The Myth-Making on Prop 8 Begins

Associated Press headline: "Poll: Calif gay marriage ban driven by religion."

Reality: Pretty much every other demographic group in the poll voted yes on Prop. 8 as well.

Differences in support for Proposition 8 are evident across party lines, with three in four Republicans (77%) voting yes and two in three Democrats (65%) voting no, while independents were more divided (52% yes, 48% no). The measure was supported by a majority of those without a college education (62%), while a majority of those with a college degree voted no (57%). Evangelical or born-again Christians (85%) are far more likely than others (42%) to have voted yes. Whites (50%) are less likely than Latinos (61%) to have voted yes; 57 percent of Latinos, Asians and blacks combined voted yes (sample sizes are too small to report Asians and blacks separately). Voters who supported Obama (30%) were far less likely than those who supported McCain (85%) to vote yes. Support for Proposition 8 increases with age (43%) for ages 18–34; 50% for ages 35–54, yes; 56% for ages 55 and older) and declines with income.
So it looks like the only groups where a majority voted 'no' on Prop 8 were Democrats, those with a college education, and those aged 18-34.

Misleading headline aside, the AP story at least mentions the other demographics who voted in favor of the measure. If you only read the LA Times' blog entry on this poll, you'd come away thinking the proposition passed solely on the strength of Christian and Republican votes.

If I were gay those stats right there would kinda bug me, as it appears that we may have reached peak tolerance levels. And the decline in income is almost a certainty in Obamma's America.

That is always a fun thing isn't it.  You know I'm sure they have worked up a response to that.  Probably along the lines of "he doesn't really mean that he just says that to get elected, because of all the stupid people out there."

I wonder if the thought had ever crossed their mind that the stuff he has said that they do like could possibly have been bull shitting so they would elect him.  Probably not.

14 "At no point in time, before or after the election, did we have a majority of Californians saying they supported gay marriage," Baldassare said. "My takeaway from this is that until there is a major shift in public opinion one way or another, it's going to be another issue where voters are deeply divided."

First of all why do they keep doing polls on this anyway? We had had the most definitive poll imaginable, an election, and every single time....EVERY SINGLE TIME......voters have rejected calling the union of anything but a man and woman marriage. Think about that. Every single time this issue has been put to a vote of the people they have endorsed the definition of marriage as an opposite sex union. Small wonder considering marriage is that and always has been.
America is not "deeply divided" on this issue and never has been.
How exactly can they be "deeply divided" if it would take a "major shift in public opinion" to change it?

This poll is even more of a joke when you take into consideration that Prop 8 passed in one of the most liberal states in the union in a year when liberals have never been more motivated. Is there a liberal in California that didn't vote? I doubt it, yet voter turnout was down. Who was it that didn't show up in California? Do you think it's likely they would have voted against Prop 8 if they had? I don't. They were probably as equally sure that Prop 8 would fail as they were that McCain would lose California and stayed home.

Actually with the exit polling they did. If the respondents were married they voted yes on Prop 8, across all demographics, ALL. The same held true if they had children. They don't like to mention this as it kills the whole "Young people have a more open attitude and things will change" meme.

You beat me to it Dave.

Republicans and Christians have absolutely no clout in California.

The only way for a measure to die in California is if a majority of Democrats vote against it.

PS: any California conservatives who want to make a difference in the next election should move to Ohio, Pennsylvania or Florida.  We need to reposition our troops to win the next battle.

Nope.  Whenever I point this out to my queer friends, I get told how they're not going to sit there and be quiet and blah blah blah blah blah.  Hell, I'm on record as not caring at all about gay marriage and I'm about to flip to being actively against it just to piss off the activists.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, these tantrums are going to provoke a response.  My response is to disown the entire gay movement.  Hell, they think I don't exist anyway, so no great loss to me.  Not.  In.  My.  Name.  But it doesn't matter because when the gay baiting and name calling and general bashing start, I'm still caught in the cross fire.

I am sure that all my fans know that Barack just had to say these things so that he could get elected.  Once he's elected, he'll fix everything so that it's just fine.  You want women's rights, he's got a plan for that.  You want the traditional family, he supports that as well.  He has said he has some reservations about too much emphasis on rational discourse and critical judgment, but I am sure we call find a way around our disagreements on that as well.

I'm with Alex--as an issue, I've got more of a live-and-let-live approach to the gay marriage thing, and if the proponents of it showed a bit more reserve and maturity, I could be inclined at least not to actively oppose it. I really can't get too upset or interested about how two guys construct their life together. But the whole chip-on-the-shoulder resentful attitude really makes me want to see them punished in the voting booth for their obnoxiousness and for foisting the argument on those of us who don't have any skin in the game, if you'll pardon the expression...

People don't like getting bigfooted.  Hypothetical, lets say you are an excellent singer, but you appear on the Celine Dion Show (SNL reference) and start to sing, but you are overriden by Cenine at every big note.

Lets say You hit a tripple and are pulled out for a pinch runner.

Lets say you tied the game in the last too minutes and in the red zone, and are replaced by schecky greenburg, the only jew on your football team who was trained as an equipment manager, but ends up suiting up to make the last hand off.

