Obama To Pursue "Ambitious" Peace Plan In Israel Involving Divided Jeruselum [Nice Deb]

TimesOnline reports:

Barack Obama is to pursue an ambitious peace plan in the Middle East involving the recognition of Israel by the Arab world in exchange for its withdrawal to pre-1967 borders, according to sources close to America’s president-elect.

Obama intends to throw his support behind a 2002 Saudi peace initiative endorsed by the Arab League and backed by Tzipi Livni, the Israeli foreign minister and leader of the ruling Kadima party.

The proposal gives Israel an effective veto on the return of Arab refugees expelled in 1948 while requiring it to restore the Golan Heights to Syria and allow the Palestinians to establish a state capital in east Jerusalem.

This, of course, completely contradicts the "poor phrasing" that he used in front of AIPAC earlier this year:

It should be noted that 77% of American Jews voted for Obama.

A bipartisan group of senior foreign policy advisers urged Obama to give the Arab plan top priority immediately after his election victory. They included Lee Hamilton, the former co-chairman of the Iraq Study Group, and Zbigniew Brzezinski, a Democrat former national security adviser. Brzezinski will give an address tomorrow at Chatham House, the international relations think tank, in London.

Brent Scowcroft, a Republican former national security adviser, joined in the appeal. He said last week that the Middle East was the most troublesome area in the world and that an early start to the Palestinian peace process was “a way to psychologically change the mood of the region”.

Tzipi Livni, the leader of Kadima, which favors the plan is running against Benjamin Netanyahu, the leader of Likud. She's the front-runner in the elections due in February.

Netanyahu is adamantly against withdrawing to borders that predate the Six Day war in 1967:

"Giving Hamas half of Jerusalem will make the rest of Jerusalem unlivable," Netanyahu said. "Giving up Judea and Samaria will transfer the areas controlling the coastal plain into the hands of Hamas, leading to Kassams…on Tel Aviv."

According to the government's plans, Israel will pull back to the 67' borders. Obviously, this is the plan and any attempts to disguise it are futile," he said. "We are facing an exact replica of the government's plan at the Camp David summit in 2000."

"This is no way to make peace," the former prime minister lamented.

Obama reportedly told Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, when he visited Ramallah, last July: “The Israelis would be crazy not to accept this initiative. It would give them peace with the Muslim world from Indonesia to Morocco.”

11 Well, this is just great.  If you pray, pray for the innocent people living in Israel, because it's going to get ugly.

Obama actually thinks that giving terrorists enormously valuable stuff because they commited scary bombings is a good plan.  He actually thinks that this will give Israel peace.  He actually thinks that Israel won't be bombed within 24 hours of this deal being reached.

The terrorists and the Arab governments have played the whole 'we can't control the bombings... give us stuff and we'll try!' card for decades.  What does Israel get for this enormous loss?

Imagine if we gave Al Qaida all of Manhattan in exchange for them not bombing any more skyscrapers.  I know... I'm preaching to the choir.

I have had a bad feeling ever since we lost the election.  I'm not crying or full of rage... just very nervous that we're in for some Carter style problems.

12 Palestinians have a state. It's called Jordan.

And Egypt and Syria ought to be opening their doors to Palestinian refugees before attempting to negotiate back the losses the Israelis inflicted upon them in wars they began.

14 When I was in high school in the nineties, every morning during homeroom, we would watch channel one news. Its basically a news program geared to high school kids and no surprise, it totally leans left, or it did in the nineties. Anyhoo, they would always have reports on Israel and Palestine. They would make damn sure that Israel was always painted as the agressor and Palestine as the innocent forgotten victims. Well, I kind of found it strange, that most of the violence would come from Palenstian suicide bombers. I swear some people do not have any common sense. Oh and btw, I went to an all girl Catholic High School, where Republicans were hated by the staff.

Obama really wants was in the middle east.

“The Israelis would be crazy not to accept this initiative. It would give them peace with the Muslim world from Indonesia to Morocco.”

The Israelis would be crazy to believe this crap. I call this Emamuel's doing. He was behind the Oslo accords and they achieved crap.

There's peace in the middle east only when Israel dominates militarily. How come we don't hear anymore about the fence? It use to make me laugh to read how horrible the fence was. Why? Because there were no more terrorist attacks?

