Prosecutor Characterizes Congress as a "Sanctuary for Crime"

This was too good to pass up, even if it's a relatively dry Speech or Debate Clause issue. Retiring U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi (R-AZ) has been indicted on 35 counts of conspiracy, wire fraud, extortion, money laundering and insurance fraud. I don't know much about the case, but I love it when Congresscritters try and fall back on the Speech or Debate Clause to stave off prosecutions.

Renzi's lawyers contend that he is protected from prosecution for any activities related to the legislative process. Prosecutors argue that promising future votes for shady federal land swaps isn't a protected "legislative act." Then comes the good part:

Prosecutors replied in court papers filed late last week that Renzi "distorts the intent and plain meaning" of the clause and argues in essence that he "is the fortunate denizen of a 'sanctuary for crime.'"

In Related News: The Fourth Circuit just denied Democratic Congressman William "Cold Cash Is My Middle Name" Jefferson's Speech or Debate Clause claim (PDF). The Court held that Jefferson was trying to apply the clause so broadly that it would be impossible to charge a congressman with a crime. His trial can now go forward, unless he appeals to the Supreme Court.

Incidentally, the good Democrats of New Orleans just handily helped him win the primary run-off; he is a shoo-in for re-election to the "sanctuary for crime."

1 It would be nice to have a law that mandates that a member of Congress who is convicted of a crime will automatically receive the maximum sentence.  Betrayal of the public trust and all that.

Did you see Ted Nugent's piece in Human Evernts via Hot Air?

My specialty is making Fedzilla punks squirm and turn into a puddle of sweat and drool. Therefore, in the spirit of famous butt kickers Generals Chesty Puller and George Patton, I say we launch an attack on all fronts. Uncle Ted hereby declares it is open season on RINOs. No bag limits or permits required. Conservative ideas, arguments and votes are the weapons we will use. Hunt them down and shine a blazing light on these RINO turncoat cockroaches. Zero in the "we the people" crosshairs of your voting assault weapon and aim for the RINO pumpstation. Double tap center mass. Whack em and stack em, track em and hack em, pack em and give em no slack. Let's do to the RINO beasts what we did to the passenger pigeon. Force out of the Republican Party out the subspecies known as RINOs.

We must not make the mistake of keeping the GOP tent so big that there’s room for RINOs. They are in the business of producing conservative defeats. Instead, join me in the new Conservative Revolution. Let's go out and win another one for the Gipper.

That's the guy but he's a Democrat so they don't get the same scrutiny do they. But anyway Reid got kinda rich on some Lost Wages acreage that got some favorable treatment in the Beltway.

It helps when the media is keeping a cone of silence around you, and hectoring the Justice Department and the President to prevent it from purging itself of the party hacks left from the last administration, who won't prosecute any Dem very hard or very fast.

The Democratic Party has become a criminal enterprise, and it is completely taking over control of legitimate government authority through a vicious cycle of corruption that generates ever more staggering amounts of illegally raised money, to be used to reward ever mor staggering degrees of corruption.

Let me repeat: The Democratic Party has become a criminal enterprise.  And they just elected a President who won't do a thing about it.

24 No shit, Sherlock.

We seriously needed to clean the place out before a civil war starts, but it's too late now.  When the financial mess finally hits the "real" economy, "mark my words..." the only thing that will keep people in line will be some kind of "...international crisis, generated crisis".

Cold Cash Jefferson and the Vomit will try to delay until Jindal is up for reelection and then they think they will be able to steal enough votes to get a Dem in.

However, Jefferson could fight being excluded from Congress just like his predecessor, Adam Clayton Powell.

27 Bullshit is expected from democrats, but the republican party needs to take a very harsh stance with their own members when they do. Otherwise the"they all do it" reply proves true. In the past people have looked the other way because "we need the seat". The RNC and leadership in the congress needs to make it clear that either the members act appropriately or be called on it publicly.

