7 This is a really great story, almost (but not quite) as important as the first black president, especially considering the whole Vietnam War thing. And it seems like he has an amazing story. And how about all the republican victories in LA? That could be a real testing ground for a Republican resurgence.

11 I suspect he'll lose in two years when a non-indicted democrat runs against him, but congratulations to Mr. Cao.  Also good news from the shreveport area where the Rep. also won.  That's a conservative district but the dems had a very strong candiate so it could've easily gone the other way.

Cao won, but I don't think his victory is evidence of much--except maybe that Louisianians eventually tire of crooked politicians who provide little entertainment.  I don't think Cao has much of a shot holding the seat in 2010, but stranger things have happened.

Dr. John Fleming's victory in Louisiana's 4th Congressional District (a Republican hold) is probably better evidence that Republicans have stopped hemorrhaging congressional seats.  It would have been a bad sign if Republicans had lost that seat,

I'm disappointed that Fleming only won by 365 votes in a +7 R/D district; the Chambliss win is about ten times more satisfying and of course, 100 times more important.  However, we'll take a win any way we can get it.  Congrats to Cao, it seemed to analogous to the Alaska Senate race where the crook loses by only a small margin in an area that is extremely favorable to him.

3-0 since November 4th in elections; it'll be 4-0 after Virginia in 2009.  I am predicting that we at the very least, will hold these guys off from 60 in 2010.  We just have too many seats to defend to make a big push into their margins, though if Reid annoints Franken, that could be an issue we push nationwide.

Posted by: Truth Meter at December 07, 2008 12:37 AM (plYMr)

29

Acknowledged.  But is there anything else in this that we can leverage off of?  11% of this district could identify with a particular race. Cao beat the 60% from an 11% platform.  Surely there is a thread in this that can be pulled and used against the Murthas/Franks/Watts (he being my target)/Dodd's of the world.

And as for the $90k, that twit in CA with the three forclosed-upon homes retains her seat.  Rangel will mostl likely retain his (or be replaced but another supplicant).

Is there anything else that can be gleened and used elsewhere?

34 I'm delighted he's gone.  We might have gotten rid of him sooner had Harry Lee (Sheriff of the neighboring parish) not endorsed him because he was pissed off that Jefferson's opponent slammed the police in Spike Lee's nasty little propaganda piece.

But don't make too much of Cao's victory; New Orleans hasn't suddenly developed a huge desire for good government or gone conservative.  Turnout was really low because the weather is cold - about 65k votes.  (Well, cold to New Orleanians, not to normal people.)  And even then, it was fairly close, considering what a scumbag Jefferson is.  50% - 47%. (http://tinyurl.com/5f7djs) He beat him by about 2,000 votes.  That's just sad.  Still... I'll take it and run.

Mmm, looking at the precinct data, I doubt that a significant number of people who voted for Jefferson pay much in income taxes.

I think Truth Meter's comparison to the Alaska senate race is quite apt.

36 I love Jefferson Parish so much. My home parish put Cao over the top and there was much rejoicing.

Posted by: MFn G I M P at December 07, 2008 01:09 AM (5GvGf)

37

We shouldn't take much of anything from the New Orleans race just as Alaskan dems shouldn't take anything of Begich beating Stevens by 3,000 votes.  If I were Jindal, I'd crow about the Cao race rather than crow about the Fleming race.  He gave both guys endorsements, so he can take credit for the two victories though the New Orleans win is much more impressive than the race in LA-4 which should have been won by a much bigger margin (my prediction was at least 6 points given what happened in the Chambliss race).

The Stop 60 message will be just as strong in 2010 but at some point, I'm still waiting on one of our "stars" to develop a coherent message that's pro-conservative rather than an anti-dem message.  We may not need one but we'll need one for 2012 rather than "I'm not Barack Obama" which may be enough given that the central theme to Obama's campaign was "I'm not George Bush."  The country will be pining for Bush after four years of the One.

Posted by: Truth Meter at December 07, 2008 01:11 AM (plYMr)

38 I'm not sure Jindal is going to crow too much.  Jindal was one of the most reliable people we had on illegal immigration when he was in the House.  Cao is an immigration lawyer.  But we were going to have shamnesty anyway, so it's not like that really makes a difference.

