Obama-Blagojevich Timeline

I don't think many people believe that Axelrod merely "mispoke" when he said Obama and Blagojevich had been in contact about his Senate seat. But I don't expect the media to do much follow-up. Fortunately, Jim Lindgren has put together an interesting timeline which seems to indicate that Obama, or someone highly placed on his staff, knew something was up.

As Lindgren cautions, "it's not the crime; it's the coverup."

1 No no no. Pravda has already stated that the Messiah is completely clean and that there's no reason at all for them to investigate anything. Evil Republicans may try to use this against The One but he is completely clean. And Pravda will resist any temptations to do its job and look into this.

It is clear from the record that Obama and Blag were close, at least politically as they had done much for each other over the years.

Now we are supposed to believe that Obama would have NO INTERACTION at all with Blag regarding his Senatorial replacement?  I'm sorry, but that is just ludicrous.  Of COURSE they would have discussed it.

As usual, it's not the crime that gets you, it's the coverup.  Obama should have just said, "yeah, of course we discussed it, but there was no mention of 'pay for play' or anything like that..."  By claiming there was 'no interaction at all", Obama may have stepped in it here.

Of course, if he gets caught on tape talking to Blag about it, he can just say he "misspoke" and everything will be fine.

The definition of "misspoke":

"To make a clear and declarative statement which later turns out to be inconvenient..."

6 I'm a little disappointed in that I thought Obama was smarter than this.  I'm reasonably sure he won't get much personal fallout from the Blago situation (close associates may -- IL politics is way corrupt), but surely he could have avoided Clintonian parsing of his behavior.

OTOH, given all the other stuff he has managed to keep from public view, why should he think this will be any different.  Only if the MSM for some reason begins to care will it matter.  I don't think they will.  The cost for them is too high now that they've delivered their integrity to Teh One.

Doubtful.  The feds only filed a criminal complaint yesterday after the Federal agents entered testimony into an affidavit.  The feds now have a few weeks to convene a Grand Jury to hear the sworn testimony to decide if any charges should be filed.

Furthermore, the Governor is still the Governor today.  He has legislation waiting to be signed that the Feds claim they have him on tape admitting to leaving it on his desk to be signed until he receives his bribe.  That bill is SCHIP funding that is supposed to go to doctors that work at Children's Memorial Hospital.

Another bill waiting on his desk to be signed is one where casino revenues(Democrats in the state that hire Republican consultants) are supposed to be diverted in a percentage to the horse racing industry(Republicans in the state that hire Democratic consultants).

The press should be in feeding frenzy mode.  There's probably a few hundred Mark Felt type story lines in Illinois the national press could dig up if they want to.

20 What this story has displayed, again, is that Obama's first instinct is to lie.  Instead of issuing a blanket denial, Obama should have said that while he and Blagojevich did discuss the succession, he had no idea the governor was engaged in such disgraceful behind the scenes behavior.  A blanket lie gives too many opportunities for gotcha moments.

33 On November 12, 2008, ROD BLAGOJEVICH spoke with SEIU Official, who was in Washington, D.C. Prior intercepted phone conversations indicate that approximately a week before this call, ROD BLAGOJEVICH met with SEIU Official to discuss the vacant Senate seat, and ROD BLAGOJEVICH understood that SEIU Official was an emissary to discuss Senate Candidate 1’s interest in the Senate seat.

Lindgren's time line is great but it starts days too late.
Blago met with an SEIU official concerning this approximately a week before Nov 12. Since Blago starts mentioning deals around Nov 3 I would say that is when. The news story above claims Obama is meeting personally with Blago to discuss it on Nov 5. Where did the reporter get that idea? She didn't just make it up, it had to come from Obama's people.

Blago is meeting with Stern and Obama within a day of each other, if not at the same meeting, to discuss Jarret and Obama knows nothing? Yeah right.

The press is assuming Blago knew crap about Jarret until Obama announced his desires in the papers. Does anyone believe that? No prior heads up to his buddy and guy actually making the appointment?

Obama is dirty as shit on this. I doubt Obama and Blago talked specifics but I'm sure that he assured Blago Stern was his go to man on this and could be trusted to make a deal for him.

Obama didn't pull the plug because of any investigation. he pulled the plug because Blago was asking for too much and instead torpedoed Blago.

Ill. governor meeting with Obama today

By Carol Sowers

CHICAGO, ILL. -- Now that Barack Obama will be moving to the White House, his seat in the U.S. Senate representing Illinois will have to be filled.

That's one of Obama's first priorities today.

He's meeting with Governor Rod Blagojevich this afternoon in Chicago to discuss it.

Anyone else think that Fitz acted too quickly?  In order to keep the situation from getting too big?  To keep anything from reaching Obama?  To avoid another Watergate?

In most surveillance cases don't they wait to catch the biggest fish they can get?  It looks like Fitz jumped the gun.  A deal was in the works and they should have waited to see what deal was reached.

It looks like Fitz thought that Obama was about to make a counter offer and stopped a negotiation in progress.  If Blag's phone was tapped wouldn't they know who and when Blag was going to announce who the new senator was?  I don't buy the line that Fitz wanted to act before Blag appointed a new senator.

I think one of two things happened.

Fitz acted stupidly in order to protect Obama and others.  Fitz should have waited for a deal to be completed.  See who won the auction for the senate seat.  See how the game is played and who the players are and more importantly,  who the winners are.

Or,  Fitz was aware that Obama found out about the extent of the investigation of Blag (wire taps and all) and backed out of making a deal with Blag.

So if Obama knew about the wire taps  why didn't another player surface to make a deal with Blag?  Did Obama share the information about the wire taps with all the other dem players?

