Get 'em While the Gettings Good; Obama's AG Pick is a Gun Grabber

Eric Holder, Obama's pick for Attorney General was a Deputy AG under Clinton. On March 2, 2000, he gave a question and answer on the topic of gun control. It's long, but here's his introduction:

We know that there is not one simple answer, and we know that there is nothing we can do that will prevent every single crime or act of violence. But we also know that there are some common-sense things that we can do and that we must do. And so I want to add my voice to those who are calling on Congress to finally -- to finally -- pass these very common-sense gun measures:

* First, to require child safety locks for all handguns that are sold.

* Second, to ban violent juveniles from ever having the ability to own guns.

* Third, to pass the president's handgun licensing proposal, which requires safety certification for all handgun purchasers.

* Fourth, to support research in smart gun technology which can limit a gun's use to its authorized owner.

And finally, to close the gun show loophole by requiring a background check for all gun purchases at gun shows.

The briefing was in response to recent shootings involving children, so he explains much of his program as needed "for the children." The whole thing is here.

1 National Ammo Day tomorrow.  Gonna get extra, I think.

How would you limit a gun's use to its owner? And what if you needed to borrow a weapon in some sort of an emergency?

An electronic device that allows a gun to fire when the device receives a code from the shooter. Doesn't help if you left your coding device in your other pants and Mr Psycho wants your wife, but hey life can be that way! Right?

Safety certification for all handgun purchasers. I'd actually sign on to that if they did the same thing for people who a. Vote, and b. Breed.

7 I think that's what Obama's Civilian Defense Force is for.  Its is the 'well regulated militia' needed for national defense, so you are either a member of Obama's militia or its illegal for you to own a gun.

20 I've got a question for the gun nuts out there.  I'm looking at purchasing a semiautomatic rifle, and since a renewed "assault weapons" ban may be coming down the pike, I figure I need to get one while the gettings good.  My thoughts are:

1.) An M1 Garand will probably still be available for purchase after a ban (fingers crossed), so I'm holding off on that.

2.) Anything with a 20+ round magazine is preferable.

3.) I'd prefer .308 Winchester as opposed to 7.62x39mm (AK/SKS round) or 5.56mm.

4.) It must be serviceable for hunting if necessary (i.e. reasonably accurate and could take down a deer).

5.) Can have a scope mounted on it.

I'm leaning towards either a Springfield Armory M1A SOCOM II (with the cluster Picatinny Rail) or a DSA, Inc. SA58 (FN FAL clone).  Any other ideas are welcome.

Isn't Holder the same guy who was respondible for the Rich pardon during the Clinton administration?  Obama demonstrates exactly how bipartisan his administration is going to be.

Recommend a pump action shoot gun, Mossberg or an autoload if you want less recoil.  Cheaper than A-15 style weapons and better suited to home defense.  If you buy a pistol get a wheel  pistol if you aren't well versed or don't want any problems, 357 or higher caliber.   If you want an automatic pistol go for a SIG.

Posted by: Thomas Jackson at November 18, 2008 10:12 PM (0Qynq)

28 Right, shotgun for home defense, pistol for concealed carry.  Rifles for either hunting or making that 2nd Amendment fashion statement.  My priority is the EBR since I think they'll be the first to go down.  Shotguns will probably be the last.

Get the ammo you can afford.  My guess is that some of it will be taxed and some will be outright forbidden.  Depends on the needs of the children, dontcha know.

Posted by: Popcorn at November 18, 2008 10:23 PM (Tha0W)

29

My concealed carry class and certificate are out of the way and all that remains is to send in the $$ and the fingerprints for the license.

This weekend, the advanced training course.

After that, the 14 hour course which teaches pull and shoot techniques.

I don't think it's possible to have too much training nor too much practice. And, so far, the most threatening part of being a gun owner is the thought of field-strippping it for cleaning as it's a pretty stiff gun right now and I'm trying to loosen up the slide a bit.

And, oh yeah...Damn! It's fun to shoot.

31 Holder's points, point by point:

Child safety locks: No, In a household with children a gun safe with a push button combination lock is better. But shouldn't be mandated by law.

