Lots Of Hope, A Bit Less Change....Obama Will Not Push To Eliminate "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Anytime Soon

Clintons everywhere, Gates still in the Pentagon and now this? This isn't the Change! the left thought it knew.

President-elect Barack Obama will not move for months, and perhaps not until 2010, to ask Congress to end the military's decades-old ban on open homosexuals in the ranks, two people who have advised the Obama transition team on this issue say.

Repealing the ban was an Obama campaign promise. However, Mr. Obama first wants to confer with the Joint Chiefs of Staff and his new political appointees at the Pentagon to reach a consensus and then present legislation to Congress, the advisers said.

From a conservative perspective there are a couple of way to look at this and Obama's other 'adjustments' . First, he's not a knee jerk left as we thought or he is as knee jerk left as we thought, he's just smarter and therefore potentially more dangerous than we thought. My guess is he's the latter.

In some ways a disorganized, reflexively lefty Obama would make more mistakes that conservatives and Republicans could take advantage of, like when Bill Clinton took on gays in the military so soon in his administration. The left maybe annoyed in the short term about Obama but we'll be the ones very unhappy in the long term.

1 Obama just knows the list of Clintonian mistakes.  So he won't overreach on DADT or on health care.

But he has no guide on anything else.  He's a learner, not a thinker.

Either way you guys were wrong.  And the correct answer is the former.  He isn't knee-jerk anything.  Bush was a knee-jerker.  Obama is actually a thoughtful, pragmatic man.

8 Conservative blogs have been making this same mistake all week.

We don't care if the Clintons (or members of their administration) are appointed to Obama's.  We just wanted the neo-conservatives out, and more moderate, reasoned government officials to replace them.

Of course, you can pretend like we're upset about all this, but in reality we're very pleased with the selections so far.

9 I already know that the idiot lefties would rationalize whatever Obama did to themselves. No need for SS to come along and prove it to me.

However, I still want to see their reaction when he makes Cheney the head of the Obama Jugend.

So that seven year long bitch-fest you just engaged in over the Iraq war was all an elaborate joke? You had me, I admit. Nice one!

11 Not exactly the kind of ass-pounding that America's gay soldiers had been hoping to get from Obama, I wager.

Or is this just how you see him in your wet dreams?

Perhaps we maligned Christopher Buckley prematurely.  He supported Obama based on his own sense that the man was more cynical and selfserving that even a Clinton, and that we could bet on him throwing out his lifelong political positions and campaign promises as pure pandering to the retards.

Maybe, he was correct.

19 Cross-posted from Top Headline comments thread:

I've been on active duty until just recently. I remember Clinton establishing 'don't ask, don't tell' shortly after taking office and stabbing the gay community. There was a great wailing and gnashing of teeth.

That was one of many promises that wasn't followed through once the real situation was known. Just like the Obummer administration will do. "We didn't realize how badly the Bush administration fucked that up, so we aren't going to be able to [fill in the campaign promise here]".

Obama may or may not have specifically promised an end to DADT, but the general expectation is that he would.

The unintended consequences of that one would be HUGE. Just off the top of my head, I can foresee big problems on board ship with berthing. It's one thing to use all male community bathing facilities when their "might" be gays in the group, but quite another when they are "open". Leadership is simply not prepared to deal with the resulting tensions. I'm sure gays in general would be much better off if their numbers in the military were recognized, but the transition period would be rough.

We had a hard enough time in the Navy doing the nannying and babysitting necessary to keep the wheels on the bus with no money for parts or training and an ever-expanding mission and more and more requirements for training on intangible PC crap.

It was very interesting and challenging trying to protect the "known" gays on the ship without being able to discuss anything real. You'd be surprised at the shenanigans involved.

I remember explaining to my CO once that a particular sailor was disliked and harassed because he was gay and my (dumbass) CO was flabbergasted. He refused to believe that there were gays on his ship. What an idiot. I really hated that guy.

I've "known" about a good number of gays serving on ships. Generally, they were pretty thoroughly ostracized by some, easily accepted by most.

I doubt he's very "thoughtful" in the sense that he is trying to determine right from wrong, but he certainly is CALCULATING and pragmatic.

I couldn't be happier with the BO administration to date.  I hate his picks for cabinet by nature, but they're not far left "progressives" so that's a plus.  Also, he's probably acting more conservatively that McCain would be.

Maybe he's saving that capital for big things, but I'm thinking that he is simply more ambitious than ideological.

Let's hope for no change, huh?

Here is an example:  When Obama was selected to be the President of the Harvard Law Review, the progressive and minority members of the review assumed that he would give them the masthead editor postions.

He didn't.  Instead, Obama gave three of four positions to Federalist Society members.  The progressives and minorities were hurt and asked him why.  His response was that it was not his job to run the Review to fortify the resumes of people who held similar views to his own.  Rather it was to make the Harvard Law Review the best possible publication he could and those guys were better suited to the job.

The Democrats took Congress and the White House by running against the Iraq war. It fascinates me that, having won Congress (two years ago) and the WH, the Democrats seem to be set on continuing exactly the same foreign policy as Bush and the GOP.

It's hard not to get the impression that for you scumbags, the war was simply a club to hit the Republicans with and not something you ever really gave a shit about one way or the other.

flenser:

Give a shit about the war?  In what way?

I was indifferent to the "winning" and "losing" of it because I was opposed to it in its outset.  (I didn't think we were justified in going in, so why would I care about "winning?")

I was troubled by the loss of life, embarrassed by the scandal, angered by the waste of our tax dollars, worried about the effect it had on our international relationships (friend, foe, and neutral alike), and shocked by the incompetence of it all.

.Also, we went to war against Saddam Hussein and his army, did we not?  We defeated that army and killed Saddam Hussein years ago.  So we "won" the war a long long time ago.  What we were left with (a brutal mess of a nation-building exercise) was painfully predictable prior to the outset.

Seattle,

Thank you for being honest and admitting what we've suspected all along...you (and most other liberals) are preening fucking jackasses who put their personal feelings and desires over the good of the country.

If you don't think that we as a country are better off for winning the war, than you are mentaly fucking retarded.

If you can't put you personal likes and dislikes aside for the good of the country you are a fucking piece of shit.

Either way...fuck you and your friends. The idea that people like you are actually going to be in positions of authority in this country is fucking disgusting.

Fuck you and your self-centered "If I don't like it, it doesn't matter attitude".

Revealing, I guess.  As far as his thoughtful enlightenment, you're still left with a rather empty resume to judge that with.  Its still surprising that Obama's first accomplishment against adversity is to sit in the big chair, but perhaps we have become the American Idol nation as so many feared.

Posted by: toby928 at November 21, 2008 07:11 PM (PD1tk)

40 It will be the presidency of plausible deniability.  He won't actually have any policies per se.  His minions in the cabinet will have policies.  If they work, it will be because of Obama's transformative effect.  If they don't, it's not Obama's fault, it's the fault of the secretary he appointed (who wasn't really an Obamion anyway and was just selected to appeal to some ungrateful constituency).
