Coleman Might Actually Win Recount

Or, rather, be acknowledged by the counters as having won the recount, which is always the more difficult part for Republicans. Somehow, in close races, Democrats always find more votes than we do.

Maybe not this time -- Coleman's still ahead by 172 votes with 74% of the recount complete, and Franken partisans' attempt to expand the "recount" to reconsidering already-disqualified ballots has been rejected.

Coleman has occasionally earned the RINO label. Anyone want to trade a RINO for Al Franken? What we actually need is more conservatives, not fewer moderates. We need greater numbers in absolute terms of both -- let's not just attempt to change the ratio between them of a dwindling absolute number.

So says Jim DeMint:

Now, there are some people who believe we need to purge certain parts of the Republican Party -- say, moderates or social conservatives. Is that something we should consider?
....No, I think a lot of Republicans we call moderates believe in the same principles we do, but their constituencies are a little different and sometimes the way our policies are presented by Republicans who are conservative like me are seen as "single issue" or things that don't relate to their part of the country.
What we do need to do is recruit the best candidates we can for positions. We need to equip our candidates with the core principles of the Republican Party that they can translate for their constituents in a way that inspires them.
So, I am not trying to divide the party between moderates and conservatives. But, ...those of us who believe in these core principles do need to talk to our colleagues, talk to a national audience, and show some of the folks here who are not voting like I am that these are winning ideas. If we take them boldly to the American people, they will send us back to office.

But check out this ominous twist:

Perhaps the most intriguing wrinkle to consider when looking at possible litigation is the makeup of the canvassing board. Minnesota Supreme Court justices Eric Magnuson and G. Barry Anderson are both serving on the panel. This means that they would need to recuse themselves from any litigation related to the senate recount that comes before the state’s top court. Given that both were GOP appointees, this would seem to be an unwelcome development for the Coleman campaign. “It gets two potentially partisan Republicans off, although I don’t think they’re that partisan myself,” Schultz says.

Coleman definitely isn't a solid conservative, and I've been put off by his stances on ANWR, "Global Warming" and his squishyness on illegal immigration. That said, he's probably about as conservative a Senator as we can expect in MN.

There are districts in MN where an actual conservative could win a House seat, but not so in the Senate.

This recount mess wouldn't have happened if Coleman hadn't run such a shitty campaign- MN isn't the sort of place where you can rely almost solely on negative ads. Unfortunately that's what Coleman did and it cost him votes.

8 the independence party is called "DFL-lite" (DFL is the Minnesota brand of the Democrat party) I think his votes would have split slightly towards Franken, but most of the Minnesota Dems hated Al a lot.

Probably not. If exit polls are to be believed, Franken likely lost as many- and probably more- votes to Barkley as Coleman. Besides, having a 3rd party candidate on the ballot isn't terribly new around here.

Exit polls are tough to interpret though. Barkley's name was listed first, and I have to wonder how many voters who were there just to vote for Black Jesus simply filled in his oval for the hell of it.

I suspect Barkely got some votes from those who wouldn't vote for Franken, and were turned off by Coleman's steady stream of negative ads. I don't recall seeing any Barkley ads.

Hey, I'm from the Polish/German Minnesota contingent, not the dirty lutefisk-eating Scandi population, fuckyouverymuch. Maybe, but I'm not that worried. This isn't Illinois, New Jersey or Louisiana- places where political corruption is tolerated with a wink and a shrug. MN politics can get a bit weird (Ventura), but for the most part it's civil and relatively straight.

Well, you never know. Franken brought in some people from the WA Governor recount in 2004 to work for him.

Also, one of the band of Eeyores (or, are we not allowed to use that term anymore?) is bringing up the possibility of some NH race in the 70s as a possible scenario.

But, I remain optimistic. The margin is enough that the fraud may not triumph.

24 Coleman needs to win this one simply to keep Frankin out. Frankin as a Senator would be a disaster, and I have real problems that this election was so close with all of the problems Frankin had, multiple counts of tax evasion, his Playboy "Pornorama" article, and poor decisions in the race. Still he got the endorsements of womens groups and the Unions. Coleman is no prize from a conservative standpoint but he beats Frankin Hands Down. Recount the Ballots like the Minnesota law requires and then anounce the winner, and let the crying begin.

While making some concessions for constituencies is fine, it gets out of hand when a RINO becomes someone like Lincoln Chaffee or Chuck Hagel, losers who have not a conservative bone in their bodies and who revel in sticking it to Republicans at the most inopportune time. McCain often falls into that same category.

Also, when we have an opportunity to get a real conservative in a seat (e.g., like trading in Specter for Pat Toomey), the RNC should definitely take the opportunity instead of supporting the RINO as they did last time.

Coleman has a rating from ACU of 64 in 2007 and 68 in 2006, with a lifetime of 74. That means that he started out as somewhat conservative and has gone to RINO. While that is true he is still above 50 and higher than the typical 7 or 8 rating that the really liberal assholes like “the One” got.

The time to get rid of him is in the primaries.

I quite simply won't accept any more monkey business on this, and I've had it with the trampling on the principle of the rule of law. Though we will have to await events, I think all good men and women need to start thinking of what they are willing to do to defend liberty if we are, in fact, a nation of men, not laws, as it appears we are, and that power will be obtained by hook or by crook. Things like widespread civil disobediance and compliance with the law, for to do any less is to allow those who have no shame to rule. Raw power is apparently the only thing Democrats will respond to any more, and we should be prepared to give it to them good and hard.