Ban violent juvies from owning, ever: No problem, but maybe a review process after 20 years of a St. Francis type lifestyle.

Safety certification: OK, but needs to be quick and not require any particular training. Main problem: Who pays the cost ? Maybe the Dems would require NRA membership, with the NRA doing the testing. Or not, maybe CodePink would be better

"Smart" guns: No, raises the cost and adds an added risk of failure, i.e., the wrong person might end up dead.

Gun Show loophole: OK.

32

As for Obama and holder. I'm not too worried about them disarming the citizenry. They might make it more difficult to purchase, but they'll have a hell of a time taking away that which is already in our hands. In fact, the very fear of what is likely to come has been a boon to the gun industry.

We now see the true and right meaning of the 2nd amendment in action.

Posted by: jmflynny at November 18, 2008 10:28 PM (lZOpS)

33 How about no on all of them except the violent juvenile thing with a 20 year choir boy escape clause. The number of children dying from firearms is very low, unless you call a 16 year old gangbanger who caps someone a child.

34

Grab all the ammo you can get, that's where they'll start.

there's time yet for weapon purchases, those will be the 2nd tier of the assault, I think

#20--don't hold off on the M-1 purchase, get it now. Those things are one of the finest rifles ever made, as simple as a rock, and just as tough.  I carried one through Basic, and was issued my all-time favorite, the M-14, during my USAEUR tour.. Got an M-14 just last year from a guy, so along with the M1911, the armory's complete.

Posted by: irongrampa at November 18, 2008 10:32 PM (ud5dN)

35 A good rule of thumb is 1,000 rounds per weapon. More is always better, as it may become currency at some point. Just bought another 100 of 9mm tonight in honor of AmmoDay, and am going to a wholesaler tomorrow for about 300 more of .45. Ammo is the new Christmas present with my family.

You morons better hop to it. As soon as you convince yourselves you're not crazy, and not caring what others think of you you'll be much better off.

Where the heck is my last comment?

Iron Granpa, I'm sure you're right. That's where they'll start.

First, it will be that we can't buy personal protection ammo because we don't want the police to be out-armed.

Yet, of course, full-jackets can cut through the intruder and pass through into your kid's bedroom so, those have to go too.

So. How much is enough? I see that someone above mentioned 1k rounds pr gun.

And, with moisture its enemy, what's the best way to store it? How does humidity impact its usefullness?

Can I get some advice from in house experts on purchasing firearms?

I love these threads. Everyone else is going to mention the expensive Sigs and AR-15s, so I'm going a different route. If you are poor, Mossberg makes sturdy, low cost shotguns. Ruger makes low cost semi-autos that will last forever, as well as reasonable priced revolvers. SKS is the cheapest way to go with assault rifles. Ruger mini-14s are more expensive, but use the same ammo that the military uses. If you're worried about semi-auto confiscations, lever action cowboy rifles are a good fast shooting alternative.

Pick your guns in common calibers, so ammo will be plentiful - cops use 9mm, .40, sometimes .45. The military uses 9mm and .223 (at least for now). .308 rifle ammo is also common.

Addendum to my last post:

2 - $600 Ruger mini-14 rifles are better, in my opinion, that 1 - $1000+ AR-15. If things get bad, grab a buddy to use the other rifle.

I might bug out to central Utah where the flat desert terrain creates good sightlines and  fields of fire- reinforced bunker complex, minefields, that sort of thing. The slot canyons would make good places to trap zombies and then pour homemade napalm on them, or crush them with rockfalls.

Don't forget, morons - weapons maintenance.  Learn how to disassemble, clean and reassemble your firearm(s).  Know how your weapon works, know how to clear a malfunction.  Know how to do it in the dark.

Some zombie experts recommend machetes. In my experience with practice hobos, that's a terrible idea. Machetes don't do as much damage as you'd expect and they get stuck. Sledge hammers can crush a skull without sticking. Shovels are okay in a pinch.

Napalm is not a good weapon to take on zombies with. You have to take out the brain to bring one down and lighting em up just makes them a flaming zombie. Not a pleasant sight if you have ever seen it, and the smell is something else. Minefields are good as they will slow a zombie down, but they will keep coming even without a leg. Something like a tank ditch might be better as zombies cannot climb well.

