With the successful hit-to-kill test Friday of the interceptor we're planning to deploy in Poland (actually we tested the 3-stage version; Europe will get a simpler 2-stage interceptor), President-elect Obama should have a much harder time scrapping European missile defense:

If we can responsibly deploy missile defenses that would protect us and our allies we should – but only when the system works. We need to make sure any missile defense system would be effective before deployment. --- Barack Obama, July 16, 2007

This was the 8th successful intercept by our Ground-Based Interceptor (GBI), which is already operational and deployed in the US. As you read this, over 20 of these birds are in Alaskan silos and another handful in California on alert for any ICBM launch against the US --- hostile or accidental.

As GBI further cements its status as proven missile defense --- along with the wildly successful Aegis ships, THAAD and good ol' Patriot --- what "unproven missile defense systems" are left for Obama to eliminate?

Well, you already know about the Airborne Laser (ABL) --- it's at the top of Obama's hit list. But there's one crucial technology you've never heard of: the Multiple Kill Vehicle (MKV) --- PREPARE TO DIE multiple times (bonerific video after the break):

The middle part of that video is ACTUAL test footage from last week, not part of the CGI eye-candy that bookends it. As Ace might say, "Unnnnhhhh.... uugghghhhh...."

While still in development, and by definition "unproven," MKV is vital to our ability to deal with ICBM countermeasures. Today, each GBI lofts a single kill vehicle --- one KV for each warhead and each countermeasure. That's a shitload of KV's and interceptors, an extremely hairy and costly solution. MKV will be a huge force multiplier.

The countermeasure whine is the last remaining talking point critics use to attack missile defense, and MKV addresses it head on.

"Attack missile defense"? Am I implying that missile defense critics are on the same side as those who would actually, you know, "attack" missile defense?

2 Every time I see this kinda thing I'm reminded of what Gorbechev said after the fall of the Soviet Union about western technology. He said that the effect on the Soviets of our constant designing and building more advanced weapons was that it gave them a feeling that no matter what they did, they always feared that: "the West would pull a rabbit out of a hat." 8 The key word is "accidental". No single missile launch against us will ever be "on purpose". The existence of an ABM system is going to elicit a proxy "accidental" on purpose launch that will actually be a probing for capability attack...but our main enemies. Glad it works, but will be more impressed when it has a forward velocity of say 4000 mph and tracks multiple targets. As for Obama, I suspect he is going to backtrack on this as well. A decent missle defense is a cost-effective solution. Every time he has talked to Bush, he has come back visibly somewhat shaken from certain realities he has learned. And subsequently changed his stances.

Iran is practicing launching from cargo ships for a reason. The NOrks are crazy and have already test fired a design (the test failed a couple of years ago, but one has to assume if their engineers can eat they are working on it) with the range to hit us.

Ultimately the presence of a defense capability presents a barrier to entry for anyone else wanting to get in the game. If your going to invest in a missile/nuke program - it's meaningless until you can build nukes and launch vehicles faster then we can build interceptors.

It also forces Russia and China to continue to invest in a capability that we can always outmatch. Once the system is in place and effective, the Russians and Chinese will never be sure how many interceptors we have, or if 3 ABLs are parked at Groom Lake, or we really have20 MKV per interceptor, etc... On our side, we can invest in a smaller, continually modernized strategic force - without have to rely on numbers (ie. $$$$) for an effective counterforce.

I could go on for days before getting to the morality of MAD. Obama will make some noise to keep his constituents from having aneuyisms; but it works, the treat is real, and politically will be impossible to stop. I expect a bigger role for GD and Boeing at the expense of NG - but no real changes.
