Yes We Can! Are Flying Cars Just Around The Corner?

Now that the mad geniuses at DARPA are involved, I'm thinking maybe.

Darpa says its Cessna-sized combo vehicle should be able to cruise at 60 MPH on land, and 150 MPH in the air. It should be able to stay aloft for two hours on a tank of fuel. "The challenge," the agency says, "is to define the major components of such a vehicle that would be suitable for military scouting and personnel transport missions, yet are small enough, inexpensive enough, and easy enough to operate that it can be widely used."

Thanks Obama!

Flying cars aren't my personal dream, I already have a pilots license. Now, if lightsabers ever hit the market, give me a call. Still, I know a lot of you here long for this and gas is getting cheaper so, keep hope alive!

The current crop of mobile morons can't keep a car between the lines or avoid running into fixed objects and each other while only dealing in two dimensions. How the hell anyone can actually believe they'll do as well or better in an aircraft is beyond me. BTW... I'm a licensed pilot and I don't see how two-thirds of them would pass the tests. Perhaps it'll be like Ultra-lites, where there's no real license. Better make sure your life insurance is paid up and add steel deflectors to the roof of your house. It'll be raining idiot bits.

36 Chuck is absolutely correct.  I prefer to fly low in any event.  And hereabouts, folks, we have the roads to make that happen.  Well-paved, lightly-used highways, few people.  It is gearhead heaven.  I think there's about six ramps the hundred miles between C and S Bluffs on I29.

How many buses lined up in front of each ramp? With that kind of straight, pristine asphalt for your acceleration, you could easily jump 15-20 buses, without breaking a sweat.

Posted by: GarandFan at November 13, 2008 06:37 PM (eJ32B)

47

Nawh, kemp, that's an optical illusion.

What they actually do is readjust the axis of the earths rotation and speed or slow it as neccessary to match the plane. That's why only 1 can land at a time.

Planes don't slow down or stop. Ever.

Posted by: Entropy at November 13, 2008 06:52 PM (HgAV0)

48 Silly me, I had no idea airplanes could actually stop on a runway. Silly, silly me.

Seriously, the vast majority of "avoided" auto accidents are accomplished by applying brakes. Show me an aircraft that can go from 150 to 0 in, say, 10 seconds or so, IN MID AIR-- then we'll talk.
