| Socialist Leader to Open Cuban Prison, Ship Hundreds of Prisoners to USA - [Cuffy Meigs]I have been told to prepare for a repeat of the Carter years, but this isn't exactly what I had in mind. We're screwed: President-elect Obama's advisers are quietly crafting a proposal to ship dozens, if not hundreds, of imprisoned terrorism suspects to the United States to face criminal trials, a plan that would make good on his promise to close the Guantanamo Bay prison but could require creation of a controversial new system of justice. But that's not good enough for Democrats: The tougher challenge will be allaying fears by Democrats who believe the Bush administration's military commissions were a farce and dislike the idea of giving detainees anything less than the full constitutional rights normally enjoyed by everyone on U.S. soil.Aw, to hell with it --- just let 'em go: Some detainees likely would be returned to the countries where they were first captured for further detention or rehabilitation. So, just what do they plan to do with Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, the architect of the 9/11 attack? Give him a pat on the head and a ticket home?

Yep, can't send them back to their home countries if they might be tortured there. I say we drop them off at HRW's front door. Upside to all this, is a return to an emphasis on rendition and a press that doesn't want to embarrass the new administration by reporting it.

NPR feature this morning: Obama facing the daunting task of rebuilding the credibility of the Justice Department. NPR is the one facing the daunting task of laying down the right "context" for reporting how after Clinton fired 92 out of 93 US attorneys on day 1 without them saying a peep about it, and Bush fired 8 that they reported as the end of civilization, it will be a big ho-hum when Obama goes back to the Clinton playbook and cleans house. But hey, these guys at NPR are professional propagandists, and they know how to do these things. But they must know it is going to be tough, since they are firing up the message machine less than a week after the election. Let the good times roll. Look, people, can't we compromise? We know this sort of behavior is in their nature, but who are we to question their nature, or expect them to curtail what they find natural and pleasurable just to accommodate our own outdated, conservative desires to "live" and "exist" and suchlike? Shouldn't WE make a few exceptions, too?
I mean for example, they want to blow up buildings in New York and kill themselves in the process. And sure, to us, it's a monstrous act of barbarism but to them, It's a totally natural part of the great circle of life, y'know? And if you think about it, couldn't you come up with one or two buildings in New York we don't really need so much? I bet you can if you try. Gitmo is a stain on our reputation - Obama is expected to fix it, he's loved worldwide. Problem is, Gitmo is only a stain because they made it so.
JesuCristo! Full constitutional rights to non-uniformed enemy fighters! We didn't give that to UNIFORMED troops in war. But we're nicer, we do it better. Fuck, we ALREADY do it better than the Geneva Convention requires - but that's not good enough you see. We have so taken for granted our constitutional rights, and have become so ignorant about them, we believe everyone else in the world is entitled to them as well. That'd be nice if we actually ruled the world, but we don't. And they don't follow our rules - live beheadings on the internet, anyone? This whole contretemps is but merely a club by which our disloyal opposition uses to beat the Bush administration. They point to it as futher proof that "he's not my president" and "this is not my America." And they don't understand the ramifications of this "principled" stand. You want brutal? If the enemy gets afforded the full protection of our law merely because he was captured on the battlefield by us, then we will no longer take prisoners. If it is her, I'll be ready for civil disobedience bigtime. And yeah, # 93 was Fitz... what someone aptly called "a long-range torpedo in the water". Maybe Admiral McComity or Ensign Bush could let off a few for our side, or would that be considered a partisan faux pas? We're gonna have to build a database of Obama firings and appointments that can be contrasted to Bush's. One of the dumbest things Bush II did was think that he would have the loyalty of any Dem he left in office when he took over. All he did was seed his administration will time-bombs. Obama won't make that mistake - any token Republican appointees will be thoroughly defused RINOs just looking to stay on the White House guest list. You see the point about covert CIA agents having to show up and testify and be cross-examined is a feature, not a bug to these clowns. Of course the agents won't testify. And then, since the poor terrorists civil rights have been violated by not being able to face their accusers, they shall be acquitted. Plus we get the sideshow of all the legal battles to force covert agents to blow their cover and testify. You know, kinda like how we forced a certain Jane Bond and her idiot husband to come out...

Let 'em go in any major blue city is fine with me. I especially would like to see them in New York City, home of NY Times, ABC, NBC, and CBS. Publish what cities they are released in so the maximum fear and despair will take hold.
Today you don't even need to get into the secured areas of the airports to cause total havoc. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people are often lined up for check in and security in one convenient condensed location. The enemy would not even have to make a suicide attack. A thirty second fuse and run like hell. A nice wheeled suitcase should easily carry 100 lbs of HE and nails. Don't like me giving them ideas? Well, you prepare for what the enemy can do, not what you think he will do. Now you have one more idea of what they can do. Five guys, five airports and no airplanes fly for a week and another industry is bankrupt and hundreds or a thousand are dead. Currently, the only security from this type of attack is the difficulty of coming up with a half ton of explosives. Posted by: snookered at November 10, 2008 01:15 PM (bgJJk) 88
A lot of us have been saying for many months that Bush should ship them all out except for a few of the really bad ones. He should have already executed the bad ones and got rid of the others. Even if McLame had won he was also opposed to Gitmo and he would have closed it as well.
Now we will have civilian trials, classified info will be given to terrorist attorneys and then disseminated to the terrorists overseas. In the end most of them will walk and be turned lose in the U.S. to kill more people.
I actually blame Bush and that asshole Kennedy for this. Posted by: Vic at November 10, 2008 01:19 PM (Qd7GC) 89
The next wave of terrorism to hit the US shoud be named after Obama. It will only be fitting. Honestly, could anything be more stupidly suicidal than this? Posted by: BattleofthePyramids at November 10, 2008 01:37 PM (Ifn+G) 90
They are FUCKING INSANE! [sorry 'bout that, I feel better now] Granting American civil rights to foreign scumbags caught on the battlefield in a foreign land. Somebody please show me some Constitutional law or decision that even hints at such a travesty. As a military veteran, I feel as if I got too wasted one night and fell Through The Looking Glass into Bizarro-world. This (future) is not what I signed up to defend. Turning America into France is NOT upholding and defending the Constitution. But then.... that's pretty bloody obvious to any rational adult. I rest my case: they're fucking insane. Agreed. FUCKING INSANE!

What about the married gay ones? Are they being allowed in, too?
And what happens when, not if, but WHEN, these dirtbags start demanding asylum in the US? Posted by: richard mcenroe at November 10, 2008 03:16 PM (jCJ5W) 93
it's the end of the world as we know it...

Move them from Gitmo to San Francisco. It would be pure toture for all involved.

Save some for Boston, New York and Philly, too.

But, underscoring the difficult decisions Obama must make to fulfill
his pledge of shutting down Guantanamo, the plan could require the
creation of a new legal system to handle the classified information
inherent in some of the most sensitive cases.
A new legal system, Barry? Getting ready for show trials for your political opponents? "I think that creating a new alternative court system in response to the abject failure of Guantanamo would be a profound mistake," Jonathan Hafetz, an American Civil Communist Liberties Union attorney who represents detainees, said Monday. "We do not need a new court system. The last eight years are a testament to the problems of trying to create new systems." Barry vs. the ACLU. That would be funny.
