Good News...McCain And Obama Looking For Ways To Work Together UPDATE: Joint Statement Released

Look, I'm on record as saying it's important that winning and losing candidates observe some basic formalities after an election. However, I worry that McCain maybe taking this beyond what politeness and decorum require.

Obama said that he and McCain were "just gonna have a good conversation about how we can do some work together to fix up the country. And also to offer thanks to Sen. McCain for the outstanding service he's already rendered."

When asked if he planned to help the Obama administration, McCain replied, "obviously."

It could just be my animosity for McCain getting the better of me but it seems some people are pretty excited about McCain and Obama working together.

Lynn Tramonte, policy director at the pro-immigration group America's Voice, expressed hope for a new stab at US immigration reform after conservative opposition sank a law designed to bring 12 million illegals out of the shadows.

"President-elect Obama and Senator McCain have been champions of immigration reform in the past, and they would make a formidable team going forward," she said.

Awesome!

So, let the guessing begin...what issue will be the first on which McCain joins with Democrats in helping to shut down a filibuster (assuming Democrats don't wind up with 60 seats)? There are a lot of issues to chose from. It could be some sort of cap and trade system, new regulations to take care of those bastards on Wall Street, immigration, judges or maybe even taxes.

UPDATE: Below the fold, their joint statement.

"At this defining moment in history, we believe that Americans of all parties want and need their leaders to come together and change the bad habits of Washington so that we can solve the common and urgent challenges of our time. It is in this spirit that we had a productive conversation today about the need to launch a new era of reform where we take on government waste and bitter partisanship in Washington in order to restore trust in government, and bring back prosperity and opportunity for every hardworking American family. We hope to work together in the days and months ahead on critical challenges like solving our financial crisis, creating a new energy economy, and protecting our nation’s security."

Here's the thing, 'partisanship' is not a bad thing. In fact, it can be very healthy. When one party wants to do something staggeringly stupid, it's the job of the other party to STOP THEM, not join them in pushing the country over the cliff.

I wish McCain would shut up about 'government waste'. Yeah, that's a problem but a small one compared to government encroachment into areas it doesn't belong in the first place. No amount of efficiency makes me want the government to get involved in regulating the economy to stop 'global warming', 'fix' education or a host of other issues.

1 Ugh.  Whatever it is can't be good for the country.

2 McDole needs to be reminded that he's nothing more than one of many GOP senators, and if anything, after his campaign his losing status lowers his importance.

(I wish he'd done like the real Dole did and resigned from the Senate in June. Not only would we not have him around now making a pest of himself, but he would have avoided the whole September financial meltdown and been in a position to hammer Senator Government for standing around and voting "present".)

OK, maybe my memory is going, but I don't recall Al Gore or John Kerry sitting down with Bush and talking about working together and supporting him.

Until McCain picked Palin I was convinced that he didn't really want to be president. With Palin's pick, despite all the bad press, he gained momentum again. Then he did the stupid bailout stuff and also refused to bring up real issues with Obama. So I'm back to thinking McCain never wanted to be president.

p.s. McCain, here's a hint, Obama is NOT a good man. Supporting him tarnishes you.

7 Recall, McCain's name was prominently floated as a potential VP for Kerry in 2004.

Is it possible that McCain was/is a closet Dem and had no intentions of seriously running for President, and that his entire campaign was a clever ruse?  Am I that cynical?  Tell me to stop, Tinfoil chaffs me so..

8   It's a trick question:  McCain is going to switch his party affiliation to Democratic and help them cement their newly stolen (Franken) 60 vote supermajority in the Senate.

Yep that sounds about right.

McCain is showing his cowardice by not defending his OWN F*CKING RUNNING MATE for god's sake.  What the hell else should we expect this man to do than put our party in the toilet forever?

McCain is pathetic, as well as the current crop of GOP.  Fire ALL OF THEM and bring in new ones.  A president Obama should be incentive enough to do that.

Dream on, the McCain shot his bolt in November and doesn't have the same pull anymore.  Back then he was the legitimate contender, had a sizable following in the party and strong support from the National Review types.  His loss in the 08 election nullified all that.

He'll block our filibuster for sure and he'll give cover to some of the One's most outrageous actions but as to any leadership role or having any popular support within the Republician party, he is a party of one.

What? No qualifiers there? Recent titular head of the GOP cannot muster a "Yes, but..."

While it's possible the press left off some context, the demeanor and history of McCain suggest that he really does mean to help Obama. Which would be bad.