Posted by: Laura at December 07, 2008 01:15 AM (I0ZYx)

39 Is this fallout from Katrina? Did a lot of lower class and welfare-dependent people (classes which have been basically been bought and paid off by the Democratic Party) flee Louisiana and not return, thus making the state more red?

See, I'm thinking that in normal circumstances, Jefferson gets re-elected by a comfortable margin. I've never heard of Louisiana voters having a problem with corrupt public officials, so there's got to be another explanation for Jefferson getting the heave-ho.

Posted by: OregonMuse at December 07, 2008 01:16 AM (bMJ2V)

40

We have a long way to go, but I think government in New Orleans has improved since Katrina.  (Don't say it couldn't get worse because every time I thought that in the past, things somehow did get worse.)  While Nagin continues to find new ways to demonstrate his incompetence, the City Council has improved greatly and almost seems competent; the new DA should be decent; and the School Board seems less incompetent.

And if Obama keeps Letten as US Attorney for the Eastern District, improvement should continue.

Posted by: Punktillious at December 07, 2008 01:18 AM (xC3/e)

41

Cao is pretty socially conservative from what I've read; he was endorsed by Family Research Council, so he may be a Huckabee-type which is better than Jefferson regardless of what you think about the Huckster.

Here's a question, Sanford claimed that 14 of the republican 21 governors agreed with his position on Obama's stimulus bribe.  7 went to go beg Obama for bribe money.  We know Arnold, Douglas, and Crist are among the seven.  I guess we can put Rell and the Hawaii governor (though she didn't attend) in that category.  So that leaves two beggers; is Bobby one of them considering that he was talking about discussing highway funding with Obama?

Posted by: Truth Meter at December 07, 2008 01:19 AM (plYMr)

42 Gotta point out that despite the fact that Anh Cao is the first American of Vietnamese ancestry in Congress, but as a Republican the AP decided not to even show his picture with the article.  Instead they used a "sympathy photo" of Freezer Willie hugging his supporters.  Nothing like the celebration of history firsts that accompanied the Obamatroid's victory.

Posted by: DaMav at December 07, 2008 01:23 AM (X2qWM)

43

The demographics change in Orleans Parish meant that Cao won by basically breaking even there.  As noted by MFn G I M P, Cao won the race because he won the gerrymandered parts of Jefferson Parish.  Previously, Jefferson racked up so many votes in Orleans Parish that his victory was guaranteed.

Posted by: Punktillious at December 07, 2008 01:24 AM (xC3/e)

44 Joseph Cao seems like exactly who the district needs.

He came here form Vietnam as a child, earned three degrees, worked his axx off, rebuilt twice down there in NOLA, and wants to get shxt done for the people, unlike Dollar Bill.

45 Is this fallout from Katrina?

To some extent.  (Sorry, Houston!)  Overall, the city's population is still below pre-Katrina and the demographics have changed some.

In all fairness, Punktillious, last time Jefferson was up for election, his New Orleans votes were down and Jeff. parish made up the difference, thanks to Harry Lee's endorsement.  I loved Harry; always voted for him, but I was some pissed off about that.

Posted by: Laura at December 07, 2008 01:39 AM (I0ZYx)

46 However you want to parse it, Anh Cao is a straight-up conservative, in the mold of Jindal, and the victories of 3 conservative Republicans in a row, after Obama and the Dem's November 4 performance should be a huge news story.

Well, regardless, we'll take the reality, with or without the press coverage

I don't care if Cao won by one vote.  I was so tired of seeing Willie's smug face on the television that I wanted to puke.  If nothing else, this at least gives the impression that we are not quite as bass-ackwards as we were.  How many of the Jeffs are either indicted or under investigation? I think the local guy on 99.5, John Osterland (sic), has the total at five. I think.

Who knows, Cao could get in there and do some good.  Let's give the guy a chance!

Regardless, thanks Jefferson Parish because Holy Cao, Dollar Bill lost.

49 I don't know for certain if this was part of the stimulus or not But Rep. Gov. of Carcieri Rhode Island went begging to The Emperor for money. The newspaper played it up as it being to cover the debt. of the state and that it would be coming.

