| 2,700 Year Old Stash of Marijuana Unearthed By ArchaeologistsResearchers say they have located the world's oldest stash of marijuana, in a tomb in a remote part of China. The cache of cannabis is about 2,700 years old and was clearly ``cultivated for psychoactive purposes," rather than as fibre for clothing or as food, says a research paper in the Journal of Experimental Botany. The 789 grams of dried cannabis was buried alongside a light-haired, blue-eyed Caucasian man, likely a shaman of the Gushi culture, near Turpan in northwestern China. The extremely dry conditions and alkaline soil acted as preservatives, allowing a team of scientists to carefully analyze the stash, which still looked green though it had lost its distinctive odour. "To our knowledge, these investigations provide the oldest documentation of cannabis as a pharmacologically active agent," says the newly published paper, whose lead author was American neurologist Dr. Ethan B. Russo. Also found: the oldest known hacky sack and oldest known Steven Wright comedy album. This does not surprise me since man has been using psychotropic drugs since the beginning. I would imagine tobacco and marijuana would have been among the first to be developed and used.

It is in fact a God-given seed.....the most theraputical and most tested drug in the history of man. I am sure that Jesus smoke marijuana. There are zero deaths recorded from this drug unlike the thousands of year from alcohol. Jesus was a smart guy unlike people who run around today who take all these addictive , man-made with bad side effects drugs we have on the market today. Did you know that if marijuana was legalized it would replace about 80 drugs on the market today. Not only do these prescription, man-made drugs give us bad side effects but some of us spend our life savings on them. Yes...considering Jesus was a extremely bright individual....I'm sure if was smart enough to use the seed his father gave him. After all....who is smarter, GOD or these dimwit doctors who want our lifesavings. Posted by: laurie at December 03, 2008 10:58 AM (DB5PE) 37

Did you know that marijuana was legal going back 2 thousand years ago and it was not until 1938 or so it was made illegal by lobbyists who for political and capitalistic gains (competition having something to do with a newely invented paper making machine). I won't name the family.....but there is a rich family out there who was behind the "reefer madness" movie made to help get marijauna made illegal who misrepresented the effects of marijuana and made it seem as an LSD type of hallucinative drug. They all lobbied congress to have it made illegal. If you look at the literature in the netherlands and other places where it is legal you all just may learn information that our politicians in American never want us to know. The US governement has us brainwashed that it is a BAD drug. It also definitely benefits all the pharmaceutical companies for it to be illegal. Did you also know that marijuana has more than 250 industrial purposes and would help with land erosion if planted Posted by: laurie at December 03, 2008 11:08 AM (DB5PE) 39

How exactly does this "Dr." know that the pot is the shamans. Was the body found wearing a tie-dyed Dead shirt? Did the tomb have a "Gas, Grass or Ass, Nobody rides for free" bumper sticker? Was the shaman's watch set to 4:20? Was it Carl's Backyard Bent?

There is no drug out there on the market that has been tested more throughout time than marijuana has. So far...they can not come out with any substantial cons...and there are so many pros. Oh and by the way.....alcohol is the gateway drug.....not marijuana. All teenagers drink first......as ALL their parents do. I guess that is why everyone thinks alcohol is okay...CAUSE EVERYONE IN THE WORLD DRINKS. It is amazing to be all the alcohol drinkers out there who always try to debate the use of marijuana. "Yes all the conservative republican politicians who support big pharmaceutical companies will always try to make you believe its a bad drug and that everyone is going to die die die if they smoke it. Pot is not physically addictive.
It is psychologically addictive. I have in my immediate family more than one person addicted to it. And not one of them is a teenager. Having said all that, I don't give a care if it's legalized. Alcohol is addictive as hell, and I love it. Posted by: Cathy (in Chicago) at December 03, 2008 01:00 PM (3xgoE) 66
I haven't smoked pot since I was a teenager. There are certainly worse things out there--many of which are legal. I stopped because I realized I was trying to substitute reality, and ducking reality was unhealthy on numerous levels. Sadly, Laurie's posts have confirmed just how detached from reality I could have become.

I really hate it when someone hurts the cause by being so damned obnoxious. Yes, alcohol is the true "gateway drug". Yes, marijuana has numerous medical benifits and few undesirable side effects. Yes, it is absurd that alcohol is celebrated while marijuana is reviled. None of that matters right now, because now all anyone will take from this thread is that Laurie is an unhinged psychobitch. Reminds me of a guy I work with. He has good conservative opinions and beliefs, but totally loses everyone when he starts in on how many deaths Bill and Hillary are personally responsible for. People scatter like cockroaches. Posted by: EastCoastBroad at December 03, 2008 02:00 PM (6Q4Mq) 70

I can't stand these "my drug of choice is better than your's" debates. Almost every drug has some benefits, but over use has dire consequences. Heroin as a pain killer is very effective, but it can't be given to terminal patients because they will become addicts. We worry that someone who is dying, will become an addict, in a hospital or under hospice care. Same with Oxycontin. Alcohol in moderation, has been proven to be beneficial, but taken in excess can cause liver and brain damage, and great embarassment in front of the boss. Pot used by those taking chemo or those with glaucoma has been proven to be effective. Of course using it in excess will cause you to act like Shaggy.
