit."

No, you're misreading the guy.  He doesn't want to poke anybody in the eye.  He's just willing to let you get poked if that's an unfortunate side effect of him doing what he believes is his Christian duty.

Unfortunately, I think President Bush's Christian sensibilities have led him to become a lot more patronizing and condescending than he realizes.  He doesn't seem to have much of a long view on the ultimate effects of his bad policies, which is kind of ironic since I don't think he lacks the capacity for a long-view, particularly when it comes to the fight against Islamic terrorism.

The silly assed reference to "since Viet Nam" has no place in honoring the valor of these Americans.  8 Silver Stars in a regimental sized battle in Nam with most of them going "behind the lines" officers is not a fair comparison.

This is about small group determination to prevail and survive.

I was the Boat Captain of an ASPB on January 11th, 1969.  At the time this was the most highly decorated " Brown Water Navy" unit to have served in Viet Nam,

6 men.

6 Purple Hearts, 2 Bronze Stars (w/combat V) 1 Silver Star (mine), and 1 Navy Cross.

This SPECFOR story is the finest example of an American "Band of Brothers" during the war on Islamic terror I've read since 11Sep01.

Most of FDR’s communist policies during his first two years were Hoover programs that he (FDR) took credit for.

No, doing shit like this cocksucking asshole of a communist bailout and takeover of private industry is exactly what caused the great GD depression to begin with.  All we need now is for the One to call for some more big tariff increases and to kill some of the free trade agreements. Do that at the same time all of the bailout money dries up.

So hello soup fucking kitchens for assholes that voted all these cocksuckers in office.

Only faggots and sailors drive Buicks.  They used to drive Oldsmobiles, but even they realized that they were total pieces of shit and GM mercifully took that division out back and shot it.

Unfortunately, it's legacy of suck lives on in it's shitty counterparts like Pontiac and Buick.  Even if the gummint paid off every single dollar of debt, it will not change the fact that GM makes shitty cars that are overpriced and failure prone.

I'm about to toss a match on my wife's Suburban - what a rickety piece of cheap monkey shit.  In two years, I've had to lay out over $2k in non-warranted repairs.  Fuck you, GM.  I hope you take the gas pipe, fucker.
