Re-reading the tape transcript, Blago could've easily gotten away with much of it had he not been so explicit (and stupid) in his extortion.

Instead of outright threatening to hold up the Cubs deal unless the critical editorial writers were fired, he needed only have a deputy call and express extreme displeasure with the editorial staff, then call an hour later and suggest he was having second thoughts on the Cubs deal.  They'd have gotten the message without the extortion being so blatant.

Hell, even if he called, mentioned the editorials, then said "but that's not really why I'm calling; what I'd like to discuss is the Cubs deal...".
