President Elect Obama: Climate Change a Matter of "National Security"

Unclear on the concept.

President-elect Barack Obama said on Tuesday attacking global climate change is a "matter of urgency" that will create jobs as he got advice from Al Gore, who won a Nobel Peace Prize for his work on the issue.

In remarks to reporters, Obama made clear he would adopt an aggressive approach to global warming when he takes over the White House on January 20.

Nonsense peppered with supportive economic arguments, fighting climate change will be "good for the economy" and "create jobs". In case you weren't convinced this dire threat to our "national security" ought to be confronted with all appropriate urgency.

It's the magical trifecta.

We have the opportunity now to create jobs all across this country, in all 50 states, to re-power America, to redesign how we use energy, to think about how we are increasing efficiency, to make our economy stronger, make us more safe, reduce our dependence on foreign oil and make us competitive for decades to come, even as we're saving the planet," Obama said.

We'll create jobs (federal), re-power ourselves (pixy dust), redesign our energy use (stop using it), think (think), strengthen our economy (tax it), be safer (ignore actual threats), reduce our dependence on foreign oil (see stop using it) make us more competitive (ignorant) AND save the planet.

All that and more. Now what would you pay?

9 This is like recycling on steroids. Total Bullshit for the most part but it "creates" crappy jobs in every community. I'm sure the people who get laid off from the big 3 will jump at the chance to build solar panels for $12 an hour.

10 Pay attention! The message is slowly evolving into "climate change" from "global warming" - the backers are beginning to understand that betting against the Sun (a Solar Minimum) was a bad move.  This community will slowly stop talking about polar bear extinction and morph into a concerned forum of professionals addressing the potential impacts (famine, etc) of a cooling period.  I hope somebody is keeping score.

14 Governor Arnold is peddling the same crap in Kalifornia.  Made a BIG presentation on how the state was going to lead the way in the Green Revolution.  Only problem was that the state's fiscal people did an analysis and stated that most of the claims were BOGUS and OVERSTATED.  Peer review on the study also castigated those who wrote it for invalid and unsubstantiated claims.  Standby for a further exodus of businesses from the People's Republic.

17 And the dirty little secret is that the manufacturing processes for all the eco-crap technology is very energy intensive itself, and also very dirty.  Modern wind turbines are made from fiberglass composites.  To make fiberglass you have to "melt" sand.  Takes a lot of energy to do that.  And the process involves using extruders made from platnium and rhodium, two precious and rare metals.  Geothermal?  You've got to dig up gigantic chunks of earth and install insulated pipes to carry water back and forth to get any use out of it.  Talk about ravaging the earth.  But solar power is the worst of all.  You need ultraclean silicon to make good solar panels, about as pure of silicon as you need to make computer processors.  Making ultrapure silicon is a nasty, nasty process.  You take sand and heat it up really high, producing silicon that is about 98% pure.  But that is not good enough.  You take that silicon and you blow over it trichlorosilane gas.  This gas is nasty.  It is toxic, corrosive, and decomposes in water to produce acids.  You have lots of water in your eyes.  If it comes in contact with your eyes, you are in a world of pain.  This gas can then decompose to produce purer silicon.  Repeat until you have ultrapure silicon.  The byproducts of this process all constitute extremely hazardous waste.  It should come as no big surprise that most of the computer chip manufacturing occurs in other countries, since if it were done here the regulations on the waste alone would make computers cost about $5000 each.  Nobody wants to talk about this.  As usual the eco-nazis know nothing about the law of unintended consequences.

18 That ain't nuthin. The trial lawyers are coming.

<blockquote>People affected by worsening storms, heatwaves and floods could soon be able to sue the oil and power companies they blame for global warming, a leading climate expert has said.
Myles Allen, a physicist at Oxford University, said a breakthrough that allows scientists to judge the role man-made climate change played in extreme weather events could see a rush to the courts over the next decade.
He said: “We are starting to get to the point that when an adverse weather event occurs we can quantify how much more likely it was made by human activity. And people adversely affected by climate change today are in a position to document and quantify their losses. This is going to be hugely important."</blockquote>

Joanna,

In all honesty, the moon-like region of the planet you're referring to is the strip mine used to produce the nickel that's in the batteries powering the Prius.  But it's the same overall point.  The scariest part is that the real enviro-Nazis realize all this, which is why they oppose everything.  So they criticize car makers for not making greener cars.  Okay, then Toyota unveils the Prius.  Then they criticize the greedy corporations that pollute the earth producing the nickel.  Fine, we'll have cars that run on compressed natural gas.  Then they complain about the global warming produced by the burned gas.  Eventually they will simply stand and oppose cars altogether.  And all the rest of technology.  You should read some of the posts on these enviro-nut blogs.  Their answer to our environmental dilemmas are all so simple: "Just walk or ride a bike, stupid!" they breathlessly type while sipping a latte at a downtown New York cafe.

