Palin: You Betcha, I'm Running For Senate

This is pretty much a "hell's yeah."

I believe that I have — I feel I have a contract with Alaskans to serve. I’ve got two more years in my term. I’m going to serve Alaskans to the best of my ability. At this point it is as governor.

Now if something shifted dramatically and if it were, if it were acknowledged up there that I could be put to better use for my state in the U.S. Senate, I would certainly consider that, but that would take a special election and everything else. I am not one to appoint myself or a member of my family to take the place of any vacancy.

This surprised me -- I thought personal reasons (Bristol's marriage to an Alaskan, Todd's entire career being Alaska-based) would keep her from running.

Maybe she thinks she's has something to prove. And wants payback. That would be a nice attitude.

Via Hot Air, with video of Michelle Malkin slamming McCain for not responding to his staffers' leaks.

At this point, I have to guess it's not an oversight. I wanted to think the best of him, at least in terms of honorable behavior, but it's hard to grant him that benefit of the doubt any longer.

Who was the Diva again?

1 Um, in two years she'll be running for President.

This is a mistake. In another interview, she said she wasn't going to run for the senate.

3 Dear God, no - don't send Palin to the Senate! The Senate is more likely to change her (for the worse), than she is likely to accomplish anything substantive there. Besides, she'd probably end up serving in the Senate with Al Franken, and we shouldn't wish that sort of punishment on anyone.

4 Who was the Diva again?

Peggy Noonan, right?

I hope Palin doesn't do this. Maybe it's because I'm partial to Governors running for President but I think this hurts her 'brand'. Better to be the one (not capitalized) making decisions than 1 of 100 and in the minority to boot.

If she does do it and wins, at least it's a big fuck you to the Washington types. That'll be nice.

5 I would think she could get plenty of payback in the governorship by filing some targeted lawsuits against the feds.

Posted by: someone2 at November 12, 2008 05:22 PM (jndJg)

6 I dunno, in the other interviews she's done this week she's hedged quite a bit more. Maybe she's just being coy on purpose while she figures out her next move.

Anyway, I'd rather see her stay as AK GOV. She's being naive if she doesn't think that the moment she walks on to the Senate floor, senators from both sides (and particularly fellow R's) will be looking for opportunities to embarrass her and generally assert their crusty dominance. McCain will probably lead the hazing.

7 The 2012 election starts now - at least the fund raising part has to start soon. Dems are going to start the moment Obama takes office in Jan and if the GOP does not get it together, we are going to have a repeat of 2008 in 2012.

23 The Senate is a black-hole that should be avoided.

Stay a Governor, work on energy policy. Tour the country making speeches, attend conservative think-tanks on energy and defense topics. Revisit Iraq in a year or so, stop in Georgia. Occasionally do the cable talk-show circuit. Wait a few years and profit.

The 1912 election: Teddy Roosevelt runs on the Bull Moose ticket, splits the Republican vote with Taft, and Wilson becomes President.

28 Dear God, no - don't send Palin to the Senate! The Senate is more likely to change her (for the worse)

A virtually unknown governor of an obscure state being picked by McCain for the VP slot was like being struck by a flash of lightning.  The only way she can continue in the limelight and maintain political relevance and viability is to get out of the hinterlands of Alaska and into Washington D.C., which is why she has to run for the senate.

As to whether she'll be "changed...for the worse," does anyone  know if she's actually formulated (or even given thought to) a coherent philosophy of government, economics, liberty, Constitutional issues, political ideology, or is she a book of largely blank pages waiting to be filled?

For the last fucking time, they do not do appointments in Alaska.  Furthermore, Stevens has to win the election first.  There is still about 30% of the vote to count.  There is a good chance that Begich will win the election, rendering this whole discussion moot.

And the whole Washington outsider thing is total bullshit; this election proved that.

37 If it's true, it's a mistake.

There's a big difference between governors and senators.

Governors have to do stuff, like govern.

Senators just have to be able to speak at great length while saying the words "my esteemed colleagues" in reference to Ted Kennedy and Chuck Schumer.

"The only way she can continue in the limelight and maintain political relevance and viability is to get out of the hinterlands of Alaska and into Washington D.C."

Agreed, just as I said the other day when this idea was first floated.  Sure, the spotlight is following her a week after the election when the controversy surrounding the backbiting in the campaign is a hot topic.  That's all they are talking about in her interviews, not her positions on issues.  Give it a couple weeks and events in DC including a potentially bitter lame duck session, the ever cratering economy, a couple wars that are still going on.... she will be a footnote.

When Palin was first announced I was against it.  Not because of anything specifically about her but because I didn't know a damn thing about her.  Nobody did, including it seems, McCain.  I predicted that the msm would feast on her and the short time between her announcement and the election would not give her the time to rebound.  How did that work out?

If she hopes to have a shred of national presence going forward she needs to be in DC.  She needs to be on a national stage leading the fight for the right causes and have the country see what kinda chops she's really got.  If she returns to Alaska, she will return to obscurity.

Um actually, they don't.  There was a referendum in which the state voted to get rid of gubernatorial senate appointments because of the outrage over Murkowski's nepotism.

42 uh yeah actually they do have appointments there.  Murkowski appointed his daughter to his senate seat.  But again she has said numerous times she wont run for senate.  If anything if she has to she would appoint Sean Parnell to that seat.

The law was reformed twice after Murkowski pulled his nepotism act, which is where the confusion comes in. If Stevens resigns or is expelled, there has to be a special election in 60(?) days. Due to conflicts between the law passed by the legislature and a later popular initiative, from what I've read it's unclear if the Governor can appoint a temporary replacement to fill the seat until the election is held.

