Veterans Day 2008

Thank you all.

marines.JPG

As is tradition, Project Valour IT kicks off it's annual fund drive today. See CDR Slamander's for more information on this great cause.

Here are a couple of interesting links having to do with WWI and the origins of Veterans Day.

An audio recording of a WWI gas artillery attack. They recorded so people would remember what war sounded like after the "war to end all wars" was over.

One of the last living British vets of WWI attributes his longevity to "whisky, and wild, wild women".

The history of Veterans Day in the US.

1 I took a moment in my classes today to explain why we celebrate Veteran's Day on this particular day. Went through the 11th hour, 11th day, 11th month, routine, list of casualties from WWI, etc. At 11 o'clock, I stopped in the middle of that and said "and the war ended 90 years ago...right now." Dead silence. Let it linger. Then said "And that's what they heard. And it was awesome."

Veteran's Day is for all uniformed, but I always like to salute the Doughboys special.

2 Let me voice my thanks and gratitude to my fellow Americans who served, especially those who didn't make it home.  Thank you for your service and your sacrifice, and helping keep America free.

I was proud to have served, and during my time in uniform, I met some incredible Americans.  We need those people now just as much as we ever did.

Be sure to hug or thank a veteran today, everybody.

4 Thank you, Drew, for posting a separate thread for our Vets!

Every day is Veteran's Day. Any time I see a Vet or someone in uniform, I thank them for their service. God bless our military, the best of the best!

7 I would just like to send my sincerest thanks and gratitude to the brave men and women of our armed services this Veterans Day.

I am so truly humble, and inspired, by the sacrifices that each and every one of them has made for our country. They are indeed the true heros as well as the sole protectors of this beautiful country of ours'. And for that, I for one will never be able to thank them enough.

Thank you and God bless.

"A veteran - whether active duty, retired, National Guard or Reserve - is someone who at one point in his/her life wrote a blank check made payable to the United States of America for an amount of 'up to and including my life.'

To all my fellow veterans: Have a good Veteran’s Day. We all should take time to remember the fallen and continue to support those still serving.

10 Words fail to convey the gratitude all vets deserve, but thank you to every one of you.

A special note of thanks to my grandfather, USAAF/USAF 1940-1952, for shooting down as many Nazis in Europe and Communists in Korea as possible.  This is my first Veterans' Day without him, but now he can be with his buddies again that he missed so much.

14 *sniff* what a great picture, says it all. My dad is a vietnam vet, my grandfather a WWII vet (25 missions over Germany). For all those who protect and serve our Nation, thank you for all that you do. There's not a greater gift than liberty and freedom, countless millions have discovered that thanks to our boys and gals.

15 I agree with 14: no greater gift than liberty and freedom. From the bottom of my heart I want to thank all our veterans. I respect and honor you so much, and will never, ever forget your sacrifices, from small all the way to the ultimate, so that we may be free.

God bless you.

Since moving down here, I really do miss the Remembrance Day commemorations.  We always joked that everybody loves a parade except for the poor sods who have to march in it - well, nobody would miss that parade for anything, despite the fact that cold temperatures are a given and sleet in not uncommon.  Of course, the chance to visit with the older Vets afterwards and have a few pints is also a draw.

Also, since we criticize google a lot for being liberal - their logo is wearing the hats of the four armed services.

29 Thanks, Drew, for this thread. USMC, Active, 1998-2003; reserve to 2007; going back to the reserves now. Grandfathers were both in the Army Air Force in WWII...my great grandfather was a Cossack in the Czar's army before that! Uncles were in the Corps, grandma was Rosie the Riveter in Detroit.

But that picture reminds me of an essay by Theodore Dalrymple on a certain Central European author who escaped the communists by way of Spain and thence to England; he was a communist himself before he opened his eyes. He described the Stalinist show trials where undesirables were sentenced and then charged, and at their end, the party chief came to the condemned and said, "Comrade, the Party requires another service from you." And these men who had spent their entire life faithful to their dream of a greater socialist society agreed to plead guilty to the Party's charges because they believed that maybe their deaths were essential to the path to greater justice. But when the executioners came for them - in the dark, in a long barracks for prisoners - they sobbed and called out for help.

