| Two Democratic Senatorial Aides Nabbed for Child Porn; Media Predictably Uninterested in "Trend"Personally I don't think it's a trend, or indicative of Democratic sexual habits, either. Some people are wired wrong, and it really doesn't matter what philosophy such people embrace -- if they get off on child porn, they're going to get off on child porn. But I do happen to know for a fact that had these been Republicans, the media would be greatly interested in the "trend." When the media bothers to explain such obvious bias at all, they always claim that there is an objective reason to publicize Republican sexual scandals and downplay Democratic ones -- "hypocrisy," of course. Those Puritanical scolds the Republicans are always nattering on about sexual morality, so of course the media gives such stories more play. This "hypocrisy" excuse doesn't work in most cases, and it certainly doesn't work here. For these Democrats to be free of the taint of hypocrisy, it would have to be true that the Democratic Party's ideology was latitudinarian on child porn-- which, to my understanding, it is not. Is the media claiming the Democratic Party isn't as opposed to child porn as Republicans? If so, let us have a report on that -- I'm sure the public would love to know that one party isn't quite on board with this whole anti-child-porn program. But of course that's not really the case. The Democratic Party is fairly united against child porn. So why does the hypocrisy rationale not demand these Democrats be pilloried not just for their disgusting crimes, but for their political hypocrisy to boot? I see this all the time -- Well, of course we in the media publicize Republican extramarital affairs because Republicans are against such affairs and are therefore hypocrites. Again, point me to any Democrat claiming it's the party's position to be in favor of marital infidelity, or at that it's no big deal, and I'll concede the "hypocrisy" argument. But as far as I know the Democrats are down on extramarital affairs, too. So, either both parties are "hypocrites" on this score, or else I want the media to inform me that the Democratic Party takes a chill attitude towards sexual infidelity. Either/or. The media can't have it both ways -- they cannot insist that Democrats are just as moral and concerned about values when it's convenient (usually at election time) and then suddenly claim that only Republican sexual scandals are fit for reportage because only Republicans believe in such things as shutting down child porn and remaining faithful in marriage. To try to claim otherwise would be... hypocritical, no? Similar Hypocrisy: Hot Air wants to know what the media's reaction would have been to the popularization of Fascist idolatory of George Bush. Probably not quite the same sort of loving tribute they give to Obama's tryptych maker.Comments1

Well, I think its a crutch to blame the media bias. It's always been there and always will be because people who are both drawn to and able to get jobs in the MSM are left leaning. Has been since time immemorial.......look at some coverage of the Hitler-Stalin deal in the NYT for some historical reference, and the position of the Dems on that deal. Reagan had no media help at all....no Fox News, no talk radio, no blogs. The GOP now has all three, and therefore is BETTER positioned than in the 70's and 80's when Reagan made his move. Accordingly, the crutch of media bias is a red herring, the real issue is the lack of GOP leadership...... The days of Newt, Tom and Armey look great in comparision to today. By the MSM's logic, you should advocate no standards on sexual matters.

When the Republicans and conservatives are finally run out of town (and Congress), and there's no one in Washington but Democrats, will sexual scandals involving politicians be reported? At all?

This "hypocrisy" excuse doesn't work in most cases, and it certainly doesn't work here. If it did, then the wealth and grotesque environmental "footprints" of Kennedy(s), Gore, Edwards, Hollywood, et al would be MSM stories. They aren't.
The really funny thing is, every time a GOP guy gets caught in some perversion the MSM has to defend it’s newsworthiness by reminding everyone that the Right is the side against perverts. Um, ouch?

Perhaps it is because aide does not equal congressman?
Had an aide to Mark Foley been found sex-chatting with Congressional Pages, I don't think we would have heard that much about it. Especially if Foley had immediately fired him/her. Foley was an actual congressman and members of his party apparently knew of it and did nothing. So maybe those are factors as well. Posted by: Seattle Slough at November 14, 2008 05:18 PM (H5l9d) 10

Note: I can neither confirm, nor deny, that Andrew Sullivan is a past member of our organization, despite reports of such membership in the press. In a statement released recently, Mr. Sullivan did state, however, that he had inspected NAMBLA's membership records "with a fine toothed comb" in an effort to determine whether Trig Palin was actually a 37 year old midget who enjoyed full membership in NAMBLA until his "Mom", famous Chill-Billy VPilf Nominee Sarah Palin, was "tapped by John McCain" (heh!) as his running mate. I don't know that it's useful at this point to highlight media bias. People who still don't see it after this last election will never see it, and those that claim it doesn't exist will never say it does. Unless it's to say the media is horribly biased against liberals. There's just not any folks who hold that view in good faith to make it worth arguing the point.