Here is what Sarah Palin should do:

She should go back to Alaska, get the support of the Alaska State Legislature and announce that ANWR will now be controlled exclusively by the State of Alaska.   All Federal personnel working in ANWR may either resign their positions and/or take comparable positions with the Sate of Alaska.  Bidding for drilling rights starts immediately with revenue to be shared with the State of Alaska.

The legalities here are hazy enough that the courts would take years to sort it out. In the mean time would Obama call in air strikes on Alaska to stop the drilling or would he just stutter and stammer and negotiate?  If Obama threatened force would Alaskans lock and load? Who's side would General Petreus be on?  Would Putin's lackies go to the UN in support of a 'Free Alaska?'  Would NRA types from the other 49 (or is it 57 states) flock to Alaska?  Would Hugo Chavez use the distraction to invade Columbia, Ecuador, Cuba and Panama?

You have to admit it could be entertaining.

44 I can't believe that she'd do something so counter to her long-term political interests. However, hinting about it through non-denial denials, is a pretty good way to keep herself in the news. She's doing interviews on her terms now, not on the McCain staff's terms. Seizing the initiative is never a bad idea, especially when you have good instincts and aren't being tripped up by a traitorous staff.

Plus, since it's happening so soon after the election, her treatment by the press is still fresh in everyone's mind. Nice way to effectively contrast between the McCain staff-spayed version of Sarah, and the Barracuda that we know and love.

She has to get FP cred somehow

45 What's she going to do as Senator?  She's already run a national campaign against earmarks.  There's no fucking way an Obama administration will even think about drilling in ANWR.  What else does a Senator from Alaska do?  Can she do the Barack Obama model and basically do nothing for 143 days and then run for President?  Somehow I don't see the media letting her get away with that.  Call me crazy.

47 From what I read, if Stevens were to resign now there has to be a special election to fill out the remaining term (from now until the end of 200.

If Stevens resigns after he is sworn in as a Senator starting in 2009 Palin might be able to appoint herself because the length of the remaining term is so long (nearly six years).  Don't know Alaska law.

Now I've also heard that Harry Reid is looking to oust Stevens from the Senate because of his recent conviction (Its allowed under the Constitution [Art I, Sec. 5]).  If Harry does it before the end of 2008, he may have to do it again in 2009 when the new Congress convenes.

I don't know if Palin can appoint herself.  As an example in California the Governor cannot appoint himself.  The Governor has to resign and hope the Lt. Governor, when made Governor, appoints the former Governor.

Commenting in Calgary, I'm...

48 voodoo,

Alaska cannot take over ANWR.  As part of becoming a state, Alaska had to give all public lands to the Federal Government.  All new states, with the exception of Texas, was required to give up state public lands.

Nothing to say that GWB could turn over the lands to Alaska if he has the executive power.  I mean, Billy Jeff turned portions of Arizona and Utah that were Federal public lands into a reserve.

I'll repost this because I think figuring out a way to make this scenario work will lead us to fixing the conservative movement and the Republican party.  If anyone else wants to answer, the more specifics (vote % totals, who splits where, why) the better.

Hypothetical situational scenario:

2011 Palin, disgusted with the continual spew of venom from established elites in her own "party" decides she'll run for POTUS as a conservative independent.  What does the resulting election of 2012 look like and why?

It would look like a slightly more successful than Ross Perot, I suppose, and it would be more successful because Palin is more charismatic than Perot. But if she ran 3rd party, the easiest thing for the media to do would be to paint her as a fundamentalist nutter (which they're already trying their damndest to do). Starting your own party for ideological purity when the media is chanting "Christianist Nutterball" isn't going to be successful.

I believe if Palin ran as an independent the election would break down something like this:

The One--57%

Palin--33%

Repub--10%

I think Palin takes the pro-life conservative vote, Repub. X takes the elite, moderate R's, and The One takes his 2008 portion plus a few peel-offs from the republican fracus.

Here's the crux and my point...The most popular R can't run on his/her own and beat the demos.   And to a greater extent, the moderates can't win without the conservatives.  I believe most people who vote against Palin (or any true conservative) do so on the grounds of 1 issue more than any other...yep, abortion.  Like it or not, I believe abortion is still the defining political question of our time.

I'm not at all in favor or nominating a pro-abortion R for POTUS, but the R's don't get elected consistently until we figure out how to handle the abortion issue in a way that doesn't push the middle to the left...we have to pull them to the right.

Suggestions?

#58 C'mon, does she really have enough experiance to be a senator?

Compared to say....ummm....Nancy Pelosi?  UH.....Yes! Now, let's get real here -- Pelosi is a dimwit. Yes, a dimwit.  And she made it to Speaker of the House. So yes, Sarah can go to Washington and become a Senator and groom herself for bigger things, if she so chooses.

But I would strongly recommend that Sarah hire a media consultant to work with her on her public speaking. JOhn McCain should have done the same... he had some substance but his style sucked big time. He might have been able to win a debate if his speaking skills had been better, but no..... (NOTE: Barack Obama worked with a speech consultant, Mike Sheehan.)

Sarah could always revert to her folksy charm when she wanted to use it, but she would also be ready for any other type of debate or speaking engagement, that required major league skills.

That said, I kinda like Bobby Jindal for 2012.... but Sarah is good, too.

She should stay as far away from the Senate as she can...

1)  She will be more effective as a Governor, because she will be 1 with the power to actually make decisions, as opposed to being 1 of a 100 that does nothing

2)  Governors get elected President far more often that Senators because people can see what they've actually DONE while being in charge

3)  She would totally ruin her brand of "Washington Outsider"