So John McCain wants to be Obama's bitch so that he can look like an honorable guy. That's not really surprising.

I don't know if we conservatives would have been any less dissapointed with a McCain presidency than we will be with an Obama presidency. Losing the election was tough and I hate that Obama is going to be president, but I'm not really heartbroken that McCain won't be president. And that's coming from someone who busted his butt to campagin for the republican ticket.

31 Very simple:

Obama wants McCain to be the lead dog on matters controversial to Republicans. Nothing new here, but who actually grabs credit for any eventual outcomes will be Obama not McCain.

Not sure what the quid pro quo is for McCain, but I'm sure one was discussed.

President McCain would have ended up being about 1/2 to 2/3 of what President Obama will be.  That is, 1/2 to 2/3 of a disaster, which is pretty damn bad in itself.  We would have been pressured to support and defend such a disasterous President McCain, but now we are free from that.

Is the freedom resulting from McCain's loss worth it?  As bad as President McCain would have been, it is very possibly worth it.

This is disgusting and fully indicative of why I could not nor did not support or vote for McCain. The man is an execrable, back-stabbing liberal who has made an entire career out of criticizing Republicans and making deals with Democrats.

Example: After the 2000 election and his defeat by Bush, McCain immediately mucked up the transition by distracting the administration with campaign finance reform. It doesn't matter that his own legislation ended up costing him any chance of winning an election 8 years later.

Now, in 2008, after running an incompetent campaign, being deserted by conservatives and losing, he's sticking it in their eyes yet once again. This man has no honor.

The huge thing Obama and McCain will agree on is the Fairness Doctrine.  They will both push it to their parties.  I read somewhere that McCain blamed

79 the only enjoyment one might get out of the Dems getting their 60 is the sight of McCain wandering around looking for someone to be "bipartisan" with and being told that his services aren't needed anymore.

After the way McCain got soooooo0 angry at a radio host who introduced him in Cincinati (who, being a Republican, said anti-democrat things)

That was Bill Cunningham.  It wasn't his saying of anti-dem things.  It was the fact that he dared to repeatedly use Obama's middlename when talking about him.  I believe the context of his usage was about media refusal to talk about.  McCain denounced him without even having known what he said though.  And that really pissed Willy off.

Lynn Tramonte, policy director at the pro-immigration group America's Voice

Uh, correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe "pro-immigration" and "America's Voice" are at odds with each other.  Guess Lynn didn't get the memo.

At this defining moment in history, we believe that Americans of all parties want and need their leaders to come together and change the bad habits of Washington

We blew that one the minute we were left with Obama & McCain to choose from. (Yeah, ended the sentence w/ a preposition.  Apologies.)

CHICAGO – President-elect Barack Obama and former Republican rival John McCain pledged Monday to work together on ways to change Washington's "bad habits," though aides to both men said it was unlikely McCain would serve in an Obama Cabinet.

Bad habits? How about starting with breaking the habit of voting for socialists for president?

90 If McCain goes back on his promise to put enforcement first, and amnesty  second, he will lose the last vestiges of integrity as a politician in my mind. I will still honor him for his military service, but his political service at that point would become a complete joke. The "Straight Talk Express" will mean nothing if he supports amnesty first, under any conditions.

This gets to one other quirky thought I had. Maybe McCain wanted Obama to win. Maybe he voted for Obama himself. He seems to like him so much. McCain has protected Obama from Ayers, Wright, etc... almost as much as the liberal media.

Posted by: Indythinker at November 17, 2008 05:51 PM (xtj/V)

91 Fuck him. Maybe a long time ago he was a warrior. The fight died inside him long ago. Yeah, I said it. What has he done for ME today!...I fought for him, got ostracised at work (union shop), pissed off family etc... and he showed me no long knives. He can rest on his honor, while I sit on a shit sandwich him and barry make for me. Fuck him.

After the 2000 election and his defeat by Bush, McCain immediately mucked up the transition by distracting the administration with campaign finance reform. It doesn't matter that his own legislation ended up costing him any chance of winning an election 8 years later.

Posted by: TheSoothsayer at November 17, 2008 02:36 PM (jJ86L)

Nice point. What's more, Bush could have just vetoed McCain-Feingold (Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002). It passed the Senate by a non-veto-proof majority, 60-40. Had Bush opposed the law, fewer Republicans would have voted for it.

Bush made a serious enemy in 2000, and McCain got his revenge with his law. In a tragic manner, that law cost him his own shot at the presidency.