There is much more to life than any politics can explain away, more than can be deduced or known by men. Sometimes I am ashamed that I am still alive, when better men than me have given more - I know their families, but I am a bachelor, wouldn't I have been a better trade? - but just that image captures in my heart all the pain, all the joy, all the hardship and courage of this life. I am so mystified by it all. When I die and reach the gates, even if they turn me back, it'll be my pleasure to see these better men again.

The American veteran is different than other veterans through history.  The American veteran is the only veteran that has served in order to protect freedom and to give that freedom to others.  They are not conquerors or occupiers or empire builders.  They are the defenders of the weak and the protectors of liberty.  They have sacrificed much and asked for little except that their mission not be in vain.

God bless them all.

36 My thanks to all veterans who have served this country well.

I'd also like to take a moment to honor George Cameron of the US Navy. (I wish I knew his rank so I could list it here.) He served at Pearl Harbor in 1941. And yes, he was there that day. Mr. Cameron died a couple of years ago, but I'm glad I had the honor of meeting him.

God bless

37 Thank you to all US Veterans today, and everyday, for the small sacrifices of everyday life in the services, but especially today for the final sacrifices that have protected this nation since before its founding.

Including my late father who served twenty-four years in the 'active duty' AF despite his commission's lowly status-- Capt., USAF Res, 54 TCS, 15 TCS, 29 MAS, 16 SOS, 348 TAS, 30 MAS, 1776 ABW., and my grandfathers who served in WW2, PO1 Joseph R. USN, US Naval Station Pearl Harbor, and Col Joel G. USA, Mil. Dist. of Washington.

One thing has always bothered me.  Why do the honorees of a holiday have to work it?

I'm a veteran, and not complaining about not having a day off for myself.  I'm suggesting we should be sincere about our appreciation.  If it's a real holiday, let's treat it like one.

There isn't even the incentive of the draft anymore.  Every recent service man and woman stepped up of their own free will to protect us, knowing we were at war.  I'm humbled.

So from this vet, I give a heartfelt THANKS to all of today's vets.

43 Posted by: irongrampa at November 11, 2008 03:17 PM (ud5dN)

I love the continuum...

Those of us who have never worn the uniform have (or should have) such respect and gratitude for those who have. Those who have feel it for those who are serving today. Those who are serving but not on the front lines have it for those who are. Those who serve in combat have it for those who are wounded and those who are wounded have it for those who 'gave the last full measure of devotion'.

It's amazing but everyone, not matter how much they are esteemed, always has someone to look up to.

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

A long time ago I learned the meaning of Veterans Day (from my Grandfather who served in WW1 & WW2 and my Dad who served in WW2),  besides the fact it is was my birthday. As a kid though I always liked getting my birthday off from school and didn't give much thought to those who served. In 1971 I spent my  21st birthday in Quang Tri, Vietnam with the 3/5 Cav. Since then this day has a new meaning for me................

...........................plus I'm another year older.

To my Brothers & Sisters, Thank You and Welcome Home.

Thanks to all of you for having given me the country and freedom I enjoyed all of my life, and my children have enjoyed.

If that freedom is to be but a passing dream, it was still worth it - to have had it and held it for a little while.

52 Bless 'em all .
I'd especially like to honor my father. Enlisted in the S.C. national guard at the age of 14. Yeah, he lied about his age. Held enlisted rank up to E-6 then attended OCS and became a second lieutenant . Got out, attended college, met my mom, and had 5 kids  while a company commander in the Ca. national guard . Then back on active duty in time for the Tet Offensive . Even though he lost many close friends in  Viet Nam he continued to love the Army and was one of those core officers that helped to rebuild the service after that debacle and the abysmal Carter yrs.

I raise my first glass to Dad and his fellow warriors that have gone on to fiddlers green .
My second glass to those still here and to those that serve today .
Bless 'em all.

54 I work with a guy who casually told me a story about a bag of hand grenades that went off near him and why he'll never be startled by a loud noise again...

...turned out he'd been a marine in Viet Nam, and was in the battle of Khe Sahn.

There are people in this country who live off my tax dollars while this guy busts his ass for a living, and he'd refuse any kind of government handout.

My pride in this country begins and ends with anyone who wore its military uniforms.

To any veteran who might be reading this: my deepest and most grateful thanks. My true appreciation cannot be adequately expressed.
