Illinois Governor Arrested

Breaking:

Illinois Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich and his Chief of Staff, John Harris, were arrested today by FBI agents on federal corruption charges alleging that they and others are engaging in ongoing criminal activity: conspiring to obtain personal financial benefits for Blagojevich by leveraging his sole authority to appoint a United States Senator; threatening to withhold substantial state assistance to the Tribune Company in connection with the sale of Wrigley Field to induce the firing of Chicago Tribune editorial board members sharply critical of Blagojevich; and to obtain campaign contributions in exchange for official actions both historically and now in a push before a new state ethics law takes effect January 1, 2009.

Blagojevich, 51, and Harris, 46, both of Chicago, were each charged with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and solicitation of bribery. They were charged in a two-count criminal complaint that was sworn out on Sunday and unsealed today following their arrests, which occurred without incident, announced Patrick J. Fitzgerald, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Robert D. Grant, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Both men were expected to appear later today before U.S. Magistrate Judge Nan Nolan in U.S. District Court in Chicago.

I guess Tony Rezko's songs must be pretty sweet.

Update - The story linked above is actually a release from the US Attorney's office, so it doesn't mention party. However, CNN gives us a chance to play "Name That Party!"

Just for fun, compare their curious silence on Blagojevich's partisan affiliation with how they covered Ted Stevens.

The Smoking Gun has a section of the criminal complaint against Blagojevich.

Amazing:

avaluablething.jpg

Nothing but class.

Here's another excerpt from the complaint that shows how irritated Blagojevich was with the president-elect. Astounding:

classyblago.jpg

Good grief. Illinois knows how to pick them.

Allah wonders whether 'Senate Candidate 1' was Valerie Jarrett, who Obama reportedly wanted for the seat.

Update [Slublog] Given the level of anger Blagojevich displays toward Obama in this complaint, my suspicion is that the president-elect gave his old buddy the cold shoulder after the election, and this scheme was Blagojevich's response to being shut out. Weapons-grade stupid.

Rezko Deal Under Scrutiny? - Drudge's blaring headline: "GRAND JURY SUBPOENAS ISSUED ON REZKO/OBAMA LAND DEAL." Men. Looks like that was from October. Drudge strikes again.

34 They never mention his party in any of the articles about him. In fact the only mention of the Democratic Party in the Chicago Tribune article is how concerned Democrats are about stopping corruption:

Blagojevich's comments came amid increasing concern by Democrats that the governor's pending appointment of a Senate successor may become politically tainted as a result of the investigations surrounding his administration.

36 FYI: Senator Dick Durbin, the crafty bastard that he is, came out a few weeks ago and pledged support to retain US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald for the 7th district.

This is very good news, but not the end of it.  The USAs still serve at the pleasure of the President, but having the senior senator from Illinois backing you is a strong sign of support.  Fitzgerald needs support from some Senators from Iowa, Wisconsin, and Indiana and it's likely Obama won't have the political capital to fire him.

The Feds might want to put 24hr surveillance on all their witnesses and suspects.  I'd be concerned about some of them taking their own lives.

Fox:

The arrest is part of a three-year probe of "pay-to-play politics" in the governor's administration. The criminal complaint by the FBI says each man was arrested on two charges of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and solicitation of bribery.

The charges also relate to allegations that Blagojevich and Harris schemed with previously convicted defendants and Obama associates Antoin Rezko, Stuart Levine, Ali Ata and others to arrange financial benefits in exchange for appointments to state boards and commissions, state employment, state contracts and access to state funds.

Also no mention of party affiliation

Can you imagine the outrage if a white guy gets the seat?

I suppose there are several lines of though on why the Feds arrested Blago today.  I'm surprised by Blago's continued arrogance when he really should have known his phones were tapped.  The Feds have had their eyes on him for at least the last three years.  Instead of retreating, he seems to have tried to consolidate some power and $$ before the hammer struck.   All I can figure out is that the Feds didnt want to deal with the possibility of Blago reaching the US Senate or intalling a corrupt puppet that they'd have to try and remove from office as well.

