Who the Heck is Katon Dawson?

He just threw his name into the hat for RNC chair.

South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Katon Dawson told supporters Monday he will seek the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee, pledging to help rebuild the party after devastating losses on Election Day.

In his Monday statement, he touted his “aggressive” approach to fundraising, and Republican success in maintaining control of political offices in his state. He also noted that Republicans “made outreach to non-traditional Republican voters a priority” specifically the state GOP’s selection of an African-American to serve as an RNC member and the election of a black Republican to the General Assembly. Diversifying the Republican Party is a hot topic of discussion — one of Dawson’s rivals for the nomination is former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele, who is African-American.

All I know about him is that he's an egomaniac, if the South Carolina GOP homepage is any measure.

Oh. That Was Fast: Vinty at DPUD is not impressed. Apparently there's a country-club membership involved. Hmmm.

If that is true, then we are destined for failure.

Diversity has nothing to do with core Conservative principles. It is a word empty of anything tangible.

If we grant precedence to the idea of "Diversity" over the tangible ideas (such as limited government and fiscal responsibility) that have historically made Conservatism a winner, then we begin the process of righting the country on our weak left foot.

Just how well has that been working for us lately?

If all you have is a “whites only” deed restriction then you don’t have anything. Those kind of deed and will covenants were invalidated decades ago and are unenforceable. In addition, there is no easy way to remove them from the deed.

 

The question is, does the club have a written rule in the  by-laws that prohibits blacks?

From the article:

“I understand the deed is unconstitutional,” Dawson said. And, on a personal level, “that deed is unacceptable.”

In 1948, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned similar land restrictions as a violation of the equal protection clause. But no one has challenged the deed restriction in court.

Dawson wrote a letter to club leaders Aug. 20, urging them to allow people of color.

“It is with only the best interests of our club’s proud tradition at heart that I inform you of my intent to work to change the club practice that would exclude membership for anyone based on any specific ethnicity,” he wrote in the letter obtained by The State.

I'm not a lawyer and I haven't seen the clubs deed, but I don't see any reasonable way to interpret the expression "change the club practice", in light of the other facts including his acknowledgment of the deeds technical unconstitutionality, except an implicit admission that the club continued to have an established practice of discriminating based on race.  Dawson was  a member for 12 years and he's not even trying to argue that it was just in appearance and not intentional. 

Proof beyond a reasonable doubt? no.  Evidence beyond the level we require for most of our opinions on people's motivations, absolutely.