Posted by: Jody C. at December 07, 2008 02:22 AM (B/Y39)

50 Karen Carter made - well, tried to make - a big flap over the bridge incident with Spike Lee; claiming Jeff Par deputies were raaacist for not letting crowds cross the bridge to the westbank.  Enough got over to loot and burn Oakwood mall, remember, and there were no shelters or anyplace for people to go anyway - at that point the fastest way out of town was to be evac'd from downtown.  Anyway, Harry Lee wasn't about to tolerate being called a racist by Karen Carter and Spike Lee, so he supported Jefferson and handed him the win out of spite.  Which, mad as I was, I still thought was funny - conservative white voters re-elected the corrupt, liberal black Congressman at the behest of an angry Chinese guy.  Louisiana politics at it's finest.

Posted by: Laura at December 07, 2008 02:34 AM (I0ZYx)

51  Bottom line. NY Hevesi, NJ Corzine these guys won elections while under indictment. Then their party picked their successors. The system is gamed. Coruption is smiled upon in DNC land. From the few to the many. Ah, union votes galore.

The Republican won here because there were no Obama coattails to hang onto and there was no McLame anchor to drag him under. In short, the hurricane won this election by delaying it.

60 Jefferson was heard to be weeping into his frozen broccoli, actually $250,000 in hijacked highway funds, begging for another chance from his frozen peas, actually $300,000 in detoured Medicaid money, and considering a frozen daiquiri, actually $500,000 bribe from the Teamsters that Cold Cash has kept "on Ice" for his retirement in the Bahamas.
Soon as he defrosts his retirement fund, he'll remove himself to the islands and never be seen again, mark my words. The Dems have their own freezers in every home I bet, and if they go pogo-sticking after Jefferson, they'll get a pogo-stick up their own hind-quarters in return.
Not that they'd ever expect honesty from one of theirs to begin with...look at Teddy Kennedy, the Massachusetts State Vehicle Safety and Swimming Commissar. He's never been held to account and never will be.
Jefferson seems par for the course with these turds. Glad he's going.

63 I think people are wrong to be dissapointed by the narrow Republican margin in LA-4.  I'd say a win by any margin is a good sign.  The Dem had been the DA in Caddo Parrish (Shreveport) for years.  That's not only the biggest county but also the media center, so he had huge name ID.  And a prosecutor usually gets to come off as a conservative.  Plus I think the Republican primary got a little nasty which cost Fleming some votes.  This sitauation was pretty close to Wicker's old district in Mississippi, which is even more conservative but we managed to lose in a special election.  In two years Fleming should be safe - he'll have much better name ID and the Dems have probably used up their best possible candiate.

65 Let's not forget that a Republican has not held this seat since January 1891 - 118 years ago. The CPVI (Cook Partisan Voting Index) had this district at D+28, one of the "safest" in the nation.

But, unlike the 4th district, this one is well outside recount parameters (almost 3 percentage points). The 4th district had the GOP holding that seat by just 356 votes (0.38%) in a region that went 56-44 for McCain.

Posted by: Drumwaster at December 07, 2008 12:12 PM (Ymor3)

66 If Anh Cao was a Democrat, and Jefferson a corrupt Republican, you can be sure the MSM would have plastered Cao's photo on every story they ran. Also, you would have heard many MSM proclamations of what a historic first it is that a person of Vietnamese descent was elected to congress.

Kind of like when Jindal was elected governor. You would think that the first Indian-American to achieve that high a level of elected office would have merited at least *some* notice from the Almighty Arbiters of Racial Tolerance, but the MSM's reaction was, basically, ho hum.

Posted by: OregonMuse at December 07, 2008 12:22 PM (bMJ2V)

67 One factor that's being discussed down here right now is that many of the blacks in his district thought Jefferson had already won when he beat Helena Moreno in the primary back in November.
That's the problem with gerrymandering districts to ensure you have a majority of ignorant shitbags with their hands out, waiting for Sugar Daddy to come home with the candy. The downside is they don't grok terms like "primary" and "general election."

Good for Cao and the Vietnamese in New Orleans East. They rebuilt their community after Katrina quickly, without complaint, and without government assisstance. It is fitting that one of theirs is in a leadership role for the district.