Obama thinks that Israel giving up their land will bring peace with the Muslim world?

That would only work if Muslims wanted Israeli land.  They don't give a fuck about land.

Muslims want Jews obliterated from the face of the Earth.  If they get some land out of the deal, that's just a bonus.

That is yet another reason Obama is so fucking dangerous.  He doesn't understand that Islamo-fascists want a world free from non-Islamo-fascists.  They will stop at nothing, and will kill as many people, and will destroy as much of humankind as they possibly can to achieve their goal.

Obama is a naive fool.

49 Pam Gellar, that amazing lady over at Atlas Shrugs, refers to Jews who support left-wing positions on Islamic appeasement--both here and in Israel--as 'jewicidal'. Example: Allowing the 'right of return' to Palestinians who have been steeped in antisemitism since infancy would be jewicidal. Voting as a strongly Democratic bloc even after the Carter and Clinton traditions of currying favor with blood-soaked terrorists is jewicidal. Believing the Arabs in general and Palestinians in particular would be mollified or diverted from their genocidal ambitions by any land giveaway concession is jewicidal. I'm disappointed to find Lee Hamilton advocating this plan, btw. I'm from Indiana and always liked him. I didn't think he was an idiot.

50 The Muslims from Indonesia to Morocco want every Jew on earth dead, period. Anything else is just a means to that end.

Israel has had decades to either withdraw to the indefensible pre-1967 borders - and be attacked again by the same people who attacked them last time - or to expel the Arabs from the land they conquered specifically to serve as a buffer zone. Only one of these two solutions actually works.

It's up to the Israelis to save themselves. Everyone hates them except the U.S. and we haven't exactly been helpful, so they shouldn't worry about "world opinion". Just do it. Take out Iran's nuclear program, and when the Palestinians start attacking, take them out as well, one way or another. Any other course is voluntary self-genocide.

What did anyone expect? Obama, as a Muslim, who was born a Muslim, raised a Muslim, spent years in the Mosque, learned the Arabic call to prayer in a Madrassa, to the point where he can recite it now perfectly, is a Muslim.

A Muslim who hates Jews, and Whites, and the United States. And is President. Say good bye to Israel. It's over. Eventually, so will we be over. 66 Israel is facing extinction. They had better abandon any hope of help from America or Europe as they are on their own. IMHO Obama will cut off arms and funding to Israel given any reasonable excuse.

The Israeli Arabs (Muslim and Christian) are increasing their population considerably faster than the Jewish Israeli's are and their loyalties are less than certain, to be kind. Once their population reaches a point where they control the swing vote in the Knesset, no Israeli government will be able to act without their blessing.

Israel is living on borrowed time without Obama added into the equation. The Muslim Brotherhood is growing in popularity in Egypt and the Egyptian Armed Forces are much better trained and equipped than they ever have been in relation to Israel. Syria is once again starting to flex its muscles in Lebanon and the American alliance could be in jeopardy.

Now Obama wants Israel to retreat to the 1967 borders which would mean the settlers would be forced to leave, after all the peace-loving Palestinians will not tolerate a Jew next door to them.

It looks to me like a mega cluster fuck in the making!

So Israel gives back land (including all her strategically vital high ground) and gets the promise of peace from Islamic governments that are all one coup away from becoming radical Islamic Fascist states?  Even if somehow the Arab Governments agreed, who is going to prevent the Palestinians from inviting Iran in - Obama?  Netanyahu is 100% right. If Israel agrees to this Hamasistan will be raining rockets on Tel Aviv and every other Israeli city in less than 6 months.  And when Israel has to go war again, Obama will do - what?

This isn't a peace plan.  This is suicide on the installment plan.  Obama is either too stupid to know this or he does know and is OK with it.  Given he went to a Jew and White hating church for 20 years, I'll go with the latter.

Posted by: BattleofthePyramids at November 16, 2008 04:08 AM (55f0G)

98 Ya know what?  I've supported Israel my entire life.  Stuck up for 'em against any and all antisemitism, even from those close to me.  Etc. etc. yadda yadda.

I'm having trouble remembering why, now.

