| Breaking: Major Terror Attacks In India UPDATE: Death Toll Increased And Fighting Continues REPORT: Americans Held Hostage![]() Two terrorists carrying guns tonight took 15 people, half of them foreigners, hostage on the roof of the luxury Taj Hotel, one of theThe hostage situation at one or more of the hotels is on going. Original post: There's been a series of terrorist attacks in the Indian city of Mumbai. Terror struck the country's financial capital late on Wednesday night as coordinate serial explosions and indiscriminate firing rocked Obviously this is a breaking story and first reports are often wrong but FNC just said they are being told officials don't think this is a purely domestic attack but rather one that may be aimed in part at least at westerns. They are saying that gunmen went through a hotel demanding to know where the 'British and Americans' were. Thanks to minnie in the comments for the heads up. UPDATE: FNC has a reporter on from India who says the reports are up to 80 people have been killed (though most reports are saying 25 dead so far) and fighting is ongoing. More here including an eyewitness account from a UK member of the European Parliament who was in one of the hotels when the terrorists attacked. Wow, CNN International says the attacks have been going on for several hours and there are continuing firefights around the city (20 million people, formally known as Bombay) and new attacks are still being reported. They are also reporting that there have been follow on attacks at least one hospital where victims were taken.Comments1

They want to kill americans and British but they don't have a problem taking out the people of India in the process. No, they aren't just looking at those people to point the finger at the target they want nad let them go on their merry way when they do locate the true target. Everyone is despensible in the process.

For a while only CNBC was covering this which was odd as generally they don't break in for news. I wonder if they covered it becasue they thought it was important for the markets?

This may be the wrong place and time for this, but does it infuriate anyone else that, while this is going on in India, the "Breaking News" headline on the Fox site is about someone getting arrested in the Reno kidnapping case and that the mom in the cyber-bullying case was convicted?
Really? Is that what Fox has come down to? A fucking terror attack is going on in India, one of our best allies in the war on terror and the fucking breaking news is about that stupid, Enquirer-type shit? This is why I stopped watching Fox. Drew I watch CNBC a lot, rarely do they cover live breaking news. I guess I should have been more specific. What I am actually trying to say is that the traders are all watching CNBC and seeing this so we will see the impact, if any, on the market. Sorry for not being clear enough. You are doing a great job of distilling the information as everyone seems to be saying something different.

Can you recommend any good blogs or sources from India? The only one I could think of off the top of my head was the India Times but they aren't updating much. Posted by: DrewM. at November 26, 2008 02:38 PM (hlYel) 32
CNBC was probably covering the event because Mumbai is where the major financial centers are for India (sort of like Wall Street for NYC).
Most Americans (not visiting relatives or friends) in India would be staying at the higher end hotels because of the amenities. These hotels are almost all filled with Western-based foreigners and are clearly targets because they stand out from the rest of the infrastructure. If the attacks were aimed at these places, Americans and Westerners were almost definitively the targets. Posted by: deputac at November 26, 2008 02:39 PM (azako) 33

President-Elect Obama (PBUH) would be happy to step in and resolve this crisis, but only if the current administration admits it's many, many crimes against humanity and immediately steps aside and allows the magical and wondrous President-Elect (PBUH) to assume the office of President immediately. Until such time, unfortunately, there is nothing that the President-Elect (PBUH) can do, and any and all blame for this crisis must fall at the feet of teh current administration. There will be no more questions at this time. Thank you very much. Posted by: Office of the President-Elect at November 26, 2008 02:41 PM (IHbof) 34

Bonus question: how much sympathy will we owe New Yorkers, or other urban Blue State voters, when (not if) the bombs go off in one of those cities? This isn't 2001, when Al Gore (who voted for the first Iraq War) was the choice of Team Blue. Since then they've paraded their hatred of "redneck" America in their streets, and flocked to Fahrenheit 9/11. Since then they've voted for John Kerry. Since then, in primary time, they voted for Barack Obama. And then they voted for him again in the general election. They have, since 2004, consistently voted for giving Islamists what they want ("Stop War & End Racism", with the Left's definitions of "war" and "racism"). 43 Christoph, thanks for putting that into perspective. I hadn't seen the pictures, and it's all theoretical right now. And I do NOT want to see pictures like that. But we have to start thinking of how to react, morally, when we are supporting efforts to secure people who have insulted us so deeply. Posted by: David Ross at November 26, 2008 02:56 PM (GwV+j) 53
Here's my concern:
Iraq sucked up a lot of the money and talent in the terrorist world. You know, the flypaper strategy. It was a battleground that gave the terrorists disadvantages (And I think this is part of the reason the surge wasn't implemented ASAP... to continue having an Iraq war is to continue having a safer America). Now that Iraq is cooling off, Afghanistan is much less favorable for us, and there's a real chance it won't suck up anywhere near as many terrorists or funds from bad guys. So this means that a lot of the terror attacks around the world are going to get back to frequent levels we saw when Clinton basically ignored the problem. A clever president would be able to keep fighting Islamofascism as well as Bush has. Instead, we've got Obama who could be awesome or a dud but is mainly a blank slate. I hope Obama's got a plan for this. Posted by: Shill at November 26, 2008 02:56 PM (8jYMc) 54

