My understanding and usage of "meh" is in an Italian-American context. See the scene in "The Godfather" when Sollozzo comes to meet Don Corleone and the family to ask for money and protection.
"Meh, Don Corleone. I need a man with...." etc. Posted by: J.J. Sefton at November 17, 2008 11:34 AM (zpaDL) 13

It'll be interesting to see what the official policy of the Saudi Princes is regarding rules of engagement for pirates. If they treat them like they do other irritants (you know, uncovered female faces, infidels, etc); then you'd expect...well, heads to roll; as it were.

This is more media BS. If you read the actual article that quotes Newt the headline doesn’t match what he said. He said “She’s not going to be the de facto leader.” And later he said that she we would be one among many Republican governors who are out there.
I’ll say this now, if her or someone with a similar record isn’t nominated AND they throw another squishy SOB who tries to go center or reach across the aisle, you can kiss the Republican Party goodbye. Posted by: Vic at November 17, 2008 11:53 AM (Qd7GC) 27

As for the pirates taking the Saudi ship this and the spread of the arab terrorist is just a symptom of the times. The world powers of the 17th and 18th centuries learned that one could not simply try to police the seas and hang or kill pirates and the “terrorists” of the day. They are like cockroaches and liberal trolls, you can exterminate one of the SOBs and he will be replaced by 40 more just like him.
You must go in to the countries that sponsor these weasels and either get them to police that assholes are you have to go in the country, get rid of the government there and police them yourself.
And when I say “police” them, I mean that in the context of “policing” an area to remove trash; permanent removal. Do them like the old days, hang them and place them in cage gibbetsfor all to see while the crows eat them. Posted by: Vic at November 17, 2008 12:05 PM (Qd7GC) 31
I am really interested in what the Saudis will do about these pirates. The ship could be Saudi owned, but the crew could be of a different nationality altogether. Who owns the oil? The Saudis? However, the Saudis might want to look all compassionate now so they can rape Israel after The Precious negotiates to give the Golan Heights back to Hamas. They'd call 1-800-USA-NAVY. The Saudis have some pretty good special forces of their own, but they don't have the logistical capability for surveillance, insertion, etc on a major sea operation. Posted by: Purple Avenger at November 17, 2008 12:36 PM (OqXyp) 53

OT .. a lil humor Barack Obama, Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey were flying on Obama's private plane.
Obama looked at Oprah, chuckled and said, 'You know, I could throw a $1,000 bill out of the window right now and make somebody very happy.
Oprah shrugged her shoulders and replied, 'I could throw ten $100 bills out of the window and make ten people very happy.
Michelle added, 'That being the case, I could throw one hundred $10 bills out of the window and make a hundred people very happy.
Hearing their exchange, the pilot rolled his eyes and said to his co-pilot, 'Such big-shots back there.

Meh, I don't know where to stick this so I'm gonna stick it here (that's what he said...) Anyway, stopped by Starbucks this morning for my usual re-fueling and this week's icky free "Good" piece of crapweasel that they are distributing is entitled "National Service" With the sub-head "What can you do for your country?" There's a logo on it, not sure if it is from something else, or they made it up, but it is red and it has crossed shovels the words "national service" and the letters N and S. (A side note for those that don't know what Good is "This is a Good Sheet. It's a weekly series breaking down an important issue to help make sense of the world around us. Exclusively available at Starbucks" It also says "Now that the election is over, we'll be looking at how our new president will be changing the country and what we all can do to help.") Anyway, open the sheet up and there's a picture of JFK with a quotation in red coming out of his mouth, in all caps it says "YOU WANT TO HELP" and then there's some facts about volunteering and then on the right side of the page there's a handy chart of how you can help, either by joining the armed forces, joining the Peace Corps, joining the Foreign Service, Joining Americorps, or joining Senior Corps. And then there's cute little icons about each service, like if there's physical requirements (hey, guess what the icon for foreign service as to whether there's physical says "nada" that's right gang, your fat asses can join the foreign service and see the world!) National service = Good. Got it? Am I being paranoid again or does this seem like propoganda to help smooth the resistence to this idea? THEN they will fire up the Royal Saudi Navy to escort future tankers thru the region.
The RSNF really isn't equipped for that kind of escort mission. They're pretty light on what could be considered open sea well armed escort vessels (under a dozen) and have concentrated mostly on smaller coastal and mine sweeping operations targeted at keeping the Persian Gulf and Red Sea lanes open. In the past, they've relied on the US Navy for heavy lifting. Posted by: Purple Avenger at November 17, 2008 01:11 PM (OqXyp) 71