I was in the gun store today when a black kid with a tattoo on his neck brought back his brand new, collapsing stock AK47 with a fully loaded clip jammed half in the gun. He'd never cleaned the cosmoline and the rifle wouldn't work for him. He didn't even know what a cleaning kit was when the shop keeper asked him. He was also using corrosive surplus ammo, because he didn't want to pay full price for good ammo. I felt so sorry for the poor gun.

I like Glocks, but it would be really hard to pass up that hi-capacity .357.

I got to shoot a 7 shot Taurus, but the trigger angle was funny because of the larger frame. Made my hand hurt.

Posted by: adolfo_velasquez at November 19, 2008 12:45 AM (3J8qO)

56 SKS is an awesome piece of equipment. It is cheap (I paid $225 for my wooden Yugoslavian one), the ammo is cheap (I paid $4.50 for a box of 20), and it has minimal kick (just went to a range a few days ago with my dad). And they sight real well.

also, don't overlook the sheer thunderstick power of a Mosin Nagant M44. I bought one for $110. That fucker has some kick to it, but it is a definite message sender. Only problem is that it is bolt action, so it is for shooting the zombies when they are far away.

As for close up, Mossberg shotguns are good ideas, as are .38 revolvers (I love mine). The ammo is cheap for both. In a dire situation, stick to a revolver, as they don't jam.

Posted by: eddiebear at November 19, 2008 12:51 AM (fr6Xo)

57 Charter makes some kick ass 44 special snub noses for about $300, give or take. Only rub is that a box of 50 bullets is about $30 in STL. That is some real close quarter power.

Posted by: eddiebear at November 19, 2008 12:53 AM (fr6Xo)

58 Also, Taurus makes a 45 cal revolver (called the Judge I think) that runs about half the price of a magazine fed 45 ACP.

Posted by: eddiebear at November 19, 2008 12:55 AM (fr6Xo)

59 I just shot my recently purchased Mosin Nagant for the first time today. It's not the m44, but the longer version that they turned into a sniper rifle later. Crap, my shoulder is still bruised, but the shots grouped very well. I wish more companies made ammo for it.

If you want a pistol you can treat like a lawnmower, get a Glock. 1911's require care and training. To steal a line from Jeff Cooper, it's a pistolero's gun, not an Everyman's gun.

Skip the SOCOM II version of the M1A. The rails add way too much weight ant you don't need more than one rail, that for your SureFire light.

Posted by: SGT Dan at November 19, 2008 01:06 AM (Q6BTe)

61 I mentioned the Taurus because a friend of mine has the 607. I've shot it a few times and it's REALLY comfortable. I've even (sort of) accurate with it!

On the other hand, the Glock is a Glock. It's stupid durable. And it has a .22 conversion for cheap target practice.

On the 3rd hand, the Glock PLUS the conversion kit is a LOT more expensive than the 608. The 608 has a lifetime warranty but there's a difference betrween getting something fixed for the cost of shipping (and waiting a month or two to get it back) versus not breaking in the first place.

My wife thinks I am crazy, but I hit her back with the fact that she has three curling irons and a flat iron for her hair.

63 #62 Tphww. 10 day waiting periods. Here, we walk in, say "gimme that big fucker there!" wait 30 secs for background to come back saying you're one of the good guys, and yer out de door. Takes more time to decide on the gun you want.

I personally love Springfield XDs over Glocks. Better grip angle for a more natural shooting position. The most accurate pistol for me out of the box. Just saw a used XD9 for $375 in a pawn shop, where I buy most of my guns.

I love the Mini 14 too, even the AK. I was torn between them and an AR15. Bought the AR because of ONE thing. Compatibility. More morons will be toting the black guns, so parts and mags will be plentiful. Mags. That was the kicker. You can get them for the Mini, but you'll pay 3 times as much. More will have .223 ammo than 7.62x39.

As far as ammo for that Mosin Nagant (all versions), cheap ammo is plentiful online from places like ammunitiontogo and aimsurplus-dot-com. 7.62x54.

