Coleman Wins by 215 Votes; Mandatory Recount to Begin

Franken is trying to hold off a recount until a few more (say, 216?) "previously uncounted" ballots appear:

The Franken campaign filed a brief Monday asking the Canvassing Board to consider including improperly rejected absentee ballots in today's official tally. Granting that request would make it practically impossible to proceed to the recount on Wednesday.

However, the state attorney general's office later issued a three-page opinion requested by Ritchie that said the board's job today is purely administrative, not to determine the eligibility of a voter or whether absentee ballots were properly accepted.

Wrote Assistant Attorney General Kenneth Raschke Jr.: "Courts that have reviewed this issue have opined that rejected absentee or provisional ballots are not cast in an election." Improperly rejected absentee ballots can be challenged in court, he wrote.

In two weeks he managed to whittle down Coleman's 725 vote lead. In the meantime, he's decided to simply act like he's won. Today he's in Washington, D.C. meeting with Senate Democrats.

3 Democrats have no ethics or morals. Considering every level of scrutiny in the upcoming Minnesota recount is a Democrat, we might as well get used to calling Al Franken "Senator Franken." Republicans never ever ever win close races. Democrats will always find just enough votes to cover the spread. How many do you need? Just let them know.

10 How could Minnesotans have created such a tight race? It's Al Fuckin' Franken fer cryin' out loud. One of the vilest, unstable pricks to enter politics. Yet Coleman, an honorable and capable representative, is going to have to squeak by such a loathsome charicature.

What is wrong with this country? Besides the ignorance, I mean. That electorate wouldn't dial in to listen to Franken rant on Air America yet they would vote for him as a Senator. Pure cognitive dissonance.

Couldn't have happened to a bigger jerk than Franken.  God himself is messing with Franken's head.  Franken might spend the rest of his miserable life trying to win this election.  How cool would that be?  Sometimes God gets it just right.

Franken:  I ran for the Senate.  Did I win or lose?!  Did I win or lose?!

God:  I'm not saying.

Franken:  What do you mean, you're not saying?  It was an election!  Someone wins, someone loses.  I had to do one or the other.

God:  Mmm . . . not necessarily.

Franken:  What do you mean, "not necessarily"?!  You can't flip a coin and have it land on its side!

God:  Oh, I've done that before!  You should have seen the looks on their faces!

Franken:  Oh, come on!  I did the whole election/running for office thing, and you're not even going to tell me if I won?  That's not fair!

God:  I'm not fair; I'm God.  And you shouldn't be one to talk about fairness, you rotten, little, win-at-any-cost, commie runt!

How could Minnesotans have created such a tight race?

Blame goes to the Republican Party leaders who created the rules that nominated McLame.  Obama had coattails; McLame had boat anchors good for sinking everyone with his run. This is what happens when 10% of the party base sits at home.

17 Vic,

OK.

I get the coattails dilemma, but that 10% of the base needs to drag its collective ass to vote down ticket. There's just no excuse, at all, not to work against Franken even if McCain cannot stir you from your chair. If that 10% calls itself "the base," then they are fooling themselves. They aren't "the base," they're "idiots."

I fully agree as I took my ass down to vote even risking having to stand in line in the damn rain.  Looking at the data for my State though, the base did get out to vote. That did not occur in MN. MN had roughly 100,000 fewer Republican voters in 2008.

Posted by: Vic at November 18, 2008 10:19 AM (Qd7GC)

21 How could this happen? Because voters are ignorant. Most who voted for the asshole probably didn't know anything about him. As long as he had a (D) beside his name was good enough for them. -sigh-

It's too bad, but a lot of voters on either side really need to get motivated to show up, and unfortuantely a lot of downticket folks were totally screwed this year.  All the way down to local level politics, Mccain failed his country this round.

That he hasn't backed up Sarah Palin means he's failing our country next round too, whether she's involved in the election or not.  He just doesn't stand with the right wing.

Typical of the Democraps response on this was my brother-in-law this weekend. He probably voted for the Bama and a straight Democrap ticket (he is currently living in NC). His wife is a real flaming liberal as well, he just sort of middle of the road squishy yuppie type.

Anyway when I discussed the massive Acorn and Dem voter fraud this election his response was “Bush stole Florida” and that old chestnut “everybody does it”.  I suspect that the “everybody does it” chestnut is what the average dumb ass in the country thinks.

56 No excuses - there is an excellent article in the WSJ today that sums up how I have been feeling lately. Give the liberals everything they want including a 60 seat senate and let them go wild for the next four years tearing themselves apart. Let's face it that is there nature.

The way I see it we only have a few more chances left to save this country before the time bomb of baby boomer demographics goes off. It is going to take a radical reduction in government services and promised benefits to stave off insolvency. The only way we are going to get a politician with the courage to tackle this is to go through the fires of a liberal hell. So bring on the pain. I can take all they got for the next four and then I am gunning for blood.

Guess I am officially a moron now.

Adding to the depression on how an unhinged nut like Franken can even come close to winning, I see the same parallel with Obama's actual win.  How can someone of such a shady background, complete with terrorist friends, utter lack of experience at anything other than community "organizing," total disdain for America, and hell bent on sending us down the Communist hellhole...how did this man get elected to anything...let alone the POTUS, for chrissakes???  The electorate has been so dumbed down, it's beyond frightening.

As for Frankenberry, I'm sure they'll magically find 216 votes, ALL for him.  Dems don't take no for an answer.  They throw fits and tantrums, file lawsuits and make a mockery of anything that stands in their way to power.

This braindead moron is in Washington because he know the fix is already in, this is Minnesota the democrats have already inserted the winning number of votes.

Hell when his name appeared on the ballot, he won, even if only two (live) people in the state voted for him, he won.  This place is a yellow dog democrat state with serious delusions of importance.  I moved here 2 years ago and still can not believe the stupidity and corruption.  They don't even try to hide it.

At this point in our history, I like to peaceably be able to split the United States into two separate but cooperative countries.  Based on the present priorities and philosophies, I imagine that the Red country would have a very strong military, low crime rate, a net native population increase through the years and would be somewhat boring to the socially liberal conservatives among us.  Of course,  they could just take a road trip / vacation  to the Blue country and participate in all the debauchery they desired.

For Democraps that is true. You can commit perjury in court and get off Scott free.  I gather that you both are college students???

HEY! only half of Minnesota is douchebags, please. This is a 51/49 blue state with the usual suspects in the 51%. It's much like my childhood state of Illinois. You've got the welfare douchebags in the big cities (Chicago, Minnecrapolis) and you've got the idiot welfare farmer douchebags out-state. The farmer idiots are the worst sort of hypocrits because they are all "church going, America loving, conservatives" .... except, "Don't mess with my farm supports!" Asshats!

Up here the Dims run as Democrat/Farm/Labor (DFL), also known as Dumb Fucking Liberals to those of us with real jobs who are paying for all this shit.

As a lifelong Minnesotan and current non-welfare recipient in Minneapolis, I agree with this assessment.

87 I'd just like to crankily point out that every one of those ten percent of Republicans who didn't vote for McCain because he was too liberal effectively voted for Obama.

I intend to remind people of this every time the damn fool does something noxious.

88 Point is- nearly all states have a contingent of liberals and sent at least one liberal to Congress.

This is why the constitutional amendment that changed the selection of senators from being appointed by the state legislatures to a popular vote is the worst amendment ever.  Can I get an 'amen' on that?