Lets say you are an all state wrestler, 2 years in a row, and are told to LOSE in  a robbin dual elimination tournament because the uncoordinated idiot lost his first match the the very person you beat just the match before?

Would you do it?

NO! self respecting person would.

BTW the wrestling analogy is TRUE, after I beat my "coaches" golden boy, because I wouldn't lose to him, he was a joke! he shouldn't even have been ther, after I beat his golden boy?

My coach left.

My coach was my ride.  My coach DROVE me to the tournament (which I won BTW) but he didn't care, we had 4 sectional winners, and something like 15 qualifiers for regionals, but my coach LEFT me there.

I went into too many matches, not knowing where my coach was, I didn't give a fuck about him coaching me, I need a fucking ride home!!

So I humiliated the poor kid, straight points, did the walk thing, cuz I wanted to get off the mat and find my goddamn coach so I could get a ride.

He left me.

I was 13!!!

If I disobey him I DESERVE as a 13 year old to be abandoned about 40 miles from home, Oh btw my coach was mexican, and so was his golden boy, who SUCKED!!!!  No, he SUCKED!!!!!  SUCKED!!!!!!!   If he didn't suck why did I make state that year, and the following two? and he didn't even qual secional?  HE SUCKED!!!!

But talent is besides the point, My coach was MY RIDE!!!!

And he LEFT ME.

THANK GOD!!!  the light heavy guy (I think that's 155-169) had a big lineup like me, and his mom was there and we found eachother, actually, she found me crying on the phone, between my matches, cuz I couldn't get ahold of my parents, and she said she'd drive me home, and she tried to cover for my coach but we both knew she was lying.  I wasn't a stupid kid.

Her son was in his last match (and he was a hell of a wrestler, his name was sam burnell, badass fucker, and the oddly enough the only other Marine I know of from my "class" from school.) and I got called to my QUARTER, (I had 3 matches left, 135 is a dense group, most of them older)

I won, it was a quick win.  the next was more arduous, and even though my friends mother was conscripted into watching me, she was one enthusiastic bitch, even though she kept forgeting my name, and same basicaly just hit the mat and yelled "YES YES YES!!!"

and the final was a joke, I actually made a point of hurting the poor kid to punish my coach "piemental"  thats not his real name, but Hey, who cares, he only affects formative experiences for young men.

Mom and Sam's mom were good phone friends after that, (this is the year before I went into highschool) and I learned based on moms hushed words on the phone with miss burnell, and dads uproarious outrage, that position means nothing.

I was a KID! and my COACH! he was in fact my TEACHER, he was in fact my GUARDIAN, thats why mom and dad had to sign the shit they did for me to even go to the meat, and I was ABANDONED! by the coach, by the teacher, and it took a mom to not just drive me home, but to cheer me as I was the last from our/her sons class to compete that night.

Mom was so appologetic to her, but she was just as proud as mom or dad would have been had mom or dad been there.

2 of the golds were wone by her boy, and by me, the one she cheered on.

She was one proud mommy.

I never wrestled for the school again, and my mother refused to support any of the school wrestlers, and she caught shit, because mom said she wouldn't say "yay" meanwhile all the other mothers had no problem with abandoning a kid about an hour away from home.

Mom and dad filed complaints, and dad even sorta kinda threatened the vice principle when it got big, and you know what happened?

NOTHING!?

The education system the next overpriced poorly produced union.

BTW, this isn't a "No Shit."  this is an absolutely true story.

THAT EXACTLY happened to me.

Well, think of it like those elections where they Dems lose close contests and then they force recount after recount until the Democrat candidate wins, then all recounting is brought to an immediate halt and the results are quickly cast in stone.

That's what they're trying to get. As soon as the gay rights supporters get the first poll where a majority of responses agree with them, that poll will then become the gold standard, and it will be used as evidence by them for years to come.

Marriage is, even at an intuitive level, between a man and a woman.  Andrew Sullivan calling his partner "husband" makes me nauseous.  My partner is my partner, not a husband.  Why they think it is important to destroy a concept that has such deep culture meaning is beyond me.  I sure wish they would use some percentage of their brain cells, some degree of understanding, some amount of compasssion, and some understanding of our own culture and get on with their lives.

Most statistics put the total homosexual population at 1-2%.

So all of society must bow down to these 0.01% or else we are evil, evil fascist meanies. Never mind that anyone can say they are married. I just married my pet rock and was recognized by the Church of Pet Rocks. Merry Christmas.

Socialists and communists do not support the traditional upbringing of children. They preferred the State took over this function.

It's difficult to give up the one thing that you believe "defines" you.  The constant cries of "YOU HATE ME BECAUSE I'M GAY!" get really tiresome, especially when so many gays go out of their way to give us reasons to dislike them that have nothing to do with their sexuality.

I may have mentioned this before, but I had a friend of 20 years who came out of the closet.  We remained friends, but all of a sudden, I could no longer simply disagree with him anymore.  I now disagreed with him because he was gay and I was a Republican and therefore I hated him because he was gay.

It got so insane that we are no longer friends, as it seemed like he needed me to hate him, and did what ever he could to make that happen, simply to justify his own victim-hood.