That Taurus Judge shoots .45 Colt and .410 shotgun shells. It's a great woods gun for snakes and bagging dinner. At close range that .410 blast will severely disable even the most committed zombie.

Is there any particular reason a rifle would be better?  Longer range perhaps?

I personally believe the Dems are still scared of gun control, the Supremes just upheld the 2nd this year and the bench hasn't changed since that happened.  Earlier this year I watched Sen. Schumer being interviewed and he really believed the gun control issue was one of the key factors involving the GOP takeover in 1994.  The Dems are going to be happy enough to let that issue lie undisturbed.  (Espically if the union workers for the AFL-CIO end up getting laid off, taking their guns would simply put all of those people in the GOP camp).

The Dems are in charge now and the economy is going to be a full time job because if they don't make improvements in the next year the setting will be ripe for another GOP takeover in 2010 and the Dems know it.

It looks to me as if National Healthcare or Health Reform is going to be the first item the Dems are going to go after.  Sure there are nuts on the Left that will want to go after Bush for war crimes and investigate the heck out of the Bush Admin; however, once Obama is sworn in he will be running for the middle because now it's all about legacy building and he surely doesn't want to be a 1 term President.

Been trying to get my hands on a Mossberg 500.  It was recommended by a few of my infantry friends.  Apparently it's pretty popular (especially right now), as it's sold out everywhere around here.

Any recommendations for a stand-in until the store restock, fellow morons?

#70 - Ranba Ral:

Have you checked out pawn shops in your area? call around because while some don't mention it, many will carry at least rifles and shotguns.

If you have checked, check again and frequently. stuff moves in and out of pawn shops quickly.

That being said, my recommendation would be a Remington 870 as a good compromise if you can't get your hands on a mossberg .

Someone else may say differently... just my 2¢

unless you call a 16 year old gangbanger who caps someone a child.

They do that exact thing. Most of the statistics treat gangbangers up to 18 as 'children'.

As for pistols, CZ makes nice stuff for low bux. My bro-in-law has a hi-cap 9mm accurized by CZ's custom shop that he let me shoot, and I have a nice bulls-eye target posted on my office wall with just about all the center shot out of it to show for it. Nice gun, no jams.

73 So if I were to have someone get me, say, an AR-15 for Christmas out of state could I have it shipped or how would that work.

A) It has to be legal to own it in your state, otherwise its considered a "strawman" purchase which is a Felony.

B) The person who buys it CAN'T ship it unless they themselves are a firearms dealer.  Again, felony.

C) YOU can't receive it unless YOU are a firearms dealer.  Again, felony.

D) The ONLY way for it to work is the sender needs to find a local dealer willing to ship it to a dealer in your area where you can pick it up.

The buyer will have to fill out the form 4473.  The dealer selling it will make a log book entry (all dealers maintain inventory logs) that its moving out of stock in a transfer.  If that's the same dealer who will be shipping it, the process is easier.  The dealer that receives it will make another log book entry that its came into his stock.  When you pick it up, another log entry will be made that it went out of stock to you.  You'll probably have to fill out a 4473 as well to receive it.

Most dealers will be willing to ship/receive...for a fee.  The paperwork takes time and they'll want to be paid for the hassle.  Expect a paperwork processing charge of maybe $25 on each end as well as the actual shipping cost.  The Post Office will NOT ship firearms.  It will have to go UPS ground.

75 #57, eddie bear. You fired that fucking thing? I have a Titanium Taurus in .357. It's snub nosed, 7 shot, with a ported barrel. Porting a 2' barrel?....Fired it once with Magnums. The next time I fire it will be a target within 9', and they will be dead. Fuck shooting this thing for fun. Great carry gun though.

76 There's no reason that everyone shouldn't own a Mosin-Nagant. The M44 I have was under $75 in like new condition. Never underestimate the intimidation factor of the hella-cool 18-inch fireball that comes out of the muzzle. 7.62x54R is just about the cheapest rifle cartidge in the world, due to the HUGE amount of Eastern Block surplus available. I'm stocking up now, expecting another 1000 rds soon, before The One bans importation of "armor-piercing foriegn military ammunition" or somesuch.