Fuck 'em.  They voted 77% for Obama?  Seriously, fuck 'em.  I hereby withdraw my unearned support for Israel, American Jews, etc. etc.

They can have my support back when they abandon socialism/communism (I've practically made a career out of forcing myself to forget that 5 out of 9 original Soviet politburo members were Jewish) and vote >50% -against- Democrats and -against- the Left.  They do that, I'll support 'em again.

But we on the Right have been supporting Israel almost monolithically, while the Left has been unilaterally throwing them overboard, and what have we gotten in return?  77% of the vote to Obama, I don't even want to -think- about how much money they must've sent him too.  And let's not even start counting how many of the insufferably Obama-worshipping media comes from that 77%?

Fuck it.  Seriously.  The Jews can have me back when they start abandoning the Left.  Until then, I'm basically just going to consider them leftists, and Israel just another leftist nation that I don't much care for and don't feel any need to defend.

Can someone give me any reason I should feel otherwise?

Land for peace is what Israel did in 1957, when it gave the Sinai to Egypt. It was amply rewarded 10 years later by a war launched from the Sinai.

Also, "Although the land-for-peace doctrine seems to offer a mutually advantageous settlement, it is a vicious deception. Peace requires the cessation of Arab violence, particularly terrorism. To attain it, Israel is supposed to surrender territories crucial to its continued security--territories that were won in the war instigated by Arab countries in 1967. To attain land, however, the Arabs are supposed to concede nothing; they need only withdraw their use of force. Like any aggressor, they are, in essence, holding the Israelis hostage. And like any victim, Israel, by paying the ransom, gains no value that it did not already have a right to."

100 And so it begins.

101 There are some very good reasons why the return to 1967 borders has not been agreed to by Israel.  This is just as true today as it was back in 1970 or so, when the first of the peace deals was worked out, only to be broken.

The only peace that has worked out over time was the Israel/Egypt one.  Sadat was a different type of Arab leader who actually wanted peace rather than the destruction of Israel.

Today, as Hamas and Hizbollah hold elective office, it is difficult to see who Obama is going to negotiate with to take a reasonable position.  You can talk all you want about Saudi Arabia and Jordan, but it is Iran (through its proxies) and Syria who are the players.  They are committed to the elimination of Israel.

These people are not going for a real peace, this is folly.

"Land for peace" will not work until the "peace" part becomes just as important as the "land" part.

Israel has NEVER got anything from the Arabs when they have made concessions, not since the State was created. The only thing that would make most of those radical assholes happy is for the entire population of Israel to commit ritual suicide. That however wouldn’t make them happy for long. They would be just like the aging green hippies we have now who are the core of the “green” movement. They became addicted to their behavior during the anti-war years and when the war was gone they just had to find something else to get in the streets about.

Israel has said time and time again they will never give up the Golan Heights or Jerusalem.  The stupid bastard O will only alienate the ONLY ally we have in the region and maybe find out that his actions bring about nothing but more strife. Animals like those in Hamas only see two kinds of people; radical Muslim allies or enemies that should be dead.

There is one good possibility that would come out of the stupid O and his suggestions. When Israel realizes that the O has made the USA and enemy then the namby-pamby asswipes in State will no longer have any kind of a restraining influence on them and they can unleash the dogs when those rockets come in.

I have been waiting for that for a long time so Mr. President-elect Vomit, get out some more stupid and send some more assholes to negotiate.

104 "Giving up Judea and Samaria will transfer the areas controlling the coastal plain into the hands of Hamas, leading to Kassams…on Tel Aviv."

American Jews are mostly of the reform variety, and liberal in politics and theology. As you move into the conservative and orthodox branches they become more conservative in politics etc. That is a bit of a generalization, but fairly true. We have a synagogue here that my wife and I visit because we are interested in the Jewish roots of Christianity. It is a reform synangogue and it's quite interesting to watch some of the very nice people try to resolve their support of politicians who are socially liberal (which they like) but much less supportive of Israel, than say Rush Limbaugh etc. You can tell it is a brain bender.

This gives the lie to the phrase bi-partisanship.  There are plenty of Republicans who consider Israel a pimple causing irritation to our relations with the rest of the world.  The Baker/Hamilton team was full of them.

