Breathtaking Video: The Surge Worked

The before and after is simply remarkable.

Call it the Unbroken Windows theory of political pacification: Intact floor-to-ceiling glass windows simply cannot exist in a warzone.

More at Hot Air, including Michael Yon's assessment that the War is Over.

And Yon hit the panic button pre-surge stating that we were losing the war, and were doomed to lose it if nothing changed. So he's not a relentless cheerleader sort.

It was an astonishment to me that John McCain only said "the surge worked, you were wrong" to Barack Obama during the debates. He should have said: "The surge worked, and thanks to the strategy I advocated and you opposed, we'll most likely have the bulk of our fighting forces out of Iraq well ahead of your timetable -- and in noble victory, rather than catastrophic defeat. So for those of you who want this war to end, I have only two words: You're welcome."

Okay, not the last part. That's kind of a David Spade thing.

But the part before that, certainly.

More Yon: at Confederate Yankee.

1 Ignorance is amazing as America elected Obama supposedly because of his superior judgement on the Iraq war.

One in which he was completely and utterly wrong.

As has been said many times, failure seems to be the most important qualification to a liberal for a position.

Lets see liberals elected:

Obama...
who in his only executive experience failed miserable in leading the Annanberg Foundation by wasting nearly 150 million dollars and in his only attempt at foreign policy was dangerousily incompentant.

Biden...
who has been on the wrong side of nearly every foreign policy debate for the past 40 years and wanted to partition Iraq into a three genocide-inducing regions with mass deportation included.

Iran, China, N. Korea and the Russians are laughing their arses off right now!  This is going to be a very dangerous 4 years.

2 McCain's position on the surge was irrelevant because the surge was so successful that Iraq wasn't a huge issue with voters.  That'll teach him to try and fix problems.

It is much better to create problems then convince the voting public you are the only one that can fix it.

3 That video is remarkable. I do think John McCain pretty much did say what you said, he just didn't communicate it as well as you did....like a few other things.

Due to the economic issues the last months of the election, we didn't hear much about Iraq. That is a shame. I think the people of Iraq feel better about their lives now that they are safe. With national security comes economic prosperity.

For the U.S., all the economic concerns will be moot without safety.

The people voted.

5 John McCain was proud to have lost to the First Black President of the US. He seems to have forgiven the communists who beat him up in Vietnam, too. Too much humility makes for *the* most boring Republican candidate of all time.

Why are there NATO standard rounds if the rest of NATO isn't allowed to discharge their weapons when pointed toward thugs?

That was a technical question, I know, so maybe more policy oriented? ... why doesn't the USMC drop rations to the Taliban and ammo to the ISAFs forces who are barricaded at inconvenient locations throughout A'stan.

Let our allies get their food any way they want after that, but if they are giving away the bullets at less than .5Mach, then the supplies of ammo get smaller, and the supplies of food get bigger on the next drops, follow that pattern and eventually even a crack squad of German border guards would begin to see that getting sauerbratten for lunch is going to be a kinetic event.

10 That's kind of a David Spade thing.

Actually, it was that guy who did the news with Tina Fey who did the computer-tech character on SNL with the "You're Welcome" catchphrase, and who I care so little about that I won't even Google his name, although I remember that he's taking over for Conan O'Br -- JIMMY FALLON -- that's the guy.

11 While I am extremely glad about this, all I can think is "where the f*ck was this 2 weeks ago when it might have mattered to stop a communist/socialist/Marxist from becoming our President?"

Then again, there were about 100 things that should have made people realize that Obama was bad news and 60+ million people shrugged them all off and voted enthusiastically for him anyway.

*sigh*

That aside, this is simply wonderful and amazing. Our US military men and women and their leaders all the way up the chain of command deserve so much of our honor, praise and respect for the amazing success story that is modern-day Iraq. Yes, there were mistakes, but looking at this overall mission as a whole, this was a resounding success. Think about it, this was all done in 5+ years. If one puts aside partisan politics and just thinks about the enormity of that, it is simply amazing.

12 Why the hell not "the last thing"?  Although completely out of character for Maverick-the-Candidate (and thus pointing us inexorably towards the reason for his lashing at the hands of The One [wait, was that racist?]), it would have been the absolutely perfect summation of his actual stand in the matter.  And can you imagine the jaws dropping in news rooms across America if he'd done so?  I'd have flipped to MS-NBC immediately, just for the shear pleasure of watching Olberdouche's head explode.

Face it, folks, McCain sucked as a candidate. He'd have gotten McGoverned had he not brought Sarah Palin on board. For a guy who was portrayed as a fighter he certainly didn't live up to the rep. I was disappointed in pretty much everything about his candidacy; he played it like someone who wasn't really trying to win. The ONLY thing he intentionally did right was to make Palin VP.

On the other hand, he singlehandedly killed public campaign financing, but he apparently didn't do that intentionally--it was just another consequence of his failed campaign. I keep thinking we had a choice between the bad and the worse, and Americans chose the worse. The only thing that would have been worse than McCain winning was McCain losing.

52% of America made a very serious mistake on Nov. 4. 100% of America will get to pay for it. Life isn't easy; it's harder when you're stupid.

Posted by: mac at November 14, 2008 05:03 PM (km5b4)

15 McCain was a gambit; trading off stark conservatism for the possibility to win nationally in the current political enviroment.

In retrospect, it was a fucking atrocious strategy. McCain in theory was [so much] stronger than McCain in praxis.

Not only was the presidency lost, but he's perhaps irreparably tarnished conservatism for a decade or longer due to his utter inability to defend or promote any semblance of a coherent conservative policy: in any respect.

Obama will take credit for Iraq; it'll happen. The average person hasn't heard about it for months and assumes the worst. When the media once again starts reporting on it due to Obama withdrawing forces and showing the drastic difference since 2006/2007, people will correlate it with him.

Bush 'needs' to step-up and help save the conservative movement (and his legacy) which has supported him.

W, by virtue of his position, still welds enough clout to solidify the surge as a Conservative policy. He has 2 months:

Form a story arc and narrative. Use the office, hold a national policy address on prime-time and after a brief intro of the surge and harking back to 2007, show a video of the progress. Put together some PR pieces. Hold press conferences. Travel to Iraq, tour Baghdad. Later have a nationally covered ceremony decorating Gens. Petraeus and Ordinario for their service, et al.

Just don't let the surge become another Obama 'success', like tax cuts and fiscal policy.

#2 said:  "It is much better to create problems then convince the voting public you are the only one that can fix it."

You just summed up Obama's entire platform!  He was just getting started ruining the economy (along with his buddies) with that whole Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac fiasco...

He has all sorts of other tricks up the sleeve of his empty suit....

19 all I can think is "where the f*ck was this 2 weeks ago

The evidence has been obvious for well over 6 months.  It was obvious to me over a year ago that Iraq was a win.  All you need to do was apply a noise filter to the media's "if it bleeds it leads" reporting and look towards long term trends and shifts in attitude.  The media reports high frequency low amplitude signals, not low frequency high amplitude signals.

McCain made a conscious foolish decision to not hammer Obama's judgment over this and leverage that into a larger attack on his knowledge of all things military in general.