77 I shot one of those Taurus' ONCE. Kills on one end, wounds on the other. Never again.

78 I'm leaning towards either a Springfield Armory M1A SOCOM II (with the cluster Picatinny Rail) or a DSA, Inc. SA58 (FN FAL clone).  Any other ideas are welcome.

Get the SA58. Since it has a pistol grip, it's more likely to be considered an assault weapon under any future AWB.

It's not sexy like the EBRs or high-end bolt guns, but every household should have at least one .22LR rifle. The .22 is surprisingly useful, and ammo is dirt cheap of course.

One thing that I like to remember about .22s is that during the Battle of Britain in WWII, the Defense ministry seriously looked at arming the population with .22s to resist the Nazis if they invaded. They found that the .22 was ideal for such purposes, as it had pretty good penetration (to get through Wehrmacht greatcoats and uniforms), was easy to use, easy to shoot, and could be provided with large amounts of ammo cheaply. Let's face it, taking a couple of .22LRs to the chest will seriously fuck up your day.

79 A 2" .357 is goofy.  Terminal velocity can't be much better than a snubby .38, but it'll sure make a lot of noise.  Just load it up with .38's and leave it at that.

80 Y'know, I'm not a big gun booster, but as someone with a couple thousand HP of hydrocarbon-burning fun in the garage and driveway just waiting to hear what kind of eco-crank Obama puts in at the EPA, right now the Obama administration ain't lookin' too good for that 'freedom' thing.

81 Already ahead of you on this. I'm stripping down my Galaxie, selling off the extraneous and spare parts/transmissions I have on Ebay, and stocking up.

Gun show this weekend, close to a grand in cash on hand already.

Already picked me up one EBR (Evil Black Rifle).

Already got my CCW permit submitted.

Already got my C&R application ordered (they're on backorder, natch).

For a really good gun blog, go here to The Other Side of Kim:

Too bad he's quitting blogging in a couple weeks, but his archives are a treasure trove. That link will take you to page one of the archives of all his gun-related posts.

Posted by: Popcorn at November 19, 2008 03:04 PM (Tha0W)

84 #83 Popcorn, break-in will depend on the manufacturer and their procedures. Chrome-lined barrels typically don't need too much attention. Just go out and start blasting. Put 20 rounds through it. Then check the sights with groups of 5 or 10 and adjust if needed. Most are pretty accurate out of the box. You should have instructions on this with the gun if it came with iron sights. Scopes/holo sights will have their own instructions.

My non-chrome-lined barrel required 25 shots, cleaned between each shot. Then 80 more, cleaned every 10. Read your manual carefully.

Regardless of make, take your gun down (apart) before the first use and use a quality cleaning lubricant like Break Free on the action (bolt, carrier, and firing pin) and lube the trigger mechanism. A terrific amount of wear can occur the first time out if this isn't done. Field cleaning instructions should come with the gun.

Set your sights for "Hobo" and "Zombie" to get used to distances, and have some fun!

Bman, yeah, been checking the pawn shops, the gun shops, and the sporting goods stores in the area.

And thanks for the recommendation.  I'll look into it.

86 #84 Thanks!

It's a Bushmaster M4A3 "Patrolman's Carbine."  There are extensive instructions for battlesighting it, but no guidance on breaking it in.  It does have a chrome bore/chamber.  I may just call Bushmaster or wander over to their site and see what I can find.

Posted by: Popcorn at November 19, 2008 07:27 PM (Tha0W)

87 These smart guns will be collectable curios in the future.  I wonder how easy it would be to defeat the mechanism- bake the gun in an oven ? The Gov might put a radio chip in the mechanism so it can be deactivaed remotely.

Your reasoning makes sense, but I shot some cans of green beans and corn to test, and the .357 hp made the can into a torn metal strip of corn flecked modern art, while blowing veggies back at my shoes. The .38 hp just made large holes.

89 Three books I recommend everybody read right now...
'Patriots' by James Wesley, Rawles
'Molon Labe!' by Boston T. Party
and 'Unintended Consequences' by John Ross

These will give a good indication, a sort of 'worst case scenario' for what's bound to happen, and how best to deal with it.I especially like the way the characters in John Ross' book handled things...
