Obama and Blago-whassisname: History Repeats Itself Yet Again? Not So Much.

I don't know why this old movie came to mind while I was listening to news reports on the arrest of the Governor of Illinois this morning, but the 1995 HBO movie "Truman" has been in my thoughts today. It's not good enough to run out and spend money on a copy of this movie, but if you're a history buff, consider putting it in your Netflix queue.

Essentially, it was a biopic of President Harry Truman. What was unusual about this movie for me was it's focus on his pre-Washington ties to the political machine back in Independence, Missouri. In one scene, Gary Sinise (who did a pretty good job as Truman, IMHO) goes back to Missouri to visit his old political patron, played by character actor extrordinaire Pat Hingle. The old man is under fire for corruption, but he understands that Truman can't help him out of his jam without putting the kibosh on his own career. The old man gives Truman his blessing and allows "Give 'Em Hell Harry" to toss him under the bus for the good of the country. It makes you think: Will Governor Blawhassisname be as gracious to The One True Lightworker when the wolves are breathing down his neck? No, I don't think so either. Neither party is exactly the heir to Truman's Democratic legacy.

I'm not a huge Truman fan, but I believe he was a decent man who tried to do the right thing the whole time he served his country. Henry Wallace, FDR's prior vice-president, grew up near Orient, Iowa which is only about 20 miles from where I grew up near Winterset. Instead of feeling that a fellow good ol' Iowa boy got cheated out of being president after FDR died in office, I thank God that one of Stalin's "Useful Idiots" was replaced on the Presidential ticket by a decent man who had the testicular fortitude to use The Bomb and avoid millions of casualties among both American Servicemen AND Japanese Civilians.

Harry Truman was a Democrat, but the Pelosis, Reeds and Schumers of today's Democratic Party would abso-freakin-lutely give him the Lieberman treatment if he were running for office today. And Governor "shake down the children's hospital....for the children"? Not only couldn't he carry Harry Truman's jockstrap, but he's not even worthy to scrub the toilets at the Harry Truman Presidential Library. The present state of the Democratic Party makes me think of what another American President once said about the political party that will soon control two of our three branches of government:

"I didn't leave the Democratic Party. They left me."

2 Harry Truman tried to nationalize the entire steel industry.  He fought it up to the Supreme Court, where he lost.

Truman isn't exactly an angel.

3 Truman, Hiroshima, and Oppenheimer -- all docudramas I've seen before and just watched again. I recommend all of them.

4 Truman is a lot more popular today than he was when he actually was President.  Although it seems unlikely now, maybe the same thing will happen to Bush.

You know those moments when you are almost too embarrassed to admit to something?

I swear, the first paragraph in and I was asking myself, "What the hell does Jim Carrey have to do with this?"

9 Gary Sinise is a well-known Rethuglican sympathiser. What's your point? Barack Obama was elected by more than 50% of voters. Just accept it and move on. Barack is a Lightworker, and piffling details like the Constitution and Bill of Rights cannot be allowed to impede his progress.

You people are frankly racists for even suggesting that Barack might not be the greatest President ever to have held the office. Shame on you.

10 Truman is pretty squishy domestically, but at least he was an American.  Thinking back to when I saw that movie the Rocketeer, makes me think of a line in the movie that went something like "I may not make an honest buck, but I'm an american, not some stooge for a two-bit nazi".

Dont know if someone mentioned this in an earlier blago thread, but dont forget he was the guy who said the state of illinois would pull their business from BoA if they didnt give in and pay those striking unionists at Republic Windows and Doors.

For the fraction of a penny that its worth, I thought the HBO Truman movie kicked ass, especially so because Gary Sinise turned in a home run performance.

It was untold lightyears better than the projectile vomit-inducing JFK.

It got me thinking about Milton Berle's: "I knew Doris Day before she was a virgin."

(You have to be a certain age to get this.)

So, Obama comes up from the rough and tumble Daley machine South - a place where corruption not only occurs but is demanded.  The politics is left or more left, and "pay for play" is the name of the game.  Grants, earmarks, graft and kickbacks - they probably have a statue of Huey Long down there next to the one of Al Capone.  Opponents are mysteriously erased; the rules are rewritten as needed, dead people vote, and Obama associates with more criminals and strange characters than the Star Wars’ bar scene.

From which emerges Mr. Clean, not to underestimate the amount of Lysol involved, nor the MSM effort.

I’m waiting for someone to say: "I knew Barak Obama before he was a virgin."

Posted by: Robert at December 09, 2008 10:36 PM (VotgB)

18 Just a tiny correction--The corrupt politician was Tom Pendergast.  He controlled the political machine in Kansas City and Jackson County generally, though not specifically Independence.  However, Independence is in Jackson County. (Independence is a suburb of KC...though people in Independence don't like to be reminded of that.)

23 Blago is an arrogant ass, he will appoint himself to the senate seat and resign as governor by the end of the week, if not first thing today.  He will then drag everyone down with him.

I wish I could belive this, but I have my doubts.  I'm afraid he'll pull a Susan McDougal and clam up waiting for The One to pardon him.  He send someone to see Obama and remind him that it would be in EVERYONE's best interest to keep Blago happy and silent.

... Oh how Mr. Obama must feel as he sits amongst the flame and ruin of the Blagojevich Governorship, his well tailored image in tatters and the diadem now fallen from his head. Yes, he will protest and ply his case before the court of public opinion, but alas the die has been cast, the veil lifted. No longer can his most ardent of admirers continue to revel in the unholy glow of their now tarnished idol as to do so would demonstrate their obstinacy as well as their fanaticism. Obama has now been revealed to be human, complete with all the loathsome vestiges that must accompany the mortal throughout this life. Never again can anyone be expected to believe that he is a politician above all politicians, oblivious all of the worldly temptations prone to that profession. No he is just like the other politicians; embroiled in incestuous political associations that were corrupt from their inception. Nay he is no god; he is a mere mortal just like all the rest and more imperfect than most...