This seat may go unfilled for a very long time.  As of now, who'd want to touch it?   Anyone who expresses interested now may be look upon as suspect.

Thats my thought.

This we've known (as an ex-Illinois resident) for a long time now.  My first visit with his stupidity was Rod standing on the railroad tracks into Chicago swearing up and down that the military was *not* going to bring a few tank cars of napalm in to be processed at one of the local facilities to convert it into useful products other than napalm.

I can still hear my lab tech saying, "[expletive deleted], and yet the retard says nothing about the gasoline tankers doing 70 down the interstates around town every damned day".

"On November 10, Blagojevich, his wife, Harris, Governor General Counsel, Advisor B and other Washington-based advisors participated at different times in a two-hour phone call in which they allegedly discussed, among other things, a deal involving the SEIU. Harris said they could work out a deal with the union and the President-elect where SEIU could help the President-elect with Blagojevichs appointment of Senate Candidate 1, while Blagojevich would obtain a position as the National Director of the Change to Win campaign and SEIU would get something favorable from the President-elect in the future. Also during that call, Blagojevich agreed it was unlikely that the President-elect would name him Secretary of Health and Human Services or give him an ambassadorship because of all of the negative publicity surrounding him."

MSNBC wins the Guess That Party game:

Check this out: they don't mention Blagojevich's affiliation anywhere in their cover story, but oh, what's this? His corrupt predecessor's affiliation deserves bold print and a link!

A would-be reformer
Blagojevich took the chief executive's office in 2003 as a reformer promising to clean up former Gov. George Ryan's mess.

Ryan, a Republican, is serving a 6-year prison sentence after being convicted on racketeering and fraud charges. A decade-long investigation began with the sale of driver's licenses for bribes and led to the conviction of dozens of people who worked for Ryan when he was secretary of state and governor.

Keep your eye on the SEIU which in Illinois is the same thing as ACORN.

On November 12, Blagojevich spoke with SEIU Official who was in Washington. This conversation occurred about a week after Blagojevich had met with SEIU Official to discuss the Senate seat, with the understanding that the union official was an emissary to discuss Senate Candidate 1's interest in the Senate seat. During the November 12 conversation, Blagojevich allegedly explained the non-profit organization idea to SEIU Official and said that it could help Senate Candidate 1. The union official agreed to "put that flag up and see where it goes," although the official also had said he wasn't certain if Senate Candidate 1 wanted the official to keep pushing her candidacy. Senate Candidate 1 eventually removed herself from consideration for the open seat.

Barry will be hard-pressed to fire a USA looking into allegations that touch upon his Presidency even tangentially.  It would look like very un-hopenchangey.

The transition hasn't yet responded to questions about Rod Blagojevich's indictment, but the key question is whether the transition was talking to prosecutors, whether Obama and Valerie Jarrett knew that Blagojevich had offered her the Senate seat in exchange for a labor job, and how she, the transition, or SEIU handled the solicitation of a bribe. (The existence of a transcript suggests that the SEIU official -- Andy Stern, the president, had met with Blagojevich just before the election on the subject, though nobody is identified in the complaint -- was wearing a wire.)

One piece of speculation: Jarrett's abrupt withdrawal from consideration for the Senate seat suggests Obama's circle aware of the investigation.

It is clear from the complaint that Obama refused to offer Blagojevich anything for appointing Jarrett.

That some serious covering bullshit from Ben Smith at Politico. Why would Blag offer Jarret the job? Why would he even think she wants it? Obama/Jarret must have shown interest. If Stern was in on the investigation from the gitgo as Smith suggest then this is clearly entrapment.

What is more likely to have happened is Obama initiated the deal for to get Jarret then balked when Blag wanted more than just to be in Obama's good graces. So Obama and Stern went to the Feds to get Blag taken down. Quinn will surely do whatever Obama wants. I would not be surprised if Jarret gets the Senate seat now.

