| Racists: Georgia Democrats May Not Turn Out for Martin Because of His RaceThe latest Public Policy Polling (D) poll out of Georgia has Saxby Chambliss up by 7 points -- 53-46 (that's not a lot of undecideds). And reading FiveThirtyEight, it's not hard to see why:A little good news from Georgia would be welcome. Personally, I need it.Whatever turns out to be the case, at the close of early voting Wednesday, according to the Secretary of State's office 345,564 had voted, and 22.5% of those votes were African-American, an ominous dropoff from the 34.5% of black early voters for the general election. If Saxby does manage to significantly expand from his 3 point lead on November 4th, we can start writing the story of how the African American and youth turnout for Obama really mattered. .. As I wrote in The Straight-Ticket Youth Vote, the identity politics vote based on Obama's personal characteristics -- young and African-American -- may have counted for as much as 6 points of his victory margin -- about 4 points in the increased youth margin and turnout, and about 2 points in increased African American turnout and margin. Not only did this benefit Obama but young people also voted straight ticket for Democratic Congressional candidates. The youth vote on November 4th was about as Democratic as the Latino vote -- and twice as large. Comments1
But.... but..... but..... that would mean........ that these black voters....... *gasp* ... are racists?
BULLSHIT, I say! Posted by: wiserbud at December 02, 2008 03:08 PM (wWwJR) 2

“Chambliss was elected to the Senate in 2002 by running one of the most reprehensible campaigns of modern times. http://community.adn.com/adn/node/135064 He was up against incumbent Democrat Sen. Max Cleland, a Vietnam War veteran who lost both legs and his right arm to a grenade during that conflict.” Here’s how the Almanac of American Politics (2006) described it: “Chambliss ran an ad, much attacked in the press, showing pictures of Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein and Max Cleland, and saying that Cleland 'voted against the President’s vital homeland security efforts 11 times.’” (Those “vital homeland security efforts” Cleland opposed were intended to strip homeland security employees of union rights and other workplace protections.) The man who couldn’t bring himself to serve in the military said a man who left three limbs behind in war was a weakling who would turn the country over to terrorists.” Posted by: J_Gocht at December 02, 2008 03:43 PM (N7i+9) 18

As a Georgian, Max Cleland was a fine Senator, but he grew into the idea that that seat was his God-Given right. You may not know it, but 2002 in GA politics is known as the Great Reversal. Breaking almost 130 years of uninterrupted Democrat rule.
BTW, you do know one William Jefferson Clinton was a draft dodger, right? Who ran against and beat not one, but two highly decorated WW2 veterans? I mean, think of the IRONY of that. Posted by: Techie at December 02, 2008 04:28 PM (MHre4) 33

I also avidly hope that Franken can't succeed in stealing Coleman's seat (bc it looks like stealing is the only way he gets it at this point). My next Christmas wish is that the Republicans (and any Dems who will join for the occassional vote) will do their best to lead, to hold the line, to propose solutions (even if they can't get them passed - at least try. The public will catch on).

The reason for lack of black turn out is obvious. Martin DID NOT promise to pay their mortgage and fill their gas tank. It is amazing this racist hogwash is still being used as an excuse. It's so far beyond "over the top" and entered "deranged goony bird" territory. Future generations will look back on this is say " what the fuck was wrong with these idiots, this goes right off the bullshit meter".

