Obama Adds Nuance to Promise to Withdraw From Iraq

Question: Now that their president is prosecuting an illegal war of choice, will the chickenhawks on the left sign up to fight en masse?

On the campaign trail, Senator Barack Obama offered a pledge that electrified and motivated his liberal base, vowing to “end the war” in Iraq.

But as he moves closer to the White House, President-elect Obama is making clearer than ever that tens of thousands of American troops will be left behind in Iraq, even if he can make good on his campaign promise to pull all combat forces out within 16 months.

“I said that I would remove our combat troops from Iraq in 16 months, with the understanding that it might be necessary — likely to be necessary — to maintain a residual force to provide potential training, logistical support, to protect our civilians in Iraq,” Mr. Obama said this week as he introduced his national security team.

Publicly at least, Mr. Obama has not set a firm number for that “residual force,” a phrase certain to become central to the debate on the way ahead in Iraq, though one of his national security advisers, Richard Danzig, said during the campaign that it could amount to 30,000 to 55,000 troops. Nor has Mr. Obama laid out any timetable beyond 16 months for troop drawdowns, or suggested when he believes a time might come for a declaration that the war is over.

In the meantime, military planners are drawing up tentative schedules aimed at meeting both Mr. Obama’s goal for withdrawing combat troops, with a target of May 2010, and the Dec. 31, 2011, date for sending the rest of American troops home that is spelled out in the new agreement between the United States and the Iraqi government.

That status-of-forces agreement remains subject to change, by mutual agreement, and Army planners acknowledge privately that they are examining projections that could see the number of Americans hovering between 30,000 and 50,000 — and some say as high as 70,000 — for a substantial time even beyond 2011.

It's astonishing to me that a political party and the entire media could so dishonestly and recklessly campaign against winning a vital war. I'm not shocked by their current position; I'm dumbfounded by their old one.

How does the media begin to walk back its insistent demands we deliberately lose the war just to humiliate George Bush and the Republican Party?

How does Keith Olbermann (and his ilk) begin to spin this?

Do they dare admit they were wrong all along?

2 Besides, this is not really support of an illegal war. Everybody in the world will lay down their weapons soon and carry flowers since I have been elected.
The continuing presence of US troops in Iraq should now be seen as an effort to save military jobs. How many jobs have I saved already?
Man, I'm better than even I thought.

5 So his promise was withdrawing combat troops only and not residual troops. So do combat troops turn into residual when they return to base from a patrol?  If combat breaks out when we only have residual troops there will they have to be replaced with combat troops? Those are rhetorical/joke questions right? Or can you really not have learned by now that being a power hungry liberal means never having to say you are sorry or admit being wrong.

They'll just play through as if nothing happened for now. Then they'll start giving Obama credit for cleaning up the mess and give him credit for the future success of Iraq. Hell, Tom Freedman and others are already starting.

11 A better question might be: Under an Obama presidency will our West Point grads stop opting out of the army as a career at the historically high levels (50% at the first chance) that they are now ? Gates as SOD has already said he will begin taking troops out at an increased pace, and besides didn't we last week declare that the war was over and that we had won ?

Also, if one more person yells at me, I'm leaving.

13 Honest question:  Aren't the residual troops their to, you know, support the combat troops?  If their are no combat troops, what the hell do you need troops to "support?"  Nuance, I guess.

It's always sad when trolls show suck a lack of creativity:

From Confederate Yankee, last year:
Might be a little difficult to find the Army captains on active duty, the Army is having a really hard time retaining that group. The number of West Point grads optining out of the Army at the earliest opportunity is the highest in decades. Posted by: Roy at December 04, 2008 03:38 PM (cB77O)

17 From Blackfive, earlier this year:

I am more concerned with the extremely low retention rates of West Point grads, than I am in a lack of volunteers from elite Ivy League schools, although of course BOTH show the same lack of support. But of course it is always easier and safer to take pot shots at a liberal institution than at anything to do with our military. The last figures compiled show 46 % of the West Point class opting out at their first chance or within 6 months of the earliest opportunity.

19 Blackfive again, earlier this year:

NBC is also reporting that they spoke with the Captain a West Point grad and that the main points as reported were correct.
Since more than 50% of West Point grads opt out of the Army at the earliest time possible (5 years) it would be interesting to hear if he is still in the Army. West Point retention rates are at an historic low.

You go to war with the citizens that you have, not with the citizens that you want.
There has been little national support for this war from either those that vote Democratic or from those who vote Republican.
Recruiting goals have only been able to be met by ever increasing numbers of waivers (30%+) 10% foreign born non citizens, and financial incentives.
Over 50% of the West Point grads opt out of the Army at their first chance (5th year)

West Point's reaction to these stories?

The United States Military Academy, better known as West Point, disputes that figure, calling it: "Hogwash. Gibberish. Misinformation."

Spokesman Col. Bryan Hilferty continued, "Actually, only 40 percent of the class of 2002 has left active duty. And the implication that this is an alarmingly high number is also false. The attrition of the class of 2002 is just at the 10 year average and lower than the classes of 2001 and 2000."

35 Biden was more right than even he knew.
What does Obama do if India and Pakistan go to war?
There would be no way for Afghanistan to be neutral on the issue.
Karzai would have to back Pakistan even if only by word.
There's no way the US could back anyone except India and Russia is already trying to sell military equipment to India (probably Pakistan too).
His best bet would try to be neutral but I don't think that would make him look like much of a leader or presidential.

I don't get it, Obama has gone back on just about every promise he made as a candidate. Now I know all politicians do it, but this has to be some kind of record for the President-elect (if that's what you call him, since the Electoral College hasn't met yet, but who's counting, really, I mean actually he's been the President-elect since at least 2006).

And, even though promise after promise has disappeared in a puff of unicorn farts and nuance, the whackos in the media and on the left who supported his ascendence to emperor are just nodding their heads in agreement with his sageness and wisdom.

It's going to be fun watching the Democrats lickspittles in the media contort themselves into pretzels as Obama's actions and policies put the lie to their coverage the last eight years.  The only thing that can save Olbermann, Williams, Couric, Mathews, Gibson, Friedman, Sullivan, Sockpuppet and the rest from looking like total liars is the banning of google and Lexis/Nexis.

It should be fun drudging up the Left's hysterical freakouts about oh, so many issues these last eight years and comparing them to their current much more nuanced views.  Patriot Act?  Not so bad.  Guantanamo?  We could live with it.  Separate court system for international terrorist?  100% constitutional.  50 or 60 thousand troops in Iraq?  Not about oil at all.  International terrorism?  Real threat.  Budget defecits?  Necessary evil.  Rampant corruption?  Doesn't reflect on the party as a whole just the individual actors.  The list goes on and on.

Ok, let me get this right. Troops levels have been about 130,000 in Iraq. Obama promised a 16 month pull out with a residual force to combat terrorists. But to Obama a residual force could be upwards of 70,000 troops. That doesn't really meet any definition of residual.

The Left believes that the are terrorists there due to our military presence, but Obama promised to maintain a military presence.

Somebody needs to ask him if he plans to keep that residual force there indefinitely or does he have a date certain pullout. Would he keep the troops there 100 years to combat terrorists?