125 So what?  It's just what Olmert is now saying and looks like common sense.  A deal like that is certainly in the interest of the United States of America.  It's also in the interest of Israel not to be held hostage by a few fanatic settlers way out in the far reaches of the West Bank

Ehud Olmert: At the moment, I'd like to do some soul-searching on behalf of the nation of Israel.... In a few years, my grandchildren will ask what their grandfather did, what kind of country we have bequeathed them. I said it five years ago, in an interview with Yedioth Ahronoth, and I'll say it to you today: we have a window of opportunity—a short amount of time before we enter an extremely dangerous situation—in which to take a historic step in our relations with the Palestinians and a historic step in our relations with the Syrians. In both instances, the decision we have to make is the decision we've spent forty years refusing to look at with our eyes open.

We must make these decisions, and yet we are not prepared to say to ourselves, "Yes, this is what we must do." We must reach an agreement with the Palestinians, meaning a withdrawal from nearly all, if not all, of the [occupied] territories. Some percentage of these territories would remain in our hands, but we must give the Palestinians the same percentage [of territory elsewhere]—without this, there will be no peace.

Yedioth Ahronoth: Including Jerusalem?

Ehud Olmert: Including Jerusalem—with, I'd imagine, special arrangements made for the Temple Mount and the holy/historical sites. Whoever talks seriously about security in Jerusalem, and about not wanting tractors and bulldozers to crush the legs of his best friends—as happened to a close friend of mine, who lost a leg when a terrorist ran him over on a tractor—must be willing to relinquish parts of Jerusalem. [In July 2008, Jerusalem saw two separate attacks involving construction vehicles operated by Arab East Jerusalemites.]

Whoever wants to maintain control over the entire city will have to absorb 270,000 Arabs into the borders of Israel proper. This won't do. We need to make a decision. This decision is difficult, awful, a decision that contradicts our natural instincts, our deepest yearnings, our collective memories, and the prayers of the nation of Israel for the past two thousand years.

I was the first person who wanted to maintain Israeli control over the entire city. I confess. I'm not trying to retroactively justify what I've done for the past thirty-five years. For a significant portion of those years I wasn't ready to contemplate the depth of this reality.

Cardinal Foley you are correct, Obama's election is apocalyptic and destructive and soon we will all be crying bitter tears when we recognize the depth of our betrayal  at the Thugocracy's hands.

128 Israel has NEVER got anything from the Arabs when they have made concessions, not since the State was created.

Actually, Israel has relatively decent, albeit "unofficial" relations with Saudi Arabia and Kuwait these days as well as low profile trade relationships.

This happened when the Kingdom and Kuwait effectively cut the palis loose and told them they were on their own after they elected Hamas.

Israel also got a large contract recently from the Turks for upgrade work on a bunch of Turkish armor (of US origin).

Posted by: Purple Avenger at November 16, 2008 12:17 PM (OqXyp)

129 It's neither in Israel's interest or our interest. Olmert is out because of his mismanagement of the war and pending charges of bribery. The arabs have never been peaceful and rewarding them for it only guarantees more attacks on Israel.

Don't forget that most of Europe's foreign ministers and a good segment of the general population think that Hitler didn't finish the job.  One of the reasons "our allies don't like us anymore" under George W. Bush is Bush's unequivocal commitment to Israel.  Iraq was just a convenient excuse for the Eurotrash to cover their real animosity, which is toward the Jews and Israel, and Bush's affinity for them.  So when you hear the liberals yapping about "restoring America's image in the world" remember what they are REALLY talking about is selling out Israel.

Olmert has lost his mind. The Golan Heights and historical  Judea and Samaria (the real name for the fictional "west bank"), is strategic territory. What the media and pali lovers now call the west bank was known anciently as the mountains of Israel, it's not just any ground. The force holding those areas has an absolute strategic advantage in any conflict.

And you can write this down, whatever agreement that might be reached, will be declared not enough by all Arab parties involed, as a justification for continued violence. They don't want peace, they want the destruction of the Jewish state. Treaty or no treaty.

Unfortunately, Israel does not have the DP. I would love them to threaten to execute a 100 pali prisoners if the execute this one guy.

