Obama's already signalled that his foreign policy, aside from binding us closer to "global cooperation" (i.e. governance) and serving as an extension of his general welfare policy, is serving a backside to his "transformative" domestic agenda. The Democratic Party has never had a problem with global policing, having historically been its big-pushers, they simply want to be the ones in charge. Tying the U.S. to the rest of the world and drawing strength from international trends fits in with their domestic agenda (i.e., Kyoto), and view of themselves as the vanguard of progressive leadership worldwide.

In functional terms, Obama's going to coopt most of the Bush Agenda, which isn't all that conservative or radical compared to the 1990s, and adopt it as his own. Past opposition will go down the memory hole. The biggest exception is likely to be the increased (and self-defeating) emphasis on Afghanistan at the expense of Iraq. As well as a high profile, but probably mostly substance-free effort for "Middle East" peace.

Purple Avenger is right; although a Senate seat in deep blue country is not exactly vulnerable, backlashes do occur, and it takes a lot of money, time and energy to keep one of only 100 of the sweetest gigs in the world.  Much better to stay "safe," grab the job that will get you headlines every day without having to worry over water quality standards in Poughkeepsie or that ambitious DA in Buffalo who won't stop calling.  Get a position above the local fray, stay in the statosphere, after her successes in the primaries she doesn't need a demotion in profile--to paraphrase my own state's favorite sons, "she's bad, she's nationwide."

 Given an offer from her literal bete noire to meet-and-greet with every major pol in the world and upgrade that foreign policy resume, she would be foolish to forsake it.  The ground will be rough, but no matter what happens she can lay blame for anything that happens on His O-ness while leaking to the press that she, herself, favored a less, um, nuanced position.

After four years of limelight, she will step down, claiming that she has done all she can do in the position but has served the country "passionately and bravely,"  thus distancing herself from an Obama admin that must run for reelection in 2012 (no one with brains-or ambition-runs against a sitting President in the primaries).

So, she can't run against Him in 2012, but can keep the high profile until then.  If O loses in 2012, she can do nothing anyway (the GOP would have taken over).  But if he wins, she will be distanced from his government until 2016, when she can either challenge any Dem who seeks to succeed him or a Republican who won the Presidency away from a one-term Obama.

The O team has serious dirt on Bill Clinton - much bigger than philandering, something like influence-peddling.  They've told Hillary, but want it to come out in a controlled fashion during vetting for the SoS so as to make them look competent vetting their cabinet, in contrast to 1993.  When the news comes out, Hillary will have her opportunity to (1) dump Bill; (2) renounce Bill's relatively moderate policies to help move the party hard left and (3) polish her own image.

I am geuninely surprised by her decision.

I'm not.  Allow me to 'splain.

As I have been saying for going on a year now, the real power behind this mess is George Soros.  It is his money and his far left policies that have been driving the Democrat party with the Clintons since Bush first got elected.  Now, the strategy is coming to fruition.

Right after Bush won re-election, Soros and some of his pals started an funding far left groups (thank McCain/Feingold!) including the preeminent Center for American Progress, CAP.  He and Hillary install her stooge, John Podesta as the head of CAP.  He continues to fund other left wing groups such as MoveOn.org, Democracy Now, etc., through a sereis of cutouts.  These groups all appear to be indepedent but they amazingly all speak with one voice creating what seems to be a grassroots uprising against Bush and for "change".

When the '08 election roles around, Soros hedges his bets with Hillary and Obama, ultimately settling on Obama with most of his money and support.  But Hillary (and importantly, Bill are never far from his thoughts.  Magically, John Podesta is picked by Obama to head his transition team.  He joins Rahm Emanuel, ex-Clintonista, as the agents of change.

Actually, its not so surprising as CAP becomes the defacto organization providing policy statement to the Obama team.

But why Hillary?  There is no more important cabinet position than Sec of State.  The Sec of State is the international face of the US and negotiates for US interests abroad.  This is exactly what Soros wants.  He wants to change America's postion in the world for both his own warped views on Open Societies but mostly for cash.  This is something that interests Bill Clinton too.  He has made tens of millions since he left office in shady international deals.  Most notably among those deals was Kazakhstan where he went against US policy and even against his wife to support un-democratic policies of Nursltan Nazarbayev.  Why?  Money.  Lots and lots of money from Frank Giustra, a Candian Billionare who wanted the Uranium rights in Kazakhstan.  Giustra got them and Clinton got $31 million for his fundraising boondoogle.