Of course he has to say that because they have already worn out “do it for the children”.  If the politicians had to live with the truth in advertising law the phrase would be “Do it for the communists” because that is what we are seeking.

The other great question is why hasn’t some dumb ass reporter asked him how it will “help” the economy to put in all of these new “taxes” on stuff like pig and cow farts.  And if the intent is to reduce greenhouse gasses then why isn’t the plan revenue neutral. If farmers are going to have to pay tens of thousands of dollars in taxes on pig fats then where are the tens of thousands of dollars in tax breaks to offset that?

Oh, stupid question. There are no reporters, only propaganda readers.

I doubt that the One is going to back off on this one. It fits well with his overall communist agenda and gives him a triple shot. He gets to increase taxes (more socialism), he gets the so-called cap and trade influence peddling scheme so that they can get more money from lobbyists and special interest groups, AND he can bankrupt a number of companies that don’t get the special “influence”. Those companies well come seeking a “bailout” and will be nationalized like the banks, soon to be car companies, and the city bus systems.

As for allowing the government to regulate things easier, they ALREADY regulate nearly everything in your life. The American public would probably go insane if the knew the extent that government regulations control their life.

Anyone remember chemistry or physics?

Imagine a closed system where you don't control the rate of energy entering or exiting the system, the duration of the experiment, the pressure of the system and you can only alter a minisucle percentage of the location of the chemicals involved. In that experiment, can you reasonably expect to control the temperature of the system?

I doubt it. Seriously, outside of a nuclear winter, we don't have the ability to alter weather. So how, pray tell, are we going to mitigate "climate change?" I only ask because as an earth scientist who has a decade of expierence in oil and gas, and is working on alternative energy, I'd be interested in knowing what page of my college text books had the chapter on "Ignoring earth's history and pretty every damn rule of matter and energy for fun and profit" because I must have missed that day.

Ok, being one of those physical chemists, I'll bite.  The answer is 'yes', depending on what you mean by reasonable.  The question, however, could have been better put as, "Can you reasonably expect to control the temperature of the system to any degree that matters in terms of species survival or environmental cost?"...

I'm wondering if what we'll have is rolling brownouts/blackouts for most of us, but special rules for the important areas - Beverly Hills, Manhattan, D.C. etc., who will require a constant stream of high quality electricity.

Politicians will attempt to forestall urban riots by providing as much electricity as they can. Living conditions will be squalid for the poor, much better for the enclaves of professionals. The nomenklatura always take care of themselves.

Rural areas will find their own ways to survive, and attempts at government regulation will be met with violence and inspectors 'disappearing.'

The suburbs? That's where the real sacrifices will be made. People will be told to simply walk away from their homes, mortgages, credit ratings and dreams of a comfortable life and squeeze into an inner city hellhole to save the earth. Yes, I know you have two degrees and have worked your ass off to make a better life for your family, but that was selfishness - you should have been making a better life for everyone.

Things could really get dystopian in a green utopia.

This.  For all of Obama's posturing, he seems to have a genuine and serious aversion to the entire concept of suburbs (as do a lot of lefties)... maybe to the point of contempt for their existence.  If "sacrifices" have to be made, the suburbs seem to be the ideal place to make it happen.  Can't afford gas under the Obama plan of manufactured scarcity and high taxes?  Move to the city.  Afraid of losing your home, or watching its value plummet?  I guess you'll just have to move to the city and find something that is more sustainable.  The left has always hated the suburbs.  Too white, too selfish, too big, too wasteful, too Republican.  The "right" energy policy can make them go away.

has anyone seen the new REALITY commercials about clean coal?

or how about the new repoWEr america commercials....you know the one with the cockholster saying "unless you have something against creating new jobs"

everytime i see that bullshit i want to dump some toxic waste in their hippie city farm gardens.

76 75:

I actually agree with Reality.  Screw clean coal, burn it dirty.