135 Considering what an Obama Administration's going to do to this country domestically, I don't really give a damn. Israeli isn't going to have the Golan or all of Jerusalem? BFD. They'll still have the massive conventional superiority over any Arab Coalition that allowed them to take both in the first place.

The only reason they'll give them up is if on some level they agree with the Obama Administration, there's nothing it can do to truly force them. If they think that'll make peace (it probably won't), it's their own damn fault. Either way, aside from a potential demographic time bomb in Israeli proper, the country isn't going anywhere. It may be good politics since defense of Israel plays well domestically, but the "Conservative" reflexive defense of everything the Israeli right wing says isn't smart. They have their own interests.

136 -Says the half-Jew. For those for whom the identity politics shit matters (hint, it doesn't, but there's my card!).

Posted by: MlR at November 16, 2008 01:08 PM (40F+f)

137 Which isn't to say it doesn't demonstrate that Obama's a lying douche, which was already known by anyone paying attention.

Posted by: MlR at November 16, 2008 01:09 PM (40F+f)

138 So what?  It's just what Olmert is now saying and looks like common sense.  A deal like that is certainly in the interest of the United States of America.  It's also in the interest of Israel not to be held hostage by a few fanatic settlers way out in the far reaches of the West Bank.

What in the holy name of God would lead you to believe that citing Olmert is an asset for just about any argument over anything?

The guy's a corrupt opportunist who has shown himself to be incompetent at handling Israel's security and has only lasted this long through his own shamelessness--anyone else with a sense of honor would have resigned after all his f' ups a long time ago.

As far as "a few fanatic settlers way out in the far reaches of the West Bank" - this is not the West Bank we're talking about giving up--it's East Jerusalem, plus the Golan Heights, plus other areas.

It's a nice theory . . . in some fantasy world where Israel's current enemies have only said they want a return to the '67 borders and then everything will be cool.

Unfortunately, that's not the world we're currently in.  The world we're currently in involves Israel's enemies saying they want to wipe it off the map.  All you have to do to believe this is idiotic is to assume their telling the truth.  To believe this is a good deal, you have to believe they're lying.  And if you believe they're lying, then you have no reason to take their word on this deal.

140 Israel has NEVER got anything from the Arabs when they have made concessions, not since the State was created.

...

"Israel also got a large contract recently from the Turks for upgrade work on a bunch of Turkish armor (of US origin)."

Turks aren't Arabs.  The militantly secular Turkish Republic has historically been Israel's best friend in the (nominally) Muslim world, though that's been dramatically undercut in the past 10-15 years or so as Islamist parties have developed and come to power in Turkey.

142 Judea and Samaria (the real name for the fictional "west bank"), is strategic territory. What the media and pali lovers now call the west bank was known anciently as the mountains of Israel, it's not just any ground.

You have to roll your eyes at the invocation of "Judea and Samaria."  The last time that "Judea and Samaria" was Jewish was about the same time the Celts ruled in Anatolia, not to mention numerous other intervening historical displacements, including the end of the Aztec Empire and East Prussia.  I don't think the Celts have a claim over Anatolia now and the Prussians are not going back to Konigsberg.  History moves on, and unless you are ready to give Florida back to the Seminoles, don't plead to ancient blood-and-soil BS.

Just as Arab rulers now recognize that Israel is a fact and it's time to move on with some face-saving, Israel can't move the million - 2 million Arabs out of the west bank.  The Livni/Abdullah/Obama idea is the right one:  draw the boundaries to accommodate the Israeli border settlements, take a cut out of the Negev and a (walled) corridor between Gaza and the WB for the Arabs, guarantee the recognition of Israel, and wrap it all up in a Lebanon-Syria-Israel-Palestine-Jordan-Egypt free trade agreement.  This is achievable, gives a chance at peace and security of Israel, and takes the issue off the table for Arab and Iranian rabble-rousers to use against US.  Of course, if you're a moron praying for the Apocalypse, you might not agree.

143 Just as Arab rulers now recognize that Israel is a fact...

Again, icus, that statement is backed by what?

144

ahhhhh the joy of pali propoganda

Posted by: Wolverine at November 16, 2008 02:52 PM (/Zcox)

145 Again, icus, that statement is backed by what?

Backed by:

1.  Years of Egyptian recognition and accomodation.  You hear Hebrew spoken at Egyptian tourist sites more than American English, as there are more Israeli tourists than American ones.