From a 1997 puff-piece about Cleland run the Boston Globe: Cleland, 25 years old, and two members of his team were now ordered to set up a radio relay station at the division assembly area, 15 miles away. The three gathered antennas, radios, and a generator and made the 15-minute helicopter trip east. After unloading the equipment, Cleland climbed back into the helicopter for the ride back. But at the last minute, he decided to stay and have a beer with some friends. As the helicopter was lifting off, he shouted to the pilot that he was staying behind and jumped several feet to the ground. Beer... Now there's a temporary solution. Cleland hunched over to avoid the whirring blades and ran. Turning to face the helicopter, he caught sight of a grenade on the ground where the chopper had perched. It must be mine, he thought, moving toward it. He reached for it with his right arm just as it exploded, slamming him back and irreparably altering his plans for a bright, shining future. ... It takes four seconds for a grenade to explode, Cleland explains during a long car trip across southern Georgia. He's home during a Senate recess, thanking the voters for having sent him to Washington, giving little reports on what it's like to follow in the footsteps of revered former senators Sam Nunn and Richard B. Russell. The afternoon sun is beating against the windshield. Cleland twists around in the front passenger seat and recounts, second by second, the sequence of events that changed his life. The grenade fell off his web gear as he jumped from the chopper. One thousand-one. He ran, head down, out from under the helicopter blades. One thousand-two. He turned around and saw the grenade. One thousand-three. He started back and reached for the grenade. One thousand-four. "Boom," he says. Can you say dumbass? The tragic events there brought him some glory, marred though it was. After the explosion, the Army gave Cleland the Soldier's Medal, for shielding his men from the grenade blast (no one was nearby, he says), and the Silver Star, for coming to the aid of wounded troops the night of the Khe Sanh rocket attack (something he says his men did, but he did not do). Yet the press and the left maintains he's a hero. When Max Cleland ran last year for the United States Senate against Guy Millner, the rich Republican businessman, he ran as a hero, as an icon held up to voters to appreciate and respect. In numerous television ads, the narrator noted that Cleland "volunteered for Vietnam and served with honor until a grenade shattered his body." On the screen, there was a picture of the young Cleland in fatigues, tall and broad-shouldered, which then blended into a current picture of Cleland in a wheelchair. ... In a tough race, it was Cleland's very personal advertising approach that may have helped him cling to his narrow lead. The strategy, he says, was deliberate. "It was designed to share me. It startled some people because they didn't think I'd be that honest," he says. "What we were trying to communicate was me. The campaign was light on issues." But the empty suit, devoid of substance, loved playing the pity card: Still, despite the accidental nature of his wounding, Cleland wasn't above using it to his benefit in the race. Indeed, had he come back from Vietnam in one piece, Cleland does not believe he would be where he is today. Whether people voted for him out of pity, or as a means of thanking him for his service to the country, or in admiration of his accomplishments, his loss of limbs and his wheelchair made a deep impression. Would he have won a state Senate race at the age of 28 otherwise? Cleland thinks not. Would Carter have appointed him to head the Veterans Administration at the age of 34? Cleland thinks not. "I would have probably been some frustrated history teacher, teaching American government at some junior college," he says. Merle Black, an Emory University political scientist, agrees with Cleland. "His story, his injury, and the way that he copes with that, that's been his main political asset," he says. "He's not been an issues politician." So a Democrat clown deserves to be Senator for life after he blows himself up because he: 1) Didn't secure his gear. and 2) Jumped on the grenade he dropped which wouldn't have injured anybody if he'd only hit the deck. Yes -- I did pick the puff piece apart for the parts critical of Cleland. If you read the entire article you'll get diabetes. For three dollars or so you can buy The Globe's piece of puke from its archives: TRAGEDY TRANSFORMED WHEN A GRENADE SHATTERED HIS LIMBS IN VIETNAM, MAX CLELAND COULD HAVE GIVEN UP. INSTEAD, HE CAME BACK FIGHTING -- ALL THE WAY TO THE US SENATE. Author(s): Jill Zuckman, Globe Staff Jill Zuckman is a member of the Globe's Washington bureau. Got my vote in for Saxby 0700, sir! As an aside, I met Max Cleland when I was in high school in 1974 in Pinkie Master's Lounge in Savannah, Pinkie's being a hotbed of Democratic politics in addition to a dive-assed bar. Max was a Georgia state senator then (the same seat my old man held in the late '50s). He was a smarmy little fuck then and he's a smarmy little fuck now.
