So if you want to look at tv by comparison, the tv stations around the country are for the most part locally owned.  The major networks do tend to own their bigger local staions in places like NY, Chicago, Philly, etc.  But local tv stations tend to truly be local.

Over the past 20 years, the same is not true with radio.  Local (am talk) radio stations have overwhelmingly become owned by a couple of big national companies.

What are the radio stations who make money on these progams going to do?  Do they think they will continue to make money broadcasting drivil that nobody wants to hear?  No.  What will the local businesses think - the one's who have found adversiting on popular radio programs effective in selling their products and services?  Will they be served by this change?  No. 

Great idea - shut down free speech, ruin profitable businesses (radio stations) and end a positive adversiting medium for local businesses.  Wow, this is good government working for the people.

Does this new commandment affect sports programming, also? If I'm tuning in to the local affiliate for ESPN radio and they're talking about the NFL and airing the Dallas Cowboys games, must they also broadcast high school women's basketball?

Must a Christian broadcasting network here in Texas also broadcast local Mexican devil worship?

If it's a music station, must it balance Bruce Springsteen with a garage band from Pflugerville, TX?

When I lived in New York City, Manhattan cable tv had three local access channels. No one watched it because it was all complete crap. Saturday Night Live even parodied "The Black Israelite Hour."

There's certainly a place for local programming on tv and on the radio--it's already there! When I listen to Rush Limbaugh, he has open line Fridays and many of the calls are from my home state of Texas. At the top and bottom of every hour, for about five minutes (or 10 minutes in every 60-minute period), there's news--and it's mostly local news. Most of the Rush stations have local hosts before or after Rush, and on the weekends as well.

Mandatory "localism" is nothing more or nothing less than censorship.

Radio waves belong to the people and not big companies who cut checks to Republican politicians. I sympathize. I politely ask the NPR-listening cabbie to turn the radio off. These guys are all from East Africa and 99 out of 100 are great guys. I've never had one think a customer should be made to listen; it's your cab 'til you get out. And I tip an extra buck if they had to turn off NPR.

Since I listen to Rush and Lars Larson, et al, and rejoice in the freedom of speech and sharing of opinions that occurs so naturally on AM, it's always uncanny how NPR *sounds* when I hear it. Arrogant, pontificating, as if these are the most enlightened people in the world, doing the proletariat a favor by gracing us with their superior taste and knowledge and opinions. It's so frighteningly conformist and programmed that I picture tinny loudspeakers on a rice field, blaring propaganda to the workers. The people who listen to NPR are robots, all living in the same weird-ass information bubble. It's truly scary, but especially so in Seattle.

Two points of logic that you seem to be missing: 

1.) It's not that a doctrine of "localism" stands in contrast to a per se "evil" corporate syndication structure, it's that oftentime what a "local" community desires is precisely what is offered from a corporate entity like Clear Channel.  You seem to be confusing, in the Romantic/Defender of the little guy/yes, I'm in my twenties manner so infectious to Lefties, that what is a local or Mom n' Pop offering is preferrable to a large out-of-state store that offers more products at a better price simply because of the vendor.   Small=good, Big=bad.  This is a stereotype you have accepted wholesale, without evidence, and in complete contradiction to market principles, i.e., "local" radio, which is determined by city certainly has the freedom to choose a product made or marketed outside of its bounderies in the same way that folks choose McDonald's over a local burger joint---that's the nature of true choice.

2.) You seem to equate local "minority" broadcasting purely with skin color or ethnicity.  This would presumably mean conservatives could meet such "locality" standards established by an Obama Congress with the "Michael Steele Show featuring Alan Keyes!"  or the "Bobby Jindal Show featuring Johnny Tibedeoux and his Crazy Cajuns!"  In other words, we can find locals of the preferable skin color to meet "local" standards comforming to your wishes, but that's not the point...is it?   How you move "viewpoint" into a discriminatory category will be your  next move.

But we can always counter with subterfuge, media coercion and a politically charged, narrow reading of statutory mandates.  After all, in eight years we've learned a lot!

101 There is a word that I see used repeatedly whose meaning is deceptive.  That word is "minority."  What is a minority exactly?  What makes someone a minority?  Is it a choice, or is it something one is born with?

The term tends to be used to describe anyone who isn't white and male.  Well given that there are slightly more women than men, and that blacks, asians, etc, etc, make up a sizable percentage of the population, doesn't that mean that white males are themselves a minority group?

A black person is not the same as an asian person, who is not the same as a woman (of any color) who is not the same as someone who speaks Spanish at home, who is not the same as some other kind of person.  Yet all are cast as "minorities."

My point in writing this is that this term is damaging to society as a whole.  Lumping a collection of vastly different people into one arbitrary group and setting them up as some kind of poster-child for imaginary and exaggerated grievances only serves to help the left in its efforts to destroy the country.  The left loves to invent categories of second class citizens in order to have someone to rabble rouse, and that is exactly what the term "minority" was coined to do; create a sense of separateness that could be exploited to induce resentment.  Divide and conquer.

There are no "minority" interests to be served by attacking talk radio because the very category of minoirty is a canard.  But then that is the entire point.  Expecting leftists to be either rational or honest is a complete waste of time.  They are married to an ideology that is hostile to this nation and its values.  They are the enemy, and don't forget it.
