Is Barack Obama Reviving The WPA? [Vinnie]

I guess if this is true, we may be looking at more than two to four crummy years.

"We'll put people back to work rebuilding our crumbling roads and bridges, modernizing schools that are failing our children, and building wind farms and solar panels," Obama said. He also made a commitment to fuel-efficient cars and alternative energy technologies "that can free us from our dependence on foreign oil and keep our economy competitive in the years ahead."

Obama pointed to the past, saying that Americans in this country's darkest hours have risen above their divisions to solve their problems, as a hope for the future.

One problem with The Messiah's reference to the past. FDR's policies extended the Great Depression by seven years. It took World War II to get us out of it. For those of you who don't know what the WPA was, here's the Wiki entry. Heavily laced with Socialist love, of course.

The other problem with Barry's reference to the past that I have is that he seems to want to revive Depression era policies when we're not in a depression.

Of course, his Chief of Staff Elect Rahm Emmanuel did instruct us recently that this crisis is an opportunity.

I think he does. The problem with that other than the obvious is that in the 30's you could start construction on a major public works project in a couple of months, now it takes 2 years to get a permit for a housing subdivision if you don't have lawsuits by envirowhacks.

One thing that Obama is doing that I like though by his cabinet choices is telling the KoSuckers to pound sand and that he really doesn't need them anymore.

4 I can hardly wait for the people in heavily unionized areas,  who maintain the roads, schools, etc. to start speaking up.  Seeing as they supported The Chosen One. 

Hell, I live in Kalifornia.  Some of the parents in the local PTA got together to help 'spruce up' the front of the local school one weekend.  Ya'd have thought the world was coming to an end.

Believe me, "the workers" did not appreciate the help.

This is great! I can quit my 70+ hr/week job and become a civil servant. Tell everyone to fuck off (including the boss) because I'm working through issues. Not to mention 'borrowing' anything and everything that's not nailed down. Sweet, I can't wait.

One reason the WPA worked to the extent that it did is that it never occured to anyone back then that you could get something for nothing.  Most of those people worked their asses off because they were so thankful to have a job, when the alternative was starving.

I'm guessing the current crop of recruits won't have the same level of pride and motivation.

9 Several problems here.

One, a WPA style project will simply be for illegal aliens from Mexico unless you require proof of citizenship. Spending half the budget or more to employ Mexican nationals in a time of recession is a quick route to impeachment.

Second, you have the problem as noted above that it takes decades for construction to begin, see Boston's Big Dig, LA's subway system, almost anything. Lawsuits, lawsuits, lawsuits.

Third, the money will go to States to prop up State Employee employment and useless paper-pushers, keep them employed. No one of the blue collar persuasion will get a job or keep one through this action. Just "community organizers" who are not very large in numbers (thank God).

FDR deported illegal aliens, and legal US citizens, too, to keep WPA programs to the White Majority voters, who voted him back in with a classic patronage operation. It can work (even if the economy is messed up as a result), but requires mass patronage not the select community organizer model Obama's worked in. He's clueless and likely to make things WORSE on a massive scale without any patronage to the vast middle classes and working classes.

10 What the hell does "modernizing our schools" mean???  You can build all the new fucking buildings you want but if the teachers and the programs they teach remain the same or become more socialist, it's still going to suck and get worse.  Great, the classrooms are newer but our students are still being taught by retarded teachers teaching to the bare minimum so they can suck in more federal money when their students can finally say 2+2=4 in the 12th fucking grade.

12 OMG, the WPA was the first thing that popped into my mind when I read this story this morning.  Wasn't sure a whole lot of people would know what the WPA was, lol.  And then there was the CCC, too.  They built some nice lodges and shit in the national parks.

I dunno . . . I totally expected my breasts to grow at least one, and probably 2, cup sizes the second he was elected and that hasn't happened yet either.  I just don't know what to believe anymore.

Looking at a WPA project from a liberal sloth perspective is very telling.  Why would a physically able young man or woman subject themselves to a demeaning job when they can simply apply for student loans and screw off in school?  They can also work for a few months at a menial task, quit to 'find their true calling' and draw unemployment insurance payments. 

As many parents have discovered, having their scumbag liberal children return to the nest to suck the life out of their parent's retirement is a real threat.  Instead of kicking their asses to the curb, many parents succumb to unreasonable demands and support these worthless scabs. 

 Hooter enhancement is on O'Bambi's list of things to do, but only after he cures cancer, converts Barney Fag to straight, and performs face surgery on Nancy Pelosi to create a new anus in place of her foul mouth.

18 Maybe the first thing the Selected One should do is try starting up college programs at the technical level  to train people to do these blue collar jobs since, as it was pointed out above, the ranks of people both willing to work with their hands and actually literate enough to read blueprints and schematics is fairly thin these days. I got out of the military in the very early 90's and started to train as a machinist but switched to more technical education when  it became apparent that the future was going to be written by eggheads and pencil pushers. I became one, after a sort, but kept my blue collar personal penchants.
You will need a million workmen to fix bridges, patch roads, operate heavy machinery and the like. I have friends that can still do that, and I guarantee the illegals who have a hard time figuring out what a 'compound miter cut' is, will
have a harder time discerning how to tune the trusses supporting a cable-stayed bridge or hang the road deck on a suspension bridge.
Stupid people make bad things. Please see "Galloping Gertie", the bridge over the Tacoma Narrows, that fell into the Sound after failing in a spectacular way due to design flaws. Harmonics are a biotch, they say. That was a colossal screw up. I look for more of those in the new age of طbama work projects if they try to do this too soon. Think the bridge in Minnesota for flavor.

I hope they are not considering that, but rather just a lot of Keynesian public infrstructure spending on road, bridge and other infrastructure projects (at union prevailing wages of course). 

The best thing would be to lower taxes and tighten spending, but if they are going to spend--let it be on public infrastructure, not bullshit down the shitter things like stimulous checks.

I don't think the government should be an employer though, unless it is unavoidable due to the nature of the job - there should be open bidding for contracts, and the evaluation process should be transparent and accountable to the public.

What I wanna see is what a half-million electric - battery powered cars tap into any big city's power grid in the summer, when electrical power is already stretched to the limit.

Overloads and blackouts, anyone?  Or will everyone be forced to drive by day, charge by night? 

Maybe the only place to get air conditioning will be in your car, as blackouts kill the electricity to homes and businesses.

Then there are the hydrogen-powered cars [think Hindenburgs on wheels] that generate electrical power to run the car, with water vapor as the waste product. 

Will you collect the vapor as you drive around, thus lowering overall efficiency, or will a half-million cars in big cities (think Washington DC) be emitting H2O vapors on a stiflingly humid summer day, adding even more humidity to the air, making a/c's go into overdrive and consuming even more electricity?

If a carpenter or ironworker is hired for one of these projects would you consider that creating a new job (for an out of work tradesman) or saving his job ?