"The last week or so they have been active in kissing Obama’s ass all day."
Media wants access. They need it to create content, obviously their only salable product. The trick, and this goes to FOXNews most acutely as the "Right-leaning" visual news dissemination service, is to balance the news gathering concessions with the loss/gain in audience share - mostly the conservative one. Remember what CNN gave up to get access to Hussein/Iraq? It sold its soul to the devil and is forever tainted by its propaganda disguised as "journalism." Sure, people still watch them, but the taint is unavoidable. FOXNews is in the midst of a similar dilemma. How far is it willing to go to maintain access to what we have observed is a petty and vindictive man in Obama? Probably further than we would like. Coincidentally, their recent leftward shift, even as subtly done as I think it has been (though my perception is probably biased) has matched exactly with the amount of time I have dedicated to old movies and the AoS lifestyle. Go figure. Right-leaning media outlets have a real economic choice to make: move Left and fight for scraps among all the other Obama worshipers while carrying the taint (access probabilities-wise) of being on the right edge of Left's ideological spectrum, or stay Right and/or move righter and partake in the medium rare porterhouse steak that awaits. I'd suggest consulting the likes of Ann Coulter to see whether to take the red pill or the blue one. Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at November 14, 2008 06:27 PM (sI5Ho) 28

In the MSM worldview, aren't Democrats supposed to be the standard bearers for -financial- "ethics", meaning they preach loudest about resistance to lobbyists and kickbacks and the "corrupting influence of money on politics"?
If that's the case, shouldn't the "hypocrisy" argument dictate that they should hit Democrats especially hard on those matters when they're caught on the take? Cause I don't think it's quite working out that way. See Jefferson, Dodd, Reid, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. Qwinn Posted by: Qwinn at November 14, 2008 06:35 PM (3FVXC) 30

"What right wing media outlets? Also, this implies there are more than one."
For the airwaves/cable, you're right. Not really much of a menu is there? I was thinking more generically in media as a whole. Assuming the "Fairness Doctrine" isn't forthcoming, and that's a huge concession, there's rightwing radio. The wild, wild web has the NatRevO, for example, too. It's not doctrinaire conservative (while conservative enough) but clearly at a crux as to which way it will trend. Obviously there are pockets of conservatism in media but clearly in a minority position. It just seems to me that there are huge opportunities in staying Right. Consider, for example, country music. A bit on the edge as far as a media entity, but it remains one nonetheless. I'd say it was overwhelmingly right and it, as a considerable branch of the industry, seems to do very well. An aberration like the Dixie Chicks doesn't disprove the rule. Were country music to move philosophically Left, it would tank economically. The Right votes with its pocket book here and abandons the left. So yeah, outlets could be considered a stretch of a term, but they do exist and could grow. The question remains, "Are there enough capitalists willing to eschew classical power brokers in the media industries as they're operated and circumvent the ingrained Leftism?" Murdoch the Elder figured this out. The Younger I don't think has. Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at November 14, 2008 07:37 PM (sI5Ho) 35

I don't know that it's useful at this point to highlight media bias. People who still don't see it after this last election will never see it, and those that claim it doesn't exist will never say it does. Read via a link on Instapundit that the New York Times is technically insolvent; facing $800 million in loans due next May with only $400 million in the bank. To the extent that hammering the MSMs for liberal/democrat bias is helping to drive them into bankruptcy by disaffecting their increasingly skeptical readers and watchers is positive. If your point is that concentrating on such criticism is a potential distraction that does nothing to rebuild conservatism in the Republican Party or win elections, I agee. Part of me likes to think the media--newspapers especially--didn't just jump in the tank for Obama for the sake of ideology. I find it strangely comforting some of them may have been motivated for more old-fashioned reasons, such as financial desperation. It's easier to get my head around it, somehow. But we really don’t have to ask the question, do we. The answer is that Democrats ARE more tolerant of sexual aberrations, they just pretend not to be. It’s the tribute vice pays to virtue.
Of course at some point in the not-too-distant-future the rights of child porn viewers and participants will be as great a cause as same-sex marriage is today. The old slogans are simply going to have to be updated from “get your prying eyes out of my bedroom” to “get your prying eyes out of the crib.”
Any social movement that can demonize people who own SUVs and riot for the gay marriage is not about to stop at a little toddler sex. Posted by: Moneyrunner at November 15, 2008 04:05 PM (uAekG) 48