"And I do NOT want to see pictures like that. But we have to start
thinking of how to react, morally, when we are supporting efforts to
secure people who have insulted us so deeply."
I get your point, David Ross, however 3 counterpoints: 1. Limiting your sympathy only citizens of states who voted wisely (in your opinion) doesn't sound like a recipe for a well-functioning country. 2. 37% of New Yorkers voted for McCain-Palin, so I suppose we could spare some sympathy for those. 3. If there was a terrorist attack in Texas, only GOP voters deserve sympathy? The whole idea is rhetorical, I understand, but it fails several tests. Finally: "... we are supporting efforts to secure people who have insulted us so deeply..." That's going to be Barack Obama's primary responsibility soon. Do you suggest he has an extra duty to secure New York, but not South Carolina? Posted by: Christoph at November 26, 2008 03:03 PM (hawOV) 60
It is noteworthy that they were targeting Americans and Brits- allegedly. Most attacks in Mumbai and India in general are usually aimed at Indians- payback for Kashmir. When you register at a hotel in India, you have to register your passport. Depending on how co-ordinated this is, and what information they have access to, it would be easy for gunmen to go right to the rooms with British and American passport holders.

"Hemant Karkare" is his name, according to Irene. Probably right! I couldn't spell it. Two other senior officers, Vijay Saluskar, an "encounter specialist" (I believe also anti-terrorism related) was also with Karkare and was killed. Another top officer whose name I missed was killed at the same time. Apparently, they were talking to News Crews when a Honda Civic drove up, and passengers shot them. I don't think David Ross wished ill on anyone. I think he finds it frustrating that people vote stupidly for a man who wants to withdraw from our enemies when the strategy of engaging them "over there" has been phenomenally successful at protecting the American homeland. It doesn't help that this same man has no understanding nor respect for (Landstuhl when he didn't visited the wounded soldiers) the military and wants to dramatically cut their budget. I understand his frustration. However, most Britains supported Chamberlain (who was a good, decent, and utterly weak man) before they supported Churchill out of desperation and dawning realization. VJ is the MAN in Hindustan!
With Tuesday’s encounter, the number of criminals shot dead by inspector Vijay Salaskar touched 78. Salaskar, who was reportedly sidelined for the last two years for unearthing the gutka-underworld nexus, was recently attached to the crime branch, where he currently heads the anti-extortion cell. An officer of the 1983 batch, Salaskar in his 24 years of service has eliminated many criminals. Amar Naik, Jaggu Shetty, Sadhu Shetty, Kundan Singh Rawat, Zahoor Makhanda are some of the gangsters who have fallen to Salaskar’s bullets. According to sources, the police officer had once even gone hunting for former don Arun Gawli. “But Gawli fled from the scene, forcing Salaskar to return empty-handed. However, Salaskar got even by killing his two trusted men, Sada Pawle and Vijay Tandel, in 1997, triggering allegations that the encounters were fake. After this, Gawli was so scared that during the 2005 elections, he complained to the government that Salaskar was trying to kill him and requested that he be transferred,’’ sources said. http://onlybombay.blogspot.com Posted by: moronizer at November 26, 2008 03:31 PM (p1s9n) Posted by: IreneFingIrene at November 26, 2008 03:31 PM (lhxhu) 97
"My God, the poor indian reporter on FNC is talking so fast, she must be so upset, the look in her eyes says it all."
A dozen or so attacks across her city, worry for her loved ones and herself, and the knowledge powerful top police officers who she's reported on in the past were just shot dead -- while talking to reporters. I can understand her feeling upset. it's a matter of priorities-now, in case we didn't know, there are still bad guys out there. they want to kill people. americans are fine but it's not limited to us. is closing Gitmo still going to be the A Number One priority for the new admin? to gain goodwill?

Army Commandos are in the Mumbai Oberoi hotel where there are apparently up to 15 armed terrorists (according to IBN). There was some firing and smoke deployed. At that time, a westerner escaped. He says the terrorists were armed with AK-47s and other "sophisticated rifles" as well as lots of explosives and detonators.
Prior to this, the terrorists asked for Americans and British subjects, checking their passports. A terrible situation. Posted by: Christoph at November 26, 2008 03:47 PM (hawOV) 112
Looking at the Indian TV - people are stupid the world over.
You have gangs of terrorists roaming the city attacking heavily armed police, close to 100 dead already, and the streets are crowded with rubberneckers. WTF Posted by: Jean at November 26, 2008 03:47 PM (HVRSA) 113
IBN repeated the number of "15 terrorists" in the Oberoi. That seems like a lot to me, but that's what they said.

Christoph: But implying no sympathy should be due to New Yorkers in the event of a terror attack is not the most pleasant of regards. My point is -- I didn't vote for the Obama. Don't lump me in with the others. His/your frustration? What do you think it's like for me -- I have to live around a lot of these spoiled cowardly people. But I don't wish them ill will or cease regarding them as Americans deserving of consideration just because of their politics. Save that for the Kos "Screw Them" crowd. So can we start a new thread on the India situation? This one seems to have been killed.

"A local journalist told CNN he had seen evidence of an attack at the city's domestic airport, which is on the outskirts of the Mumbai. IBN reported explosions at a gas station and inside a taxi on a dockside road.
Attacks were reported at the Taj and Oberoi hotels, the popular Café
Leopold, and Cama Hospital, and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus
railway station." CNN is all over it. Fox is draggin' ass. Posted by: icemike at November 26, 2008 03:54 PM (a7kOz) 117