If I were foolish enough to try this stunt, I'd be looking to steal the cargo. Purple, It is not easy to steal 2 million barrels of oil. That will need a good amount of offloading equipment and storage tanks in Somalia. This cannot be arranged without the complicity of Somali authorities and cannot be hidden from the world. If you decide to steal it by carting off small quantities, it will take years to unload the oil. Posted by: Tushar at November 17, 2008 01:58 PM (PTWes) 85

Saudis will probably be willing to pay money equal to 1/5th the cargo to secure the cargo and the ship. Stealing the cargo is messy and will probably be the last resort. How much does a typical bbl 200K tanker cost? Must be a few tens of millions atleast, even if it is old. Odd this - the APRS has the Sirius Star (A8NA7) under way off Durban, South Africa heading SE to the horn, not ported in Somalia. (they've also done some creative editing on its position - for instance the last position is 2008-05-08 17:54:46 UTC (193d 2h49m ago) and thats roughly in the time frame of when it was commissioned in May of this year. Also there has been no packets transmitted in the last 48 hours. But if you look at the ships who've 'seen' her she's been sighted off the South African coast as recently as yesterday.) As for stealing its cargo - the pirates would not have risked commandeering this vessel unless there was a plan (one can't drink oil - its gotta go somewhere). Oil prices are up and a major producer is short one vessel now - who benefits from a disruption of the oil flow? The CIA, natch! And its only 2mil barrels this time - how many more 2million barrel runs are now lost? (OK, not really the CIA, but this isn't just a target of opportunity scenario) Posted by: blogRot at November 17, 2008 03:58 PM (EKMxC) 103

In Re: the tanker. It is for ransom. Otherwise, what the devil are you going to do with a 1,000 ft. long ship? There are very few ports that can berth it, or discharge the cargo. And all of those ports will be full of people that do not like ships being pirated. You caught the car. Goody for you. Now what? Posted by: Mikey NTH at November 17, 2008 05:38 PM (TUWci) 107
You will need something that can hold liquids I saw a Jewish TV documentary, Sein-something-or-other IIRC, that suggested buying large rubber balls from Kramerica Inc. for such transportation, Tushar. And there's a Firkin pub chain in Ontario, toby. Posted by: andycanuck at November 17, 2008 06:38 PM (6rN+7) 108
Three ways to stop the piracy.
Simplest don't pay. The pirates are taking the ships for ransom not for the cargo. They hold the ships in port while things are negotiated. Drawbacks: Ships will be sunk and people killed until the pirates give up trying. A little more complex: kill the pirates. Drawbacks: they are hard to catch, use lots of small boats in an area with lots of small boat traffic. You really don't know who is the pirate until they strike. There is no government to hit the pirates from the shore side. You need lots of warships with lots of small boat crews inspecting many many small boats. Most of the ships seized are from countries that do not have large navies. 2nd Amendment method: Let the ships carry heavier weapons. Right now the ships are being outgunned. A smart big ship to small boat missile would be ideal in this case. Don't know if anything suitable exists but it would help the crews. I think I read they cannot even use .50 cal machine guns, but this may be wrong. The small boats can use grenade launchers because lets face it, how do miss a tanker, but it is tougher to hit a fast moving small boat and probably tough to sink one with only small arms. Didn't AQ promise some festivities soon? Scuttling an oil tanker could cause some serious problems depending on where it was done. Also, there were post 9/11 fears of someone ramming a tanker into a port facility.
Could be some awesome TV in the coming days.... Posted by: Fa Cube Itches at November 17, 2008 08:07 PM (LxjSI) 110
The way I see it, get the oil tanker back, then start round the clock bombing of all known and suspected pirate ports until they're just one big charred crater. Then figure out how to air-deploy mines over the area so it's just one big explosive deathtrap. Not exactly the precision strike modern militaries love so much, but meh.