As for Repower America, what a joke.  They want 43% of electricity to come from wind/solar in 10 years.  I only wonder how they think they will do it... slowly starving away 95% of the US population, or use the Bill Ayers "round 'em up 'n slaughter 'em" method.  But at least their list of "experts" who "validate" the plan is worth a good laugh.

So, I'm curious about this. If all those white people with their white ideas, values, money and votes really do move into the cities in droves, when do the Gentrification eradication squads come out?

Posted by: bonhomme at December 10, 2008 01:42 PM (WLhT+)

78 ^^

It's all conjecture, of course, but I don't think most (white) libs really have a problem with gentrification, as they are the main culprits.  As for the suburban values problem, you have a point there, but the contempt for suburban sprawl still exists regardless.

Read Michael Crichton's book "State of Fear" (written in 2004); amazingly he predicted the switch from Global Warming to Global Climate Change...he saw this bullshit coming and had incredible detail in the book that refutes this hoax.  Tell all your friends to read this.  I told my wife a few years ago and converted her, and now our 3 children from eco nuts to real world thinkers.

One of our children, 12 year old girl, was really unabashedly heading down the liberal path, and after opening her eyes to this (starting with an explanation of why the "list of healthy allowable snacks" she brought home from school was utter nonsense) liberal thinking and exposing its hyprocrasies, she is now a convert and really understands and now asks intelligent questions.

This is truly the only way to combat this.  We must try as hard as we can to slow the development of the socialist/entitlement centralized government thinking of today, but the only real way is through new blood into our cause.  WE are the only people who can bring the new Bobby Jindal's and Sarah Palin's into the process.  It's up to US!

80 All of this is part of Obama's FDR-esque ponzi scheme of make work.  If you suddenly declare every light bulb in America as effectively being "broken"  then of course we need the 'The Light Bulb Bridgade' to run about the place manufacturing and screwing in proper "working" light bulbs.

I can see the national pride post right now:  A Navy seaman saluting in front of a supercarrier, an Army soldier handing a box of MRE's to a starving Darfurian, a Marine sternly looking down the sight of his trusty AR, and a Light Bulb Tech in a blue jumper and yellow hard hat while wearing safety glasses and carefully scrutinizing a CFL bulb.

81 Phooie this while CLIMATE CHANGE is a natural occuring phenomina its nothing to do with our SUVs or industires its just a phonie attempts at WORLD GOVERMENT run by the evil UN its just a attempt by the sinister green nazis from GREENPEACE and the SIERRA CLUB to control our lives time to stick the junk science inspired KYOTO TREATY IN THE PAPER SHREADER like liberals want to do with our U.S. CONSTITUTION

Posted by: Spurwing Plover at December 10, 2008 02:56 PM (uAxNV)

82 Also,  not to mention the fact that this will reinvigorate the light bulb joke industry as we know it.

Like: "How many Libtards does it take to change a light bulb?  12,739 -- 1 to change the light bulb and another 12,738 to petition for the request, route to the document processing department, review the request's efficacy in the oversight committe, rubber stamp the approval, audit the regulatory policy framework and procedures, and finally upload the request into the archival storage system.  THEN someone flips the switch on and a polar bear gets to have a Coke and a smile."

You'll note that Obama never adresses the question of how these "green" jobs will create VALUE--that is, he never explains what these jobs are that anyone wants to pay to have done, or why noone is doing them now if there's this great untapped market available for them.

Also, all the environmental propaganda I've been exposed to seems to have backfired--every time I hear an econazi buzzword like, "Global Warming," "Global Climate Change," or "Green-collar jobs" I want to start a tire fire.  Seriously, today I saw a letter-to-the-editor in the paper exhorting everyone to turn down their thermostats to save energy and reduce CO2 emissions and whatnot, and my reaction was to think something like, "I wonder if I could cut my electric bill by burning old tires in the woodstove in the basement?"  (I have electric heat).

The H4 replica watches took replica watches Harrison a massive 13 years to replica watches construct-but this was only the end of a lifetime's work. His genius was clear from the very beginning. Unfortunately many astronomers such as Nevil Maskelyne were convinced that a mechanical solution replica watches would not work and that only astronomy could solve the replica watches longitude problem. The fact that Harrison was from a working class family and had little replica watches formal education probably didn't help his prospects.Solving the longitude problem through horology meant designing a timepiece that could work accurately at sea.