The only way to get rid of cockroaches is to clear the area and fumigate. In my mind, there is little diference between a cockroach and a cocksucker. Oh wait, a cockroach hides from the light, a Congressional cocksucker will rob your blind at high noon with the whole world watching. This “sanctuary for crime” bit is just another extension of the current trends for the Washington elites abusing freedoms that were hard fought by patriots. Here we have a section of the Constitution that was intended to protect congress critters from prosecution for political acts, something that the King and privy council had been doing quite frequently in the old days. Here they want to abuse that protection by claiming immunity for actual crimes being committed.

We also have the “press” who initially had been given “freedom” from federal government interference and then had had their privileges expanded greatly by the courts to include also the States and protection from libel which the founders had never intended. How do they treat that extensive protection??? By going in the tank for the Democrats.

There used to be an old saying about privalidges; “If you abuse them you lose them”. Someone needs to remind these assholes of that.

Will someone kindly explain to me how making the party smaller and representative of a smaller group of Americans leads to electoral victory?

Also, will someone explain to me how purging the GOP of the less-than-100%-perfect-conservatives--in Reagan's name, no less--fits with this quote:

When I began entering into the give and take of legislative bargaining in Sacramento, a lot of the most radical conservatives who had supported me during the election didn't like it.

"Compromise" was a dirty word to them and they wouldn't face the fact that we couldn't get all of what we wanted today. They wanted all or nothing and they wanted it all at once. If you don't get it all, some said, don't take anything.

"I'd learned while negotiating union contracts that you seldom got everything you asked for. And I agreed with FDR, who said in 1933: "I have no expectations of making a hit every time I come to bat. What I seek is the highest possible batting average."

If you got seventy-five or eighty percent of what you were asking for, I say, you take it and fight for the rest later, and that's what I told these radical conservatives who never got used to it.

It is real simple, when you have a conservative running on conservative principles the people come out to vote. For every squishy liberal that the Republicans put out in the news, hundreds of the base stay at home on election day.  Every time a RINO votes with the Dems it makes the party look like just another same-same as the Dems so the base gets the feeling of why bother.

2006 should have been a lesson but the squishies said “oh no it’s the war”. They could ot see the disgust of the base for spending and liberalism.

.75 x .75 = .526.

We don't want to purge RINO voters. They can vote for us all they please.

Purge RINO politicians. Get rid of politicians who's starting position is 50% to 75% of what we want. Then these dips start bargaining with democrats and they're aiming for 25%-50% only. 50/50 (best case) is a wash, and anything less benefits the other side the same way you think 75% benefits us.

Get rid of politicians who's starting position, before negotiation even starts, is allready compromised in advance. And allready not representing a majority of their own damn voting base.

When Lindsay Graham starts cutting deals with Ted Kennedy to get Amnesty through we don't get 75% of what we want. We don't get 50% of what we want. We get zilch, other then screwed.

Too often, compromise for democrats means a compromise between what they want... and the status quo! And then conservatives are painted as irate for not compromising. They'd have to be dumbasses to.

Fortunately, many of us are indeed dumbasses.

Me getting none of what I want, and you settling for only 40% of what you want, is not a compromise! It's a well-negotatied surrender.

You want a dog, your wife wants a cat, so you compromise and get a cat.

Let me repeat: The Democratic Party has become a criminal enterprise.  And they just elected a President who won't do a thing about it.

In fairness, it isn't like the current occupant is doing a whole lot about it either (neither were his allies in Congress-while they had power-didn't want to appear overly partisan).  Oh, and they haven't just become anything-they've been a criminal enterprise for a long time, the same corrupt bunch that was voted out in 1994 took right back over in 2006 because they never left office, it's not like they have other marketable skills.

There are several message boards that I post to where the libs defend the corrupt Donk officeholders to the death, I don't bother even trying to defend the corrupt Pubbies.  My response to them is that I would rather have a party in power that the media at least is interested in holding to account for its wrongdoing, I'm pretty sure most of them don't understand the point.