190 From the Washington Times:

A former Illinois bank official, now claiming whistleblower status, says bank officials replaced a loan reappraisal that he prepared for a Chicago property that was purchased by the wife of now-convicted felon Tony Rezko, part of which was later sold to next-door neighbor Barack Obama.

In a complaint filed Thursday in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Kenneth J. O'Conner said that his reappraisal of Rita Rezko's property was replaced with a higher one and that he was fired when he questioned the document.

191 What is more likely to have happened is Obama initiated the deal for to get Jarret then balked when Blag wanted more than just to be in Obama's good graces. So Obama and Stern went to the Feds to get Blag taken down. Quinn will surely do whatever Obama wants. I would not be surprised if Jarret gets the Senate seat now.

Yep, this is the likely scenario.

Jails and violence are what the hard boys from Chicago use.. whether they are Daleys or Obamas.

Selling US Senate appointments isn't new news, and really shouldn't surprise anyone. That is plain old fashioned graft. Forcing editorial board changes on big newspapers is the part people should be upset about.

If the Trib were an honest newspaper company, they would have taped the Governor's (D) threats themselves and made it a front page story every day for a month and parked channel 9s live cameras in front his home.

Congressional Democrats don't like him. The Republicans, save a couple of tools like Cellini, want nothing to do with him. Fitzgerald is providing a valuable service to the Democrats: He's removing the guy well before the next gubernatorial election. Blago is radioactive, and the longer he hangs around the worse he makes it for the Medicrats.

Being the paranoid conspiracy-minded type, I think Fitzgerald did this to protect somebody like Jessie Jackson Jr.  I suspect Jessie was Candidate #5 and as about to agree to give the consideration Blogo wanted in order to secure the Senate seat.

If Fitz waited to act, he would have had to also charge a powerful up-and coming black politician as well.

229 I'm not buying the Fitz is Golden here. It's total BS to believe Blag just cam up with this deal on his own from media reports Jarret wanted the job. The only people pushing Jarret was the SEIU. Why? She isn't related to them in any manner.

They were doing it at Obama's request. The SEIU came up with the deal without consulting Obama. When he heard the deal he probably was insulted, thinking he should just be able to name his successor, people don't dictate terms to Obama. It was too naked a deal too. Instead of taking it they went to Fitz. I mean the Democrats control everything in Illinois, state and federal. The judges were practically jumping through hoops for this investigation. This was a major push by all the Dems to get Blag out prior to the appointment. If they wanted to they could have dragged this out for years. It was the right thing to do but Fitz would never have done it so quickly without the SEIU coming forward. He knows what this is about.

Throughout the indictment Blag is responding to a deal, trying to get the most he can. Why would he be negotiating hard if he put the offer out?
He is responding to the offer from Stern and SEIU.
Blag is already on tape discussing this deal on 11/3, prior to any pushing of Jarret in the media. The pushing was to add legitimacy to a Jarret appointment, not solicit one. There had better be SEIU people going down with Blag that's for sure.

Those tainted bills could have been dealt with through the normal political process - their signing should not have driven the timing of the indictment.  Indeed, having the Gov sign them is a useful element in establising that the was a quid pro quo.

No, Fitz was protecting all of the other politicos who were gearing up to make their offers in the bidding war.  He had to limit the damage to a very unpopular politician, rather than actually making a difference in Illinois.

246 I think this provides an ample picture of Obama. He is clearly and undeniably a political opportunist. His migration to Chicago was done with eyes wide open. He knew corruption abounds there and that with that corruption comes easy advancement so long as you tithe to the corrupt powers that be. The fact that he managed to keep the muck at bay, only permeating the fuzzy edges, proves his deliberate scheming and political (synonym for "criminal" in my book) skills.

Have to wait and see how this shakes out, but my guess is that Obama tossed Blago under  the bus the second he was approached about the Senate seat for sale. He is where he is because he learned the Chicago Way adeptly and quickly.