The wire tap transcripts and lack of further arrests look like Fitz got a lot of talk from one guy wanting to solicit offers to sell a senate seat.  Fitz should have waited to see who started making offers to buy a senate seat.

As far as police work goes,  it's damn sloppy.

53 The evidence that Obama (and/or his direct aides) met with Rod is obvious from just the comments that Rod made on tape.

The fact that Obama came out and produced an implausible and easily refutable lie to cover his tracks shows that he is not accustomed to any degree of scrutiny.

His inability to lie convincingly on a national stage spells serious trouble for his role as absolute leader...before he has even begun.

The hits have just begun, and his performance thus far has only served to make things worse for himself in the long run. Unless the corruption includes every level of government, and the evidence does not support that assertion, we may be about to witness more Nixonian times in the near future.

I think Byron York's article about Blags being spooked by a press report is probably the most logical reason why Fitz moved yesterday. I think that fears that Fitz is trying to protect Obama or "prevent another watergate," are just silly because if Fitz was to uncover something that big he would be set for life. For fucks sake, Bob Woodward is still resting on those laurels he earned from Watergate.

I also don't see any reason for Team Obama to be optimistic about the future of this case. It almost certainly means grand jury testimonies (possibly from Obama, himself) which opens one up for perjury not to mention that little whopper he told the press yesterday when he said he never had any contact with Blags about filling of the vacancy, which contradicts not only his campaign advisor but a press report that was dated Nov 5 that states that they were to meet to discuss the replacement.

Plus, I suspect that Team Obama wasn't exactly the little church lady blowing the whistle on Blags like some rumors going around now. First, it would be insane to do so. This is Chicago, and you don't rat people out to the Feds. What goes around comes around.

67 It looks like the Chicago Tribune was tipping its hand pretty publicly on the investigations Fitzgerald was in the process of starting or wrapping up just after Obama was elected. Its editorial is actually pretty effective at forcing Obama into the corner of keeping Fitzgerald as AG during Obama's administration lest Obama look like a) yet another hack covering tracks from the Chicago machine and b) yet another fraud of a politician who egregiously backs away from yet another campaign promise.

Obama pretty much has to keep Fitzgerald in his administration, at least early anyway, to continue draining the Chicago cesspool. How much is, of course, yet to be seen, but the Chicago Tribune has its own vested interest in purging some players from the city because its staff knows that some, and surely Blagojevich isn't the only one, want them muted and fired. Ideology aside, a paycheck and employment might actually make some of them critical even of The One should He renege on his promise to do some clean up in Chicago. An early exit of Fitzgerald by Obama/Axelrod/Rahm request would surely indict the Obama administration.

It will be interesting to see how deep Fitzgerald digs, for how long, and what nuggets get found. The Chicago Tribune's quest for self-preservation might actually do some good.

I'm still of the opinion that Obama and his camp are going to be able to spin this as something Obama helped bring about to show how serious he is about cleaning up corruption. The media still won't dig, hell they are already using the Obama fed talking points "a distraction for Obama" Axelrod "misspoke" and not looking any deeper. Now they've planted Obama's Ethics bill as having a role in bringing Blago down, coupled with the seeds they planted yesterday that Obama's team helped with the case.

We may not believe the bullshit around here, but knowing several Obamanuts I can tell you they will fall for it hook line and sinker. Problem solved, Obama comes out looking all sad, and serious, but resolved in his righteous role, and people that were "incovenient" to him find themselves gone.

Hey Blago  ol buddy - if that idiot NY governor doesn't pick me to replace Hillary can I be candidate number 6 in Illnois?  I have lots of cash since I'm still getting residuals from that piece of shit sit-com I was in.

Yours truly,

Fran

Duckworth comments on consideration for Senate

By Alexis Hunt
Saturday, November 08, 2008 at 9:48 p.m.

QUINCY, IL -- Now that Barack Obama will be moving to the White House, his seat in the U.S. Senate representing Illinois will have to be filled.

Obama met with Governor Rod Blagojevich earlier this week to discuss it.  Illinois law states that the governor chooses that replacement. There's already been speculation about his selection...from Congressman Jesse Jackson, Junior to Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs Director Tammy Duckworth.

Duckworth made an appearance in Saturday's Veterans' parade in Quincy. We asked her about the possibility of filling Obama's seat.

"The Governor's office confirmed yesterday that he is considering me and I am deeply honored jus to be considered. I hope whoever is selected is someone who is willing to travel around the state and gets to know this wonderful state. I'm just honored to be considered," Duckworth said.

The governor expects to make his decision before Christmas. Part of the timing depends on when Obama officially vacates his senate seat.

*In Chicago politics, "Motherfucker" is a term of endearment.

74 The lying liar lies. People like Obama who lie equally easily about the small stuff ( “Have you stopped smoking?” “I have,” Obama replied, smiling broadly. “What I said was that there are times where I have fallen off the wagon.” “Wait a minute, that means you haven’t stopped.”“Fair enough”) and the big stuff (Ayers was just a guy in my neighborhood; no association with ACORN; did not discuss his Senate replacement with Blago) have a deeply flawed character and will never stop.

Posted by: LAsue at December 10, 2008 02:01 PM (2V7nL)

75 Here’s another date to plug into the timeline: According to this report, Obama met with Blagojevich on Wednesday, November 5, 2008, to discuss his replacement, which sort of contradicts his statement, “I had no contact with the governor or his office and so we were not, I was not aware of what was happening.”

“I had no contact with the governor or his office and so we were not, I was not aware of what was happening."

Barack you need to be a little quicker on your feet - I'd suggest spending more time with Bill Clinton he can teach you a lot about avoiding these little verbal slip ups.