2.  Syrian willingness to talk and make a deal.

3.  King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia proposed the outlines of the deal we are talking about.

4.  King Abdullah of Jordan is willing to talk and make a deal.  Personally, I'd like to see him retake sovereignty over the WB, but I doubt he wants it.

5.  Morocco, Tunisia have no problems with Israel now.  The "new" Ghaddafi is ready to sign on, I'm sure.

Arab rulers know that the Palestinian issue now helps the extremists who want to overthrow their regimes more than it helps them maintain power.

As PA noted above, there is a long history of low-key commercial and political contacts between Arab states and Israel.  The anti-Israel rhetoric is just that, rhetoric.

Everyone wants a deal, but as much as the Arabs are held back by their extremists, the Israelis are held back by the fanatics in small parties who get seats in the Knesset through their proportional representation system and hold the large parties hostage in coalition government negotiations.

"Obama reportedly told Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, when he visited Ramallah, last July: “The Israelis would be crazy not to accept this initiative. It would give them peace with the Muslim world from Indonesia to Morocco.”"

The rest of the quote reads, "No, really, I'm stupid enough to believe that."

Posted by: SpideyTerry at November 16, 2008 03:21 PM (Obcvi)

148 The Israelis are supposed to have an estimated 150 to 200 nuclear warheads, and God-Knows-What biological capabilities, with which to exercise a "Samson" option.

Is Obama going to warn them that, in event of their being overrun or Haifa and Tel Aviv vanishing below mushroom clouds,
"DON'T YOU DARE OVERREACT!"?

Icus, the idea that because somebody's willing to "talk" means they're cool with you, and willing to accept you, brings up a number of historical analogies (including one in particular) that I'm sure you can think of and I don't think it's necessary for me to reference them - particularly when Arab leaders say other things when they're talking in Arabic.

More importantly, though (and I realize they aren't Arab, but re: Israel's safety):  If Iran attacks Israel, with what army is Saudi Arabia and Jordan going to defend it? (Presuming they would)

153 Follow up to earlier post (# 14 here.  After all, if we are going to sell them out, let's consider consequences ...

An exercise for the students:

As Israeli Defense Force Chief of Staff ) or whatever the rank is), you are ordered to design a “Samson” option to (in the event of Holocaust II) take down as many of the bastards with you as possible, given 150 to 200 nuclear warheads, and possibly enormous biological expertise.

What would you consider?

Would “those bastards” include countries (including so-called allies) that just stood by and let it happen?

What would really do the most damage to them?

(All of this assuminging that you will not go gently into the good night.)

Icus:

What Arabs say in English to Americans or Israelis means nothing.  What matters is what they say to their own people in Arabic.  Again, Israel is being asked to give up the only strategically defensible ground she has, in exchange for a piece of paper.  And if the Palistinians or Iranians decide later to make war, who are the Arabs going to side with?  To ask this question is to answer it. No, Netanyahu is right.  As soon as the Palistinians get the West Bank, Hamas takes over, invites Iran in, and starts rocket and mortar bombardments of all Israeli cities.

Posted by: BattleofthePyramids at November 16, 2008 08:32 PM (Yic+G)

156 The terrorists and the Arab governments have played the whole 'we can't control the bombings... give us stuff and we'll try!' card for decades.  What does Israel get for this enormous loss?

Posted by: Shill at November 16, 2008 12:17 AM (8jYMc)

A guy I know was in the IDF patrols escorting the last settlers our of Gaza and said they were fired on, I forget if it was with guns or Qassams, as they were withdrawing. Nuff said, Hamas makes its intentions painfully clear to anyone who's not blinded by Jew-hatred oops I mean legitimate criticism of Israeli policies.

"I can't see Israel agreeing to cede the Golan Heights or even one stone of Jerusalem. Nor are the arabs going to be allowed back. It's all crazy talk."

From a strategic and tactical viewpoint, giving back the Golan heights is folly.  However, a number of Israeli governments, from almost the moment the Golan was taken, have offered the Golan as part of a peace agreement with Syria.
